Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ:AMGN) shed roughly $12 billion in market value after hours on September 4, 2026. The stock declined by about 5% to $415. The reason, as strange as it sounds, is a drug it does not own. Novartis announced that pelacarsen, an Lp(a)-lowering therapy, missed its Phase 3 cardiovascular-outcomes trial, Lp(a)HORIZON. And since Amgen's late-stage ******* et olpasiran relies on the same biological premise, investors immediately marked down Amgen on the negative read-through.
The result strikes at a premise rather than at a product. Pelacarsenhad lowered Lp(a) by roughly 80% in earlier studies. In Lp(a)HORIZON, Novartis said pelacarsen substantially lowered Lp(a), but it still failed to reduce the composite of cardiovascular death, heart attack, stroke, and urgent revascularization. NEW LONDON - The Connecticut Heritage Maritime Festival is playing in this waterfront town this weekend. The "Eagle," the Coast Guard's iconic three-masted ship, will be a big draw.
On Thursday night, the New London football team got the party rolling a day early, running the "Jolly Jack" up the S.S. Cochran and defeating Joel Barlow 56-17 in a Connecticut High School Football Alliance game at Pat Cannamela Field that marked coach Jack Cochran's return to the New London sidelines after a 17-year absence.
Cochran and his Whalers came in with a roar - literally. They were led down to the field by a motorcycle escort.
From there, they simply kept revving.
Junior Zhi'Mir Maddox-Moore took the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown and later caught three touchdown passes from junior quarterback JoJo Rivera-Perry - all big-hitters for 30, 66 and 59 yards - as the home team built a 36-17 lead by halftime.

The Iran conflict remained the dominant force running through oil prices, tanker markets, LNG flows, sanctions policy, and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Yet one of the more revealing developments was how quickly commodity markets learned to absorb the uncertainty. Oil could rally on renewed fighting, fall on hopes for diplomacy, and then trade lower even as physical shipping constraints remained very real.
The industry's response told a different story. Producers, midstream companies, and governments continued committing capital to natural gas, new drilling inventory, offshore exploration, pipelines, ports, automation, and alternative supply routes. August was therefore not simply a month defined by war or volatile crude prices. It was a month that exposed how deeply intertwined energy security, infrastructure, technology, and access to resources are becoming.

This week, the club and Trust installed a bench in Gunnersbury Park, the sixth to be added in the local area to encourage the community to pause, connect and talk.
Last season, some of our players took to the benches to share their own experiences of mental health, including Fábio Carvalho and former Bees player Jordan Henderson. The installation of benches was inspired by Brentford's longstanding commitment to supporting mental wellbeing and the work of consultant psychologist Michael Caulfield, whose bench at the Robert Rowan Performance Centre (RRPC) provides a safe, confidential ***** e for players, coaches and staff to speak.
On Saturday, ahead of our game against Sunderland, from 12.30pm the RRPC bench will be located outside Entrance B at Gtech Community Stadium so fans can make a personal commitment linked to mental wellbeing and supporting others.
Trained representatives from Brentford FC Community Sports Trust and the Samaritans will be on hand to speak with supporters and provide information about health and wellbeing programmes available in the local community.
This season, Talking is the Best Tactic is encouraging supporters to take small actions towards better mental health through simple conversations or small acts of support.

MOSCOW, Aug 12 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia will respond in kind if European countries start to seize Russian merchant vessels and the commander of Russia's Pacific Fleet said his forces were ready to "inspect and detain" foreign vessels from what he called hostile states.
The comments, which Putin made as he oversaw navy drills in Russia's far east, come as the EU tries to ratchet up pressure on Russia's so-called shadow fleet, expanding sanctions against hundreds of vessels and detaining some ships and their crews for checks. Some European governments have said they are exploring tougher maritime enforcement measures against ships suspected of sanctions evasion.
"We can see that the authorities of certain countries, in violation of international maritime law, are attempting to restrict the movement of our economic operators' vessels..., and have recently gone so far as to consider the possibility of seizing our vessels and selling off the property they have plundered from us," Putin said.

Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) just landed one of the largest single contract awards in its history. On July 29, the Department of War handed the defense giant a seven-year, up to $53.86 billion undefinitized contract action for PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement interceptors, pushing the total multiyear deal to $58.62 billion once the $4.7 billion awarded back in April is added in. That is not an error, which raises a clear question: what is driving this level of demand?
The answer starts with real-world consumption. Fewer than 800 Patriot missiles reportedly remain in US inventories, a stockpile a CSIS report pegs as having lost 65% of its prewar 2,330 count during the Iran conflict, leaving roughly four years of production at the old pace to cover what got burned through in under three months of fighting. Lockheed is responding by tripling PAC-3 MSE production capacity by the end of 2030 and growing its Camden, Arkansas workforce from 1,200 to about 1,850 employees. This is Lockheed's second major multiyear award under the Department's Acquisition Transformation Strategy, following the $35 billion THAAD contract, and the company is backing it with $8 billion to $9 billion in facility investment through 2030, including new munitions centers in Troy, Alabama and Camden.
A cheaper companion missile, the PAC-3 Adapted Capability Effector priced around $2.5 million versus MSE's roughly $4 million, is being positioned as complementary rather than a cannibal of MSE volume, meaning it adds revenue instead of splitting it. Layer in the $3.5 billion Ultra Maritime acquisition that expanded Lockheed into undersea defense, and a business already generating $75.1 billion in FY2025 revenue, up 5.7%, with $6.9 billion in free cash flow and a net margin near 6.7%, looks like it is compounding its core strength rather than searching for a new one.
The flip side of that strength is dependency. Roughly 72% of 2025 sales came from the US government, and the F-35 program alone accounts for about 27% of revenue, meaning any shift in Washington's spending priorities or a program delay would hit Lockheed harder than a diversified industrial company. The balance sheet carries real leverage too, with debt to equity near 3.2x and a current ratio of just 1.1x, leaving a thinner liquidity cushion than investors might expect from a company this size.
Lockheed is also fighting a $4.25 billion lawsuit over alleged technology misappropriation and regularly defends against cyberattacks aimed at its sensitive intellectual property. Princess Ingrid Alexandra has been pictured on her first day at university after a difficult few months.
The future Queen of Norway, 22, was officially welcomed to the University of Oslo on Monday, where she will study at the Faculty of Social Sciences on exchange from the University of Sydney in Australia.
It marks the start of an exciting new chapter for Ingrid, who has chosen to return to Norway to be closer to her mother, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, who was described as "seriously ill" before she underwent a lung transplant in June.

European soccer's governing body says it delivered payments to a woman who British newspaper The Telegraph alleges was involved in an extra-marital relationship with Gianni Infantino.
Infantino is now the president of FIFA, global soccer's governing body, but the relationship allegedly took place while the Swiss administrator served as UEFA's general secretary between October 2009 and February 2016.
The newspaper reported Infantino promoted the woman while they were carrying on their relationship, with the woman given a six-figure payment and also seeing her MBA study covered by UEFA. The governing body says its records indicate a payment was made and the course was covered but says that was in line with the organization's regulations at the time of the incident.
"We are aware of the allegations and can confirm a departure payment was made to the individual in question, coupled with the payment of fees for an MBA course at a local business school," UEFA said in a statement shared with USA TODAY Sports. The payment was in line with the regulations that existed for departing staff at the time.
"Such regulations have been tightened since 2016 and the current staff regulations – which apply to all Uefa employees at whatever level – reflect those found in a modern, high-profile organisation."

TotalEnergies has also taken over operations of the massive Mopane discovery from Portugal's Galp Energia (OTCPK:GLPEF).
Last month, Shell Plc (NYSE:SHEL) and its JV partners reported a major oil discovery at the Merlin-1X exploration well within Petroleum Exploration Licence 39 (PEL 39). Located in Namibia's Orange Basin roughly 290 kilometers off the coast, the resource has recoverable reserves estimated at 750 million barrels for Phase 1. The success of Merlin-1X marks a critical turnaround for the consortium.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — The head of U.S. Pacific Command said Monday that coercive actions by China and other actors are challenging regional stability, warning the United States will not allow any nation to dominate the Indo-Pacific.
Admiral Samuel Paparo said some actors were using "false claims of legitimacy" to justify intimidation and coercion.
"That's not the rule of law. That's the rule by law. That distinction between law as a tool of order versus law as a weapon of raw power, is the defining fault line of our time," he said via video link at a regional security conference in Malaysia organized by the U.S. Pacific Command.
Paparo's remarks come as tensions remain high in the South China Sea, where China's expansive maritime claims overlap with those of several Southeast Asian nations. The Philippines has been at the center of a series of confrontations with China, particularly around a disputed shoal, where Chinese and Philippine vessels have repeatedly faced off.
Manila has accused Beijing of dangerous maneuvers, water cannon attacks and attempts to block Philippine resupply missions. China has rejected those accusations and maintains its territorial claims in the disputed waterway.

Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife, Cherelle Griner, after eight years of marriage and is seeking joint legal and physical custody of their 2-year-old son.
According to court documents obtained by People, the WNBA veteran submitted the complaint in Fulton County Superior Court in Georgia on July 30.
The filing lists July 24 as the couple's separation date and describes the marriage as "irretrievably broken," with "no hope of reconciliation."
Neither Brittney nor Cherelle has publicly explained what led to their separation.
Brittney is requesting joint legal and physical custody of the couple's son, Bash, who was born in July 2024. She is also asking for child support to be determined and for the couple's marital ***** ets and debts to be divided equitably.
