When the Bundesliga schedule was first confirmed and it became clear Schalke 04 would host Bayern Munich on jut the second Bundesliga matchday, the expectation was that Die Königsblauen would be swept aside rather convincingly. After all, the team's last meeting, three years ago, ended 6-0 to Bayern. That was under Thomas Tuchel's inconsistent Bayern. What could Kompany & Co do?
Stutter to a 0-0 draw, that is what. A dour Bayern team struggled to get out of second gear and really punish a defensively solid Schalke, who celebrate their first point since their return to the Bundesliga. Here are some observations on the match:
It is easy to forget after the match, but the first 15 minutes completely belonged to Bayern. The Bavarians' counterpress utterly suffocated the hosts, who simply could not exit their own half in those minutes. The team pinged the ball around, kept it well and utterly annihilated any counter attacks.
But, in what would become an unfortunate running theme throughout the match, the passing was far too slow and the players seemed unsure of their positions. One of Bayern's most important strengths is their ability to move the ball quickly from side to side. Players know their positions, know how to move the ball on and ping it back and forth. This forces the opposition defense to move side to side, which opens up **** e in the middle and opportunities to score.
This was missing today. It was clear that the chemistry among forwards Nathaniel Brown, Ismael Saibari and Lennart Karl was missing, but regulars such as Konrad Laimer, Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano also struggled to really get into the flow of things. It was possible to overcome these issues (Nathaniel Brown, after all, would still have given Bayern the lead if it had not been for a phenomenal save by Loris Karius in the Schalke goal) and perhaps the players would have grown into the match more.

Texas A&M will kick off the 2026 regular season against Missouri State on Saturday night, which will include five of the Aggies' five-star commits in the No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class, led by senior St. Thomas Aquinas offensive tackle Mark Matthews, who is coming off Friday night's thrilling 31-24 victory to stay undefeated this year.
One of the more refined pass-protecting tackles in the 2027 cycle, Matthews is widely considered to have first-round NFL Draft potential, and after committing to Texas A&M over Miami, Aggie fans are waiting for the blue-chip big man to officially shut down his recruitment and sign with the program in early December.
Late last month, Matthews revealed in an interview with GigEm247's Cade Draughon that he plans to announce his recruitment shutdown in due time and will release a statement on X, but for the remaining fans still unsure if the Florida native is truly locked in with the Aggies, his post-game interview with Marcus Benjamin stated that he is "a thousand percent locked in" with Texas A&M.
When asked what Texas A&M fans should expect from Matthews in Year 1, the incoming freshman simply responded, "The film, I promise I'm going to drop myself in the SEC and do the same thing." When asked which teams are still in pursuit, he mentioned only the Miami Hurricanes and coach Mario Cristobal, which isn't surprising given the in-state connection.
Matthews is expected to make his way to College Station this weekend and attend Texas A&M vs. Missouri State on Saturday night.

Esmee Gummer dreamed of becoming a professional dancer. At 18, and just six weeks before she was due to start dance college, complications following surgery left her paralysed from the waist down and unsure if she would ever walk again.
Now 35, she has swapped life at her home in Hackney, east London, for a campervan as she attempts to run 5,000km (3,107 miles) around the UK and Ireland.
She is leading a free 5km (3.1 mile) run club in every British city, as well as Dublin, as part of her project – The Nation's 5k – to inspire people to "say yes to movement before it's too late".
Since setting off from Inverness in June, she has consumed countless carbohydrate gels and worn out at least five pairs of trainers.
A support crew drives the van between cities, but Gummer, originally from Heybridge, Essex, is making the journey on foot, running for up to seven hours a day as she aims to complete the challenge in 99 days.

The Big Ten and SEC have passed rules saying players who have been under contract with NFL teams are not eligible to play in either conference. But the Big 12 has no such rule, and Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire says he'll look into adding a player who was in an NFL training camp but didn't make the final roster.
"We've been monitoring, for the last week or so, how we can add, if possible, somebody to make this team better," McGuire said. "We haven't called any NFL coaches. We haven't scouted any NFL players, that I think some teams have done, but we're definitely gonna look."
Two players who were cut by NFL teams this month, tight end Dae'Quan Wright and defensive tackle Zxavian Harris, had agreed to play for LSU this season, reuniting them with coach Lane Kiffin, who coached them both at Ole Miss last year. The new SEC rule would seem to preclude them from going to LSU, but wouldn't preclude Texas Tech from adding them — unless the Big 12 adopts the same rule. McGuire said he's unsure whether the Big 12 will do that.
"You know what's coming next: Those players are gonna sue the conference. So what do you do? I was checking with our guys today, what's the Big 12 gonna do? It's going to be interesting," McGuire said.
NCAA teams are allowed to have up to 105 players on their rosters. McGuire said he currently has one roster spot available and won't kick anyone off the team to make room for a new player, so Texas Tech would only add one former NFL player to the team.

McAnally-Hilgeman Racing's Tyler Ankrum didn't have the race he desired, but he still got his desired outcome.
Layne Riggs won the race, scoring his series leading sixth victory on the season. Riggs didn't win either of the stages, as those stage wins went to Spire Motorsports' Connor Zilisch. In addition to winning stages one and two, the Cup Series regular led 55 laps as well. While these two driver had impressive runs, most eyes were following the intense points battle between Tyler Ankrum, Stewart Friesen, and Jake Garcia.
Coming into the race, Ankrum held a 20 point lead over both Friesen and Garcia, however that lead dissipated from the drop of the green flag. Very quickly in stage one, Ankrum battled brake issues and ran outside the top 20 for most of the day. While he struggled, both Garcia and Friesen chipped away at his points gap, as they gained track position throughout the race through strategy.
As the laps were winding down, the battle between the three drivers was within a singular point. It seemed like each lap, everyone was unsure on who was going to win. Then with 6 laps to go, everything changed. Tricon Racing's Gavan Boschele lost control of his truck entering turn one. From there, chaos ensued.
Before the first overtime attempt, things were looking bleak. Ankrum was running in 27th, but crew chief Mark Hillman elected to stay out on the race track, while many cars came down pit road. This move put Ankrum inside the top 20, and gained him ten points over the other two competitors.

On August 5, 2026, AppLovin Corporation (NASDAQ:APP) announced its second-quarter results, highlighting revenue that grew by 53% to $1.92 billion. The adjusted EBITDA rose 58% to $1.61 billion at an 84% margin, while the net income reached $1.27 billion. AppLovin also confirmed that the SEC had ended its inquiry, which was initiated in October 2025, with no action. But the stock fell anyway. APP is now down about 53% year-to-date and approximately 31% in the past month. Bank of America, on August 11, cut its rating on the stock from Buy to Neutral. Beyond the federal probe clearance and the 53% growth in revenue, something has happened; something that upsets the market.
Though the revenue was positive, it came in below consensus by under 1%. This is the first guidance-midpoint miss since AppLovin's 2021 IPO – a rounding error erased almost $40 billion in market value after CEO Adam Foroughi explained it. He noted that model improvements were lighter than normal during the quarter, with the next step-up landing right after it ended. The stock's downgrade to a Neutral rating at BofA, a week past the quarterly results, came with a related angle. The firm began by noting that the risks surrounding the company's 30% year-over-year long-term revenue growth forecast have increased. BofA's ***** yst further argued that engineer-led tuning of gaming models now appears to be the main driver of quarterly growth and remains unsure whether the company can continue producing another 3–5% improvement every quarter purely by self-learning. Foroughi's explanation raises questions about how consistently AppLovin can deliver sequential growth when some gains depend on the timing of engineer-led model upgrades. It shows how heavily a quarter relies on when a discrete upgrade lands — the sensitivity of the tiny less-than-1% miss. Repricing is based on the durability of the growth, rather than on the quarter's performance.
AppLovin has grown 53% at an 84% margin and bought back $551 million of stock in the quarter. The company has also guided third-quarter revenue to $2.06–$2.09 billion and is pushing AXON into e-commerce. After the collapse it trades near 22 to 26 times forward earnings. Compared to its former multiple, this is only a fraction. Short interest remains moderately low at 4.13%. The number of hedge funds holding the stock has declined from 108 in Q4 2025 to 91 in Q1 2026, according to the Insider Monkey database. Despite the fall, the number indicates a significant institutional interest in the stock.

PITTSBURGH — Red Sox' designated hitter Masataka Yoshida suffered a strained left hamstring Saturday night and was forced to leave the team's game with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
After the game, a 4-0 shutout win over the Pirates, Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said the team was unsure of the severity of the injury, but added: "I think he's going to be down for some time."
Yoshida said he felt some pain as he approached second base. He said he had experienced a hamstring strain while playing in ****** an and required him to miss "about a month."

LOS ANGELES -- Different arena but the results weren't different from the last game.
It was another back-and-forth affair. The Sparks (12-20) took on the Mercury (13-22) at Galen Center in the University of Southern California. But it got away from them again as a late 8-0 run by Phoenix pretty much put the game away. The Sparks tried some late three-point shooting to catch up but it wasn't enough as the Mercury beat them in Los Angeles for the second straight game, 94-87.
It was not a great last few minutes for the Sparks. They turned the ball over seven times in the last five minutes of the game.

"I think it was the last four minutes when they went to the zone and we just kind of stopped moving it," Sparks coach Lynne Roberts said. "We got a little unsure. Zone offense is not rocket science. And so they went to the zone because I think inside we had the advantage. And our shooting wasn't great but our quality of threes weren't great either down the last four or five minutes."

Due to a recent federal court ruling, several players in the class of 2022, whose college football careers appeared over, have been granted another year of eligibility. That includes former Washington Huskies defensive lineman Ta'ita'i Uiagalelei, who appeared wearing a new number as the team went through its third practice of training camp on Sunday.
Uiagalelei, a 6-foot-4, 285-pound fifth-year senior, went through drills with the rest of the defensive tackles wearing No. 46, a switch from No. 11 that he wore in 2025, which has since been claimed by first-year edge Ramzak Fruean.
"I'm unsure about what I'm allowed to say on that or not because of rules of recruiting or not recruiting," coach Jedd Fisch said last Tuesday when asked about the potential of former players returning who had another fifth season of eligibility left.
"But if there was a player or two that only had four years and we were capable of bringing them back, I would not be opposed to bringing them back if it fit our culture."
A former three-star recruit out of Mater Dei High School in California in the 2022 recruiting class, Uiagalelei made six starts and 21 appearances for Fisch at Arizona. He reunited with his former coach last season after he elected to remained in Tuscon for the 2024 campaign, when Fisch and most of the Wildcats' staff moved north.

The Los Angeles Rams have stolen headlines for various reasons this offsason, most recently for the possibility tht they get Aaron Donald back from a two-year retirement.
Donald has been teasing a possible decision, but recently admitted that he was unsure. Rams head coach Sean McVay has been forward about his desire to have Donald back with the team, but also that he would not pressure his former defensive star.

TALLAHASSEE, Florida — Florida university leaders are asking Congress to take a timeout and call some audibles in the college sports legislation that could pass the Senate as soon as this week.
Athletic directors and other top officials in the college-sports-crazed Sunshine State see the proposal, the country's most substantial attempt yet to govern this chaotic athletics marketplace, as "progress over perfection" — a potential shift they welcome yet hope will evolve in the Senate or eventually the House.
Notably, they are apprehensive about how the legislation could put schools in purgatory if they want to switch athletic conferences, and they're unsure about the idea of capping the number of colleges in those conferences. They also want more guardrails around third-party name, image and likeness deals they contend schools are using to funnel money to student athletes.
With senators positioned to possibly vote soon on the so-called Protect College Sports Act, the state university system's Board of Governors is sensing it's time to kick off on lobbying the Florida delegation. And there appears to be an open channel, as some Florida athletic directors spoke Monday night with Florida Sens. Ashley Moody and Rick Scott about the bill. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) released a new version of their legislation Tuesday after weeks of negotiations with the largest athletics conferences and the Trump administration, as Cruz remains adamant about passing the bipartisan measure before senators leave for August recess at the end of this week.
"Getting something done in Congress is difficult; changing it later is going to be really difficult," Keith Perry, a former GOP state lawmaker serving on the Board of Governors, said Tuesday during an athletics task force meeting. "The only opportunity, really, to have any kind of influence is there now."

With a player meeting expected to unveil more information to LIV Golf members who are uncertain what lies ahead, Cameron Smith said he's preparing for the season-ending LIV Golf Team Championship as if it's still happening, even though fellow league member Martin Kaymer was quoted as saying he thought there was a 5 percent chance the event would go in Michigan as planned.
"We've been told to prepare as though it's going ahead. So we're expecting it to happen," Smith said during a press conference on Tuesday. "I'm really unsure, but we had a great year there last year in Detroit, and we're hoping we get back there. It's a great golf course, a great venue, and the crowds really turned up as well. Yeah, would be disappointed if it wasn't."
The circuit's turbulent 2026 season appeared poised to take another significant hit last week, when reports leaked that the league was expected to announce the cancellation of its team championship at The Cardinal in Plymouth, marking the second event scrubbed from this year's schedule.

Republican Sen. John Kennedy (La.) said Sunday he is unsure whether President Trump truly believes his claims that vandals damaged the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
"I don't know whether he really believes that, or it's part of his political messaging, or he's just thinking out loud," Kennedy told host Kristen Welker on NBC News's "Meet the Press."
"You and I both know the president well," the Louisiana Republican added. "He exists loudly, and he grows anxious when he has an unexpressed thought. I'm not saying he doesn't really believe it, I just don't know."

In a 20-page filing, the Justice Department pinned the damage to the site on a "rushed and botched installation" Atlantic Industrial Coatings carried out this spring and summer to repaint the bottom of the pool. The department also faulted the Interior Department for a "barebones" report about the incident involving Hearn.

Tottenham manager Roberto de Zerbi is unsure whether Richarlison will stay at the club, saying the Brazilian forward "sometimes" wants to leave.
The 29-year-old Richarlison reinforced his importance with a last-minute winner as 10-man Spurs beat Chelsea 2-1 on their pre-season tour in Sydney on Saturday.
He also scored in their 2-0 win over Auckland FC last weekend.
Richarlison's fate has come into focus after Tottenham's aggressive summer of spending to boost their fortunes after avoiding the drop by coming 17th in the Premier League last season.
Tottenham have yet to recruit a striker, but De Zerbi has made clear he is not finished in the transfer market yet with Manchester City forward Savinho among those reportedly in his sights.

Allen Park — One day after star running back Jahmyr Gibbs missed the Detroit Lions' first training camp practice of the year, coach Dan Campbell said he's "not sweating" the negotiation tactic but did think an extension would be done by now.
Gibbs, the No. 12 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, became extension-eligible this offseason and is expected to receive a deal that pays him north of $20 million annually.
According to a photograph from the Lions' website, Gibbs arrived in Allen Park for camp Tuesday. He and Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson are reportedly holding in for new deals as they look to reset the running back market.
"I shouldn't have said 'bellcow,' right?" Campbell joked, implying that he gave Gibbs too much leverage when he said during the spring that the team was going to "hang our hat" on him. "'Well, hey, Coach said bellcow.'"
Campbell said he's unsure whether Gibbs will return to the practice without a new deal, and mentioned Gibbs had "a little bit of a back" issue during the conditioning test but didn't indicate that it was something serious.
