It is time for another round of preseason over/under for the 2026-27 Pittsburgh Penguins.
This past week we looked at Ben Kindel and the team's youngest players (or potential young players). This week we are going to take a look at some of the newest offseason additions and what they might be capable of this season.
Let's get started.
Of all the players the Penguins brought in this offseason, I think Robertson is the one that has the best chance to really make a big impact, both now and in the long-term future.
He is still only 24 years old (soon-to-be 25) and has at least shown he has NHL skill, and perhaps still some untapped potential.

Golf architect Kyle Phillips has broken ground on the course at the private Pandion Club in Estero, Florida. The new layout, intended to invoke the heathland courses of England with Lowcountry influences, is being built on the site of the former Old Corkscrew Golf Club that was closed earlier this year.
Phillips plans a par-71 course for Pandion Club, stretching to 7,220 with firm and fast playing conditions and a premium on strategic shotmaking. The new layout is scheduled to open in 2027 with membership capped at 280. The golf-only club will include a Lowcountry-inspired clubhouse and expansive practice facilities. The name Pandion is inspired by Pandion haliaetus, aka osprey.
The layout features sandy terrain that should promote Phillips' goals. Having built the top-ranked Kingsbarns Golf Links and Dundonald Links in Scotland and having studied courses around the world, Phillips said that heathland courses are situated on inland dunes, "like the ones we have in Florida."
Old Corkscrew and additional surrounding land was purchased in 2022 by The Hoffmann Family of Companies for $14.5 million, according to property records reported by the Naples Daily News. The Hoffmans purchased the Cottages at Old Corkscrew Golf Club for $4.5 million in a separate transaction. The Hoffmanns also own Old Collier Golf Club in Naples, as well as the Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Everblades.
"Everything we do at Hoffmann Family of Companies, we want to provide a unique, best-in-class experience for our guests, and Pandion is going to be no exception" Geoff Hoffmann, CEO of HF Companies' private equity arm, said in a media release announcing the start of construction. "From the moment that you drive through our gates, you will know that you have arrived somewhere special. You are going to feel like you are in nature, and this is an escape. We knew that his experience presented an opportunity to preserve the natural landscape that was embedded on the site, and that's something we are going to build around."

The amount of young talent in the Pittsburgh Penguins organization is filling up quickly. CapWages has 21 players on Pittsburgh’s reserve list for unsigned drafted players and the team has 22 others under contract that will be playing in the pro ranks next season. Once upon a time, finding 25 players to even rank was a tall task, now there are some decent enough names that won’t draw a mention at all for this year’s list considering that there are over 40 options between signed players and the reserve list. Today hopes to appease that with an honorable mention of five players on the cusp of making the list, all of whom show the potential to be ranked next year with favorable upcoming seasons.
Earlier in the week we kicked off Top 25 Under 25 season by looking at the players that won’t be a part of this year’s list due to aging out, being traded or otherwise leaving the organization. As a loose rule, we’re saying for now that 2019 draftees like Elmer Soderblom (who turned 25 earlier this summer) and Nick Robertson (who has his 25th birthday in September) are ineligible this year. 2020 draftees that are under the age of 25 currently, like Hendrix Lapierre and Joel Blomqvist meet the cut-off as fair game this year.
The top 25 under 25 series was a staple within the SBN Hockey blogs a decade ago, around here it’s morphed into what I like to think about as a snapshot in time for value and importance within the organization. It’s not meant to be purely predictive of which player may be the best pro in three, five or seven years but show how the young players currently stack up against one another.
In many ways it’s an impossible task, and a very subjective one. How does one weigh a 24-year old that figures to have a short leash at making an NHL impact (like a Phil Tomasino or Sam Poulin last year) against a fresh-faced 18 year old that was just drafted and doesn’t figure to turn pro for several years? Not to mention everything in between. It’s certainly a balancing act where guaranteed contributions to the NHL level count for something, even with the real possibility of a short shelf life and some projections also have to be taken into account for expected/hoped for futures.
Since this is a value-based snapshot in time, another handy tool may be to consider a hypothetical trade. If you **** ume a trade is going to happen and the other side wants either prospect X or young player Y to finalize the deal, which **** et would the organization be better off holding onto? The answer to that judgement can go a long way towards determining where the young players will slot in against each other for this list, though it isn’t a strict rule of thumb since some player profiles (puck moving defenseman) might have more trade value than organizational value than other spots (goalie, small winger). That consideration is at least some factor in aligning the rankings.

The moment that Pittsburgh Penguins fans feared would never happen took place Sept. 5 in a packed Mellon Arena media room, when Mario Lemieux stepped to the podium and presented 20-year-old Russian hockey star Evgeni Malkin with a No. 71 Penguins jersey.
Malkin, the team's first round draft pick (second overall) in 2004, could not contain his smile as he draped the jersey over his ******* on-down shirt.
"I am really happy to be here today," he said through his interpreter, Olga McQueen. "It was my dream to come here and play for the Pittsburgh Penguins."
The Penguins' new marketing slogan – "Experience the Evolution" – might have to be changed to "Experience the Russian Evolution" in the wake of Malkin's incredible odyssey. In early August, he abandoned his hometown team, Metallurg Magnitogorsk, at the Helsinki Airport. He'd just signed a one-year deal with the club, but said he did so under extreme pressure from team management. He quickly realized his mistake.

Former Toronto Maple Leafs **** istant general manager Brandon Pridham will be joining the Pittsburgh Penguins as a hockey operations consultant.
According to a new report from Sportsnet inside Elliotte Friedman, Pridham is expected to handle contract, cap management, and planning responsibilities with the Penguins.
The duties Pridham is expected to take on were previously being handled by Vickie Mpofu, who recently departed the Penguins organization for Nashville.
Joining the Penguins will be a reunion of sorts for Pridham, who spent the past 12 seasons in Toronto with the Maple Leafs, with a number of those years working alongside Kyle Dubas.
Earlier this year, Pridham and the Maple Leafs mutually agreed to part ways after the team made changes at the management level, bringing in John Chayka as general manager.

Just a day after the arbitration hearing schedule was announced, the Pittsburgh Penguins and restricted free agent winger Nick Robertson won’t need their scheduled court date.
Tuesday, the Penguins and Robertson agreed to a two-year deal with a $3.25 million average annual value, thus avoiding arbitration and locking up the 24-year-old winger for a couple of seasons.
Robertson, 24, made just over $1.8 million last season.

But on June 28, with their second choice of the second round of the 2026 NHL Draft, the Penguins became the team to finally select Galvas (54th overall).
After getting a good look at the prospect during last week’s Development Camp, on Thursday, the team signed him to his three-year entry-level contract.
The 5-foot-10, 168-pound defender ranked fifth overall on his team in points and led the team’s defensemen in goals and ******* ists.

Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas had a busy afternoon, signing four restricted free agents to new contracts and avoiding arbitration with the RFAs.
First up was Egor Chinakhov.
Chinakhov handsomely rewarded the Pittsburgh Penguins’ belief that he could be more than a lightly used fourth-line player. Sunday afternoon, the Penguins rewarded him with a new three-year contract.

Pittsburgh wasn’t a part of the big trades leading up to the 2026 NHL Draft and during the draft. So, ahead of free agency beginning on July 1, Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas isn’t sure the team will make any big moves as he believes the market will be expensive.
“We can be as aggressive as we want on July 1,” Dubas said. “But if you look at what’s available, it could be an expensive mistake. I try to learn from the past. We’ll try to steer clear of that. If it’s not a significant move in the short run, rather than do something for the sake of doing it, I’d rather say we aspired to do it, but the options weren’t there. We’ve had to check down and continue to build it up the way that we have.”
Although Dubas isn’t sure how aggressive the Penguins will be in free agency, he said he will be engaged in the free agent market, as well as trades.

The Nashville Predators have made a third trade in the 2026 NHL Draft.
After trading up to get Tommy Bleyl on Day 1, then adding forward Adam Edstrom from the New York Rangers, the Predators have traded the No. 160 pick (fifth round) to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a fifth-round pick in the 2028 draft.

After taking two forwards with their first two picks, the Penguins selected defenseman Tomas Galvas with the 54th overall pick in the 2026 NHL draft. The overage 20-year old has spent the last four years in the Czech league.
Neutral Zone
Galvas has clearly proven he can impact games offensively against men, which is a major positive and separates him from typical junior-only producers. His offensive toolkit is high-end as he generates 1.03 scoring chances per game with a strong 15% conversion rate, moves pucks at an elite level (92% pass completion, 2.3 pre-shot passes/game), and consistently drives transition with his skating, vision and hard flat passes, which aligns with prior Neutral Zone reports highlighting his agility, deception, and ability to create ****** e under pressure. He plays with confidence and poise, and his ability to activate offensively and distribute through layers makes him a legitimate power play driver. However, the concerns remain consistent and are amplified by NHL standards: at 5'10', 173 pounds, he is undersized relative to NHL players, and while his skating allows him to defend with positioning, his 50% puck battle win rate and low physical engagement (0.33 hits/game) show clear limitations in handling heavier, interior play at higher levels. His tendency to over-activate offensively and get caught up ice continues to show up in his game, and while his offensive instincts are a strength, they can come at the expense of defensive structure as he enjoys playing a high-risk game. Additionally, his defensive zone play remains average, relying more on skating recovery than physical stops in the corner or net-front control. M. Ruck is a left handed forward that is more of a playmaker compared to his brother's penchant for goal scoring. Markus led the WHL in scoring.

The ******* le a nod to song from a certain movie, anyways it’s difficult to draft NHL players. NHL teams are tasked with scouting players mostly when they are 16 and 17 years old and have to try and rank what they will be as fully formed adults. Needless to say, it’s not an exact science and a process that ends up with more misses than hits. Our results of making picks alongside the Penguins at their spot in the draft has gone about the same way. Here’s the last decade of fake vs real drafting.
Well, on the plus side at least four out of the five mock picks prior to 2025 that we made played in the NHL last season. That’s better than the Pens ended up with in reality. A player like Hoglander has spun his wheels professionally in recent years (really, he might just need to get out of Vancouver ASAP to benefit his career) and might not be looking to be as proud of a pick as it might have seemed a couple years ago when he produced a 24-goal season. Hoglander’s recent career plateau aside, he worked out a lot better than the actual pick of Sam Poulin did.
The real Pittsburgh 2020 first round pick got traded in the last minute to Toronto for Kasperi Kapanen. The Maple Leafs ended up using that pick to select forward Rodion Amirov, who sadly passed away in 2023 after battling brain cancer. The Penguins ended up getting 162 games and 82 points (29 goals + 53 ******* ists) out of Kapanen before waiving him in 2023 and seeing him go to St. Louis. Zary, for his part, has 86 points (and some good defensive metrics) in 191 games with Calgary. So I guess there’s a case to be made that the Pens would have been better off in the long run for holding onto their pick depending on what they did with it, but then again they wanted a NHL forward for 2020-22 to help their late-stage contention windows and it ended up not panning out since Kapanen didn’t help push the team that far forward while he was on it, and then was jettisoned as a bad contract to allow more cap ******* e via dropping him for nothing.
2022 isn’t looking to great either for our pick, or for the Penguins after draft+4. Ivan Miroshnichenko has only played 52 career NHL games, mostly as a spare part forward. He has become an excellent AHL player but needs to make a big move soon if he’s going to establish himself. Owen Pickering, well we’ve all spent a lot of time on his case. We remain convinced former Penguins GM Ron Hextall thought/hoped he had found Travis Sanheim 2.0 when he drafted Pickering – unfortunately though, at this point there’s enough evidence to say that he got Temu Sanheim instead. Pickering might go on to play NHL games in a modest role, it looks like he will fall short of his draft day ceiling of a matchup defender that could have played up the lineup.
We have plans for a victory lap in 2023, Matthew Wood scored 17 goals and put up 30 points in the NHL in his draft+3 season with Nashville. That’s the dream development curve from a mid-first round pick these days, gotta see som

St. Ivany did pretty much what was expected of him and served as a capable organizational depth defenseman. He did not wow you, but he played hard and filled in when needed. As long as he played within that role, he was a fine player to have on the roster. But it seemed that the more he played (both in terms of minutes per game and the actual number of games), the more some of his flaws and shortcomings would become exposed.
He only played in 20 games for the Penguins at the NHL level and eight games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at the AHL level, while missing several weeks in the middle of the season due to a hand injury. That came after he missed significant time at the start of the regular season due to a foot injury he suffered in a preseason game.

Through his first 17 games of the season in December and January there was a lot to like about St. Ivany’s box score numbers. He had seven points, was a plus-7, blocked 23 shots and accumulated 40 hits in about 15:30 of ice-time per game. He was not playing a major role, but he was not exactly serving as a liability.

It was announced on Tuesday that former Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel will receive one of the highest honors given by the university when he is added to the Ring of Honor at Ohio Stadium during the 2026 season opener against Ball State.
Tressel will be the third head coach in the Ring of Honor, joining Paul Brown and Woody Hayes. The current Lt. Governor of Ohio will be the first Buckeye inducted into the Ring of Honor since Troy Smith in 2014.
Tressel was named the head coach at Ohio State following the 2000 season after the dismissal of John Cooper. Prior to agreeing to become head coach of the Buckeyes, Tressel had served as an ******* istant coach under Earle Bruce at Ohio State from 1983-85.
Following the 1985 season, Tressel was hired by Youngstown State, where he spent 15 seasons and amassed a 135-57-2 record while in charge of the Penguins, leading the program to four Division 1-AA national ******* les.
Shortly after he was hired as the next head coach of the football team, Tressel quickly earned the admiration of Buckeye Nation when he said during halftime of a basketball game between Michigan and Ohio State that Ohio State fans would be proud of the football team, most especially in 310 days on in Ann Arbor when the Buckeyes and Wolverines squared off.

The NHL's move to an 84-game season in 2026-27 means the Blue Jackets will play only four preseason games.
They'll be split evenly between Nationwide Arena and two road games, including one home and one road game against the Detroit Red Wings plus a home game against the Pittsburgh Penguins and road matchup at the Buffalo Sabres.
The games will be played Sept. 21-26, starting with a back-to-back Sept. 21 against Detroit at Nationwide Arena and Sept. 22 in Buffalo. The Penguins visit Columbus on Sept. 24 before the Blue Jackets close out the preseason Sept. 26 in Detroit.
All four games will start at 7 p.m., leading into the start of a regular-season schedule that has yet to be released.

The Red Wings will host, but Detroit's tournament is now held at Belfor Training Center inside Little Caesars Arena rather than at Centre ice Arena in Traverse City, Michigan.
