Interested in Walmart Inc.? Here are five stocks we like better.
Target trades at roughly 15 times earnings with a 3% yield, presenting value relative to Walmart and Costco ahead of the holiday season.
Aggressive price cuts on over 10,000 items and October Deal Days discounts of up to 40% could drive market-beating Q3 and holiday results.
Dividend growth exceeding 50 years, buyback capacity, and heavy institutional ownership near 80% help limit downside risk into 2026.
Believe it or not, the holiday shopping season is here, so it's time to consider the best plays. As it stands, seasonal sales growth is expected to accelerate year over year to 4.55% to 4.8%, topping $1.7 trillion for the first time, underpinned as always by e-commerce. Digital sales are expected to top 8% seasonally and may outpace expectations as AI adoption accelerates. Hyperscalers, business services, and merchants are embedding AI throughout the digital retail stack, and it is resonating with consumers. An estimated 25% to 30% of shoppers say they will use AI this season for help with research, price comparisons, and budgeting.

In July, Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Satya Nadella surprised AI stock investors with an uncomfortable way to think about what they were buying into.
As I wrote for TheStreet in "Microsoft CEO adds fuel to Palantir CEO's AI warning," Nadella argued that companies weren't merely paying for tokens. Moreover, they were feeding outside models the prompts, corrections, and institutional knowledge that eventually make those systems useful for their users.
"You essentially pay for intelligence twice, once with money, and again with something even more valuable," Nadella wrote in his July essay.
Days later, that warning became a central part of Palantir's bull case. Now, two months on, Palantir and Nvidia, two of the biggest names in the AI ******* e, are starting to act on it.
Palantir CEO Alex Karp pushed the argument further, which I covered in "Palantir CEO escalates Microsoft's AI warning."

Heavy volume in Apple Inc. (AAPL) puts expiring in one year with a strike price 4% lower shows that institutional investors are bullish on AAPL. In addition, this short-put play provides a 6.76% one-year yield.
AAPL is trading at $322.96 midday on Wednesday, Sept. 16. This is off a recent peak of $340.08 on July 28, but up from a trough of $302.25 on Aug. 12.

Investors continue to ask for more timely information, even as the volume available to them expands. A 2026 CFA Institute survey of 2,500 **** ysts and portfolio managers found that 62% opposed replacing quarterly reporting with semiannual reporting. Nearly 85% expressed concern about comparability if companies and investment managers could determine their own reporting frequency and format. Access remains important, while interpretation requires a separate discipline.
The demand also concerns the quality of disclosure. PwC's 2025 Global Investor Survey, covering 1,074 investment professionals across 26 countries and territories, found that only 37% believed companies disclosed enough about artificial intelligence strategies and policies. Respondents wanted greater transparency around innovation strategies, AI investment, and expected returns. These findings suggest that investors can face abundant commentary while still lacking the evidence needed to **** s a thesis.
Commercial incentives add another layer. A 2025 CFA Institute report examined continuation funds, in which a manager can oversee both the vehicle selling an **** et and the vehicle buying it. The report recognized the structure's liquidity role and identified conflicts requiring fair processes and governance. The example illustrates why informed **** ysis and aligned incentives are separate considerations.
That distinction applies beyond any single investment structure. Managers often possess valuable operational knowledge because they work directly with **** ets, tenants and financing markets. They may also be raising capital for the strategies they discuss. Their commercial interest becomes additional context for investors weighing forecasts, market narratives and recommendations alongside independently produced evidence. That context can help an investment committee separate a source's knowledge of the market from the confidence it should place in the source's preferred outcome during capital allocation.
Geoffrey Dohrmann, chairman, CEO and editor-in-chief of Institutional Real Estate, Inc., has watched those narratives develop across several market cycles. IREI is a media and market intelligence company covering institutional real estate and infrastructure through publications, research, data, events and consulting. Dohrmann explains its editorial role as independently recording where real-asset capital is moving and examining the explanations offered for those decisions.

Weitz Investment Management, an investment management firm, released its second-quarter Q2 2026 investor letter for the "Multi Cap Equity Fund". The letter can be downloaded here. The Multi Cap Equity Fund's Institutional Class returned 7.90% in Q2, underperforming the Bloomberg U.S. 3000 Index's 15.71% gain. Markets rose in the quarter on hopes of de-escalating Middle East tensions and easing oil flow. Investor focus shifted back to artificial intelligence, despite component shortages like processing chips affecting profits and valuations. Valuation-sensitive investors are selective within the AI sector, in contrast to valuation-agnostic indexes that adopt a more relaxed strategy. Additionally, reviewing the Fund's top five holdings could help identify its best picks for 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Weitz Multi Cap Equity Fund highlighted Accenture plc (NYSE:ACN). Weitz Multi Cap Equity Fund stated the following regarding Accenture plc (NYSE:ACN) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"IT services and management consultant Accenture plc (NYSE:ACN) reported results in mid-June that did little to quell investor fears of AI-disintermediation. Accenture has a long history of helping clients navigate technological transformation, and we believe it will again play a role as AI permeates businesses. To date, however, we have maintained a smaller position given the higher-than-usual degree of uncertainty."

In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Weitz Multi Cap Equity Fund highlighted Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) as a newly added postion. Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) is a leading subscription-based streaming entertainment platform. On September 15, 2026, Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) posted a one‑month return of -2.89%, while its shares lost 36.59% over the past 52 weeks.
Weitz Multi Cap Equity Fund stated the following regarding Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"We initiated two new positions during the second quarter. Most will be familiar with global streaming giant, Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX). The company made headlines as it tried to acquire Warner Bros. from Warner Bros. Discovery before ultimately walking away from a bidding war for the company. Some investors feared its bid signaled stagnation in its streaming business. At the time of this writing, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is also captivating audiences and draining attention and engagement from Netflix's service. Despite these near-term perception headwinds, we are optimistic that Netflix's introduction of an ad-supported tier is a savvy strategy to extend its growth runway: Netflix will not only participate in the large, multi-billion-dollar global advertising market, but a lower-price ad-tier broadens its potential customer base while simultaneously enhancing the pricing power of its premium, ad free tier."
Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) ranks 13 on our list of 40 Most Popular Stocks Among Hedge Funds Heading Into 2026. According to our database, 121 hedge fund portfolios held Netflix, Inc. If online prediction markets are correct, the Democrats are likely to win back the House and Senate in November. On Polymarket, there's currently a 53% chance of a Democratic sweep.
If you're a crypto investor, that outcome could have important consequences for your portfolio. That's especially the case if Democrats delay, roll back, or block important pro-crypto legislation. With that in mind, here's one crypto to buy and one crypto to sell.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
My one crypto to buy is Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC). It is still the most popular cryptocurrency, accounting for a whopping 60% of the crypto market's total $2.6 trillion market cap. As Bitcoin goes, so goes the crypto market.
As a result, Bitcoin currently has the support of both Wall Street and the White House, so any political fallout from the midterm elections in the event of a Democratic sweep should be minimal. Regulators already agree that Bitcoin is a commodity, not a security. Thus, even if the Clarity Act does not pass this year, it shouldn't have a direct impact on the regulatory status of Bitcoin and how institutional investors view it.

DEUTZ is transforming itself from an engine manufacturer into a broader industrial and defense group, but that expansion is proving expensive.
The company raised €179 million (about $207 million) overnight by issuing new shares to institutional investors, strengthening its balance sheet at the cost of another round of dilution for existing shareholders.
DEUTZ shares dropped roughly 5% after the German engine maker completed an accelerated share placement that raised approximately €179 million. The company issued 15.26 million new shares at €11.70 each, increasing its share capital by 10% to almost 168 million shares.
The placement price was 4.8% below the previous session's €12.29 Xetra close, and the stock opened around 5.7% lower at €11.58 before recovering some ground.

Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) and Valneva SE (NASDAQ:VALN) reported on August 14 that the European Medicines Agency has validated the Marketing Authorization Application for PF-07307405, the companies' experimental Lyme disease vaccine candidate, and will now begin the official review.
For a vaccine candidate first proposed in a 2020 collaboration deal between Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) and French biotech Valneva SE (NASDAQ:VALN), this represents the formal transition from years of clinical development into European regulatory review.
The application is based on the Phase 3 VALOR trial, a placebo-controlled, randomized study of 9,437 participants aged five and older from high-incidence Lyme disease locations in US, Canada, and Europe. Participants got four doses on a phased schedule: one at months 0, 2, and 5-9, followed by a fourth dosage around a year later, shortly before the start of the next Lyme season. Topline data released in March 2026 demonstrated efficacy of over 70% in reducing confirmed Lyme disease cases, with the vaccine generally tolerated and no safety issues detected. However, the statistical picture was less clean than the headline efficacy suggests. The first prespecified **** ysis, which served as the primary endpoint, showed 73.2% efficacy but failed the trial's predefined statistical criterion because the lower bound of the 95% confidence interval was 15.8%, below the required 20%. A second prespecified **** ysis showed 74.8% efficacy and did meet that threshold.
Valneva SE (NASDAQ:VALN), the smallest of the two partners, views the vaccine as a clean competitive setup. According to the company, PF-07307405 is the most advanced Lyme disease vaccine candidate currently in clinical development, a rare spot in the vaccine industry where new entrants often face competition from existing treatments. Under the terms of the 2020 partnership and license agreement, Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) will have exclusive rights to produce and commercialize the vaccine if it is approved, while Valneva SE (NASDAQ:VALN) will benefit as a development partner.
The institutional stance is very different between the two companies, reflecting their very different sizes. Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) is still a strong name in the institutional **** e, with hedge fund ownership stable at 83 funds in the second quarter of 2026, the same as the first quarter, reflecting its position as a large, diversified pharmaceutical holding, rather than a name driven by a specific pipeline event. Valneva SE (NASDAQ:VALN), however, has little hedge fund exposure, with only 4 funds holding a position in the second quarter, up from 1 in the first quarter, reflecting the continued lack of visibility of the smaller partner among institutional investors.

Realty Income (NYSE:O) aims to be the real estate partner to the world's leading companies. It has really leaned into forming new capital partnerships with leading institutional investors over the past year. It just formed a new joint venture (JV) with KKR, adding to prior strategic partnership deals with Apollo and GIC.
These partnerships might have income investors wondering if they're a sign of financial strength or weakness. Here's how they align with Realty Income's strategic plan to continue growing its high-yielding monthly dividend (currently 5.5%).

Realty Income is a real estate investment trust (REIT) with a globally diversified portfolio of net lease real estate. It launched an investment management platform (Realty Income Investment Management or RIM) last year to allow institutional investors to invest alongside it through funds, JVs, and separately managed mandates. This strategy has four key advantages: accelerating its adjusted funds from operations (AFFO) per share growth through capital-light revenue, expanding its addressable market, reducing its reliance on public equity, and providing its partners with distinct, non-overlapping vehicles.

It's good when a stock forms a bullish chart pattern, and even better when institutional investors pour larger sums into buying those stocks. Three stocks offer that attractive combination: Travelers (TRV), AI stock Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), and housing play Welltower (WELL).
The three are in the IBD Stock Screener, specifically the Stocks That Funds Are Buying list. This screen uses IBD data to identify multimillion dollar trades on the upside, i.e., institutional demand.
After a summer rally, Travelers is pausing to form a flat base with a 398.69 buy point. Shares of the auto, home and business insurer had their best day of the year on July 17, when they jumped 9%. Lower catastrophe losses and higher net investment income made for a bullish second-quarter report. More than 4.3 million shares were traded that day, the third most so far this year.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average component has a 97 IBD Composite Rating. Its Earnings Per Share Rating of 99 is the highest in the insurance industry group. The Accumulation/Distribution Rating of C- shows a mix of buying and selling in the past few months. Longer term, the number of funds holding Travelers increased to 2,893 in the second quarter from 2,664 a year earlier, according to IBD MarketSurge.
The stock is up 30% year to date.
