LAS VEGAS – Silvestre Sanchez had the opportunity to show off his complete game on Dana White's Contender Series, but a UFC contract may have not come his way without a late finish.
Sanchez (10-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) earned a UFC contract by finishing Liam McCracken in the third round. A vicious left hook floored McCracken (8-2), making his entry into the promotion a sure thing. Without that punctuation mark in the closing round, UFC CEO Dana White said he may not have awarded a contract, despite Sanchez showing off stellar skills everywhere the fight went.
Luckily, the Mexico-born lightweight got the job done and will now have the opportunity to show more of what he can do under the bright lights of the UFC, and he hopes it means more fighters from his country will have an opportunity in the future.
"That was always a goal, to be here in the UFC since I started in mixed martial arts," Sanchez told MMA Junkie and other reporters through an interpreter during a post-fight news conference. "It's a dream come true, but also the start of hard work – and not just for myself, but also for Nayarit, because this opens the door for all the talent that's there. Maybe I've opened the door for more people from there to make a splash as well.
"... I think the UFC PI in Mexico is one of the most important hotbeds of talent in the world right now. The work that they're doing there is amazing because the level of sparring that I've had, the people on my team, the people that have worked with me, they've given me a tough challenge. You know if someone comes through Contender Series into the UFC, coming from the PI in Mexico City, you know it's someone who's ready for wars."

It actually worked out for Senga, as he pitched four scoreless innings before running out of gas in the fifth of the Mets' 5-2 loss to the Marlins. He allowed three earned runs -- two coming after he was pulled -- on two hits and two walks while striking out four.
"He was phenomenal today for a guy who hasn't been out there for 13-14 days. You can't ask for anything more," interim manager Andy Green said after the game. "That was an impressive four innings. If I'm handling that right, that's the end of his night and he feels really good about himself."
"To be honest, there was some fear - I hope it's gonna go okay," Senga said of his outing after being down for so long via an interpreter. "Despite that, I was able to go out there, not be too tense or anything, and go out there and pitch."

French superstar Kylian Mbappé has scored 20 World Cup goals in 20 World Cup appearances. He’s poised to take the pitch again on Tuesday against Spain in the 2026 World Cup, according to his manager, Didier Deschamps, who told reporters that Mbappé is “100%” heading into the semifinal match.
Mbappé left France's quarterfinal victory over Morocco last week in the 77th minute with what Deschamps characterized as a “minor ankle injury,” per The Athletic. Suarez, named an American League All-Star on Saturday, left Sunday night’s 7-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels because of left-adductor tightness, an injury he said he suffered on a pitch to Jo Adell with two outs in the third inning.
Suarez probably aggravated the injury when he jumped for Adell’s chopper over the mound, a ball that went for an infield single. Interim manager Chad Tracy and a team trainer came to the mound, where Suarez threw one warmup pitch to test the leg before immediately heading for the visiting dugout.
“With that pitch that I threw, I felt a big pinch around the groin area,” Suarez said through an interpreter. “I tried to throw another pitch, but I still felt it, so I came out.”
Suarez, who signed a five-year, $130-million free-agent deal with the Red Sox last winter, said he could not recall suffering a similar injury. He underwent treatment during the game but said the injury “felt the same” by the time he spoke to reporters 2 1/2 hours later.

He's been traveling with the White Sox and following Sunday's 7-6 win over the Guardians, manager Will Venable said Murakami will leave to play with the Knights. If all goes well, it's possible he could be back with Chicago before the All-Star break.

Major League Baseball announced on Saturday the initial rosters for the American and National League All-Star teams. This included each team's starting lineup (chosen by fans) as well as their pitchers and reserves (chosen by players and the commissioner's office).
Arozarena was the only Mariner named to the team for the AL. He was not selected by fan vote, nor did any Mariners players make it to the second phase of fan voting. But he's a deserving All-Star nonetheless, ranking fifth among AL outfielders with 2.3 fWAR. He's been the Mariners most valuable hitter with a 141 wRC+ (.280/.370/.436) and their most valuable base runner (19 stolen bases and 2.2 BsR). “I feel very happy, very proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish,” Chapman said through an interpreter. “I just feel very satisfied right now.”
The strikeout was the 1,364th in Chapman’s 17-year career. It broke the record long held by Hoyt Wilhelm, the Hall of Famer whose 21-year career ended back in 1972, just five days shy of his 50th birthday.

Guo Wengui, who fled China a decade ago and reinvented himself as a US -based Communist Party critic, was sentenced in a Manhattan courtroom packed with his supporters by Judge ******* isa Torres. She said he "preyed on those seeking to bring Democracy to China," taking their money so he could live lavishly.
Before he was sentenced, Guo protested his treatment in jail, saying he was taken to the hospital early Monday. He disputed a prosecutor's portrayal of him as a malinger faking illness, saying he repeatedly vomited as he was returned to jail before being brought to court.
"When I came here, I said: 'I have a tummy ache, I need to go to the bathroom, I don't feel well,'" Guo said through an interpreter of his courthouse arrival. Later, Guo wiped his mouth repeatedly with a tissue.
He only briefly addressed the criminal case, defending his intentions by saying in reference to the Chinese Communist Party: "The reason I came to the US was to destroy the CCP."
