Ryan Day worked under Urban Meyer for four seasons -- including three as a full-time ****** istant. After taking over as the head coach at Ohio State, he took those lessons and the mentorship of Meyer with him. But recently, he's leaning on a key piece of advice when replacing members of his coaching staff.
Day has had to replace his offensive coordinator in each of the last three seasons, and that coincided this year with losing one of the top recruiters on his roster: Brian Hartline. Hartline, who served as Ohio State's offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach last season, left to take the head coaching position with USF this offseason.
So what did Day do? He remembered what Meyer told him years ago.
"When you're at Ohio State you get to go hire the best," Ryan Day said on The Pat McAfee Show. "I remember one of my first recruiting meetings, I was the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator and Urban Meyer was the head coach here. And we walked in, and the recruit and the family says, 'Well, we really like coach Day, but what happens if he leaves?' I thought coach was going to say, 'He's going to be here for a long time, you don't need to worry about that.' He just said, 'We'll just go get the next best guy out there.'"
Day went out and added Cortez Hankton as the wide receivers coach and Arthur Smith as the OC.

Given the likelihood that they will face stiff opposition in Europe, Sissako will be even more crucial.

In theory, a starting spot in the top 10 of the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll should bode well for a team's chances of concluding the season in the 12-team College Football Playoff. In practice, however, that's anything but a guarantee.
Though the expansion to 12 is still fairly recent, we need look no further than last year to see just how speculative preseason rankings can be. Of the preseason top 10 in 2025, fully half did not wind up making the playoff. That list includes preseason No. 1 Texas, as well as notable name-brand programs like Penn State, Notre Dame, Clemson and LSU.
So what could trip up this year's top 10? To be sure, they all benefit from a lofty starting point, but all will face plenty of challenges over the long fall where things could go very right or terribly wrong. Here's a look at the keys for each of the top 10 teams hoping to carve a path to the playoff.

Nine SEC teams are ranked in the Top 25, more than any other conference. That includes six teams in the top 11.

The defense retains four of its top six tacklers and there's not much of a scheme turnover with former head coach Brent Pry staying on as the coordinator. The schedule is manageable too. The Hokies should go undefeated in September before a home game against Pitt and a cross-country trip to Cal.

Jamestown, which is the hometown of Lucille Ball, will be abuzz with laughs as the center hosts the annual Lucille Ball Comedy Festival Aug. 7-9, headlined by Jerry Seinfeld, Bert Kreischer and Seth Meyers.
Gunderson has been the driving force behind the nonprofit National Comedy Center for 15 years. She joined what was then the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum in Jamestown in 2011. Defense wins championships, and often that is because of a strong foundation along the line of scrimmage. The front seven is key to stopping the run and putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks. If a defense can win against the run without devoting extra numbers to pass coverage, that can throw offenses through a loop.
The Oregon Ducks have proven they can stop the run and get after the passer, and this season should be more of the same. A veteran group, led by Matayo Uiagalelei and Teitum Tuioti, will guide the Ducks along the line of scrimmage, turning runs inside to Bear Alexander and A'Mauri Washington while making quarterbacks uncomfortable on dropbacks.
CBS Sports' Blake Brockermeyer tabbed Oregon's front seven as the third-best in the country, trailing only Oklahoma and Miami. Not only do the Ducks have experienced talent up front, but they have plenty of depth as well, including Nasir Wyatt on the edge and North Carolina transfer D'Antre Robinson on the interior.
"The Ducks return the best defensive line in the country, led by returning interior starters Bear Alexander and A'Mauri Washington," Brockermeyer wrote. "Both rank among the nation's best run defenders and have steadily improved as pass rushers. They possess the power and knock-back ability to physically dominate opponents."
While Oregon is loaded with talent along the defensive line, the linebacker room still has some questions. Jerry Mixon takes over as the leader after a breakout season in 2025 behind leading tackler Bryce Boettcher. Now that Boettcher is off to the NFL, Mixon will lead the room.

Nebraska coach Matt Rhule represented the Huskers on Thursday at Big Ten Football Media Days in Chicago. Rhule was joined by Justin Evans, Luke Lindenmeyer and Andrew Marshall.
Rhule is entering his fourth season as the head coach of the Cornhuskers. He is 19-19 in the last three seasons and is coming off a 7-6 campaign in 2025.
Evans started in all 13 games and did not allow a sack last season. He has been graded by PFF College as the top returning center in college football.
Lindenmeyer had a productive season for the offense last year. He recorded 29 catches for 312 yards and two touchdowns last season.
Marshall recorded 45 tackles, 4.0 TFL, an interception, and four pass breakups in 2025. He was an honorable-mention All-Big Ten selection.

How will the Jon Sumrall era live on in Florida football history? With about a month to go before the Gators kick off the 2026 season, the biggest hope for now is that it's at least an improvement over the Billy Napier one.
The plug got pulled on Napier seven games into his fourth season, a barrier that no UF coach has crossed since Urban Meyer. The Gators haven't been in the College Football Playoff rankings since Dan Mullen coached them to the 2020 SEC championship game.
To turn that around, maybe a coach freshly removed from leading Tulane to the CFP will help. He knows he's got a stud at running back in Jadan Baugh, he of 1,170 yards and eight touchdowns in what was otherwise a dismal 4-8 campaign. Who starts at quarterback is a whole different manner: Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo is one of six transfers projected as starters at Ourlads, but redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr. could just as easily win the job.
There's still time to decide who best fits in new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner's Air Raid scheme. The first two games of the season will (barring disaster the likes of the South Florida loss last season) serve as mere tune-ups for the SEC opener at Auburn and former USF two-way QB Byrum Brown. Then it's the big early test: a showdown with Trinidad Chambliss, Kewan Lacy and an Ole Miss team fresh off a CFP semifinal appearance.
If the Gators can tread water through the gauntlet of Texas, Georgia (in Atlanta as Jacksonville updates its stadium) and Oklahoma, there's hope they could lock down a solid bowl résumé against Florida State on Black Friday. And hey, maybe UF can end the year back in the CFP rankings.

Nearly five months ago, Meyer-Shipp replaced Rod Graves as executive director of the Fritz Pollard Alliance (FPA), an independent organization that promotes and monitors minority hiring for head coaching roles and other high-level positions in the NFL.
Yeah, that NFL. The one where Black coaches were 1-for-18 in landing the top jobs over the past two hiring cycles. The one that is a defendant, along with several teams, in a class-action lawsuit brought forth by Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores and two former coaches alleging racial discrimination. The one under attack from the Florida attorney general, aiming to wipe out the Rooney Rule, which ties so closely to the FPA's mission.
The challenges for Meyer-Shipp come from multiple directions, with multiple layers, against the political winds of the anti-DEI movement pushed by the highest levels of government.

Georgia will face a handful of tough opponents at Sanford Stadium this fall. The Bulldogs first true test of the season will be against the Oklahoma Sooners in Athens, followed by a highly anticipated matchup against the Vanderbilt Commodores. The Dawgs are set to face the Auburn Tigers and the Missouri Tigers at Sanford Stadium during SEC play as well, and Georgia will use the atmosphere to their advantage.
The Bulldogs have lost just one home game dating back to 2019. Georgia had a 33-game home winning streak snapped against the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2025, but UGA rebounded with ranked home wins over Ole Miss and Texas.

Coker has only made it to 11 games in each of his two NFL seasons. Health has been an issue but he's made strides to get his body right. Last season, ****** er had 33 catches for 394 yards and three scores. While the regular season was uninspiring from a fantasy standpoint, the ****** ysts point out the playoff game vs. the Rams. ****** er had a 9-134-1 line on 12 targets against Los Angeles in the Panthers' near upset win.

Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. would like to put the 2025 season in the rearview mirror.
Thomas had 87 catches for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns after being drafted in the first round in 2024, but his second season halted all talk of him jumping right to the top of the list of NFL wideouts. Thomas caught less than half of the ****** thrown his way and he was credited with 10 drops en route to 48 catches for 707 yards and two touchdowns.
The drop in production led to trade chatter this offseason, but the Jaguars were quick to shut it down and call Thomas a big part of their plans for 2026. That talk and other doubts about his upside still found their way to Thomas and he credits a conversation with his father for putting him in the right mindset to bounce back.
"We heard everything that was going on, all that, but he just told me, 'Come out here and be undeniable,'" Thomas said, via Mark Lane of the ****** ociated Press. "That's just something I live by every day. I want to be undeniable."
Jakobi Meyers and Parker Washington stepped up as the team's most reliable wideouts during a 13-4 season, so Jacksonville has a full deck of options in the passing game. They'd still like to see Thomas get back to something close to that undeniable rookie form as they try to defend their division ****** le this fall.

The 2026 Shriners Children's East-West Bowl released its watch list on Thursday. The list contains six returning Huskers and five Nebraska transfers.
Returning Huskers to make the list included wide receiver Nyziah Hunter, tight end Luke Lindenmeyer, edge rusher Williams Nwaneri, defensive back Andrew Marshall, and offensive linemen Justin Evans and Elijah Pritchett. Transfers include quarterback Anthony Colandrea, edge rusher Anthony Jones Jr., defensive back Dwayne McDougle III and offensive linemen Brendan Black and Paul Mubenga.
Colandrea is the standout, playing in 33 games in his career with 31 starts at quarterback. The 2025 Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year across three seasons completed 627-of-983 passes for 7,542 yards and 49 touchdowns. He also had 328 carries for 1,151 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Jones Jr. played one season each at Oregon, Indiana, Michigan State and UCLA before transferring to Nebraska. Jones has played in 37 games, totaling 58 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and one pass breakup. McDougle III followed new defensive coordinator Rob Aurich from San Diego State.
McDougle III played in 40 games across four seasons and recorded 143 tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss, six interceptions, 12 pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Black and Mubenga combined for 56 games and 41 starts. Black played in 36 games across three seasons at Iowa State. Mubenga also played for three seasons, taking part in 20 games at LSU.

At the outset I have to admit that I am going to break one of my rules. I am including Jake Meyers and Taylor Trammel even though they do not qualify under the 120 out rule. I am doing it for two reasons. First, Meyers comes very close with 114 outs, so sometimes that 120 designation can feel rather arbitrary. More importantly, it gives us a total picture of the center field position. When we include Brice Matthews we get a total picture of the Astros side of things and it gives us 16 center fielders to profile instead of 14. The bigger the sample size the better the data.
The number one thing we have noticed throughout this series is that each position stands on its own and center field is no different. The big league average for bases per out was .676 before the break, but every position has come in above or below that mark. So, before we make any declarative statements about the Astros and center field we need to take the position norm into account.
However, the distribution of outs demonstrates opportunity. Generally speaking, you want the best players getting the most opportunities. When that doesn’t happen, that is an example of inefficiency. Naturally, if this were a commentary piece then we could attribute blame on one person or another. Since it isn’t, we can chalk it up to an organizational failure and simply highlight that. In a close division and wild card race, organizational failures like that are magnified.
This is a reminder that bases per out are calculated by adding total bases, walks, stolen bases, and hit by pitches and dividing that sum by total outs. All of the components are available on baseball-reference.com, but it is not a recognized stat yet. I suppose we can say we are on the ground floor of a movement, but I did not invent the stat. It just hasn’t caught on yet.

In a recent report, Sky Sports stated that Liverpool have launched a move for Monaco playmaker Maghnes Akliouche. It has been mentioned that the Reds are facing competition from Paris Saint-Germain in the race to land the France international this off-season.
Akliouche enjoyed a good run of form at the French club after he produced a run of impressive displays for them in the final third. The 24-year-old registered seven goals and earned 11 **** ists in 43 matches for Monaco last season across all fronts.
The French talent is currently among the best wide players in Ligue 1. Hence, it is no surprise that the Reds are hoping to get a deal done for him later this year.

The 2026 World Cup took the country by storm over the past six weeks, with Spain taking the ****** le over the weekend by beating the reigning champions, Argentina. Celebrities of all statures were on hand to take in the final, including former Colorado Buffaloes star Travis Hunter.
Hunter was filmed entering New York-New Jersey Stadium (MetLife Stadium) donning a clean No. 10 Lionel Messi jersey. While Hunter might have gone home disappointed with Argentina's loss, he had his typical smile on his face before the game, vibing to the pregame sounds.
The Jacksonville Jaguars star is entering his second year in the NFL after being the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. His rookie season was disappointing overall after it ended with knee surgery following Week 7. Playing both wide receiver and cornerback full time, Hunter seemed to be hitting his stride in the game the injury happened, as he racked up eight receptions for 101 yards and caught his first NFL touchdown.
In 2025, Hunter finished with 28 receptions for 298 yards and one touchdown on offense, along with 15 combined tackles and three passes defended. After recovering from his injury, he bulked up this offseason, hoping to be better prepared for the physicality of the NFL and, specifically, to play both offense and defense.
The Jaguars have a loaded wide receiver room, with Hunter seemingly behind starters Brian Thomas Jr. and Parker Washington and competing with Jakobi Meyers for third-receiver reps. On defense, Hunter is listed as a starting cornerback alongside Montaric Brown.

PHILADELPHIA – For the better part of 90 minutes Tuesday, July 14, Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred and MLB Players' ****** ociation interim executive director Bruce Meyer laid out their alternative visions of reality, staking out opposite poles on a salary cap, revenue sharing, and perhaps the color of the sky as the sport grinds toward a Dec. 1 owners' lockout.
Yet there's one subject in which they were in full agreement: If sports gambling and prediction markets are legal, they most certainly should get a piece of it.
Meyer, in his first major press briefing since Tony Clark's February resignation, acknowledged that widespread legalized sports betting has created "an environment where our players are subject to constant threats, harassment. Always has been, but I think the players will probably say it's reached a new low."
Yet in late April, the MLBPA struck a long-term licensing agreement with Hard Rock Bet, which it said integrates "MLB player name, image, and likeness directly into the core of the betting experience across Hard Rock Bet's digital and retail platforms throughout North America."
That would seem to put the union at odds with one of its core principles, protecting player safety and welfare. Yet both league and union have adopted a mindset that could also serve as the ****** les of a '90s album: Everybody else is doing it, so why can't we?

PHILADELPHIA — Baseball’s uncertain future briefly hung over the otherwise grandiose MLB All-Star festivities on Tuesday morning as the league’s commissioner and the head of its players union detailed the divide over a potential salary cap.
A significant gap remains between the MLB owners, who are fighting to impose a cap once the current collective bargaining agreement expires in December, and the MLB Players **** ociation, which staunchly rejects one.
MLB recently began airing “Level the Field” ads to promote public support for a cap, which interim MLBPA head Bruce Meyer took issue with.
“I have watched, over the last few years, the owners, the commissioner’s office, try to convince fans, the consumers of their product, that the product is broken,” Meyer said in downtown Philadelphia, not far from Citizens Bank Park, the site of Tuesday night’s All-Star Game.
“The supposed stewards of the game have spent an inordinate amount of time trying to convince those same fans that they don’t have hope, or they shouldn’t have hope, or that the product that they’re paying to consume in record numbers is somehow broken. I think it’s perverse.”

Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas and Georgia lead the pack, with LSU rounding out the top five. Elite recruiting, a celebrated NFL talent pipeline, and sustained winning have become a benchmark for each of these teams. The second tier features Tennessee at No. 6 and Florida at No. 7, followed by Auburn, Texas A&M and Ole Miss.
The Gators enter 2026 in flux, with a totally revamped roster, two new lead coordinators, and an undecided quarterback competition. Combine those challenges with a 4-8 record from last season, and the reasons for pessimism are apparent. Under Billy Napier, the program was talented but wildly inconsistent — Gator Nation hopes that a renewed identity under Sumrall will help propel this once-proud program forward.
