Roberto De Zerbi held his first press conference ahead of Saturday's Premier League opening match at Brentford. While the press conference was overshadowed slightly by the fresh news that an agreement has been reached with Manchester City for the purchase of Savinho, there was still plenty to talk about in the match.
For starters, as mentioned previously RDZ named the new Tottenham Hotspur leadership group, which includes Micky van de Ven as club captain, along with Pedro Porro, Ben Davies, James Maddison, and Archie Gray as vice captains. But two of that group will not feature tomorrow vs. Brentford — Micky and Porro were both ruled out of contention, as was Pape Matar Sarr.
"Micky is not on the list tomorrow like Pedro Porro. James Maddison is inside [it], Solanke inside, Udogie, Fernandes also. Sarr not because he felt some pain, but nothing big. Kudus is almost ready.
"Today [Micky] worked with us, with the group and he is going very well. He suffered a problem during the pre-season of Australia, I don't know if it was the flight, but not a big problem. We have Senesi, we have Ben Davies and in the right condition to play the game tomorrow."
A lot to unpack there! Spurs have been strangely silent on Micky's absence from preseason, and we all **** umed it was injury related. De Zerbi didn't provide much of an update, but Micky's been in the club socials a LOT lately, and was just named Captain so if there was a major issue we'd probably know about it by now. Sounds like he'll be coming back sooner rather than later. Pedro Porro's absence is likely just fitness related; he only just returned from his post-World Cup break. Sounds like Sarr is just out with a minor knock and the club is being cautious.

Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi has named Micky van de Ven as the club's new captain, with Pedro Porro, Ben Davies, James Maddison and Archie Gray completing his leadership group.
Van de Ven will take over the captaincy ahead of the new season, with De Zerbi opting for five players to hold leadership roles within the squad.
"The new captain is Micky van de Ven. Second is Pedro Porro, third Ben Davies, fourth James Maddison and fifth Archie Gray," De Zerbi explained.
The Tottenham boss explained his decision to have five captains, insisting he wants strong leadership throughout the team rather than relying on a single figure.

Micky van de Ven has been appointed Tottenham's new captain, Roberto De Zerbi has confirmed.
The Dutch centre-back, who agreed a new long-term contract earlier this month, replaces Cristian Romero after his move to Atletico Madrid last week.
Van de Ven forms part of a five-player leadership group alongside Pedro Porro, Ben Davies, James Maddison and 20-year-old Archie Gray. Gray could wear the armband at Brentford on Saturday, as Van de Ven and Porro are not ready to start.
De Zerbi said: "The new captain is Micky van de Ven. The second Pedro Porro, the third Ben Davies, the fourth James Maddison and the fifth Archie Gray.
"Why five captains? Just because I want many captains inside of the pitch and to be clear in the position.

Inter Milan have completed the signing of Djed Spence from Tottenham Hotspur, with the defender agreeing a five-year contract with the Serie A champions.
The 26-year-old has joined Inter for a reported fee of around €30 million (£25.6m), bringing his four-year spell in north London to an end. Spence will remain at San Siro until June 2031.
Spence arrived at Tottenham from Middlesbrough in 2022 and went on to make 85 appearances for the club. He played an important role in their Europa League triumph during the 2024-25 campaign, while making 44 appearances across all competitions last season.
His future at Spurs had been uncertain despite manager Roberto De Zerbi previously expressing a desire to keep him. The emergence of Pedro Porro, who recently signed a new contract, alongside the arrival of Andy Robertson from Liverpool, increased competition for places in defence.
Spence has also gained experience outside England, spending time on loan with Rennes, Leeds United and Genoa.

With the 2026 men's World Cup dominating the summer, plenty of Premier League stars took center stage for their countries and dazzled.
But which of them will dominate the Premier League during the 2026-27 season?
Below we take a look at the 10 World Cup stars who are set to light up the Premier League.
Won the World Cup with Spain and was excellent throughout at right back. He will deliver goals and **** ists for Spurs and Roberto De Zerbi will bring out the best in the marauding full back. Porro has finally found the right system and manager for his strengths.
Got his big move to Man City from Nottingham Forest and he will run the show under Enzo Maresca. Few players win the ball back and read the game as well as Anderson, and he was influential in England's third-place finish. The heartbeat of any team he plays in.

We asked you whether Tottenham selling Djed Spence to Inter Milan in a deal worth a minimum £25.6m (30m euros) is a wise decision.
Here are some of your comments:
Alistair: No. Seems mad, he's been developed into an elite attacking full-back to pair with Pedro Porro and now he's going. Destiny Udogie is too injury ***** e. What an odd choice, especially if he wants to stay.
Anthony: I definitely don't think it is wise that my team sell Djed Spence. I have always liked him, he's a good defender and he will only get better and better - keep, keep, keep.

Tottenham Hotspur right-back Djed Spence is reportedly open to joining Liverpool.
Spence is not guaranteed a starting berth at Spurs next season, with Pedro Porro considered the club's first-choice right-back.
The 25-year-old is also unlikely to start at left-back following the signing of Andy Robertson.
Liverpool struggled at right-back last season, with Jeremie Frimpong failing to impress and Conor Bradley missing a significant spell through a knee injury.
Bradley is injury-prone, while it remains to be seen whether Frimpong will recover his best form next season.

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is not part of the 35-man squad travelling for Spurs’ pre-season tour of New Zealand and Australia. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium club are expected to sell the Italian, but he was dropped from Roberto De Zerbi’s squad due to a knock. Spurs confirmed on their website that Vicario sustained a minor knock in training and will undergo treatment at their training centre. Summer signing Martin Dubravka, Brandon Austin and Antonin Kinsky are the goalkeeping options available to De Zerbi on tour.
Tottenham are also without Mohamed Kudus, Xavi Simons, Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odobert. The quartet have stayed behind at Hotspur Way to continue their rehabilitation following knocks from last term. Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, Pedro Porro, Marcos Senesi, Cristian Romero and Djed Spence remain on extended break due to their participation at the just-concluded World Cup. Spurs play Auckland FC and Sydney FC later this month before facing Chelsea next month.
They return to London to take on Getafe and TSG Hoffenheim before starting the 2026-27 Premier League season with a trip to Brentford on August 22nd.

Tottenham Hotspur began their preseason campaign with a win in a behind-closed-doors friendly against League One side MK Dons at the Tottenham Hotspur training ground.
With several players missing due to the recently completed World Cup, a mix of youth and experience was on display as Roberto De Zerbi heavily rotated his side each half. New signings Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali, and Martin Dubravka made their debuts, and it was the former who was the difference, with his stunning strike the lone goal in a scrappy encounter.
Here's my top ten talking points from Spurs' first outing under Thomas Frank.
Spurs' first friendly was as notable for who was missing as much as who was named. With the World Cup only recently wrapping up in the Americas, it was obviously much too soon to see the likes of Djed Spence, Pedro Porro, Marcos Senesi, or Cristian Romero; but other players involved in the World Cup also weren't involved. Jan Paul van Hecke, Micky van de Ven, Kevin Danso, Rodrigo Bentancur, Lucas Bergvall, Pape Sarr, and Andy Robertson were all missing due to enforced leave following their international duties.
This meant limited learnings as to how the squad will shape up when the season kicked off, and also raises questions as to who will be available for the tour to Australia and New Zealand. An additional point of concern was the absence of James Maddison, who had no such international commitments and who made his return from an ACL injury towards the end of last season. The fact he did not see the pitch is concerning given his injury history. It's a similar situation as well for promising young defender Jun'ai Byfield, also missing the end of the season with injury and not sighted today.

Real Madrid also got a share of the glory as Spain won the FIFA World Cup 2026, as one of their players, Marc Cucurella, was also present in the winning side. The Merengue club had signed the fullback just before the start of the top international competition, and he remained a key part of Luis de la Fuente's team throughout the tournament.
Other established Los Blancos stars also had a good World Cup, as they shone for their respective national teams. This is especially true for Kylian Mbappe, who remained the leader of France's attack, and won the Golden Boot with his 10 goals in the competition. Similarly, Jude Bellingham also starred for England, scoring 7 goals for the Three Lions.
As Diario AS has reported, all of these three players have been named in the FIFA World Cup Best XI, a starting lineup of the best players in the competition selected by fans' votes. The full list of players selected is as follows:
Goalkeeper: Vozinha (Cape Verde)
Defenders: Porro (Spain), Lisandro (Argentina), Upamecano (France), Cucurella (Spain)

A trio of players from the first-team ranks at La Liga giants Real Madrid have been afforded places in the official Team of the Tournament for the 2026 World Cup.
The latest edition of the biggest showcase in international football was of course brought to a close this past weekend.
When all was said and done following a summer packed with goals, quality and memorable moments, it was Spain who emerged triumphant courtesy of an extra-time victory over Argentina.
Three members of Luis de la Fuente's squad, in turn, have been named in FIFA's Team of the Tournament, namely Pedro Porro, Rodri, and Real Madrid's Marc Cucurella.
Moving further up the pitch, Blancos standout Jude Bellingham is also recognised for his efforts, with teammate and Golden Boot winner Kylian Mbappé joining Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland in a star-studded front three.

It's been quite a memorable few weeks in the life of Liverpool winger Victor Munoz, and the high point might only be a handful of days away.
Having been called up to the Spain squad for the World Cup despite only making his debut in March, the 23-year-old also joined the Reds from Osasuna, and in four days' time he could be a world champion.

La Roja are one win away from being simultaneous European and world champions after they defeated France 2-0 on Tuesday night, with goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro securing their place in Sunday's final.
If Spain are victorious against Argentina or England next weekend and Munoz gets on the pitch, he'll become just the third man to play in a World Cup final for the eventual champions, matching the feat of Roger Hunt (England in 1966) and Fernando Torres (Spain in 2010).

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has reached its final week, and Spain have now become the first team to book their place in the final.
La Roja beat France 2-0 in Arlington, producing one of the most controlled performances of the knockout stages.
Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute before Pedro Porro added the second in the 58th minute after a clever Dani Olmo pass.
France had enough attacking firepower to make the game interesting, but not enough precision to truly hurt Spain.
From a Real Madrid perspective, it was a night of mixed emotions.

Mike Maignan and Adrien Rabiot's 2026 World Cup journey with France has come to an end at the semi-final stage, as Les Bleus were defeated 2–0 by Spain in Dallas. Maignan played the full 90 minutes, beaten in the first half by an Oyarzabal penalty and in the second by Pedro Porro; Rabiot played 45 minutes before being replaced by Koné at half time. France will still play one more match in the tournament: the third-place playoff against either England or Argentina.

So, in a state with a history of Spanish conquest, history could be repeating itself for Spain. As in Euro 2024, they beat France in a semi-final. As in 2010, they could follow victory in the European Championships by doing the double, by adding a World Cup. Deep in the heart of Texas, Luis de la Fuente's side took a sizeable step towards greatness.
Didier Deschamps had ****** ounced them as the favourites to win the World Cup. It turns out that was not just kidology. As the France manager's epic reign came in effect to an end, it was without a second World Cup or a third consecutive final. Kylian Mbappe may yet go on to become the greatest World Cup goalscorer and player; but not yet, not in Dallas, not now.
Instead, he was outscored on the day by Mikel Oyarzabal, the unheralded striker whose goal decided Euro 2024 and who set Spain towards a still greater triumph. The Real Sociedad captain had an unlikely ally. Pedro Porro, fresh from a Premier League relegation battle with Tottenham, scored a goal to take his side into a World Cup final. But Spain need no reminding that defenders can chip in: their previous World Cup semi-final victory, 16 years ago, came courtesy of Carles Puyol. Watching on, he must have remembered; so, surely, did Sergio Ramos and Xavi, alongside him.
De la Fuente's team are less defined by tiki-taka but they nevertheless prospered by exerting control. They are borrowing from the 2010 formula, global domination secured by reigning European champions who were immune to conceding.
An almost impenetrable defence has been breached only by Belgium's Charles de Ketelaere. France, with their previously fabulous front four, were supposed to provide the stiffest test. But they were not the unstoppable force: not when pitted against the immovable object of the Spanish rearguard. After 35 minutes, France had an xG of 0.01. By the interval, it had crept up to 0.04. The numbers showed how negligible their threat was.

France's dream of a third straight World Cup final is over after a 2-0 loss to Spain in Tuesday's semi-final. Dayot Upamecano played the full 90 minutes in Dallas, while Michael Olise lasted 72 minutes as the Bayern duo were unable to prevent defeat.
Mikel Oyarzabal's penalty put Spain ahead after 22 minutes. Pedro Porro then doubled the advantage just before the hour. France struggled to find their flow in attack and create any meaningful chances.
However, the World Cup isn't over for Les Bleus, who will play the third-place play-off in Miami on Saturday (23:00 CEST) against the loser of Wednesday's second semi-final between England and Argentina.

Spain are within touching distance of glory. Luis de la Fuente's side beat France convincingly 2-0 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington and booked their place in the 2026 World Cup final after a display of character, footballing quality and competitive maturity.
La Roja once again got the better of one of the main favourites for the ******* le in a hugely demanding match. France tried to set the tempo early on, but Spain soon took control of possession and the midfield. Lamine Yamal's pace proved decisive in breaking the deadlock: the winger won a penalty after a challenge from Lucas Digne and Mikel Oyarzabal made no mistake from the spot to put Spain ahead before half-time.
With the advantage on the scoreboard, the Spanish team showedthe composure that has been the hallmark of their whole campaign**.** Rodri and Fabián Ruiz ran the show in the middle of the park, while an impeccably disciplined defence neutralised Mbappé and France's powerful attacking unit. France tried to react after the interval but ran into a consistently solid Spain side, leaving keeper Unai Simón virtually untested.
The decisive blow came in the second half, when Dani Olmo threaded a superb pass into the path of Pedro Porro, who surged forward from full-back with a striker's instinct to beat Mike Maignan and make it 2-0, leaving the reigning World Cup runners-up reeling.
The changes made by Didier Deschamps failed to alter the script. Spain managed their lead intelligently, moved the ball patiently and barely allowed chances to a subdued France, unable to find ******* e against the tactical discipline of De la Fuente's side.

Tottenham's Pedro Porro scored the second goal to seal a 2-0 win and send Spain through to the World Cup final with a convincing semi-final victory over favourites France at Dallas Stadium.
Luis de la Fuente's side blunted a France team brimming with attacking talent, controlled a game of few chances and will deservedly take their place in Sunday's showpiece thanks to goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro.
Oyarzabal opened the scoring from the penalty spot midway through the first half after a lapse from France left-back Lucas Digne resulted in him giving forward Lamine Yamal an unceremonious wallop as he tried to clear the ball.
The spot-kick was confidently thumped into the corner by Oyarzabal and with a lead to defend, Spain's control of the match only grew.
After a below-par first-half, France were expected to come out fighting but it was an increasingly confident Spain who seized the upper hand once more as Porro played a lovely one-two with Dani Olmo before slotting in the second at the near post.

Manchester City midfielder Rodri has been one of the stars of this summer’s World Cup. The Ballon d’Or-winning midfielder has returned to his dominant best and has played a key role in Spain’s progression to the final of the 2026 World Cup. Spain booked their place in the final of the tournament with a dominant 2-0 win over tournament favourites France overnight. Rodri put in a masterful display in midfield to help Spain beat a powerful French outfit. In the process, Rodri’s performance against France was a reminder that Manchester City must extend his contract with the club.
The midfield battle loomed as the decisive factor in Spain’s World Cup semi-final against France. With Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola and Michael Olise starting for France, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Adrien Rabiot started in midfield for Didier Deschamps’ side. In midfield, Spain started Rodri and Fabiàn Ruiz in midfield with Dani Olmo also dropping into midfield.
Simply put, France were overmatched in midfield. A first-half penalty from Mikel Oyarzabal and a second-half strike from Pedro Porro would seal a 2-0 win for Spain. As would an outstanding performance from every Spanish player on the pitch. At the heart of it all was Rodri, who was absolutely brilliant in midfield.
Rodri was at his imperious best in last night’s World Cup semi-final. He dictated the tempo of last night’s match with support from Fabiàn Ruiz and his teammates. Manchester City’s midfield general covered the pitch exceptionally well, routinely snuffing out the threat of the French. Rodri’s ability to read the game and contain any danger was superb. In possession, Rodri was his composed self as the occasion never phased him.
Rodri’s performance last night was reminiscent of his best displays for Manchester City. He has rightly earned the plaudits that his performance deserved. If anything, Rodri’s display was a reminder that he remains by far and away the best number six in world football by some distance.

Lamine Yamal and Spain are through to the finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a highly anticipated semifinal matchup between Spain and France, it was Lamine Yamal’s side who ended up victorious.
Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro netted two goals to give the Spaniards a memorable 2-0 win over the World Cup favorites as the French were unable to find a way to beat Spain’s defense.
The 2-0 win over France marked Spain’s 37th consecutive game where the team either won or drew the game in all competitions.
According to OptaJoe on X, this win has helped the 2010 World Cup champs equal Italy’s unbeaten record from 2018 to 2021.

Spain has been dreadfully boring for most of this World Cup.
At times, there was a lack of urgency. At others, a lack of creativity. However, at no point did the squad lack talent or skill and Luis de la Fuente knew exactly when he needed to let his boys loose.
Against France, Spain followed De La Fuente’s game plan and choked out France’s incredible attacking group. Dominant in the midfield, Spain strangled the imagination from France by not giving Michael Olise an inch to work with — so much so that the Bayern Munich star retreated to the wide areas.
Rodri and Fabián Ruiz were stellar in controlling the tempo of the match and seemingly being in every passing lane that France tried to use.
Aside of taking Olise out of the game, Pau Cubarsi (the best young player of this tournament bar none), Aymeric Laporte, Marc Cucurella, and Pedro Porro made life ******* for Kylian Mbappé, who lost more of his swagger by the minute in the game. Mbappé seemed to get more befuddled by what was going on and seemed to not accept that his team was being beaten…soundly.

France had dazzled at the World Cup but it was to no avail as a semi-final defeat against Spain on Bastille Day means they will miss the desired ***** le and with it a perfect send-off for their departing coach Ddier Deschamps.
A penalty from Mikel Oyarzabal in the 22nd minute and Pedro Porro in the 58th minute clinched a third straight tournament semi-final win for La Roja over Les Bleus, after Euro 2024 and the 2025 Nations League.
Led by eight-time scorer Kylian Mbappé, the France attack which had scored 16 goals on their way into the last four never got rolling but also faced a formidable opponent in the Spanish who have only conceded once at the tournaments.
Mbappé had their first and biggest chance in the 67th minute but his shot was just deflected wide by Marc Cucurella. Désiré Doué hesitated when Spain keeper Unai Simón was out of his goal and the only noteworthy moment of ***** ist king Michael Olie was a rather reckless challenge against Rodri.
For Deschamps, is was a mixture of unusual mistakes by his players and Spain's class.

July 14 (UPI) -- Spain defenders made France's previously potent attack appear pedestrian, shutting out the World Cup favorites Tuesday to advance to the 2026 finale.
Forward Mikel Oyarzabal and defender Pedro Porro found the net in the 2-0 triumph in Arlington, Texas. Spain goalie Unai Simon logged three saves to become the first goalie in World Cup history to secure six clean sheets in the same tournament.
"Today, we were facing the one of the best squads in the world," Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said on the Fox broadcast. "But in front of them, they faced the best team in the world.
"That's the difference. That's a big plus. These players deserve everything."
The top-ranked Spaniards will meet No. 3 Argentina, the defending champions, or No. 4 England in the 2026 World Cup Final at 3 p.m. EDT Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J.

European champions Spain reached the World Cup final with a ruthlessly efficient 2-0 triumph over France on Tuesday and can now dream in earnest of winning the ***** le for a second time.
Mikel Oyarzabal converted a 22nd-minute penalty awarded for a foul by Lucas Digne against Lamine Yamal, and Pedro Porro fired the second in the 58th after a one-two with Dani Olmo.
Yamal thought he had curled a superb third the day after his 19th birthday, only to be marginally offside.
But it didn't matter as La Roja kept a sixth clean sheet in their seventh match of the tournament, in which they have only conceded once, as they all but completely contained France's formidable strike force led by Kylian Mbappé.
It was Spain's third semi-final win in a row over their northern neighbours, having beaten them 2-1 in the same round at Euro 2024 and 5-4 at the 2025 Nations League.
