As we inch closer and closer to fall (you already took a sip of a Pumpkin Spice something, I know it), we can feel the optimism spreading within the basketball world.
The offseason is full of transactions, moves to improve, and swings to make things … fit. That's the key word. Context, opportunity and how a new acquisition works within what a team does will end up defining how well a transaction ends up being.
It's easy to view moves in a vacuum. Teams need to acquire talent to fit a need, talent needs an opportunity to work, etc. But my curiosity always forces me to dig a little deeper: Maybe adding this player did not address every weakness a team has, but how did it make them stronger? What can teams do with these additions that they could not do last year?
So with that in mind, I present to you my six pack of underrated fits with NBA training camps opening later this month.
This is less about Klay Thompson returning to All-Star form, less about Klay being Ray Allen to Miami 2.0, and more about the fit between the human, the player and the franchise. It's clear Thompson wants to compete at a high level, and the Heat are always going to work to compete at a high level, especially after cashing in their chips to get Giannis Antetokounmpo. Erik Spoelstra has a knack for understanding his roster, knowing where his team needs to go and getting the most out of his roster. It feels like a natural meeting of the minds.

Tua Tagovailoa will start on Friday versus his former team, the Dolphins, the preseason finale. This is notoriously a spot where the starting QB would sit and rest for Week 1. It also appears Michael Penix Jr. will not play on Friday, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Rap also said Tua hasn't looked good during camp and preseason, leading Atlanta toward Penix as the starter.
Penix is participating in 11-on-11 drills at practice and looks good, per Rapoport, but hasn't seen live action. It's looking like he'll be ready to play Week 1 coming off another torn ACL suffered last season. If Penix is good to go, he could be the starter to open 2026 against the Steelers. That could bode well for the Falcons' passing game if Penix is healthy and slinging the rock — most notably for Drake London and Kyle Pitts Sr. Penix isn't anyone you should consider in fantasy outside of deep 2-QB leagues, but is a name to file away as a potential waiver in some cases (if he starts).

Just when you thought Starbucks couldn't make its cult-fave Pumpkin Spice Latte any more enticing, the chain went and put its signature bevvy in the hands of Off Campus star Belmont Cameli.
To celebrate the August 25 return of the PSL, Starbucks dropped a promo commercial starring the widely beloved actor alongside another icon, Martha Stewart.
"It smells like my house in the fall," Martha gushes as she clutches her PSL, topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin spice. "It's perfect." That's when Belmont appears on the screen with his own iced version. He shoots Martha a flirty glance and declares, "You would get it hot."
Her response? So Martha: "Should I know him?"
Naturally, fans are losing it over the on-screen exchange—and, well, Belmont Cameli in general. "DOES HE COUNT AS A TOPPING?" one fan wrote. "I feel like a dog hearing all my favorite words," another chimed in.

Mama June's daughter, Pumpkin, says her online career affected a major decision involving her child. The reality star claims a Georgia private school withdrew her daughter's acceptance after reviewing her social media. However, Pumpkin says the issue never came up during the earlier admissions process. She believes the school should have raised its concerns much sooner.
In a new TMZ interview, Pumpkin said she contacted John Milledge Academy about enrolling her daughter. She described the admissions staff as friendly and communicative at first.

It feels cliche to ponder the possibility of the Pittsburgh Pirates shutting Paul Skenes down, even in what increasingly looks like another lost season for him and his team.
His overall numbers are far from bad relative to the rest of baseball. His 3.88 ERA is fine. His 2.99 FIP, which measures a pitcher's effectiveness independent of the defense behind him, is very good. So is his 1.12 WHIP, which measures walks and hits per innings pitched.
Yes, his velocity is down, noticeably. Skenes topped out at 96.5 mph on Aug. 11, and his season average is at 96.8 mph on his four-seam vs a 98.2 mph average in 2025. No, he doesn't look like the dominant Cy Young-caliber ace he was his first two seasons. And yes, that reality raises existential questions about the club's future, specifically his future with it. He also hasn't fully turned into a proverbial pumpkin the way the narrative around this team would sometimes have one think.

It nevertheless became a lot harder to ignore the signs that Skenes may not complete the season Aug. 11 in Miami. Manager Don Kelly pulled Skenes after just five innings and 65 pitches against the Marlins, though he said after the game that the decision wasn't injury related.

The first two games of this series against Atlanta, the NL East front-runner and a possible postseason opponent should the Yankees go deep in October, have gone almost as well as possible, considering the glaring holes in the New York lineup. Starting pitching has been a huge reason for that success. Max Fried and Gerrit Cole combined to allow two runs through 13.1 innings in the opening contests. Should similar events unfold today, a sweep is tantalizingly close.
The Yankees theoretically have the right guy on the mound to do it. Cam Schlittler is in the middle of a dominant season, one that has him at the head of the pack for the AL Cy Young (or at least neck-and-neck with Dylan Cease). He's admittedly in a bit of a rough spell, with a 3.86 ERA over his last seven starts. But in his final two starts of July, he allowed one run in 13.2 innings prior to his ****** py outing against St. Louis, so let's not fret he's turned into a pumpkin.
Anyone who has been watching Cam knows what to expect. He brings the heat. His four-seamer, cutter, and sinker account for 90 percent of his pitches and he has been overpowering with them. When he does sprinkle in the curve, it is overwhelmingly to lefties. If you are a right-handed hitter, prepare for the gas.
The Braves turn to Grant Homes to prevent the sweep. Holmes is in the middle of a perfectly cromulent season of his own, for what it is worth. Today should be a juxtaposition of styles. While Schlittler attacks with the No. v1, Holmes will throw the kitchen sink at Yankee hitters. Righties can expect to see his slider, four-seamer, and sinker. He attacks lefties, meanwhile, with the slider, four-seamer, cutter, curve, and changeup. All told, he throws the slider more than any other pitch so expect to see it frequently today.
With a righty on the mound, the Yankee lineup is littered with lefties. In fact, it's actually identical to the one that they deployed on Friday against Holmes' fellow righty, Tyler Mahle. Heliot Ramos and beloved rookie George Lombard, Jr. are the only righties starting today. Ben Rice, fresh off ending an 11-game homerless streak, hits second. The aforementioned Lombard, who went oppo taco for a homer of his own yesterday, hits seventh. Newly acquired Luis García Jr. hits cleanup. Perhaps unsurprisingly as a former division rival of Atlanta, García has the most familiarity with Holmes of any Yankee batter, the erstwhile Nat possessing a 4-for-10 line against Holmes, including a longball.
