Jalen Duren had plenty to talk about Saturday during a celebration in his hometown. His contract situation with the Detroit Pistons was not one of those things.
Duren returned to Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania, for Jalen Duren Day, an annual community event that included a street being named in his honor. The 22-year-old spoke about giving back and continuing to improve as a player, but according to a report from the event, he declined to comment when asked about his unresolved contract with Detroit.
The decision to stay quiet comes at an increasingly uncomfortable point in negotiations.
Just one day earlier, the latest report on Duren's contract talks detailed ESPN insider Tim MacMahon's concerns about how contentious the process has become. MacMahon said on The Hoop Collective, "But this has been an awfully nasty negotiation. Sometimes these negotiations when they are ugly like this can have long-lasting consequences."
It would be easy to turn Duren's refusal to discuss the contract into evidence that he is finished with Detroit. There is no reporting to support that conclusion.

Following the Cleveland Cavaliers' swift and painful Eastern Conference finals exit at the hands of the eventual champion New York Knicks, an awkward offseason cloud hung eerily in the atmosphere. Not only was there a strong sense of doubt as to whether that iteration of the team could return to that stage from a basketball standpoint, but its future altogether was in question.
Three months later, at least one of those questions has been answered. Donovan Mitchell committed his future to the franchise, signing a four-year, $273 million extension. His running mate, James Harden, agreed to a three-year, $97 million fully guaranteed contract Thursday, sources told Yahoo Sports. And as of Wednesday night, another reinforcement arrived.
In the latest installment of the "Anything but the Knicks" campaign, the Cavaliers reportedly acquired restricted free-agent wing Peyton Watson in a sign-and-trade deal involving the Nuggets and Clippers. Sharpshooter Max Strus was sent to L.A.. and a 2031 unprotected first along with a 2032 second-rounder headed to Denver. Upon joining Cleveland, Watson will sign a four-year, $88 million contract.
(According to sources close to Harden, the veteran, having seen how rival teams in the conference had beefed up, is fully onboard with Watson's arrival and decided to delay his negotiations to give Cleveland the opportunity to upgrade its scoring and defense — while also keen to avoid a previous situation with the Clippers with non-guaranteed money on just a two-year deal.)
We'll get into what this all means for Cleveland shortly, but I can't quite grasp how fascinating this is from a Nuggets perspective. Typically, restricted free agents don't hold much leverage over their incumbent teams when it comes to negotiations (see Jalen Duren, Bennedict Mathurin, Tari Eason, the list goes on). But how and why Watson's situation played out differently is worth mentioning. The whispers of the 23-year-old's unhappiness with how Denver valued him, believing he should have been on par with teammate Christan Braun (earning $25 million annually) grew louder as the offseason dragged on, as well as the list of suitors eagerly waiting in the wings for an opportunity to capitalize. This, in conjunction with the Nuggets' limits on their financial flexibility and desire to generate some breathing room — thanks in large part to oddly matching a $12 million offer sheet for Spencer Jones and a realization of their own ceiling — created an environment in which Watson could land in a desired spot.

If Jalen Duren's negotiations drag on as long as they can, how would that affect Ausar Thompson's potential rookie-scale extension? John Hollinger: I see two dominoes here. First, the Pistons need to know what Duren's number will be on their books in 2028 and 2029 before they can finalize their cap planning and determine their best path for Thompson's next deal. Second, there is an important question of which player they value more, one that will play out rather publicly if Thompson inks an extension shortly after Duren's deal is completed. Of course, it's possible that, as with Duren, Detroit doesn't agree with Thompson on an extension and he becomes a restricted free agent next summer.

The NBA and NBC are bringing the drama this season right from the opening tip.
The NBA season tips-off on NBC on Oct. 20 with a triple-header that includes LeBron James, Jaylen Brown and the new-look Philadelphia 76ers looking to spoil ring night in Madison Square Garden as they face Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns and the defending champion New York Knicks. Plus, we get a showdown of Western Conference powerhouses San Antonio and Oklahoma City, and it all starts with a showdown of two of the game's brightest stars, Cade Cunningham and Jayson Tatum.
This will be the first time that a network has ever broadcast three NBA Tip-Off games, and all of them can be seen on NBC and streamed on Peacock. The news was announced live on TODAY this morning.
It's a star-studded opening day lineup that includes 10 All-Stars and eight All-NBA players from a season ago. Among the players opening the season are the reigning MVP (Shai Gilgeous-Alexander), Finals MVP (Jalen Brunson), Defensive Player of the Year (Victor Wembanyama) and the Coach of the Year (Joe Mazzulla). The official lineup for the opening night triple-header is:
The NBA season on NBC begins with a matinee, a showdown between stars Jayson Tatum and Cade Cunningham, but also a meeting of the East's top two seeds from a season ago — and two teams expected to be near the top of those standings this year. It's a contrast of styles as Boston under Mazzulla will launch as many 3-pointers as any team in the league, while Detroit, with All-Star center Jalen Duren and the slashing-into-the-paint style of Cunningham, tries to dominate inside and work out from there.

DETROIT, MICHIGAN - MAY 17: Jalen Duren of the Detroit Pistons passes the ball against Max Strus #2 of the Cleveland Cavaliers during the first quarter in Game Seven of the Second Round of the NBA Eastern Conference Playoffs at Little Caesars Arena on May 17, 2026 in Detroit, Michigan. Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons are trapped in a summer stalemate. Duren has made his demand. The Pistons have drawn a line.
Who will blink first?Â
Duren, 22, just turned in the best season of his young career, and the Pistons just had their best regular season in many years. If Duren stays and the Pistons move forward, the franchise has a bright future. But it appears both sides are far from seeing eye to eye.
“There’s been zero progress,” NBA insider Siegel said, referring to the ongoing Duren saga in Detroit.” “They don’t view him as a max-level guy … and that’s why the situation is going to continue to drag on. It’s gonna go on to late August, possibly early September, maybe even late September, and then past training camp … I’ve heard nothing about sign-and-trades; the Pistons are not interested in that. And everybody I talk to says Jalen Duren is not going to be taking the qualifying offer.”

Sabonis had season-ending surgery on a partially torn meniscus later that month, and the Kings revisited trade talks surrounding him this summer. Perry visited with restricted free agent center Jalen Duren in early July and explored the idea of a sign-and-trade swap of big men, but the Detroit Pistons balked at the idea of losing Duren for Sabonis, league sources said.

The Brooklyn Nets are at the point in their offseason where not much will be happening between now and when training camp begins in the fall. Brooklyn does not know its entire schedule for the 2026-27 NBA season, but it does know who they will be playing in the preseason and as part of the 2026 NBA Cup where they may have gotten lucky with their scheduled slate.
The NBA announced in the beginning of July what the groups will be within the NBA Cup and the Nets will have a tough slate ahead of them given where they are in their rebuild. As part of being in East Group A, Brooklyn will be facing the Detroit Pistons, Toronto Raptors, Orlando Magic, and Milwaukee Bucks, but there is a chance that the Nets could be competitive within the group.
The Nets (20-62) had the worst record of the five teams in the group with the Pistons (60-22), Raptors (46-36), Magic (45-37) were playoff teams with the Bucks (32-50) potentially making it to the postseason if Giannis Antetokounmpo was healthy for the majority of the season. To that point, Milwaukee traded Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat this summer for a package of players and picks so it seems like they're entering a rebuild of some sort.
Detroit should be the best team in this group once again with Cade Cunningham leading the way, but plenty could be unsettled by the fact that center Jalen Duren is yet another player experiencing the downside of restricted free-agency. Toronto could be better than they were last season if their trade for forward Kawhi Leonard goes through, but the investigation into the Los Angeles Clippers potentially circumventing the salary cap to sign him may not be solved until the season begins.
Orlando appears to be running it back with Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner leading the way for their squad, but Brooklyn has made key moves of its own by trading for Minnesota Timberwolves forward Julius Randle along with signing guard Keon Ellis and center Mo Wagner in free-agency. Ultimately, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Nets finish the NBA Cup with a 1-3 record with the potential of pulling off upsets over the Magic and Raptors.

Over the last several months, as Los Angeles Lakers star guard Austin Reaves neared his opportunity to opt out of his contract and cash in on a lucrative new one, many expected him to stay put. He eventually did by agreeing to a four-year, $185 million deal, but the process didn't come without anxiety.
He admitted that there was a point in the negotiations when he doubted he would end up staying with the Lakers. Indeed, the Detroit Pistons were one team that was "coming aggressively" for Reaves in free agency, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. Detroit finished first in the Eastern Conference last season but needed a little more star power and another legitimate scoring threat in its halfcourt game.
Vincent Goodwill of ESPN reported on "NBA Today" that Pistons superstar Cade Cunningham tried to recruit Reaves to the Motor City.
"Banking on internal improvement has been the thought going back from last summer when they didn't make a big move going into the season," Goodwill said. "They want to see how Jalen Duren and Ausar Thompson and Ron Holland would play together and it led to 60 wins. Now you're thinking Detroit was going to go make a big move this past offseason. Cade Cunningham was very involved in the potential recruitment of Austin Reaves. Austin Reaves re-signed with the Lakers. Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Kyrie Irving -- those were all names the Pistons were interested in. No moves materialized and now they're going to bank on the restricted free agent of Jalen Duren and Ausar Thompson's extension."
The Pistons have made some incremental moves this summer, including bringing in veteran forwards John Collins, Tobias Harris and Taurean Prince and guard Isaiah Joe. But they have largely been left behind in the arms race that has taken place throughout the Eastern Conference over the past several weeks.

If the Detroit Pistons got worse this offseason, then their three best players didn’t get better.
And if they didn't get better in June, July and August, the Pistons aren’t going anywhere in April and May anyway.
Scoff all you want. But Trey Murphy III isn't changing that. LeBron James isn't changing that. Even Kawhi Leonard wasn’t changing that.
Well, maybe Leonard would change that. But not even Leonard – still headed back to Toronto, pending the NBA's investigation into his extra compensation in LA – would take last season's version of Cade Cunningham, Ausar Thompson and Jalen Duren to the NBA Finals this June. (Yes, we’re ******* uming Jalen Duren will be back.)
That version of those three wasn’t ready to play for a ******* le, and if they come back just the same, they won’t be this season either.

Keith Smith: Factoring in the reported contracts for John Collins, Kevin Huerter & Javonte Green and the Gary Harris/Taurean Prince acquisitions, I've got the Pistons at about $42.8M under the luxury tax. That's enough room to give Jalen Duren a 25% of the cap max without going into the tax. — 7/7/2026 x.com
The primary reason the Lakers likely chose Kessler over offering a max deal to Detroit Pistons restricted free agent Jalen Duren is that Kessler is one of the NBA’s best rim protectors. He’s the kind of interior presence a team needs if it’s going to employ Dončić and Reaves on the perimeter as primary playmakers. In 2024-25, Kessler’s last full(ish) season, he contested 7.5 shots per game at the rim, according to NBA.com, which tied for the fifth-most in the league. On those shots, he allowed opponents to shoot just 54.8 percent. Among the 16 players in the league to contest at least six shots per game that season, that percentage ranked third behind only Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren, who were the top two finalists for Defensive Player of the Year this season. In the three full seasons he has played, Kessler has blocked at least 2.3 shots per game. — 7/2/2026 New York Times
The Pistons have maintained their stance that they’re not interested in sign-and-trade scenarios for Jalen Duren and will continue to try to bridge the gap between both sides and get a deal done. Duren and Domantas Sabonis share the same agency, The Team. With Sabonis, 30, naturally looking to compete in the prime of his career instead of beginning a rebuild, and the Kings exploring the trade market for Sabonis, Zach LaVine, and DeMar DeRozan, it’s easy to see why this Duren sign-and-trade scenario would appeal to Sacramento. On paper, however, going from the 22-year-old Duren to the 30-year-old Sabonis, who’s owed $94.08 million over the next two years, isn’t prudent for Detroit. — 7/2/2026 HoopsHype

In a deal that saves the Pistons some money and gives them a trade exception to make a move later if they want, Detroit is trading Caris LeVert to Milwaukee, a story broken by Shams Charania of ESPN and confirmed by multiple reports.
The trade breaks down this way:
Detroit receives: Taurean Prince, Gary Harris
Milwaukee receives: Caris LeVert, two second-round picks
The Pistons will also generate a $15 million trade exception with this deal (which ultimately folds into a larger six-team trade).
For Detroit, this is about freeing up some cap ****** e — they still have to re-sign restricted free-agent center Jalen Duren, and that is going to push them close to, or into, the luxury tax.

We're into the sixth day of NBA free agency, and amazingly, the top names on this list are the ones that were there when free agency started. That's not a shock with the restricted free agents, that's a battle of leverage, and in the case of LeBron James, he is taking his time and letting the market play out.
A few of the top names are off our board — Trae Young, Austin Reaves, Isaiah Hartenstein, Walker Kessler — but a lot remain. Here are our top 10 currently available free agents.
Jalen Duren and his representatives have tried. They met with the Lakers, who called him a player deserving of a max offer, then Los Angeles traded for Walker Kessler, and that took them off the board. They met with Sacramento, and it was leaked how much Duren wanted to play for the Kings (something that met with a few eye rolls around the league). The sides discussed a sign-and-trade, but Detroit shot that idea down, especially with Domantas Sabonis at the heart of any proposed deal.
Duren wants to get paid, reportedly seeking a deal with an average salary north of $40 million a season, the Pistons are thinking mid-$30 million a year range. Duren's camp points to an All-NBA regular-season campaign for the 22-year-old big man, in which he averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game while playing elite defense. However, a playoffs where he largely disappeared in key moments (averaging 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds) hurt his value. In the end, it sucks to be a restricted free agent in the NBA because you have no real leverage. The choices on the board for Duren are ultimately to sign a deal with the Pistons or play for the $9.6 million qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent. But with the Pistons likely offering four or five years, at mid-$30 million a season (five years, $180 million?), that's generational wealth and a lot of money to just leave on the table.
LeBron James, as he has done throughout his career, is now dominating the free agency spotlight — and he is going to bask in it. No decision is expected in the next few days.

Pistons to be heavily impacted by Lakers $130M decision after blockbuster trade originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Los Angeles Lakers have made some incredible moves over the past 24 hours, landing multiple players who can help Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves in the long term.
It's uncertain whether the Lakers want to keep going out there and making the necessary moves to improve on both sides of the basketball court, but they'll have to get creative now with limited money.
From the sound of things, the Lakers were actually interested in making another splash at some point this offseason, with a new report suggesting that they had a lot of interest in making a deal for Jalen Duren.
Because they decided to go after Walker Kessler, there's now a chance Duren will return to the Detroit Pistons due to the Lakers' decision to trade for Kessler.

That makes this offseason a crucial one. Whether it's trades, or free agent signings, the Pistons have to get their moves right.
They're still led by Cade Cunningham and an exciting young core, and they can't take this contention window for granted.
They do have Jalen Duren questions, though, as there have been trade rumors swirling around the talented center.

Could there be mutual interest in a trade that sends star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown to the Detroit Pistons for rising Pistons big man Jalen Duren? Based on what Bleacher Report contributor Jake Fischer has been hearing, while all parties that would be needed to sign on for such a move to happen are not publicly signaling that such a trade might actually go down, there are some rumbles that hint that this might be something to keep an eye on as well.
According to Fischer in a recent video with his Stein Line substack co-contributor Marc Stein, we should not yet discount the possibility. "Would Detroit be interested in Jalen Brown for Jalen Duren?" he asked. "So far, I have been told that the Pistons don't really have interest in signing and trading Jalen Duren at all. But the gap in negotiations is big enough that Duren is out here meeting with (the) Sacramento (Kings) and meeting with the (Los Angeles) Lakers."
"And ... I have been told that Duren has interest in going to Boston in the event that those talks could happen," he added, which would presumably use Boston's $27.7 million Anfernee Simons Traded Player Exception to pull off. "The longer that Jaylen Brown lingers ... out there as being available, I do wonder if Detroit would talk themselves into (saying), 'Man, we can't find a resolution here with Duren; would bringing back an MVP candidate in Jaylen Brown be something that makes sense for us?' I do wonder."
"It's not something that's going to happen tonight," said Fischer. "But if we wake up on Friday and Jalen Duren is still unsigned – and we know how this restricted free agency dynamic can stretch out. All of Josh Giddey and Quentin Grimes and Jonathan ****** inga lasted into September last year."
I'm not saying right now I'm forecasting that either Jalen Duren or Walker Kessler are going to linger that much longer. But I don't see an end point right now. Those sides are far apart, Duren and Kessler himself with (the) Utah (Jazz) and Detroit respectively."

Duren, as The Athletic has reported, is a restricted free agent who is taking meetings with the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings Tuesday with the hopes of finding a sign-and-trade pathway out of town. The gap in negotiations between Duren and the Pistons sparked this strategy, but it remains possible the two sides eventually strike a deal — especially considering the signals sent by the Pistons. Detroit does not have interest in the Kings’ scenario, which would send three-time All-Star Domantas Sabonis their way as a replacement for Duren, according to league sources who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe ongoing deliberations.

LeBron James Lakers exit: Why departure could be blessing in disguise as team opens up cap ***** e originally appeared on The Sporting News . Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here .
LeBron James is the No.1 player in the 2026 free agency class . He's also one of the most gettable.
LeBron will be playing for a new team this season, as tweeted by ESPN's Shams Charania on Wednesday afternoon. His decision completely changes the landscape for the Lakers this summer. While it could appear devastating at first to lose the 22-time All-Star at first glance, it may end up being a blessing in disguise.
The Lakers had some big free agent decisions to make this summer. They've already come to terms on a new four-year, $185 million deal for Austin Reaves . Had they re-signed LeBron, they would have closed the door on using cap ***** e in order to remake the team.
Instead, the Lakers now find themselves with up to $52 million to spend. That gives them the ability to completely flip their roster. As an example, they've been rumored in talks with All-Star big man Jalen Duren . They can now go ahead and give him a competitive offer that the Pistons could balk at matching.

The Los Angeles Lakers' pursuit of an upgraded center rotation is heating up just hours before the official start of NBA free agency. They reportedly have a meeting scheduled with Jalen Duren, who had an All-Star campaign with the Detroit Pistons this season, and it is believed that they will also end up meeting with Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz. Both players will be restricted free agents.
According to Dan Woike of The Athletic, there is another name to add to the growing list of Lakers targets at the 5. That name is Sandro Mamukelashvili, who spent this season with the Toronto Raptors and had a breakout campaign of his own.
"One name has come up from multiple league sources: Toronto forward/center Sandro Mamukelashvili," Woike wrote, referring to players people around the NBA have been linking the Lakers to.
"Mamukelashvili declined his $2.8 million option with the Raptors Monday, with league sources believing he could command $10 million or more in free agency.
"He's coming off a career season in Toronto, when he averaged 11.2 points and 4.9 rebounds over 80 games with the Raptors, making 38.9 percent of his 3.7 3-point attempts per game."

The Los Angeles Lakers reportedly have a meeting scheduled with Jalen Duren, one of the centers who has been linked to them in recent weeks. Duren, 22, had a breakout season with the Detroit Pistons and was named to the NBA All-Star Game, and he averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds a game.
Another starting-level center who has been linked to the Lakers is Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz. He will reportedly meet with teams in Los Angeles once the NBA's free agency period officially begins on Tuesday, and the Lakers will reportedly be one of those teams, according to Evan Sidery.
Of all the centers L.A. has been linked to, Kessler may be the most ideal fit. He will turn 25 years of age in July, and in his four pro seasons, he has established himself as an excellent rebounder and shot-blocker.
He has career averages of 9.5 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.4 blocks a game, and while he played in just five games this season due to a shoulder injury, he showed some very preliminary signs of expanding his offense to the 3-point line, where he hit six of his eight attempts.
Kessler will be a restricted free agent, which means the Jazz have the right to match any offers he receives from other teams. But center Jusuf Nurkić, who played well as their starter while Kessler was out, agreed to a two-year deal on Monday to remain with them, which has to make one wonder if it's a sign that Kessler could leave.

On the eve of the start of NBA free agency negotiations, Jalen Duren reportedly is preparing to test the market. However, the Detroit Pistons remain committed to re-signing the rising star.
The Pistons do not intend to trade the 22-year-old restricted free agent, based on conversations with multiple people who spoke with the Free Press on the condition of anonymity. Duren is reportedly preparing to meet with the Sacramento Kings to open the door for a sign-and-trade, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes. There is a high degree of confidence within the Pistons' organization that Duren will ultimately re-sign with the team.
Duren's camp is also setting up a call with the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, per The Athletic's Sam Amick. Amick reported previously that Duren was prepared to explore sign-and-trade scenarios. The negotiation period starts at 6 p.m. ET Tuesday, June 30.
WELCOME BACK: Kevin Huerter re-signing with Detroit Pistons for 3 years, $27 million
Duren, 22, is coming off of a breakout season averaging 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds on 65% shooting. He co-starred with Cade Cunningham on the best Pistons team in nearly two decades – the franchise's third-ever team to win at least 60 games and first to make the second round of the NBA playoffs since 2008. The team repeatedly has signaled that retaining Duren is a priority.
