The dust has settled, and the hard trade deadline is over. There were some big trades this year. There were some notable non-trades this year, too—we'll get to that, later. Kansas City was quiet, though, with only a handful of deals completed.
Let's grade the ones that they did, and one that they didn't do.
Grade: B+
Lane Thomas probably knew when he signed with Kansas City that he'd either make the playoffs with the team or end the year playing for someone else. Bailey Falter has probably wished he was somewhere else for a while, as did the Royals front office at this point. By trading them to the Braves, the Royals enacted their most impactful trade of the deadline.
The key player here is Lucas Braun, a 24-year-old righty selected by Atlanta in the 2023 draft. Braun has seen success in the high levels of the minors as a starter; in 94 innings pitched this year across Double-A and Triple-A, he has a 3.53 ERA and a 3.76 FIP. The Royals also got Carter Holton, the 62nd overall pick in the 2024 draft who missed all of 2025 with Tommy John.

Well the Braves made their first of likely a handful of notable trades this trade deadline, trading two fringey pitching prospects for Lane Thomas and Bailey Falter from the Royals. Thomas will fit the role of a platoon outfielder and pinch hitter who can hit lefty pitching well and be a plus baserunner as needed. He should have a fairly concrete, if limited role. Falter is a more interesting case, as he has at times been a serviceable fifth starter at the major league level. What makes Falter so interesting to me is that he has what should be a really premium fastball, even sitting in the low 90s, with over 18 inches of induced vertical break and 97th percentile extension coming from the left side. The problem for him has been that he hasn't been able to develop a remotely respectable second pitch, let alone a third or fourth pitch. That said, that fastball is one heck of a starting point and is the type of pitch that could make him an interesting option out of the bullpen very easily, especially if the Braves can work with him to find any sort of second pitch that can work at the major league level.

Reynaldo Lopez was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday last minute due to a knee injury. He is now expected to hit the IL and will get imaging done on his knee, while JR Ritchie is expected to start Sunday.
Braves' first round pick AJ Gracia is reportedly getting season-ending surgery for a torn labrum, as he will hope to return at the beginning of next season.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Dillon Dingler hit a grand slam in Detroit's seven-run eighth inning and the Tigers opened their longest trip of the season with a 13-1 victory over the Athletics on Friday night.
Kevin McGonigle homered and drove in two runs, and fellow 2023 draft pick Max Clark had three hits, including an RBI double in the big eighth inning to help Detroit get the win in his big-league debut.
The Tigers got a strong performance from their bullpen after deciding to scratch scheduled starter Casey Mize in case a trade develops before Monday's deadline. Tyler Holton started and allowed one run in two innings. Ty Madden (1-0) allowed two hits in three scoreless innings to get the win.
The Tigers won for just the second time in six games to start a three-city West Coast swing and moved within 3 1/2 games of the final wild-card spot in the American League.
McGonigle tied the game with a solo homer off Jeffrey Springs (3-11) in the third inning, He added a sacrifice fly in the fourth in an inning aided by Clark's first career hit.

The Portland Trail Blazers are still trying to find their footing under new team owner Tom Dundon.
Portland made headlines in May after the organization laid off about 70 people as part of a restructuring. The negative press kept coming on Wednesday, when The Oregonian's Joe Freeman reported that longtime broadcaster Kevin Calabro was parting ways with the organization.
Calabro wasn't the only one. He left under his own terms, but Forbes' Maury Brown also reported that "TV **** yst Michael Holton and statistician Tom Haberstroh, as well as TV hosts Neil Everett and Jamie Hudson have all been let go."
Portland released a statement about the cuts to its broadcast teams.
"We are deeply grateful to all the hard-working individuals who have contributed to our award-winning broadcasts over the years. I can't comment on individual personnel decisions, but I can confirm that we are making changes for the upcoming season as we continue to evolve with the changes in the broadcast industry and look to become more efficient in our business operations.

Tom Dundon continues to apply his Hurricanes playbook to the Trail Blazers.
On Tuesday, the organization laid off the majority of its broadcast team including ***** yst Michael Holton, who has been with Trail Blazers for nearly 20 years. Hosts Neil Everett and Jamie Hudson and ***** ytics expert Tom Haberstroh were also let go.
A spokesperson for the Trail Blazers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The news was first reported by Forbes.
A Portland native, Everett was on ESPN for 23 years and anchored late-night SportsCenter for 12 years before he left the network in 2023; he had featured on Blazers broadcasts from 2021 to 2025.

Haberstroh is a prominent writer with a statistical bent and has run a popular Substack after departing Yahoo Sports.

LONDON, July 21 (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Tuesday he would cut taxes on electricity bills, the first of several early moves to signal his intent to ease a cost-of-living crisis and quell anger over successive governments' failure to bring change.
In his ‌second day in his new job, Burnham said his government would remove the value-added tax from domestic electricity bills from October 1, cutting around £45 from the ‌average annual bill of around £1,862 that households pay.
With bond investors watching closely for how any fiscal support would be paid for, he said the move would be funded by savings from the cancellation of a £1.8 billion ($2.42 billion) digital ID programme, announced on Sunday.
"We're taking immediate action to cut taxes on energy bills, put more money in people's pockets and bring back hope," he said in a statement, having pledged to give people more "breathing ***** e" in their lives.
