The Los Angeles Clippers are still reeling in the aftermath of a cap circumvention scandal. For their part in helping Kawhi Leonard secure millions in off-the-court, "no-show" endorsement deals, the franchise had to give up five first-round picks and $30 million, culminating in one of the most severe penalties in NBA history.
Through it all, Kawhi escaped the scandal relatively unscathed. Besides a $700K fine, he didn't face any major consequences, and even his trade to the Toronto Raptors remains completely untouched. And yet, even now, the Clippers have yet to finalize the trade, leading some executives to suspect they are considering some sort of revenge against Leonard for how he's turned his back on the team.
"The Raptors, I'm told, are eager to consummate the trade after initially placing it on hold July 9 (to guard against a Leonard suspension or the outright voiding of his contract) and still firmly believe that the deal will happen as agreed upon and intended. Ditto for Leonard and his camp," wrote NBA insider Marc Stein. "Yet the delay has naturally led some league observers to wonder aloud whether the Clippers are holding off — or considering something even more drastic — to spite Leonard for so readily accepting the league's punishment rather than invoking his right to pursue an appeal. Any formal appeal within the NBA's auspices in such matters, remember, must be initiated by the player in question rather than the team according to league by-laws."
The Clippers have given up everything for Kawhi, and they set themselves back 10 years just to make him happy. From his very arrival, Kawhi was making outlandish requests and even forced the Clippers to give up five first-round picks (along with future MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander) in a deal for Paul George. By the end, the total cost of Leonard's services amounts to 10 first-round picks (not counting SGA), and it was all for a team that never made the Finals.
So when the Clippers were caught holding the bag in the cap circumvention scandal, they naturally expected some level of cooperation from Leonard, someone they moved heaven and earth to appease. Instead, he settled with the NBA right away, avoiding more severe penalties while stripping the Clippers of any power to fight back.

Surrounding yourself with a bunch of yes-men is not a recipe for success—at least according to AT&T CEO John Stankey. Instead, he wants employees to come to meetings prepared to share their ideas and perspectives—not simply sit back and listen.
"I love discourse," Stankey said in a recent joint interview with JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon hosted by LinkedIn. The telecommunications executive added that one of the principles in his company's cultural documents is to not show up to meetings without having done your homework.
"Don't walk in there and just be an observer," Stankey said. "When you have a point of view, it shouldn't just be some uninformed opinion. It should be a point of view that's built on facts, information, and data. I crave that."
If employees aren't willing to speak up—or don't have a constructive point to make—Stankey suggested there may not be the right people in the room.
Dimon has similarly emphasized the importance of making sure meetings are both necessary and productive. Leaders should create an environment where employees aren't afraid to disagree or raise uncomfortable issues in meetings—even if that means putting the proverbial "dead cat on the table," he said.

FLATWOODS, Ky. — Coming into a big-time girls soccer matchup, the Wheelersburg Pirates' and Russell Red Devils' girls soccer programs already had high respect levels from their peers that were well-earned, and well-deserved.
But prior to this particular matchup, Russell, who was ranked 59th nationally among all girls soccer programs in the entire United States, had all the pub.
However, the Lady Devils, who entered the match with a 6-0 overall record, weren't the better team on Thursday evening.
Wheelersburg continued to show onlookers and observers why a potential program history making postseason run could certainly be in the cards, as the Lady Pirates knocked the Lady Devils off the perch of the unbeaten in an impressive 3-1 road win at the Russell Soccer Complex in Flatwoods, Ky.
The win elevated Jon Estep's girls team to a perfect 6-0 — and an unblemished 4-0 on the road to begin 2026.

The transfer window slammed shut last night, but there are always a few late deals that only get announced the following morning. Unfortunately, a new midfielder is not one of those despite some speculation today about veteran free agent Georginio Wijnaldum.
The three confirmed moves are loans for Academy standouts Landon Emenalo, 18, Shim Mheuka, 18, and Kiano Dyer, 19 — the two 18-year-olds both going to Celtic in Scotland and Dyer joining League Two side Chesterfield FC. Dyer and Mheuka already have at least one senior appearance to their name while Emenalo (son of our former sporting director Michael Emenalo) was with the first-team on our preseason tour this summer and caught the eye of many observers.
It's certainly a bold move for both Emenalo and Mheuka to be joining the Scottish champions, where they will be competing for minutes against seasoned internationals like former ****** nal left back Kieran Tierney or Denmark striker Kasper Høgh. Celtic manager Martin O'Neill spoke highly of the two teenagers upon their arrival, but we'll just have to wait and see how that translates to minutes at the top level.

It doesn't take an advanced football mind to see that Deshaun Watson hasn't been a good starting quarterback since the Cleveland Browns acquired him.
It isn't the job of observers to fix Watson though. That is Browns head coach Todd Monken's job, especially since he named Watson his starting quarterback for the regular season.
And you'd think that the man in charge of the coaching staff that is now in charge of reviving Watson's career would watch a lot of tape to diagnose what has gone wrong since Watson joined the Browns in 2022. You'd be wrong.
Monken, who has been refreshingly honest with the media since becoming Browns coach, made a pretty startling confession on Tuesday: He has not watched any of Watson's old Browns games since becoming coach. His reasoning is very cheery, but we'll see if it works out.
Monken was asked about Watson's previous tape with the Browns, and he had a curveball for an answer.

DAYTONA BEACH — As an observer, Austin Cindric enjoyed watching Ryan Preece punch his own ticket into NASCAR's Cup Series playoffs. That doesn't mean it came without a little bit of stress, and a lot of communication, before the two-lap overtime period began.
Cindric had all the information he needed as it pertained to fuel and, more importantly, how it pertained to points. He held on for a sixth-place **** e Zero Sugar 400 finish at Daytona International Speedway, good enough to secure one of the final spots into the 16-driver postseason field.
"I know it might sound weird, but it was kind of fun to watch," Cindric said of Preece's victory. "The guy drove a **** of a race, and wins because of it. That doesn't happen at these (events) super often."

Now that the Philadelphia Eagles' preseason schedule is over, the team's focus shifts to cutting their roster down to the regular season 53-player limit before the 6:00 PM Eastern deadline on Sunday, August 30. Here's our best effort at projecting what the INITIAL roster is going to look like. The Birds will likely make some tweaks (injured reserve placements, trades, waiver claims, etc.) before they actually play the Washington Commanders in Week 1. Note that this activity is about predicting what the Eagles WILL do as opposed to what we necessarily think they should do.

Hurts threw a lot of interceptions this summer, yes, but I challenge you to find a daily practice observer who feels like he had a bad camp. On the whole, the good outweighed the bad. It seems like he's embracing the new offensive direction. The Eagles are hoping Hurts doesn't get, well, hurt … because the depth behind him is very uninspiring. There was no clear winner from the Eagles' training camp backup quarterback battle. McKee somehow looked worse than ever after previously showing encouraging signs in previous years. Dalton looks somewhat physically diminished, which tracks for a quarterback entering his age 39 season. Maybe he gets traded … but what price is he even fetching at this point? I wonder if the Eagles might trade both Dalton (for very meager draft pick compensation) AND McKee (included in a deal for another team's quarterback, such as Anthony Richardson or J.J. McCarthy)? Payton has shown some promise but the Eagles didn't really do a good job of getting him more action in the preseason. Utilizing him on special teams in the final preseason game points to them trying to find a role for him. This is a tough position to figure out.

The Dallas Cowboys probably didn't have enough room on the roster for third-year pro Marist Liufau. The 2024 third rounder was moved from off-ball linebacker to edge rusher this offseason, but he's behind a long list of guys there, especially after the signing of future Hall of Famer Von Miller. Liufau began working back with the inside backers in the last week or so of practice, but seems behind the eight ball there as well.

Wyoming's Republican Gov. Mark Gordon voiced concerns about the Justice Department election monitors who observed the primary election in his state last week, saying he's asked his attorney general to look into their "aggressive" behavior.
The Justice Department sent two Civil Rights Division attorneys to Laramie County, Wyoming, which includes the state capital of Cheyenne. But some officials, including the state attorney general, weren't made aware of the move in advance, Gordon said at a state canvassing board meeting Wednesday.
"It sounded like the behavior of the observers was a bit aggressive," Gordon said, adding, "It just was irregular and, and I have asked the attorney general to start looking into … the nature of the visits and all that sort of stuff."
The DOJ, when reached for comment, pointed CNN to an August 18 statement from Wyoming US Attorney Darin Smith: "Voters deserve absolute confidence that their ballots are secure and their voices are heard without interference…. We are working alongside local officials to ensure every lawful vote is protected."
CNN has reached out to the governor's office for comment.

Duke football has named its starting quarterback for the 2026 season.
Walker Eget was named as the Blue Devils' starter on Tuesday, Aug. 25. The sixth-year San José State transfer won the starting job over redshirt freshman Dan Mahan.
ESPN's Pete Thamel was first to report the news, with a source confirming it to the Fayetteville Observer.
Eget brings two years of starting experience after five seasons at San José State. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound signal-caller out of Santa Clarita, California, threw for 5,563 yards and 30 touchdowns in 18 starts. Could UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski retire after his next fight? It depends.
Volkanovski is set to defend his ******* le against Movsar Evloev in the main event of UFC 333 (Paramount+) on Oct. 24 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. With roughly two months until the fight, Volkanovski, who turns 38 on Sept. 29, is open about the fact that retirement is a possibility.

There will be a work stoppage following the completion of the World Series once the current Collective Bargaining Agreement expires, most likely through an owner's lockout of the players that will last for months. Someone needed to step up when the New Orleans Saints shut down Jordyn Tyson for the preseason with another hamstring injury. More than a few observers at one of BYU's preseason training camp practices last week had to scramble to find their rosters after a defensive back picked off a ball intended for receiver Reggie Frischknecht.
Who's No. 15?
That would be cornerback Jayven Williams, a transfer from Mobile, Alabama, by way of Kennesaw State and the SEC's Mississippi State who, surprisingly to some, chose BYU for his final season of college football eligibility. Williams, 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds, has turned some heads in camp with his playmaking ability and outstanding speed.
Returning starters Tre Alexander and Evan "Shmev" Johnson seemingly have the starting cornerback spots locked up, but keep an eye on Williams as a guy who could see considerable playing time in the secondary.
Redshirt junior Kevin Doe and redshirt freshman Jordyn Criss are also in the mix, said new BYU cornerbacks coach Lewis Walker after spring camp. Sophomore Jonathan Kabeya is still in the rehab process as the Cougars look to replace Mory Bamba, now a member of the New York Jets.

Duke Football is close to opening up their season as the defending ACC champions. What's in store for them? On Episode 840, we speak with Anna Snyder of the Fayetteville Observer on where the football team is at as they finish out the preseason.
The biggest question facing the Blue Devils this season: who will start at QB? All signs point to either transfer Walker Eget or sophomore Dan Mahan. Whoever is under center, they will have Nate Sheppard to hand the ball to and Jeremiah Hasley to throw the ball downfield to as they try to put points on the board. Anna takes us through the offense and defense and speaks to what qualities will be the calling card for Duke this season as they seek to defend their ******* le against all doubters.
We also dip a bit into the basketball, asking Anna about the summer and which players have been the ones to stand out in practice. We also see which non-conference games have her the most excited about the season as Duke hopes to add to their banner collection atop Cameron Indoor Stadium.
We end the show with an update on Mike Corey's recovery from a tragic car accident that claimed the life of his son, Teddy. Mike physically is doing much better and appreciates all the well-wishes. Emotionally, that toll will take a bit longer for him and his family to process. A memorial fund has been established in Teddy's honor, and we encourage everyone to share it widely and pay tribute to Teddy's life that was taken far too soon.
