NEW YORK (AP) — Ancient mummy DNA recovered in Chile has yielded the firmest evidence yet that European colonization brought smallpox to the Americas.
Smallpox was one of the deadliest diseases in human history before it was eradicated in 1980, largely thanks to vaccination. For centuries, the virus had killed about one-third of the people it infected and left most survivors with deep and sometimes disfiguring scars.
Outbreaks struck Asia and Europe and eventually spread to the Americas, where colonial writings, administrative records and missionary reports documented how it killed millions and devastated Indigenous populations who had never been exposed to the virus.
Now there's scientific evidence for the spread: An ******* ysis of Chilean mummies provides the strongest genetic link yet to the virus as it existed outside of the Americas, and provides a better picture of how it reached remote populations through colonization, said geneticist Shigeki Nakagome with Trinity College Dublin.
In the new study, Nakagome and colleagues examined 13 bone samples previously collected from an archaeological site at Camarones, in northern Chile.

In this episode of Behind the Ticker, Brad Roth, CIO of Thor Financial Technologies, chats with Young Jae Lee, Senior Investment Manager at Pictet ******* et Management about what traditional emerging market ETFs capture, what they don't, and why the Pictet Emerging Markets Rising Economies ETF (RISE) offers true diversification.
Prefer to watch this conversation? You can do that here or on our YouTube channel.
Emerging markets ETFs are secretly tech bets. The top five holdings in the MSCI EM benchmark mirror the top five in the S&P 500 almost sector-for-sector. Buy traditional EM ETFs and you're really just doubling down on the same tech risk.
Pictet's new ETF, RISE, kicks out the biggest names in EM. It excludes Korea, Taiwan, and China entirely, even though those three countries make up more than 70% of the standard benchmark. The bet: real emerging-market exposure means growing working-age populations, not aging economies riding on legacy index weight.
Demographics are EM's version of AI. Borrowing from the Solow Growth Model, Young Jae Lee argues population growth is what actually drives GDP in developing markets like India, Brazil, Indonesia, and Mexico. That demographic engine deserves the same portfolio spotlight in EM allocations that AI gets in US ones.

Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) is one of the high growth stocks to buy right now. On June 14, Eli Lilly announced positive results from the Phase 3 BRUIN CLL-322 clinical trial, which evaluated the addition of Jaypirca (pirtobrutinib) to a time-limited venetoclax and rituximab regimen for patients with relapsed or refractory chronic lymphocytic leukemia/CLL or small lymphocytic lymphoma/SLL. The study met its primary endpoint, showing that the pirtobrutinib combination reduced the risk of disease progression or death by 45% compared to the control arm of venetoclax and rituximab alone.
The trial enrolled 639 patients, nearly 80% of whom had been previously treated with a covalent BTK inhibitor, making the findings highly relevant to current clinical practices. At a median follow-up of 27.3 months, the median progression-free survival/PFS in the pirtobrutinib arm had not been reached, compared to 39.7 months in the control arm. These benefits were consistent across various high-risk patient subgroups, and the pirtobrutinib combination also showed a significant advantage in the time to next treatment.
The safety profile of the regimen was consistent with the known profiles of the individual medicines, with minimal additive toxicity observed when adding pirtobrutinib. Discontinuation rates due to treatment-related adverse events were similar between the two study arms. Based on these findings, Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) plans to submit the data to global regulatory authorities with the goal of expanding the use of Jaypirca as a potential new standard of care in previously treated CLL/SLL populations.
Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) is a healthcare company that develops human pharmaceutical products, including cardiometabolic health, oncology, and immunology products.
While we acknowledge the potential of LLY as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk. BeOne Medicines AG (NASDAQ:ONC) is one of the most promising healthcare stocks according to Wall Street ******* ysts. On June 3, Citizens kept its Market Outperform rating and $396 price target on BeOne Medicines AG (NASDAQ:ONC). The firm made the call after BeOne presented robust tumor clinical data at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2026 conference.
Citizens said that data for three drugs in BeOne's pipeline caught its attention. The first was BGB-43395, which BeOne is testing in a common and hard-to-treat form of breast cancer known as HR+/HER2- metastatic breast cancer. The other two are BG-C9074, an antibody-drug conjugate targeting ovarian cancer maintenance and BGB-B2033, a bispecific antibody that BeOne is evaluating in liver cancer.
Citizens noted that in its view, what makes the pipeline noteworthy is that each of these drugs is going after patient populations where current treatments are either too toxic, face resistance problems, or simply do not exist. For that reason, the firm sees BeOne at an inflection point where its tumor strategy is no longer just theoretical.
The firm said it arrived at the $396 price target through a discounted earnings and revenue multiple ******* ysis. It added that it has confidence in BeOne funding its ambitious pipeline because the company holds $4.85 billion in cash, carries more cash than debt, and generates gross profit margins of 88%.
BeOne Medicines AG (NASDAQ:ONC) is a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing novel therapies for the treatment of cancer. Its pipeline includes candidates designed to address unmet needs in solid tumors and hematologic malignancies.

Local ratings are in for the United States men’s national soccer team’s World Cup match against Paraguay, and the cities most interested in the game may not be the ones you expect.
According to Michael Mulvihill, the President of Insights and ***** ytics at Fox Corporation, Kansas City had the highest English-language ratings for United States-Paraguay.
Kansas City recorded a 9.2 rating and a 29 share. A rating is the percentage of total households in a market that tuned into the game, while share is the percentage of households watching TV that were watching the game. So 9.2% of Kansas City households watched United States-Paraguay, and 29% of households watching TV in Kansas City were tuned into the match.
The story is slightly different when Spanish viewership is included. Combined English- and Spanish-language ratings show Los Angeles topping all markets with a 13.4 rating and a 42 share. For comparison, throughout the entire 2025 World Series (Los Angeles Dodgers-Toronto Blue Jays), Los Angeles averaged a 17.6 rating and a 53 share.
The combined English + Spanish ratings generally highlight cities with large Hispanic populations (Los Angeles, Miami, and Houston are the top three). But the English-language ratings are far more interesting. Boston was No. 2 with an 8.6 rating, while San Diego, Dallas, and St. Louis tied at 7.3.

We just covered Forget AI: Legendary Value Investor Seth Klarman Is Buying These 10 Value Stocks in 2026. Molina Healthcare (NYSE:MOH) ranks #8 (see Seth Klarman Is Buying These 5 Value Stocks in 2026).Baupost's Stake: $84,460,000Molina Healthcare (NYSE:MOH) is a managed care company focused on government-sponsored health programs — Medicaid, Medicare, and the ACA Marketplace. Its moat lies in long-standing state government contracts, deep expertise serving low-income populations, and an infrastructure built specifically around Medicaid managed care. The stock has been hammered amid Medicaid rate adjustments and elevated medical costs. But bulls argue this is a cyclical trough, not a structural problem. Medicaid managed care has a well-documented cycle — costs overshoot state reimbursement rates, companies take losses, states adjust rates higher, and margins recover. Molina Healthcare's (NYSE:MOH) CEO has explicitly called 2026 the margin trough.Q1 2026 provided the first hard evidence of recovery. Adjusted EPS came in at $2.35, crushing the $1.29 consensus, sending the stock up 15% in a day. Bank of America issued a rare double upgrade to Buy, lifting its price target to $250 and projecting EPS could reach $30 by 2029 — nearly twice the Street consensus of $17.32.

In some ways, Mexican food has actually become as American as apple pie.

The autonomous trucking race has a new entrant with a distinctly old-school playbook. Bot Auto, fresh off completing its first fully humanless commercial load on a public highway, is betting its next chapter on a freight industry veteran who has spent nearly three decades learning how to build trucking networks.
Brett Suma is joining as president and chief operating officer, bringing with him David Stemm as vice president of commercial operations and Jessica Kane as vice president of commercial finance. The trio founded TrailerHawk.ai together before Wabash acquired it in 2025. They are now reuniting to tackle one of the industry’s most complex operational challenges: turning a technological milestone into a repeatable commercial business.
“We have proven that humanless commercial truckloads are possible, but we understand that technology alone cannot drive value creation,” said Dr. Xiaodi Hou, founder and CEO of Bot Auto. “This industry is complex for good reasons, and building a scalable autonomous freight product requires humility, flexibility, and relentless creativity.”
Suma’s freight education started at age 19, working nights at Knight Transportation to pay for college. From the beginning, trucking had him hooked. From 1999 through the company’s explosive growth period in the early 2000s, he watched the founders build a methodical freight network to feed their growing fleet. It started by identifying corridors with the right freight density, matching them to driver populations, then constructing facilities to support 125 to 150 trucks per market.
“It was very formulaic,” Suma said. “You had to identify a corridor that fit your network that had access to a certain level of inbound and outbound freight to be able to support the driver population that you would need in order to support the actual construction of the facility.”

Older Humpbacks Prove Better at Wooing Mates
As humpback whale populations recover, researchers are gaining a richer understanding of these wondrous creatures. A new study suggests it may take years for humpbacks to learn how to successfully serenade a mate.
Before being decimated by whaling a century ago, there were around 120,000 humpbacks globally, but over decades their numbers were reduced by as much as 95 percent. Since countries agreed to ban commercial whaling in 1986, humpback whales have been rebounding and have nearly recovered in some regions.

MANHATTAN (KSNT) – This year is the 50th anniversary of the first case of herbicide resistance in Kansas, and Kansas State University is reflecting on what has been done and what’s left to do with the issue.
The first known case of herbicide resistance in Kansas came in 1976 when populations of kochia, an early spring weed/herb native to Europe and Asia, growing near railroads were found to be resistant to atrazine, a popular herbicide used in corn and sorghum fields. Today, this resistant kochia can be found across the state.
