A $200,000 sale of MSFT held since 1995 generates a large capital gain that Section 213 nursing home deductions can largely erase on the same return.
Selling Dad's stock and paying his care costs must land on the same tax return; splitting them across two returns eliminates the deduction entirely.
Stock held since 1995 qualifies for a stepped-up basis at death, wiping the gain tax-free for heirs. Selling it makes sense only when Section 213 fully covers the cost.
Read More: Learn 7 secret wealth tips high net worth investors use that most investors miss (sponsor)
If your parent entered a nursing home this year and you sold a long-held stock position to cover the bills, Internal Revenue Code section 213 can quietly absorb most or all of the capital gain. A family can sell $200,000 of Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) stock held since 1995, realize a large embedded gain, and end the year owing surprisingly little federal tax. The same fact pattern, structured slightly wrong, produces a full tax bill with no offset.

In July, Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Satya Nadella surprised AI stock investors with an uncomfortable way to think about what they were buying into.
As I wrote for TheStreet in "Microsoft CEO adds fuel to Palantir CEO's AI warning," Nadella argued that companies weren't merely paying for tokens. Moreover, they were feeding outside models the prompts, corrections, and institutional knowledge that eventually make those systems useful for their users.
"You essentially pay for intelligence twice, once with money, and again with something even more valuable," Nadella wrote in his July essay.
Days later, that warning became a central part of Palantir's bull case. Now, two months on, Palantir and Nvidia, two of the biggest names in the AI ******* e, are starting to act on it.
Palantir CEO Alex Karp pushed the argument further, which I covered in "Palantir CEO escalates Microsoft's AI warning."

MSFT's new government AI suite goes on sale October 1, but agencies must commit annual budgets before all features clear security accreditation.
Microsoft hasn't disclosed per-seat pricing or paid conversion rates from earlier no-cost federal Copilot deployments, making any government revenue forecast impossible.

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) has told federal buyers that a new top government tier of its productivity suite, plus a companion agent-management product, will be available for Government Community Cloud customers to purchase on October 1. Individual capabilities will light up in phases as each workload clears its required government security accreditation, and additional Copilot features are slated for the months after general availability.

I keep adding to my position in Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) because the loudest bear case, that AI would gut Google Search and hollow out the ad engine, keeps getting louder while the numbers keep going the other way. The skeptics said generative AI would strip clicks out of the funnel. Instead, AI is actively boosting the advertising business, and my cost basis has been rising alongside the buy ***** on.

AI data centers are facing growing power constraints, and the issue is becoming increasingly urgent. New utility capacity can take years to develop and bring online, but hyperscalers cannot afford to wait that long to support their growing computing needs. That gap between supply and demand creates an opportunity for Bloom Energy (BE), which is focused on delivering power where and when hyperscalers like Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN), and Alphabet (GOOG) (GOOGL) require it. The fundamentals are now starting to provide support for the growing optimism around its opportunity.
Bloom Energy's technology stands out because it can address the AI power challenge on a much shorter timeline. The company's solid-oxide fuel cells are manufactured in factories and can be moved where required. They can also be deployed much faster than traditional power infrastructure. Instead of waiting years for grid upgrades or additional turbine capacity, data center developers can install Bloom Energy's systems and bring power online in a much shorter timeframe. As AI infrastructure expands, that speed has helped the company establish itself as an increasingly important on-site power vendor. All major U.S. hyperscalers are also providing validation of its position.

Software stocks, once left in the dust, have bounced back in recent months as high-flying chip stocks take a back seat.
"One of the things that was greatly overstated earlier this year was the death of software," Brian Mulberry, Zacks Investment Management chief market strategist, told Yahoo Finance on Tuesday.
"In order to engage with these AI tools … you need software to customize those tools for your business, " he said.
The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) is up 15% over the past three months and more than 40% higher from its April lows. Among individual movers, Microsoft (MSFT) and Palantir (PLTR) are both up 30%, while Salesforce (CRM) has risen more than 50% since mid-June.
In comparison, the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) is down 17% over the three-month period, according to Yahoo Finance's AlphaSpace chart.

After holding Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) for more than 10 years, I wouldn't sell a single share, not even today. The company I bought back in 2016 has changed dramatically, but mostly in ways that strengthen the original reason I owned it. Microsoft has shifted from a PC-centric software business to one built on cloud, subscriptions, enterprise software, and artificial intelligence.
So the question now is whether those changes can support another decade of compounding, and whether the stock is still a buy at today's valuation.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
When I first bought Microsoft, the business was much smaller. In fiscal 2016, it generated $85.3 billion in revenue and $20.2 billion in operating income. By fiscal 2026, revenue had reached $331.8 billion and operating income $155.2 billion. Azure alone passed $100 billion in annual revenue.
The bigger change is where that growth came from. Microsoft expanded Microsoft 365, Azure, LinkedIn, Dynamics, GitHub, security, and other cloud products across largely the same enterprise customer base.

On a recent Earn Your Leisure episode, hosts Troy Millings and Rashaad Bilal split openly on where the next dollar of AI value accrues. Millings argued for names outside the Magnificent 7 and made Broadcom's custom accelerator business the centerpiece of the case. Bilal countered that "you have to go with the people who are on the leaderboard," naming Taiwan Semiconductor (NYSE:TSM), Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), Micron (NASDAQ:MU), Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG, NASDAQ:GOOGL), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), and the Nasdaq 100.
I find Millings the more persuasive of the two. Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) posted AI semiconductor revenue of $16.7 billion in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, up 221% year over year, and guided the fourth quarter to $21.7 billion, up 236%. On the earnings call, Hock Tan sketched a trajectory to roughly $115 billion in fiscal 2027 and $230 billion in fiscal 2028.

During the September 3 episode of Mad Money, Jim Cramer mentioned Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) for its unconventional approach to powering hyperscale data centers in partnership with Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX). He said:
How about Microsoft? Look, Mr. Softee is getting religion. They've realized that by giving us more disclosure on Azure, their cloud infrastructure business, we'll find more things to like. They're right. In the end, I come to praise Microsoft CFO Amy Hood, not bury her. They've been very clever getting power for the data centers, pumping it right out of the Permian. They got this deal with Chevron as a partner… 2.67 gigawatts. No one's talking about it. It's the cleanest behind the meter plan for power I have seen yet. People even, and this is not a stretch, I'm not kidding, people even like Copilot.
CFO Amy Hood provided Wall Street with a much clearer look at actual cloud demand by breaking down detailed Azure growth metrics and data center capacity constraints. At the same time, enterprise adoption of Microsoft 365 Copilot is moving past initial trials, with major corporations deploying the AI ***** istant across workforce segments.
A major highlight of the company's infrastructure strategy is a twenty-year agreement with Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) for a proposed 2.67-gigawatt natural gas power plant in West Texas. Designed to supply dedicated off-grid electricity directly to a hyperscale data center in the Permian Basin, the project bypasses regional grid transmission queues to secure reliable power for continuous AI workloads. Microsoft Corporation's (NASDAQ:MSFT) president of Cloud Operations + Innovation, Noelle Walsh, commented:
Our agreement with Chevron helps ensure we'll have dedicated, large-scale power to support the evolution and reliability of advanced compute. Through this partnership, we're delighted to grow with and become a deeper part of the West Texas community.

An AI-hungry Google (GOOG, GOOGL) isn't playing nice with one of the largest content publishers on the internet.
"Here's the truth. For a long time, we had a deal with Google, an unwritten deal, which was 'you can use our content to build your search product, and in return, we get sessions,'" People Inc. (PPLI) CEO Neil Vogel told Yahoo Finance from the Goldman Sachs Communacopia & Tech Conference (video above). "Now the search product has turned into an AI product by and large, and they still use our content to train their AI, both in real time and in a training way — we don't have to get into the AI terminology of it — but now they don't share anything with us."
Google's push into AI-powered summaries has upended search traffic for publishers. Many fear the situation will get worse, triggering more sweeping cost cuts among many players in 2026.
Vogel said the company has signed content licensing deals with Microsoft (MSFT), Meta (META), and OpenAI (OPAI.PVT). Ideally, he would also like to ink one with Google.
He stopped short of saying he would turn off Google from crawling People's content.

Now the shine is on CrowdStrike Holdings (CRWD), the cybersecurity company known for its cloud-native platform for endpoint security. At CrowdStrike's recent Fal.Con 2026 conference in Las Vegas, Huang said that CrowdStrike is Nvidia's top security partner.

September S&P 500 E-Mini futures (ESU26) are down -0.15%, and September Nasdaq 100 E-Mini futures (NQU26) are down -0.66% this morning as rising oil prices and bond yields weigh on investor sentiment ahead of crucial U.S. producer inflation data and earnings from debt-loaded AI hyperscaler Oracle.
Oil prices extended their advance on Thursday as escalating attacks between the U.S. and Iran risked prolonging disruptions to energy flows in the Middle East. Brent crude rose above $103 a barrel, while WTI crude climbed above $99 a barrel. A senior Iranian official said on Wednesday that Tehran has no plans to back down in the face of an American naval blockade and will intensify its strikes if the U.S. continues attacking its territory. Microsoft (MSFT) is coming off the most profitable stretch it has posted in years, and its stock trades at $493.95, about 92% of its 52-week high. Nothing here is broken. The risk is quieter than that. The spending that came with those margins is still climbing, and the company has already told shareholders what it expects that to do to fiscal 2027.
Net margin over the trailing twelve months is 40.3%, the highest in at least five years and well above a 36.8% three-year average. Operating margin runs 46.8% against a 45.3% three-year average, near the top of its multi-year range. Revenue of $331.8 billion grew 17.8% year over year, so none of this came from a shrinking business.
Margins at a peak rarely stay there. This peak arrives with a specific and growing bill, and that bill is the Azure build-out.
Azure revenue grew 43% in fiscal Q4 2026, and management says customer demand still exceeds available capacity. Company-wide, the build-out took $41 billion of capital expenditure in that one quarter (including equipment acquired under leases), roughly two-thirds of it on what management calls short-lived **** ets, primarily CPUs and GPUs. Against $55.4 billion in cash from operations, cash actually paid for property and equipment was $35.8 billion, yielding $19.6 billion in free cash flow.
The bill is already visible in the margin. The company's gross margin was 67% in fiscal Q4 2026, down year over year, and management attributes the decline to the sales mix shift toward Azure and the AI infrastructure spending behind it, offset only partly by efficiency gains. Capital expenditure is guided higher again in fiscal 2027.
