Dre Greenlaw is settling back into a San Francisco 49ers uniform after a turbulent detour to Denver, and the veteran linebacker didn't hold back describing just how difficult his lone season with the Broncos was.
"There were some dark moments," Greenlaw told The Athletic's Michael Silver. "It's tough, because I never got a chance to give them all I had. There's so much anger, frustration, and you just want to go out there and prove your worth to everybody, but you can't."
The circumstances behind Greenlaw's departure from San Francisco in the first place were more complicated than a simple business decision. As Greenlaw explained this offseason, he kept the 49ers informed throughout his 2025 free agency process, even as he negotiated with other teams, and head coach Kyle Shanahan asked to be notified before Greenlaw accepted a final offer. San Francisco ultimately could not match Denver's three-year deal, and the 49ers wished him well as he signed with the Broncos.
Once in Denver, Greenlaw's season unraveled. He suffered a significant quadriceps injury early in offseason work that sidelined him until Week 7, then dealt with a hamstring issue that ended his regular season. A one-game suspension for conduct following his Broncos debut added to the disruption. Greenlaw also struggled adjusting to defensive coordinator Vance Joseph's scheme, which frequently used five defenders on the line — a departure from the four-man fronts he'd grown accustomed to in San Francisco.
"I never felt like I was a part of the team because I wasn't out there," Greenlaw said. "I was always in the training room. I knew the trainers more than I knew the teammates."

The worst thing about NFL preseason games is you rarely get to see the best players not the field. When it comes to the Hall of Fame Game, it's more true than ever—and we're likely to be treated to a heavy helping of third-stringers and other players on the roster bubble.
While it's a **** mer for watchability, the Carolina Panthers are making the right decision to rest all of their starters for tonight's game against the Arizona Cardinals. The team is currently suffering through a flurry of major setbacks—including season-ending knee injuries for outside linebacker Nic Scourton and rookie wide receiver Chris Brazzell II.
Understandably, head coach Dave Canales is playing it safe—telling reporters earlier in the week that he won't be fielding his starters and a few other key players. So, at the least, don't expect to see these Panthers out on the gridiron tonight:

Of all of the position groups on campus in 2026, the Texas Longhorns' running backs group will look the most different from the 2025 campaign.
When the transfer portal opened, the Longhorns saw their top four running backs make the choice to take their talents elsewhere — Quintrevion Wisner left for Florida State, Christian Clark went to South Carolina, CJ Baxter transferred to Kentucky, and Jerrick Gibson landed at Purdue. While losing that much at one position group normally sends up red flags, last year's crop was missing something vital to the offense's success — explosive playmakers.
If you remove quarterback Arch Manning's production on the ground, Texas rushed for 107.1 yards per game and just seven touchdowns in 13 games. In fact, Texas failed to eclipse the 100-yard rushing mark on five occasions a year ago, including the narrow overtime win over Kentucky and the two conference losses to Florida and Georgia.
"Our inability to create any explosive runs tonight showed up and I thought we had some opportunities to do it," head coach Steve Sarkisian said after the offense sputtered in Lexington. "We missed some opportunities in the run game to maybe be a little bit better… Consistency in the run game, efficiency in the run game is critical, and we weren't efficient enough tonight in that aspect of the offense either."
Injuries played a role, as Baxter and Clark both suffered season-ending injuries in 2024 before Baxter and Wisner both battled hamstring issues early last season.

On Thursday, the Green Bay Packers had their final practice leading up to Friday's Family Night practice at Lambeau Field. It was closed to the public, but the media were able to attend the practice. Want some good news? There was confirmation today that the Packers will be streaming Family Night on Packers.com for a second straight year, which means that even out-of-market fans will be able to get a look at the team with their own eyes before the preseason starts.
If you want an extended look at the starting offense and defense, this is probably going to be your best shot, considering how conservative the Packers have been with their starters in preseasons past. For perspective, starting running back Josh Jacobs got all of two snaps in the 2025 preseason.

Whew. The hype building up around Barion Brown isn't dying down. On Thursday, the rookie wide receiver ended the New Orleans Saints' seventh training camp practice with an exclamation point by catching a touchdown pass deep downfield from Spencer Rattler. It's just the latest explosive play from a sixth-round pick most fans expected to make the squad for his skills in the return game on special teams. Instead, it's looking like Brown has real potential to help out offensively.
Rattler deserves a lot of credit on the throw that ended Thursday's practice session. He was throwing on the move, outside the pocket and under duress, but kept his eyes downfield and placed the pass where only Brown had a chance at catching it. It officially went down as a 46-yard completion that traveled more than 30 yards through the air. That's a Sunday throw. Brown came down with the pass even with veteran cornerback Isaac Yiadom covering him tightly. He's made a lot of plays against Yiadom and his fellow backup Martin Emerson Jr. on the second-string defense. There's 5,159 career defensive snaps and 169 games played between the two of them (including the playoffs).
But you can count Saints coach Kellen Moore as one of those observers who wasn't surprised to see Brown thriving on offense. Even if the team drafted him for his chops on special teams, Moore saw plenty of quality reps through Brown's college tape. Brown caught 122 passes in three years at Kentucky before transferring to LSU in 2025, where he posted a personal-best 53 receptions. That experience against a strong quality of competition prepared him for the challenges he's now facing in the NFL.
"I think we watched a lot of evidence of him playing receiver, and playing impactful plays in the SEC for a number of years, not just the LSU year, but the Kentucky year(s)," Moore told reporters after practice on Wednesday. "And when you watch all that exposure and get to know Barion, you're really fired up to have this guy, and so he's doing a great job. And I think the hardest part for these young guys really isn't the physical. You know, there's an acclimation there, but there's so much mental and so I think that's a credit to him that he's been really prepared to go out there and play."
It's a wide-open competition for the fourth and fifth roster spots at wide receiver. With the Saints having their top three locked in between Chris Olave, Jordyn Tyson, and Devaughn Vele, guys who started training camp on the roster bubble like Brown need every rep they can get to stand out and build their case. Brown is certainly making the most of his chances so far. With joint practices and preseason games against other teams coming up fast, he'll get more opportunities to prove he belongs.

Allen Park — Multiple Detroit Lions were either absent from Thursday's practice or left early to be evaluated for potential injuries.
Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, running back Isiah Pacheco, offensive lineman Juice Scruggs and cornerback D.J. Reed — all of whom did not have any previously known injuries — were not spotted Thursday.
Running back Sione Vaki (nose, eye) and linebackers Malcolm Rodriguez (ankle) and Jimmy Rolder (hamstring), as well as defensive ends Derrick Moore (groin) and Payton Turner (back), also were not spotted, though we know each of the injuries they're dealing with.
Vaki will be "out for a little bit," Lions coach Dan Campbell said Tuesday; Rodriguez left early from Tuesday's practice; Rolder will be down for "a while;" Moore is expected to be back within the next week or so; and there's no been no update on Turner, who popped up with a stiff back after Detroit's first session of training camp July 29.
Defensive lineman Mekhi Wingo (groin) and cornerback De'Shawn Rucker (ankle) were early exits Thursday. It was an extremely humid day in Allen Park, and a number of players were either absent or limited due to cramping.

A pageant queen recently crowned Miss North Carolina USA has been stripped of her ****** le after a string of alleged racist posts resurfaced.
Brittany Boltinhouse, 27, was formally dethroned on Wednesday by pageant organizers A Blaize Productions after what it said was "a thorough review of recently surfaced information".
The organization did not disclose what Boltinhouse had allegedly posted but said the decision had been taken after "careful consideration, multiple conversations, and in consultation with the Miss USA Organization".
The organization said it believes "people are capable of growth" and that "grace and accountability can coexist" but the organization must also uphold the standards and values expected of ****** leholders.
Boltinhouse won the ****** le in June and has been preparing to represent North Carolina at the 75th annual Miss USA pageant in Miami later this month.

The Cardinals didn't draft running back Jeremiyah Love with the third overall pick so he could sit on the bench, but they're not going to declare him the starter just yet.
Currently, the Cardinals' depth chart lists Tyler Allgeier as the first-string running back. Love is second string.
Realistically, there's almost no chance that Love, barring injury, isn't the Cardinals' top running back for the regular season. But NFL teams often wait until a rookie has earned a starting job before listing him as the starter on the team's published depth chart.

On Wednesday night, the Philadelphia Phillies looked to secure the series win against the Washington Nationals, following their 5-0 dismantling of their National League East rivals on Tuesday night. The Phillies would look towards their rookie pitcher, Andrew Painter, to secure the win against Washington.
Painter would struggle out of the gate, allowing a single run in the top of the first inning, which is the latest in what has been a tough run in his last five Major League appearances, allowing the opposing team to score in each of those outings. But similarly to his previous outing against the Baltimore Orioles, once Philadelphia's rookie got through the first frame, he found his footing on the mound.
Just as things were looking up for the 23-year-old, the Phillies would take him out after only four innings of work, with the team reporting that they were doing so due to tightness in his left hamstring. Entering the fifth inning of the match, Don Mattingly would look towards reliever Tim Mayza to take over for the rookie.
When all was said and done for Painter, he would end the night with four innings on the rubber, totaling 63 pitches, allowing three hits, a single earned run, as well as fanning four batters in the process. Given the lower-than-usual run tally, Painter's ERA managed to drop from 6.72 to 6.48 over the four frames he appeared in.

Given the recent changes in the Detroit Lions' linebacker room, Derrick Barnes will be a key figure for the 2026 season. Alex Anzalone departed in the offseason and rookie Jimmy Rolder will miss some time due to a recent hamstring injury.
According to Detroit Lions senior writer and insider Tim Twentyman, Barnes has been expanding his role on defense.
Through the first couple days of training camp, we've seen Barnes play an increased role in passing downs when the Lions are in nickel (five defensive backs and two linebackers). Keeanu Benton benched for his own good
Benton has been the team's starting nose tackle since being drafted but we've always contended that he was out of position. New defensive coordinator Patrick Graham agrees. Benton was moved to defensive end as a backup but in a position where he can flourish and Yahya Black is listed as the starting nose tackle in his place.
We weren't sure if McCarthy might try to find a way to make Herbig a co-starter with T.J. Watt but instead just has him listed as second string despite signing a massive contract extension this offseason.

The list grew having added third-year Jacob Cowing suffered a hip flexor strain and missed the Niners' practice on Aug. 5.

The Lakers spent this offseason spending big to revamp their roster to better fit around Luka Doncic and his preferred style of play. Austin Reaves returns as a secondary playmaker on a hefty new contract. They traded for Walker Kessler to be the pick-setting, alley-oop finishing big man Doncic prefers to play with. And they made a host of other moves — including parting ways with LeBron James — to bring in role players who should be a better stylistic fit with Doncic.
All of that only works if Doncic is healthy.
Which he wasn't at the end of last season due to a hamstring injury, he missed all of the Lakers' playoff run. In an email to fans, Doncic told them he is "100% healthy" now and ready for a big season.
Concerns about Doncic's durability were a key reason former Mavericks GM Nico Harrison traded Doncic in the first place. The Lakers have bet big on a more mature Doncic, 27, being in his best condition and staying healthy when it matters. He averaged 33.5 points, 8.3 ***** ists and 7.7 rebounds per game last season — when healthy, he remains one of the game's elite players and was named First-Team All-NBA (he only played 64 games, one below the league's 65-game cutoff, but was given an exemption due to "extraordinary circumstances" because he missed time for the birth of his child).
The Lakers looked to get Doncic some help this season by not only re-signing Reaves but adding ball-handling guards Quentin Grimes and Collin ***** ton. Expect JJ Redick to experiment with some three-guard lineups using that group, although the challenge becomes it forces Doncic (6'8") to guard bigger players, which can take a physical toll.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is reportedly unhappy with Cricket Ireland for hosting Afghanistan in a five-match ODI series, even though England continue to play Afghanistan in ICC tournaments.

The five-match ODI series between Ireland and Afghanistan began on Wednesday in Bready. According to a report in The Guardian, Ireland's decision to host Afghanistan could affect its future cricket ties with England.

Ireland's move has put its relationship with the ECB under strain. England have refused to play bilateral cricket against Afghanistan because of the Taliban regime's restrictions on women's rights.

The ECB's stance is based on concerns over what its chair, Richard Thompson, has described as the Taliban's "gender apartheid".

However, England continue to face Afghanistan in ICC events, where tournament points and **** les are at stake.

The ECB's policy is supported by the UK government, but Cricket Ireland has taken a different approach. Ireland has built close ties with the Afghanistan Cricket Board and is hosting five ODIs this month.

Under a reciprocal arrangement, Ireland will tour the United Arab Emirates in March next year to play Afghanistan in one Test, three ODIs and three T20Is.

England previously played one-off Tests against Ireland at Lord's before the home Ashes series in 2019 and 2023. Next year, however, England have chosen to play Bangladesh in a warm-up Test instead.

England's men's team also faced Afghanistan in the Champions Trophy in Lahore last year.

While the ECB does not schedule bilateral matches against Afghanistan, it has supported Afghan women cricketers in other ways. This summer, it organised a tour of England for the Afghan Refugee Women's team and invited them to attend the T20 World Cup final at Lord's.

Most members of the Afghanistan women's team fled the country after the Taliban returned to power in 2021 and banned women's sport. Many of the players later settled in Australia.

Afghanistan remain the only ICC Full Member without a women's cricket programme, but the ICC has not suspended them.

Australia, South Africa and New Zealand have also refused to play bilateral cricket against Afghanistan. Ireland, however, has joined the West Indies, Zimbabwe and the four Asian ICC Full Members in continuing bilateral cricket with Afghanistan.

The ECB's relationship with Cricket Ireland has already been under pressure. England declined an invitation to take part in the proposed Euro Nations Cup next year, which would also feature Scotland, the Netherlands and Italy, citing a packed international schedule.

England's men's team played a three-match T20I series in Ireland last September, but the ECB sent a second-string squad. No further men's matches between the two teams are currently scheduled.

England's women's team, however, will host Ireland in a three-match ODI series next month.

As much as I prefer to start on an upward trajectory, this has to be addressed.
The Texans constrained their media affiliates on what they can tweet and communicate regarding depth charts, player groupings, and roster configuration. Do they not realize there are eight practices open to the public and preseason games? Fans will find out sooner or later what they're hiding. My hunch, first-rounder Keylan Rutledge doesn't look good and is not participating with the first or second string.
This is more illogical than embarrassing… and it's fairly embarrassing. There are eight practices open to the public, who have no media affiliation nor restriction on posting on social media. Word is going to get out one way or another as to what's happening at camp. If anything, trying to conceal it will only make fans search harder.
Watson in very short time and with even less production wedged himself onto this roster as an integral part of the system. His blocking and route running are highly valued ******* ets by Offensive Coordinator Nick Caley. Plus, the injury to Jaylin Noel opened up more reps for the veteran. Depending on Noel's timeline, Watson has the inside track to not only make the roster but start as the WR3.

What happens at tight end, now?
A significant question that has arisen is the fact that starting tight end John Bates is out for at least a couple of weeks. What does this mean for the Washington run offense, and is there a tight end ready to be promoted if Bates' injury becomes an ongoing dilemma for the 2026 season?
This "could be" a major obstacle for the 2026 season if Bates does not fully heal before testing his injured/strained hamstring. No, Bates is not an above-average receiving tight end in the NFL. But he is certainly one of the better blocking tight ends in the NFL. For those old enough, think what Don Warren meant to Joe Gibbs and the Redskins offenses during his lengthy 14-year career in Washington (1979-92).
NFL **** yst Brian Baldinger has praised Bates' blocking more than a few times. Baldinger has even referred to Bates as, "the best blocking tight end in the NFL." The 'JBB' is the 'John Bates' Block,' as Baldinger has stated in his NFL film reviews. So, this injury to Bates could be a major headache if he does not heal and remain healthy this season. The Commanders need Bates. But what if they don't get a healthy Bates in 2026?
TE Ben Sinnott, plain and simple, MUST step up. Newly signed TE Chig Okonkwo this offseason is more of a hybrid tight end/receiver. He is not an in-the-trenches tight end like Bates. Zach Ertz was a very good receiving tight end, but not nearly the blocker Bates is. Sinnott is more physical than Ertz, but still far from a Bates, thus far after his two seasons.

"I ***** love Foucault. I ***** with Foucault hard," enthused Supriya Ganesh, star of The Pitt, in a recent interview with New York magazine. Ganesh, who uses she/they ***** ouns, never felt comfortable with rigid gender and ***** uality labels, and Foucault's The History of ***** uality, Volume I showed her how these categories have in fact varied across cultures and through history: "I think this idea of defining ***** uality is very new—or at least that's the argument he's making … it really illuminated a lot of that for me."
Ganesh was unwittingly providing fresh evidence for the central argument of The Frenchmen: Or, My Life in Theory, which proposes that a small group of dead twentieth-century intellectuals are "crucial for understanding the world we inhabit today." Written by Emily Eakin, a senior editor at The New York Times Book Review, The Frenchmen focuses on eight French or French-speaking theorists (Louis Althusser, Roland Barthes, Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Félix Guattari, Jacques Lacan, and Paul de Man) who, she argues, "permanently alter[ed] how we think not only about bedrock philosophical ideas but about the role of language in shaping those beliefs and everything else."
Eakin's Frenchmen are an eclectic group, differing in interests, politics, and methods. Two were practicing psychoanalysts. Most were academics, working in fields including philosophy, linguistics, semiotics, anthropology, history, and comparative literature. They wrote on topics as varied as schizophrenia, prison architecture, photography, Edgar Allan Poe, and (in Barthes's case) their mom. What unites them, according to Eakin, is their emphasis on systems, as opposed to individuals, and their attention to the complex and contradictory ways that language operates. Instead of taking for granted (as the existentialists did) that people are autonomous free agents defined by their choices, they wrote about the ways people and texts are created and constrained by powerful yet unstable structures of knowledge and language—an idea that resonates in our era of inescapable algorithms and artificial intelligence. ("Chatbots frighten us," Eakin writes, "to the degree that they make literal theory's suggestion that thought does not require a human thinker.")
"Deconstruction," an ***** ytical method developed by Derrida, came to define French theory and is at the heart of Eakin's book. She defines it as "a style of reading" that "took apart" a text and left it in pieces, showing how it was undone by its own internal contradictions. A common deconstructive move is to show how the binary terms that a text's argument depends on—for example, speech versus writing—are not actually opposed after all. In classic Derridean fashion, Eakin structures her book around an oft-repeated binary between "theory" and "real life" that she sees as ripe for deconstructing, contrasting the Frenchmen's "stringent antihumanism" with their all-too-human lives; academic t

Detroit (55-58) has won four straight and is one of several teams chasing the final AL wild card spot, moving within 1 1/2 games of Cleveland. Seattle (55-59) has lost nine of 13 and dropped 3 1/2 games behind Houston in the AL West.
The Tigers have scored at least eight runs in six straight games, tied for the longest such streak in franchise history.
Melton (7-1) continued his string of dominance since starting the season on the injured list. The right-hander, who has not allowed a run in his last 14 innings, struck out four, walked two and gave up three hits, lowering his ERA to 1.58 in 12 starts. He did not allow a Seattle batter to advance past second base.
The Tigers pulled ahead in the third inning. With two outs, Riley Greene hit a grounder to shortstop Colt Emerson, who made a poor throw to first, allowing a run to score. Keith followed with his single to right that made it 3-0.

No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza is going to get most of the attention from the Las Vegas Raiders' rookie class, but he's not likely to play much at the start of the season. If it takes time to get him on the field, second-round pick safety Treydan Stukes may be the highest-drafted rookie to see playing time first.
Stukes is going to turn 25 in September, which is quite old for a rookie. The Raiders passed on some good players to select him in the second round, so they need him to be an impact player quickly.
However, he has failed to impress early in training camp. The Athletic's Sam Warren put together a stock report for a number of players on the Raiders' roster, and he believes Stukes' stock is down.
"Stukes hasn't struggled in camp. He's been sound in his ******* ignments, as he was during the offseason program. But the second-round pick has earned fewer opportunities than might be expected," Warren wrote.
"Stukes has yet to receive a first-team snap in any competitive period. That strays from his role this offseason, where he got chances with the ones at both safety and nickel. Veterans Taron Johnson and Jeremy Chinn missed some of those practices, however, allowing Stukes to step in. With both suited up for all training camp sessions, the rookie has been relegated to second string. He will have to show something once the pads come on to crack the rotation."

We know who the Arizona Cardinals will start at quarterback in the Hall of Fame Game on Thursday against the Carolina Panthers. The team announced it on Monday morning.
That means the game will be a gripping battle between Beck, a third-round pick, and Kenny Pickett, the Panthers' veteran backup quarterback.
Beck will likely start with a bunch of third-string players and players deeper on the roster, but it will be what the Cardinals need to see — can he handle the speed of the NFL game and handle offensive operations — the huddle, the communication and more.
The game kicks off Thursday at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. Arizona time) and will air on NBC.

Star striker Thembi Kgatlana scored as South Africa edged Burkina Faso 1-0 on Tuesday to squeeze into the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarter-finals in Morocco.
Mexico-based Kgatlana struck her second goal of the tournament after 21 minutes in Casablanca, then her team withstood continuous second-half pressure in a tense match.
The winning goal will haunt Burkinabe central defender Madinatou Rouamba, who failed to cut off a cross from Fikile Magama, leaving Kgatlana to tap the ball past goalkeeper Nina Dabilgou.
Burkina Faso were awarded a penalty just two minutes into the second half, but the decision by the Cameroonian referee was reversed after a VAR review.
The rest of the half saw a string of Burkinabe attacks, but a lack of creativity, wild shooting and an impressive display from goalkeeper Kaylin Swart defied the west Africans.

The Detroit Lions announced another set of roster moves on Tuesday afternoon.
Detroit signed former Carolina Panthers running back Raheem Blackshear. In a corresponding move, the Lions waived wide receiver Lawrence Keys with an injury designation.
Blackshear, 28, has played in 41 career NFL games, totaling 203 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns on 52 carries across the 2022-24 seasons with the Panthers. The 5-foot-9, 190 pound back spent last season on the Tennessee ******* ans, Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets' practice squads.
Keys was one of a trio of Lions that exited Monday's training camp practice to be evaluated for injury. Lions head coach Dan Campbell revealed on Tuesday morning that Keys was dealing with a hamstring injury.
Lions running back Sione Vaki also left Monday's practice early and Campbell revealed that he had suffered a broken nose. Vaki's injury has opened the door for second-year running back Jacob Saylors to see an increased role. With star running back Jahmyr Gibbs still a hold-in, the Lions had a need for another body in the backfield like Blackshear.

Carson Beck had "no clue" he was going to start the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game until this week. He was the last to know.
As (almost) everyone knows, veteran quarterbacks don't generally play in the Hall of Fame Game.
The third-round rookie is new to this thing, though.
"I thought I was going to play, but I had no expectations," Beck said Tuesday, via Darren Urban of the team website. "Obviously our schedule has been crazy right now. But I'm looking forward to it."
Coach Mike LaFleur has not publicly addressed playing time for his quarterbacks, but with Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew expected to spend the night on the sideline, Beck likely sees most of the playing time. Fourth-stringer Kedon Slovis also could play.

After one day without an audience, the New England Patriots returned to the fields behind Gillette Stadium on Tuesday for their ninth practice of training camp. The fans were treated to an entertaining session.
To recap it, please visit our Patriots training camp notebook. In the meantime, here is who caught our eye during the two-hour session.
The deep passing game: Kayshon Boutte, A.J. Brown and Mack Hollins, the biggest top-level receivers on New England's roster, made several big plays on Tuesday. Their stat lines show how involved they were: Boutte caught a team-leading five passes in team drills, followed by Brown and Hollins hauling in four receptions each.
Boutte did most of his damage against the second-string defense, and remains the factual WR4 behind Brown, Romeo Doubs and DeMario Douglas, but it is clear just how much trust both Drake Maye and Tommy DeVito have in him. He rewarded that trust with multiple downfield receptions on Tuesday — including in both QB's two-minute drill situations.
The same was true for Hollins, whose most notable play was a deep sideline shot from DeVito for what would have been a 40-plus-yard touchdown in a true game setting. Overall, the veteran has been productive the last two days and continues to be a key target in select situations.

The Dodgers entered the 2026 season with ambitions of becoming team to three-peat in 26 years. Following Monday's trade deadline, they echoed that sentiment with a summer blockbuster and an encore.
Their string of deals began late Saturday night, as after suffering a 3-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox, they struck a deal that infuriated nearly the entire baseball world. The Dodgers landed two-time defending AL Cy Young award winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers while sending away outfield prospect Zyhir Hope, right-hander River Ryan and pitching prospect Brady Smith.
The addition of Skubal not only invigorates an already vaunted rotation (when fully healthy), it gives the Dodgers another left-handed option that is a proven innings eater. Before Skubal needed surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow, he had logged at least six innings of work in six of his first seven starts. He hasn't matched his pre-injury average start length since returning on June 13, but he has logged at least five innings in all but one of his nine final starts in Detroit.
For a Dodgers rotation that is still missing Shohei Ohtani, Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow, adding Skubal in the mix keeps the six-man rotation as the norm for the pitching staff down the stretch. With Emmet Sheehan's demotion to Triple-A, the current rotation features Skubal, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Roki Sasaki, Justin Wrobleski and Eric Lauer, and until the other three starters return, the Dodgers could implement a weekly bullpen game. Skubal will certainly headline the four-man rotation in the postseason, and the Dodgers have seven options to choose to accompany him come October.
Gauging what the postseason rotation will be a work in progress until October arrives. Skubal and Yamamoto are shoe-ins at the top, but the final two spots are completely up for grabs. Blake Snell is set to return next week after a final rehab start, while Tyler Glasnow has yet to embark on his rehab ***** ignment. The latter is projected to return sometime in September. Ohtani's status for returning to the mound in the regular season is unclear, though the team expects him back in October. The trio of Sasaki, Wrobleski and Lauer all were used exclusively in relief last year for both the Dodgers and Blue Jays.

The Philadelphia Eagles will be without two receivers during Tuesday's training camp practice, with DeVonta Smith and rookie Makai Lemon sidelined by hamstring injuries. The team has not expressed long-term concern about either player. Their absences appear to be precautionary as Philadelphia manages its roster through the physical portion of camp and moves closer to the preseason opener.
Smith's absence removes the Eagles' unquestioned No. 1 receiver from practice. Philadelphia has little reason to expose one of its most important offensive players to additional risk during an early-August workout, particularly when hamstring injuries can worsen if a player returns too quickly.
Smith already has an established relationship with Jalen Hurts and does not need every training camp repetition to secure his role. His absence will allow the coaching staff to evaluate other receivers with the first-team offense while giving Smith time to recover.
Lemon had recently participated in individual drills without joining team periods. Ryan Fowler of NBC Sports Philadelphia and Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the rookie was fine and that the previous issue was not considered significant. He has since returned to the injury report and will not practice. The Eagles have not indicated whether his latest absence is related to the hamstring problem that limited him earlier in the offseason.
Unlike Smith, Lemon needs practice repetitions to learn Sean Mannion's offense, develop timing with Philadelphia's quarterbacks and earn a place within a crowded receiver rotation. The two absences should create additional opportunities for Hollywood Brown, Dontayvion Wicks, Elijah Moore, Darius Cooper and Johnny Wilson. Wicks and Cooper have already made notable plays during camp, while several receivers remain in contention for roster spots and defined offensive roles.
