Frenkie de Jong is currently the most notable player on Barcelona's injury list, after the midfielder picked up a knock in the summer.
De Jong opted for a conservative treatment, a decision Barcelona did not agree with but respected nonetheless.
The Catalans wanted the midfielder to go through surgery. But de Jong's conservative process meant the player has been out longer than expected.

Barcelona will play their second home game of the season at the Spotify Camp Nou on Monday when they welcome Rayo Vallecano for a La Liga Matchday 2 fixture.
Under Hansi Flick, FC Barcelona have started the new La Liga season in excellent form, claiming victories in both opening matches and sitting top of the table. They began with an emphatic 5-0 win away at Elche, then followed that up with a convincing 2-0 home success against Athletic Club, highlighting a potent attack and a reliable defence.
As they prepare for their Matchday 3 La Liga tie, Barcelona face several midfield absences that have forced Flick to reorganise his options.
Gavi is definitely out after suffering a right knee injury in the season opener against Elche; the club are managing his recovery cautiously with an eye on a mid-September return.
Frenkie de Jong also remains unavailable while he continues to recover from a persistent knee problem dating back to the World Cup, with no clear return date yet.

Barcelona new signing Jesse Bisiwu has opened up on how he's settling into life at the club after making the switch from Club Brugge this summer.
The 18-year-old has already caught the eye by scoring twice in a pre-season friendly against Basel and will be hoping he can impress in Catalunya.
Bisiwu named Jules Kounde and Frenkie de Jong as two players who have been looking out for his so far and was quick to respond which asked which player has impressed him most at Barca since he joined.
"Raphinha, without a doubt," he told Het Laatste Nieuw. "I find it incredible how he gives 100% in every training session."
Bisiwu also admitted that it's been a big step up but that he's doing his best to show his skills on the training ground.

After arriving as Barcelona's blockbuster signing of the summer, Rodri is now closing in on his first appearance in a Barcelona shirt.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Spanish midfielder once again trained with the group, and Hansi Flick's coaching staff is working towards giving him his debut against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday.
Barcelona are preparing for their first league match at the Spotify Camp Nou, and Rodri's potential introduction would add extreme excitement to a fixture that already carries plenty of importance.
As such, Rodri has now completed consecutive sessions with the group, suggesting his integration is progressing as planned.
With Frenkie de Jong the only first-team player unavailable through injury, Flick had almost his entire squad at his disposal as preparations for Athletic Bilbao continued.

Just when Frenkie de Jong's future at Barcelona appeared to be dominated by questions over his injury, Manchester City have entered the picture.
According to Jose Alvarez Haya on El Chiringuito TV, the Premier League side has enquired about the Dutch midfielder and want to explore the possibility of signing him this week.
It must be remembered that De Jong's situation has become complicated in recent weeks.
He is currently recovering from injury, his decision to pursue conservative treatment has created concern within the club, and he has dropped out of Barcelona's captaincy group.
Now comes interest from Manchester City, who are looking to fill the void made by Rodri's departure, and while Ayyoub Bouaddi is expected to arrive, the Premier League club may still want a more experienced presence.

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has moved to shut down any and all speculation surrounding an alleged strained relationship between he and midfield star Frenkie de Jong.
The name of Dutchman De Jong has of course taken its place front and centre in the media chatter surrounding Barcelona once more over the last couple of months.
After the former Ajax man played full part in the Netherlands' campaign at the World Cup, his return to base in Catalunya's capital revealed a serious knee injury. De Jong, in turn, was ruled out for the opening months of the upcoming campaign.
The situation as a whole was at the time reported to have gone down extremely poorly behind the scenes at Barcelona, with De Jong accused of poor decision-making and judgement of his own wellbeing.
Murmurs of a tense rapport between the 29-year-old and his manager, in turn, quickly began to spread, too.

Rodri has made his preference unambiguous: Real Madrid or nothing, according to Diario AS, with Barcelona's recent enquiry failing to register as a genuine alternative in the Manchester City midfielder's thinking. The Spanish newspaper reports that the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner is unfazed by the Blaugrana's interest and has a singular desire to return to his home city and play in white.
Rodri has not been coy about his intentions. Speaking publicly earlier in the saga, he made clear that declining an offer from one of the world's best clubs was not something he was prepared to do, and that the door on his end remained open. That has not changed since Barcelona entered the picture.
Diario AS report that despite an evident on-field chemistry with several Barcelona players through the Spain national team – Pedri and Lamine Yamal among them – Rodri has given no indication that Camp Nou holds any appeal. The only shirt he is thinking about is Real Madrid's. Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich had also been linked at various points, but both pulled back from a move once it became clear he wanted the white shirt, according to Goal.
Barcelona's interest, per Goal citing Cadena SER, has not yet progressed to a formal approach to Manchester City. Barcelona made contact with Rodri's entourage but have yet to speak to City directly. Frenkie de Jong's injury sparked Barcelona's interest in Rodri, though the Catalan club have since learned where his priority lies. Barcelona's focus remains on completing the signing of Cancelo and a striker following Robert Lewandowski's departure, and Goal notes that after spending 110 million euros on Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi and Jesse Baesio, finding a further 75 million euros for Rodri would be very difficult.
The awkward reality for Rodri is that his preference is not yet matched by equal enthusiasm from Los Blancos. Diario AS reported earlier in the year that Rodri did not feature in the club's future plans, and The Times noted that interest at the Bernabéu had cooled, with concerns about his fitness underpinning the hesitation.

FC Barcelona are closely following the situation surrounding Rodri, with the club ready to act if the Manchester City midfielder's expected move to Real Madrid falls through, reports AS.
While Real Madrid remain the frontrunners to sign the Spanish international, the Blaugrana have positioned themselves to take advantage of any unexpected twist in negotiations involving the player, Manchester City and their domestic rivals.
Whether prompted by Frenkie de Jong's injury, Rodri's outstanding World Cup performances, or simply the opportunity to disrupt Real Madrid's plans, Barcelona have informed Manchester City that they want to be kept updated on the midfielder's contractual situation.

Barcelona's midfield situation has changed considerably over the last few weeks. Frenkie de Jong's injury has left Hansi Flick with fewer reliable options in the double pivot, while Marc Bernal is still returning from a lengthy layoff and cannot immediately be expected to carry a full workload.
Pedri remains an automatic starter and Gavi has proven that he can play alongside him, but the depth behind them suddenly looks far less secure than it did at the beginning of the summer.
There have also been rumours that Flick had already begun losing some trust in Frenkie towards the end of last season. The Dutchman reportedly did not manage his previous injury particularly well and continued playing during a World Cup year despite not being fully fit.
That was said to have frustrated Flick, who began trusting Gavi more during the closing stages of the campaign. Frenkie has still travelled with the team for pre-season, although some have interpreted that as Flick wanting him to recover under the club's supervision and, in a way, holding him accountable for how the situation was handled.
With Barcelona still expected to complete more business before the transfer window closes, another midfielder may now have become a genuine necessity rather than a luxury.

Barcelona were dealt a cruel blow at the start of pre-season when it emerged that captain Frenkie de Jong had suffered a medial collateral ligament tear.
The Dutchman, who played through the injury at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, possibly aggravating it, is expected to be out for four to five months.
De Jong opted against surgery and chose to go with conservative treatment to give him the best chance of returning to the pitch as early as possible.
Regardless, for Barcelona and Hansi Flick, he is set to be a huge miss, as the club not only lose one of the best midfielders but also a leader on the pitch.
Now, according to Gonzalo Tortosa on El Chiringuito TV, the Catalan club are exploring midfield options to replace the injured Dutchman.

FC Barcelona have unveiled their away kit for the 2026/27 season, developed together with Nike and the Kobe brand. The new shirt represents the second chapter of a growing collaboration that highlights a shared competitive mindset.
The shirt and the entire collection combine a black base with a gradient fading into purple at the bottom, along with gold details and graphic elements linked to Kobe Stealth, the identity of the Kobe Bryant brand.
Among the standout details are a print inspired by snakeskin texture, the FC Barcelona crest with an iridescent finish, the Kobe logo on the chest, and a Kobe Bryant quote hidden inside the collar that captures the 'Mamba Mentality': "Leave the game better than you found it".
The launch campaign features players such as Pedri, Gavi, Frenkie De Jong, Alejandro Balde, Ewa Pajor and Patri Guijarro, among others.
The garment has only been presented as a commercial product; its official debut on the pitch has not yet been confirmed. It will arrive during pre-season, coinciding with the first-team's opening fixtures.

Barcelona have a very talented midfield filled with La Masia graduates, and one of them with a very high ceiling is Marc Bernal.
The 19-year-old Spaniard was one of Hansi Flick's first bets when he joined as manager of the Catalan club, but an ACL injury prevented him from gaining as much prominence as some others.
The Spaniard made a successful return last season and had a spell where he was one of the team's best midfielders.
With Frenkie de Jong out injured for the foreseeable future, Bernal could get an extended run of games at the start of the new season.
Speaking in an interview with AS, the 19-year-old midfielder made it clear that his long-term future lies at Camp Nou while also discussing his recovery from injury, Barcelona's ambitions and his hopes for the new season.

Barcelona have gone to the market to search for a new central midfielder after Frenkie de Jong was ruled out long-term with an MCL tear sustained during the World Cup, according to transfer expert Matteo Moretto. The Dutch international will miss a significant spell, leaving Hansi Flick short in the middle of the park as the new LaLiga season approaches.
The injury alone would be enough to trigger a reassessment of Barcelona's midfield resources, but de Jong's relationship with Flick has also grown strained following several incidents in recent months. That context matters: even before the ligament damage was confirmed, there were already questions about what role, if any, de Jong would play in Flick's plans going forward.
Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong during a match.
The combination of a long-term absence and a fractured working relationship means Barcelona may not simply be filling a gap until he recovers – they could be planning for a more permanent realignment of the midfield.
Marc Casadó could be an in-house option to earn more minutes, but he does not appear to be part of Flick's plans either. Separate reports indicate that Barcelona have set a new asking price for Casadó and that the club has been told to listen to offers for him – hardly the sign of a player being earmarked as a stop-gap replacement.

According to a report from Matteo Moretto (as captured by Sport journalist Jordi Carné), former Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka might be trying to capitalize on the recent injury to Frenkie de Jong and has offered himself to his old boss, Hansi Flick, and FC Barcelona:
In recent hours, for example, FC Barcelona has received an offer worth considering. According to Matteo Moretto on "La Pizarra de Quintana," Leon Goretzka, a free agent after his contract with Bayern Munich expired, has made himself available to the Blaugrana club. The midfielder's entourage—he played a supporting role for the German national team at the World Cup—has expressed openness to joining the Blaugrana project following De Jong's tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee.
This isn't the first time Goretzka has offered his services to Barça in recent months.
Do not expect Goretzka to land in Catalonia, though. Carné says that FC Barcelona is not looking to add anything to the central midfield, so Goretzka will have to continue his search elsewhere.
As for where he might land, Goretzka's future could be determined by injuries that occur this summer. As of now, the midfielder is rumored to be focusing on European teams, but could eventually accept a fate that includes MLS.

According to journalist Matteo Moretto (h/t SPORT), Leon Goretzka has offered himself to Barcelona after becoming a free agent following the expiry of his contract with Bayern Munich.
The German midfielder's representatives have made contact with Barcelona's sporting department in recent hours, indicating that Goretzka would be interested in joining Hansi Flick's project following Frenkie de Jong's long-term knee injury.
The Dutchman is expected to be sidelined for around four months after sustaining the injury during the World Cup. This has prompted the manager to request the club to reinforce the midfield if possible.
This is not the first time Goretzka has been linked with Barcelona in recent months.
The 30-year-old midfielder worked under Flick at Bayern Munich between 2019 and 2021, making 64 appearances during the German coach's tenure.

Frenkie de Jong's injury update earlier this week confirmed that the player would miss a big part of the opening of the new season, as he has ruptured the medial collateral ligament of his knee.
The development comes as a massive blow to Hansi Flick's plans, for De Jong has proven to be instrumental as a starter alongside Pedri in recent years for the club.
Having the club captain out to yet another injury blow, needless to say, leaves the club in a relatively tricky situation with only Pedri, Gavi and Marc Bernal left as the options to play in the deep midfield.
Further, it makes the operation of Marc Casado's departure complicated too.
As reported by Mundo Deportivo now, Barcelona have no intention of changing their transfer plans after De Jong's injury and will rely only on internal solutions until he is back.

Frenkie de Jong's future at Barcelona has taken an unexpected twist after fresh reports suggest Hansi Flick is no longer convinced the Dutch midfielder should remain a key part of his plans.
According to Gerard Romero, the Barcelona manager has grown increasingly unconvinced by De Jong's recent performances and overall role within the squad.
As a result, the club could now consider offers for the midfielder if the right proposal arrives before the transfer window closes.
The development comes just days after reports claimed that the relationship between Flick and De Jong had deteriorated, raising questions over the long-term future of one of Barcelona's most experienced players.
The uncertainty surrounding Frenkie de Jong's Barcelona future stretches back to the closing stages of last season, when trust between the midfielder and his manager began to fade.

De Jong has of course taken his place centre stage in the headlines in Catalunya's capital across the evening to date.

According to Javi Miguel of AS, FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has already begun preparing for the opening months of the season without Frenkie de Jong.
There are growing indications that the Dutch midfielder faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines because of a serious knee injury sustained in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Although the club has yet to officially announce the extent of the problem in De Jong's right knee, the outlook is increasingly concerning.
What was initially expected to be an absence of around four months could ultimately prove even longer, forcing Flick to rethink his plans for the midfield.
De Jong was due to report back to Barcelona's training facilities on July 20, but has yet to do so. The delay, combined with the absence of an official medical update, has only strengthened expectations that the injury is more serious than first believed.

Barcelona players returned to the club on Monday for medical checks ahead of the start of pre-season, including Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong who are not due back for training yet after their involvement at the World Cup.
According to Marca, there’s bad news regarding De Jong as he has a knee injury that may see him sidelined for some time.
The report says that the Dutchman is due to undergo further tests in the coming days but there is “great concern at the club.” Barcelona are said to “fear the worst” and there is a suggestion he could be out for four months.
The club and player now face a nervous wait for a final diagnosis to be made and a decision on how much time De Jong will miss to be confirmed.
The loss of the midfielder would certainly be a blow ahead of the start of the 2026-27 season, particularly with Barcelona having so many players still involved at World Cup 2026.

The loss of the midfielder would certainly be a blow ahead of the start of the 2026-27 season, particularly with Barcelona having so many players still involved at World Cup 2026.

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is heading home from World Cup 2026 after his Netherlands team were knocked out in the Round of 32 by Morocco.
Koeman's side went ahead when Cody Gakpo scored the opener for the Dutch side. The forward then couldn't hold back the tears, scoring just days after it was announced he and his partner had lost their unborn son
The goal looked set to send the Netherlands through to the last 16 but Issa Diop popped up with an equaliser for Morocco in the 91st minute to send the game into extra-time.
After a goalless extra 30 minutes, it was onto penalties and victory for Morocco. Both teams missed twice before Ismael Saibari converted the winning penalty to send Morocco through to a last 16 tie with co-hosts Canada.
It's a desperately disappointing defeat for the Netherlands and De Jong. The midfielder will now enjoy some time off on holiday before returning to Barcelona for pre-season.

Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong has this weekend made known his frustration with some of the criticism consistently sent his way by fans.
This comes amid the ******* urance on the part of the midfielder that many are simply not paying close enough attention to his performances.
De Jong has of course long stood as something of a polarising figure in the game.
Whilst many hail the former Ajax talent as one of the standout midfielders in world football, others argue that he is often too passive, and fails to impact proceedings to the extent which his abilities should allow.
De Jong is for his part fresh off a fine individual showing on Saturday, en route to The Netherlands putting five past Sweden at the World Cup.

Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong has hit back at his critics in the wake of the Netherlands’ 5-1 win over Sweden at World Cup 2026.
The midfielder shrugged off some minor physical issues to play an hour in an impressive win for Ronald Koeman’s side.
Afterwards he addressed criticism that he does not contribute enough offensively with some strong words.
“I get the feeling that a lot of people don’t understand anything about football,” he told SBS6. “They watch it, but they don’t see it, so to speak. That’s not a bad thing, because it allows everyone to talk about it, but it’s the truth.
“I hear people say I don’t play through ***** , but that’s not true. They’re simply not paying attention to the game. It depends on the match, but also on the moment. You can play that through ball, but then it always goes to the goalkeeper. Yes, I think some people struggle to understand that. Maybe I should sit down with them sometime . It also depends on the moment itself. Whether someone is running or not, how they’re running…

With the Netherlands facing off against Sweden in their second 2026 FIFA World Cup encounter, Barcelona midfielder and captain Frenkie de Jong has been named in the starting lineup.
This comes despite the Dutch national team’s manager, Ronald Koeman, had expressed doubts about his readiness to play, due to the player suffering from some discomfort around the abdomen.
However, the Barcelona ace has seemingly recovered sufficiently to be included in the starting XI by Koeman – a development that the Blaugrana will be monitoring closely.

Netherlands are ranked only eighth favourites to win the 2026 World Cup, below Spain, France, Argentina, Brazil, England, Portugal and Germany. Depending where you draw the line, they are either the worst of the realistic contenders or the best of the rest.
Yet there is plenty of evidence to suggest that is a pessimistic view of one of the best squads in North America this summer. Netherlands have one of Europe’s form strikers in Donyell Malen, who scored 14 goals in 18 Serie A games since joining Roma in January, much to the surprise of Aston Villa fans. They have Frenkie de Jong, Ryan Gravenberch and Tijjani Reijnders in midfield. And the defence is like something from a Premier League fantasy team.
Virgil van Dijk, Micky van de Ven, Nathan Ake and Jurrien Timber are an elite quartet, and that is before you get to the power of right-back Denzel Dumfries – about to join Real Madrid from Inter as Jose Mourinho’s first marquee signing since returning to the Bernabeu. Chelsea’s Jorrel Hato and Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke add strength in depth.
Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen is developing into a hugely talented player in his own right, but he feels more secure knowing who will be standing in front of him when the Netherlands begin their World Cup campaign, against ***** an on 14 June.
“It makes my life a bit easier, that’s for sure,” Verbruggen says. “As a competitor, you always want to play against the best players but you also want to beat them, and in order to beat them you need the best players on your side as well. And I’ve got the big privilege to be able to play with a defensive line that I think is up there with the best in the world.”

Barcelona are planning to adjust Marc Bernal’s contract to match his growing influence in the first team, according to Mundo Deportivo.
Bernal spent the 2025-2026 season gaining ground under Hansi Flick. He started the year working his way back from a severe knee injury that sidelined him for a while, but the 19-year-old midfielder eventually won a starting spot in the double pivot in midfield. A leg injury and a later ankle sprain halted that momentum, but his form still earned him a spot on Luis de la Fuente’s reserve list for the senior national team, even if he is slated to stay with the under-21s during the FIFA World Cup.
While his fortunes have been on the upswing, things have gone differently for fellow academy graduate Marc Casadó. Flick promoted both players during the 2024 preseason tour of the United States to cover for Frenkie de Jong, but Casadó has since dropped out of favor. In fact, he faces a potential exit to help fund a move for Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva.
Bernal, meanwhile, became untouchable in midfield. He even added a goalscoring threat to his game, netting five times in all competitions, including a brace against Atlético de Madrid in the Copa del Rey semifinals and a close-range finish in the 7-2 UEFA Champions League thrashing of Newcastle United.
However, according to MARCA, the manager has told Bernal he needs to take another step forward and fight for his place again come next season. The manager will have plenty of options in midfield, including De Jong, Gavi, and possibly, Bernardo Silva, to partner Pedri in the midfield trio.
