Dodgers officially make $700M Shohei Ohtani decision with playoff baseball around the corner originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have been getting into postseason form, which is a huge reason why they have been winning as of late. LA can struggle as often as it wants during the season, but once October nears, the team finds its stride.
However, as they get closer to the playoffs, they will be without Shohei Ohtani. It was announced Wednesday night that Ohtani would go on the injured list.
"The Dodgers are placing Shohei Ohtani on the injured list. He must go on the 15-day IL as a two-way player. The earliest he can return is Sept. 23. The wild-card round starts Sept. 29. The NLDS would start Oct. 3. Josue De Paula will likely replace Ohtani as the everyday DH," Dodgers reporter Noah Camras wrote.
When manager Dave Roberts last talked about his injury, there was regret that they had let it drag on as long as they did.

India's road to the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2027 has become much clearer following the recent Tests that were played.
As every match affects the percentage points table (PCT), India still finds themselves in the race, but with very little to spare as they move forward towards the end of the cycle.
In the first of the two Tests that India played against Sri Lanka, the visitors registered a massive 165-run victory in Galle and then aimed to complete a whitewash. However, a valiant performance from Sri Lanka in the final day of the 2nd Test in Colombo helped them to hold the visitors to a draw in the final match of the series.
After a surprise win over Australia in the first Test, Bangladesh succumbed to an embarrassing loss in the second and final match of the series in Mackay. Till date, Bangladesh hold on to the fourth position but India can overtake them if they win the second match.
England moved to the sixth position, replacing Sri Lanka after their 3-0 whitewash win over Pakistan on September 12.

A Dominican Summer League player in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, Belfi Rivera, is at the heart of a deflating story that dropped on ProPublica about young baseball players in the Dominican Republic being preyed on and scammed.
Gus Garcia-Roberts, an investigative reporter who specializes in sports, released the article on Thursday, Sept. 10. Rivera is at the forefront as Garcia-Roberts exposes Santo Caraballo, whom Garcia-Roberts describes as "one of the most notorious moneylenders profiting from Dominican baseball," for receiving $950,000 of Rivera's money despite not having anything to do with Rivera's development.
That $950,000 is part of a $1.8 million deal the Diamondbacks pledged to pay him after he turned 16. Garcia-Roberts also found that these deals are made verbally, so no records can be found if a team decides they do not want to pay the kids.
MLB finds more players in the Dominican Republic than anywhere outside of the United States, so the league sees the country as a hotbed for talent. They work to sell the kids and families on a dream that they can become the next Ketel Marte, Geraldo Perdomo or whichever Dominican star they look up to. Oftentimes, like in Rivera's case, the players and families they talk to come from poor financial backgrounds.
Some takeaways from the story:

Multi-hyphenate comedian, actor and content creator Aaron Branch has big dreams and big ideas. Good thing he has all that storage ******* e upstairs.
Today marks the beginning of Branch's latest stand-up campaign, the Forehead Tour XXL, in Chandler, Arizona. It's been a busy year for the Kevin Langue Show star – this is his second stand-up tour supported by two self-produced comedy specials just in 2026 – but artists with big ambitions don't slow down when their followings are growing even larger than their foreheads.
Most comedy fans who know Branch have seen him on the Rob Lowe comedy series Unstable or dead-center in the eye of the storm on The Kevin Langue Show, a massively popular and mostly improvised YouTube series that combines game show elements with unbridled comedy chaos. Langue just inked a deal to bring his gonzo social experiments to Netflix late last month, and the Kevin Langue Show's massive 5.5-million subscriber count forms a huge part of Branch's own fandom.
But in his solo career, Aaron has branched out into music, long-form sketch comedy and some deeply personal stand-up performances, such as his latest comedy special, The Birth of a Forehead. A fifteen-year comedy veteran, Branch now finds his career expanding in all directions, but, much like his forehead, his body of work can always get bigger.
Shortly before the start of his current tour, Branch spoke with Cracked about his approach to stand-up, his experiences on The Kevin Langue Show and the future of his "forehead-maxxing" journey:

When the Los Angeles Dodgers started the 2026 campaign, their hopes of becoming the first MLB team to three-peat since the '90s New York Yankees dynasty seemed pretty good. While their team features All-Stars scattered throughout their roster, a lot of their strength revolved around their two-way superstar, Shohei Ohtani. Now, just weeks away from the postseason, he finds himself on the injured list.
On this episode of the Baseball Bar-B-Cast, Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman discuss if the back-to-back defending champions fumbled the injury situation with the four-time MVP winner and if Ohtani will be ready for the NLDS. They then get into Los Angeles calling up top prospect Josue De Paula and if his impressive showing in the minors will be able to translate this early in his career to the big leagues.
Later in the show, Jake and Jordan revisit their bold predictions for the 2026 season from March and see how many they've gotten right, which ones are still in play, and which have hopelessly fallen by the wayside. The guys then make their selections for this week's edition of The Good, The Bad and the Uggla before highlighting the importance of baseball on the 25th anniversary of 9/11.

Another week of high school football brought about another week of impressive performances.
After Basha (AZ) linebacker Marc Duerson III was voted Super 25 Playmaker of the Week last week, it's time to have a look at some of the top performers from Super 25 teams in Week 3.
Below are five players who suit up for teams ranked inside this week's USA TODAY Sports Super 25 national high school football rankings and put on massive performances last week. While it says a lot to even make the list, the USA TODAY Sports audience is also invited to vote for who they believe should be named Super 25 Playmaker of the Week.
The fourth-ranked Buford Wolves spent last week hoping they'd get to boost their defense with the addition of Cedar Hill (TX) transfer Jalen Brewster, who ranks as the No. 1 overall prospect in USA TODAY Sports 2027 composite ranking. However, the five-star Texas Tech commit hit an eligibility snag with the GHSA, leaving him off the field in Week 3. Fortunately for the Wolves, they wouldn't need Brewster as Buford took care of business in a 41-7 win over Mallard Creek. In a game that both sides of the ball played well for Buford, it's fitting that one of the Wolves' two-way standouts finds his way on this week's list of Super 25 Playmakers. Buford senior Jameer Cantrell rushed for 16 yards on three carries and hauled in a 27-yard touchdown grab on offense, while also tallying two tackles, an interception and falling on a pair of fumbles in the win.
Don't be shocked if Baylor School running back David Gabriel Georges is a frequent flyer on these Super 25 Playmaker lists. The five-star Tennessee commit helped No. 13 Baylor (Chattanooga, TN) down Rabun Gap-Nacoochee (GA) 51-33 last week to help the Red Raiders improve to 3-0. In the win, Gabriel Georges rushed for 196 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries, including this long touchdown rush:

The US LBM Coaches Poll following college football's Week 1 results was released on Tuesday, with the Florida Gators entering the top 25 after a decisive 66-21 victory over the FAU Owls inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
Jon Sumrall's squad began the season just outside the rankings in the de facto No. 27 spot with 147 votes when the first edition of the poll was released back at the beginning of August. With one-plus week of play now in the books, the Orange and Blue finds itself now tied with the Virginia Cavaliers for the No. 25 spot with 157 votes — both of whom are just seven votes behind the No. 24 Michigan Wolverines.
Next up for Florida are the Campbell Fighting Camels, an FCS program that will travel to the Swamp on Saturday, Sept. 12, for a clash on the collegiate gridiron. Kickoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network+.

Carson Hocevar finds himself the center of attention once again after another messy day at the race track.
With the NASCAR Cup Series at Darlington for the first race of the Chase on Saturday, Hocevar was competing for points that would hopefully push him up the points standings and further into championship contention. Instead, he left with more negative attention, and more frustrated competition.
As the first stage of the race was coming to a close, Hocevar drifted up the track and spun the No. 6 of Brad Keselowski. Watching the replay, it is extremely, extremely clear what happened. Hocevar simply gets into him.
After the race, in which Hocevar finished 11th, the No. 77 driver dismissed the contact he made with Keselowski.
"Yeah he spun," he said smiling, when asked about the incident. "I don't know what happened. He spun."

It was a tumultuous night for William Byron at the Darlington Raceway in the Cook Out Southern 500. The driver of the No. 24 was forced to exit the race prematurely in the final stage after his engine expired, resulting in a 37th-place finish.
Byron, who has failed to win in 2026, entered the NASCAR Cup Series Chase 13th in the standings. Following a tough result on Sunday night at Darlington, the Hendrick Motorsports driver finds himself at the bottom of the Chase in the 16th position.
Moments prior to Byron's motor blowing, the North Carolina native triggered a caution after spinning out due to a tire failure.
Byron was having a solid run at "The Track Too Tough to Tame" for most of the evening. The 28-year-old placed ninth in Stage 1 and eighth in Stage 2, aiming to put together a quality run to kick off the Chase. Yet, things were going well until they weren't.
Byron's tire failure happened during the final stage as his Valvoline Chevrolet went sliding through turns 3 and 4, which brought out the caution on Lap 315. On the subsequent restart, Byron suffered an engine failure, forcing him to take his HMS machine behind the wall.

MIAMI — Even when Javier ****** ad doesn't possess his best command, the right-hander finds a way to put the Chicago Cubs in position to win.
Assad worked around a season-high five walks as he grinded through 4 2/3 innings Saturday against the Miami Marlins, ultimately limiting enough damage in the Cubs' 6-5 win at loanDepot Park. Ryan Zeferjahn threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings to earn his first save as a Cub.
The victory ****** ures the Cubs will maintain their hold of the National League's first wild-card spot over the Philadelphia Phillies as they go for the sweep Sunday with right-hander Clay Holmes on the mound.
"I try to stay calm and under control and work my game, and I've got the best defense behind me, and I let them work, and it came up huge," Zeferjahn said. "The biggest thing for me, honestly, is not chasing strikeouts. Like I said, I've got the best defense, and when you get a one-pitch out to start the ninth inning, so much weight's off your shoulders right there. So just focusing on that and then stay in the attack mode after that."
Making his first big-league start in a month, ****** ad gave up three hits and three runs, one of which scored when reliever Caleb Thielbar immediately surrendered a two-run home run to Griffin Conine, the first batter he faced.

Lane Kiffin's first stadium entrance at LSU went about as we all expected.
Kiffin always finds a way to make himself the center of attention, and that wasn't too difficult with College GameDay in town and the eyes of the college football world descending on Baton Rouge for Saturday night's game against Clemson.
In classic Kiffin fashion, he was flanked by several celebrities from the state of Louisiana as he entered Tiger Stadium, including former LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne, comedian and podcaster Theo Von and model Brooks Nader. They likely won't be the only celebrities we see on the sideline Saturday night.
LSU signed up for a circus when it hired Kiffin, and they're certainly getting what they paid for. Kiffin's track record at Ole Miss speaks for itself, but he has also introduced plenty of potential distractions.
We'll see if the star-studded stadium entrance is just a corny moment before a big win or a sign of a lack of focus.

Lea Salonga has spent decades giving some of Disney's best-known heroines their singing voices. On Friday, Hollywood finally put her own name in the pavement, with several performers who understood exactly how far that voice had traveled standing beside her.
Salonga received the 2,855th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on September 4, becoming the first Filipina to receive the honor. Her star was dedicated in the Live Performance category outside the Pantages Theatre, where Brandy, Ming-Na Wen and Darren Criss joined her for the ceremony, according to BroadwayWorld. H.E.R. was also among those in attendance.
Brandy connected Salonga's Broadway career to the millions who first knew her as the singing voice of Princess Jasmine in Aladdin and Mulan in Mulan. "There are singers who reach notes. Lea reaches hearts and souls," she told the crowd, later describing Salonga as someone who had "left the doorway open" for the artists who followed.
Salonga looked toward the next person instead. Recalling the little girl in the Philippines who simply loved to perform, she said she hopes a young Filipino child eventually finds her star in Hollywood and thinks, "Oh, maybe I can get here too."
Brandy's tribute centered on what Salonga's voice represented before many young viewers even knew the name of the performer behind it. Through Jasmine and Mulan, she said, Salonga gave children who had felt outside the fairy tale a way into it.

Starting statin therapy shortly after a type 2 diabetes diagnosis may not only protect the heart — it may also be linked to a lower dementia risk.
A large study presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Munich on Aug. 30 found that adults who began taking a statin within one year of their type 2 diabetes diagnosis had a 15% lower relative risk of developing dementia over 10 years compared to those who did not take the medication within five years.
Even for those who delayed starting a statin for one to five years, there was still a 10% lower relative risk, according to the findings, which were published in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe.

"It's pretty simple: I win. Google me." That was the first soundbite from the first press conference after Curt Cignetti was named the Head Coach of Alabama football. And in his first two years at Indiana, that's exactly what he's done.
Cignetti immediately turned the program around in year 1 and won 11 games and was selected for a College Football Playoff berth in 2024. The encore in 2025 was something that no one could have seen coming – a perfect 15-0 season with a Big Ten Championship and a National Championship – except maybe Cignetti himself.

Pablo Torre, the journalist whose reporting led the NBA to crack down on the Los Angeles Clippers for circumventing the league salary cap rules, said he is not done with the story.
"There is more to come than is in the NBA report,'' Torre said Wednesday, Sept. 2 during his podcast, Pablo Torre Finds Out. "This is not everything.''
Torre, 40, and his two co-hosts did not provide specifics. But Torre did offer a couple of hints while pointing to the findings of an investigation conducted by referring to a law firm hired by the NBA, Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz
The investigation has centered one player, Kawhi Leonard, and how the Clippers funneled him money in violation of the league's salary cap rules after signing him in 2019, according to a summary of the law firm's investigation. Torre cited mention in the summary of an unidentified second player.
Torre also pointed out the investigation findings did not include Dennis Wong, the Clippers' co-owner. Steve Ballmer, the team's controlling owner, has been suspended from all league and team activities for a year.

Ryan Reynolds, best known for playing the wisecracking superhero Deadpool in the Deadpool franchise, is about to hit a major milestone. During a recent interview, the Mayday star turned the conversation about ageing into a joke, leaving Kenneth Branagh to play along with his unexpected claims about cosmetic work.
Reynolds, who turns 50 in October, appeared with his Mayday costar Kenneth Branagh during an interview with Entertainment Tonight. When Ryan Renynold was asked, "You have a big milestone birthday coming up this October," he answered, "I do. I can say it: 50!" Then, while talking about his face, he pointed at it and joked, "This is scaffolding."
He then took the joke further, saying, "I had my lips done this morning and at lunch."
Branagh, 65, quickly joined in, suggesting that the alleged work had gone well only after a second attempt. He joked that "they got it right" on the "second" try.
The two actors are currently promoting Mayday, an action-comedy set in 1980s Russia. Reynolds plays Troy, a U.S. Navy pilot who becomes stranded in the Soviet Union after his plane is shot down. When he wakes up, he finds himself tied to a bed and under the control of Nikolai, a former Soviet spy played by Branagh.

The NBA has stripped the Los Angeles Clippers of five first-round draft picks and fined owner Steve Ballmer $30 million at the conclusion of its probe into alleged salary cap circumvention with Kawhi Leonard.
The league is also fining Leonard $700,000.
The NBA announced the decision Wednesday.
The decision comes months after journalist Pablo Torre unveiled the possible violation during an episode of his podcast, "Pablo Torre Finds Out." During the program, Torre revealed an agreement between Leonard and a now-bankrupt company called Aspiration, in which Ballmer was heavily invested. The agreement paid Leonard $28 million to essentially do nothing. Ballmer was accused of using the $28 million deal as a way to circumvent the NBA salary cap and give Leonard more money to sign with the franchise.
On the day the story originally broke, the Clippers and Ballmer denied any wrongdoing, issuing a statement denying the allegations made by Torre.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has opened an investigation into scoreboard manufacturer Daktronics on Wednesday in relation to an alleged sponsorship deal the company had with Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard.
Daktronics acting CFO Howard Atkins revealed the investigation on an earnings call on Wednesday, and said that they have received requests for information from the NBA. Specifics of the SEC's investigation are not yet known. It marks the first public acknowledgement that the NBA is including Daktronics in its investigation into Leonard and the Clippers.
"As you might expect, we have received requests for information from the NBA. Additionally, the Securities and Exchange Commission is seeking information from us concerning the company and Mr. Leonard," Atkins said. "We take these requests seriously and are cooperating. At this point, out of respect for the respective processes, we will not be providing further comment."
Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers have been under scrutiny and an NBA investigation for nearly a year after an alleged no-show sponsorship deal with the now-defunct sustainability company Aspiration. That deal reportedly paid Leonard million for no visible work in an alleged bid to circumvent the NBA's salary cap.
A report last month from "Pablo Torre Finds Out" claimed that Daktronics also hired Leonard to a multimillion dollar sponsorship deal that didn't result in any work from Leonard. Daktronics built the $100 million video board at the Clippers' Intuit Dome.

Another Premier League season is officially underway, and despite the usual dose of high hopes for Chelsea, the flagship football club finds itself embroiled in more uncertainty than it ever expected.
Minority stakeholders Mark Walter and Todd Boehly, who own a combined 26 percent (13 percent apiece) of Chelsea, are reportedly in talks to sell their shares to Clearlake Capital, which already controls around 61.5 percent of the franchise. To be sure, the talks between Boehly and Clearlake, specifically, are not new. The sides have discussed an ownership stake exchange in the past, albeit to no avail.
This time around, however, another is added to the equation: Walter, who recently sold the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers and also owns MLB's Los Angeles Dodgers, is under federal investigation for misreporting what's known as related-party loans among his own business ventures. Though nothing has been finalized, Walter's dilemma injects previously unheard-of urgency into the equation.
The news is another blow to Chelsea fans who have grown to distrust the current ownership regime. Their skepticism is not without merit, either. Just as sports betting enthusiasts will search "Is Betonline legit" when shopping around for a place to make wagers, they along with the EPL at large probably need to be wondering whether this Chelsea ownership group is, in fact, built to lead the club into the future.
While Walter's current legal situation raises all sorts of red flags as purchase talks continue, this is far from the first time these parties have found themselves battling murky circumstances.

Peyton Watson is widely regarded as one of the most promising young wings in the NBA. Although this year's offseason was marked by prolonged contract talks and the inevitable drama that follows, Watson now finds himself in a new environment after being traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
While joining the Cavs could be a phenomenal opportunity for Peyton Watson, it is worth acknowledging his time spent with the Denver Nuggets. Having established himself as an elite two-way player over the 2025-26 season, Watson's credibility as a versatile defender undoubtedly boosted his overall stock.
Because of his ability to guard multiple positions, Peyton Watson has often faced some of the league's best offensive players. Thus, when asked who he considered the toughest player to guard on a recent episode of the "Curious Mike" podcast with Michael Porter Jr., Watson had to give a shout-out to one of the league's most creative scorers.
"Definitely, Kyrie Irving is on top of that list," Watson stated. "Bro, because you can literally just play perfect defense and he's just a basketball savant. He's got the most sophisticated and most refined game that I feel like I've ever seen."
"That's one of those guys that you look at and say, and I use this all the time, but the best of the best, bro, their talent is in their fingertips," Watson continued. "It's like he touches that ball, and he's just like a painter with an open canvas, and they're just out there playing like it's art, and Kyrie's one of those guys. Super tough to guard."

The FIBA World Cup is a very big deal in women's basketball, and it only comes around every four years, so you'd like for it to work smoothly. That is hardly the case for the event that begins on Friday in Berlin.
The timing, as it relates to the WNBA, is absurd. Here we have a nine-day tournament that finds the WNBA suddenly going dark near the end of its regular season, then resuming with only four games remaining per team.
The Valkyries' season goes on pause on Sunday (against Portland) and doesn't restart until Sept. 18. That's nearly a three-week break for the league's hottest team - all the while uncertain about their playoff opponent, with the seedings still to be determined.
They'll have four players engaged in the World Cup: Gabby Williams and Janelle Salaün (France), Cecilia Zandalasini (Italy) and Miela Sowah, a development player who has appeared in just five Valkyries games but was recently added to the Australian team.
Conveniently, the WNBA's eight-team playoff group is locked in, so that's one inconvenience out of the way. Certain teams and players could certainly use a break, but the league is understandably worried about injuries and, especially in the Valkyries' case, hard-earned momentum gone stale.

Above a Methodist church at the end of a row of terraced housing, north of Rochdale town centre, Craig Kirby's phone is buzzing as he opens the door to his gym. The 50-year-old's latest TikTok video has just crept over 85,000 views.
It shows a personal highlights reel from one of his amateur football matches, filmed from the touchline by wife Lindsay, with a caption explaining how Kirby finds **** e and time on the bobbly park pitch. "Fitness and movement off the ball are 90% of the game," the text adds.
Kirby smiles at the video going viral. It has racked up more than 340,000 views by the time of writing, but it is nothing new.
The one pinned to the top of his profile has been seen 2.9 million times. It's a compilation of him playing for Whitworth Valley against Old Rivingtonians on a drizzly January afternoon, a backdrop of rolling Lancashire hills and a kids' playground, a simple **** le of: "Well beaten today. Not bad for 50 though."
That is one of his earliest videos from the beginning of last season - since then he has continued to post regularly across TikTok and Instagram, where the midfielder's 'Football at 50' profile has about 30,000 followers on each.
