Shares of Micron Technology and Sandisk have clocked phenomenal returns over the past year, primarily due to the mission-critical role of the memory chips produced by them for running artificial intelligence (AI) workloads in data centers.
Faster memory chips and larger storage help solve a key bottleneck in AI data centers by enabling the rapid transport of large volumes of data to data center accelerators. As a result, accelerator chips, such as graphics cards and custom processors, don't have to sit idle and waste energy. However, a closer look at the AI infrastructure ecosystem makes it clear that memory isn't the only bottleneck impeding accelerator performance.

The rapid transport of data has created an incredible demand for optical networking components, which use light to quickly transmit massive amounts of data over long distances via fiber-optic cables. Investment banking and brokerage firm Rosenblatt Securities estimates that optical component companies could increase production capacity by 12x between 2025 and 2030.
However, even that won't be enough to meet the booming demand for optical components. Rosenblatt predicts that supply will trail demand by 50% in 2030 despite the massive increase in production through the end of the decade. This explains why optical and photonics components supplier Lumentum Holdings (NASDAQ: LITE) has been experiencing incredible growth in revenue and earnings.

Voya Investment Management, an investment management company, released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter for its "Voya MI Dynamic Small Cap Fund." A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. US Equity markets rebounded strongly in the second quarter of 2026, recovering from geopolitical tensions that nearly pushed the S&P 500 Index into correction territory. Technology dominated the landscape, powered by increasing AI adoption, while industrials benefited from strong capital expenditure. Small-cap and growth stocks outperformed; investors grew selective amid concerns about returns, competition, and regulation. The Fund outperformed the Index, benefitting from stock selection in energy, consumer discretionary, and health care sectors. Overall market performance could become more volatile due to rising costs and increased supply from IPOs and secondary issuances. Additionally, reviewing the Fund's top five holdings could help identify its best picks for 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, Voya MI Dynamic Small Cap Fund highlighted TTM Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTMI), a US-based global manufacturer of mission systems, radio frequency (RF) components, RF microwave/microelectronic ******* emblies, and printed circuit boards (PCBs). Accounting for 1.39% of the portfolio, TTM Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTMI) contributed to the Fund's performance during the quarter. On August 14, 2026, TTM Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTMI) closed at $140.00 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $14.75 billion. TTM Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTMI) posted a one‑month return of 5.13%, while its shares gained 234.77% over the past 52 weeks."
Voya MI Dynamic Small Cap Fund stated the following regarding TTM Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTMI) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"The overweight position in TTM Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTMI), a manufacturer of advanced printed circuit boards, had a positive impact on performance and was primarily driven by risk management reasons. Shares advanced on strong quarterly results and guidance as the company benefited from accelerating AI data-center and defense demand for high-performance computing hardware."
TTM Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTMI) is not on our list of the 40 Most Popular Stocks Among Hedge Funds. As per our database, 64 hedge fund portfolios held TTM Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTMI) at the end of the first quarter which was 54 in the previous quarter. While we acknowledge the potential of TTM Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTMI) as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk. Monolithic Power Systems (MPWR) just picked up another vote of confidence. GF Securities recently initiated coverage of the stock with a "Buy" rating and a $1,706 price target, which is well above where the shares trade today. The reason comes down to one shift that keeps getting bigger. AI chips need power, and Monolithic makes the parts that deliver it. Basically, every new generation of AI chip, from Nvidia's (NVDA) older models to its upcoming ones, draws far more electricity than the last. That power has to be delivered cleanly and precisely, right next to the chip, or performance suffers. Monolithic designs those power components. In other words, as AI chips get hungrier, each one needs more of Monolithic's parts, at a higher value per chip. The company essentially sells more with every step up in AI computing power.
This isn't just a forecast, since it's already showing up in the results. Monolithic reported record revenue of $981 million last quarter, up 48% from a year earlier. The standout was its enterprise data business, the segment tied to AI and data center chips, which jumped 45% sequentially. Demand was strong enough that management raised its full-year growth target for that segment from 85% to a staggering 130%.
Stop Missing Market Moves: Get the FREE Barchart Brief – your midday dose of stock movers, trending sectors, and actionable trade ideas, delivered right to your inbox. Sign Up Now!
The company is also spreading its bets. Beyond AI, it's winning new business in the automotive sector, communications equipment, and pushing into robotics. On the earnings call, CEO Michael Hsing described the shift that the company is going through. He said Monolithic is moving from just selling chips to providing complete power solutions and called it "the highest power density company in the world."
GF Securities isn't alone in its optimism. A vast majority of Wall Street **** ysts covering Monolithic rate it a "Buy." To give you an idea of how bullish the **** ysts are, even the lowest price target of $1,575 is higher than Monolithic's current stock price. The consensus among these experts is broadly the same. As long as AI keeps demanding more power, the company making the parts that deliver it should keep growing rapidly.

Varex Imaging Corporation (NASDAQ:VREX) surged 48.5% to $18.42 on August 10 after Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:TDY) agreed to acquire the X-ray technology company for $18.90 per share in cash. The offer represents a 52% premium to Varex's unaffected closing price and values the transaction at approximately $1.1 billion, including equity awards and net debt.
Teledyne shares slipped just 0.15%, suggesting investors did not view the premium as an immediate threat to shareholder value. Varex closed about 2.5% below the offer, representing approximately 2.6% upside to the deal price. The narrow spread shifts the debate from whether Varex Imaging Corporation (NASDAQ:VREX) was undervalued to whether Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:TDY) can earn an adequate return.
The strategic fit is visible. Varex Imaging Corporation (NASDAQ:VREX) fills specific gaps in Teledyne's imaging portfolio. Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:TDY) has cited anticipated synergies but has not quantified them or disclosed expected EPS accretion or return targets.
Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:TDY) is not paying primarily for Varex's current growth rate. It is acquiring technologies and customer relationships that could deepen its position across medical, security, and industrial imaging.
Varex produces X-ray tubes, flat-panel detectors, photon-counting detectors, high-voltage interconnects, and imaging software used by equipment manufacturers. These components support medical diagnostic systems, oncology equipment, cargo inspection, vehicle scanning, and industrial quality control.

SEOUL, Aug 14 (Reuters) - TerraPower and South Korea's SK Innovation signed on Friday a preliminary global agreement on small modular reactors (SMRs), Seoul's Industry Ministry said, opening a path for the SK Group affiliate to participate in the U.S. company's projects at home and abroad.
The agreement was signed at a meeting in Seoul between TerraPower co-founder Bill Gates, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won and Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan, the ministry said.
The deal gives SK Innovation, the parent of South Korea's largest oil refiner, an opportunity to take part in development of TerraPower's SMR projects in the United States and overseas, the ministry said. It did not disclose financial terms or the scope of any investment.
TerraPower, backed by Gates, is developing its sodium-cooled Natrium reactor project in Kemmerer, Wyoming. The company received a construction permit from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in March and is targeting commercial operation in 2031, the ministry said.
South Korea's Doosan Enerbility said on Friday it won a contract from TerraPower to manufacture key components for the reactor, including the reactor vessel, support structures and internal structures, without disclosing the value of the deal.

Cisco Systems (NASDAQ:CSCO), a global networking hardware and security provider, closed at $113.47, down 8.40%. The stock fell after better-than-expected fiscal fourth-quarter results and guidance, but investors are focusing on margin pressure, even as the stock is still up nearly 50% this year.
Trading volume reached 61.1 million shares, coming in about 137% above its three-month average of 25.7 million shares.
The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) rose 0.65% to 7,799, and the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) gained 0.81% to 26,803. In networking equipment and enterprise communications technology, Arista Networks (NYSE:ANET) fell 3.27% to $203.62, while Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE:HPE) rose 1.75% to $59.82 as investors weighed Cisco Systems' earnings reaction and broader spending trends.
Investors approached Cisco's fiscal fourth-quarter earnings with high expectations for the company. Cisco stock was up 60% year-to-date entering today's trading. While the company delivered record top and bottom-line results, total (non-GAAP) gross margin for the quarter dropped to 66.3% from last year's 68.4%. This decline was partly attributed to the increased cost of components used in AI hardware, such as memory.
AI-related demand remains strong, however. Some **** ysts also noted the decline in gross margin, but suggested that operating margins would expand in fiscal 2027. This expansion could result in profits growing faster than revenue.
That may make today's plunge a good opportunity to at least begin a position in Cisco stock.

President Donald Trump's goal of ending gender-affirming care is not improper and cannot be the basis for quashing a subpoena issued by the Justice Department against a provider of medical treatment for transgender youth, a divided federal appeals court ruled Friday.
The Justice Department announced last year that it had issued more than 20 subpoenas to doctors and clinics that provide gender-affirming care as part of an effort to investigate healthcare fraud. Federal judges have quashed many of the subpoenas as illegitimate efforts to intimidate providers into ending care.
In a 2-1 decision, a panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the efficacy and long-term risks of the treatments are "uncertain," and the president has the power to align the Justice Department's enforcement priorities with his broader policy goals.
"Every President has law enforcement priorities, just as every President has signature policies (often, the former are components of the latter)," Judge Carlos Bea wrote.
Bea, a nominee of Republican President George W. Bush, was joined in the opinion by Daniel Bress, a Trump nominee. They reversed a ruling that quashed the subpoena against telemedicine provider QueerDoc, sending the case back to the district court to consider other arguments.

There are two components to an investment's total return: price return and dividend return. Add those together, and you get the total return.
Most people who invest in the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) treat the dividend as a footnote. Since the current yield on the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF is only 1%, it's understandable.

That hasn't always been the case, though. Over the past century, dividends have provided roughly one-third of the total return for the S&P 500. On a decade-by-decade basis, however, that number has fluctuated wildly.
Here are the annualized price, dividend, and total returns for the S&P 500 for each decade going back nearly 100 years.

Sands Capital, an investment management company, released its "Sands Capital Technology Innovators Fund" Q2 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. In the quarter, global equities rebounded sharply, with the MSCI ACWI posting its strongest quarterly gain since 2020, supported by broad market strength, easing geopolitical tensions, and continued enthusiasm for AI infrastructure. Information technology led the advance, with semiconductor and hardware companies accounting for most of the index's rise. The fund returned 26.9% (net) in the second quarter of 2026. The portfolio benefited from strong gains across memory, software infrastructure, cybersecurity, and other AI-related holdings, although its concentrated exposure to mega-cap chip designers and manufacturers weighed on relative performance as leadership broadened into CPUs, networking, and memory. Vertical software, internet, and financial holdings were modest detractors amid macro concerns and uncertainty over AI disruption. The fund remains focused on critical AI bottlenecks, including compute, memory, manufacturing, networking, and power, while retaining selected businesses that may use AI to strengthen their competitive positions. You can check the fund's top five holdings to learn more about its leading investment ideas for the year.

Aug 9 (Reuters) - Apple has been testing memory chips from China's CXMT across product lines including iPhones and MacBooks, to mitigate a component shortage fueled by the AI boom, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.
Apple held early talks with CXMT, which is China's largest chipmaker by market value, about supplying components with the goal of using them in some devices sold in China, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.
Reuters could not immediately verify the report. Apple and CXMT did not respond to Reuters' requests for comment.
Reuters had earlier exclusively reported that CXMT was considering building a second memory-chip plant in Beijing to boost production.
Laptop makers HP and Acer have started using CXMT memory chips in devices sold outside the U.S. to ease supply shortages, the newspaper said.

Resmed's shares fell by around 7% after the company forecast a softer than expected fiscal year 2027 (FY27) outlook due to suspended ventilator sales, ongoing macro uncertainty and inflation across electronic components and freight.
Releasing its FY26 and Q4 FY26 results concurrently, the California-based sleep apnoea specialist achieved revenues of around $5.65bn in FY26, denoting a year-over-year (YoY) uptick of 10%. Meanwhile, the company reported Q4 revenues of $1.46bn, indicative of a 9% uptick YoY.
Resmed's CEO, Mick Farrell, highlighted that Q4's "strong" results reflected "continued momentum" for its global business, sustained product demand and "disciplined" execution of its ongoing strategy.
The company's Q4, however, was marred by a correction and subsequent Class 1 recall from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in July for certain of its Astral 100 and Astral 150 ventilators.
Citing other factors including fuel and freight costs, and ongoing macro uncertainty, Resmed now expects FY27 revenue to land in the $5.75bn to $5.85bn range, coming in below ******* ysts' expectations of $5.92bn, according to data compiled by the London Stock Exchange (LSEG) group and seen by Reuters.

Commercial **** e and defense equities continue to draw investor attention, but CNBC's Mad Money host Jim Cramer took a cautious stance on higher-risk plays in the sector on August 5. When asked about Rocket Lab Corporation (NASDAQ:RKLB), Cramer dismissed the stock as speculative while steering investors toward Voyager Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:VOYG):
Pure spec, that's the problem. It's a pure spec. I like that Voyager. We had that fella on last night, Voyager… I like the Voyager.
Cramer's preference for Voyager Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:VOYG) follows its second-quarter earnings report, which he reviewed during the August 4 episode after interviewing management. Cramer highlighted the expanding government defense contracts, sequential revenue acceleration, and a growing backlog and said:
When you look at this phenomenal run in Voyager Technologies, the **** e and defense company that makes key components for satellites, missiles, and **** ecraft, it's been racking up government contracts left and right. Last night, Voyager reported a very strong quarter with revenue up 51% just versus the previous 3 months, a narrower-than-expected loss, and the backlog jumping 22% sequentially. That's versus last quarter, not last year. Management said that demand is building faster than they can convert it into revenue. High-quality problem. They also raised their full-year revenue forecast pretty substantially. Some of that's thanks to the recent acquisition of Astrobotic. That's a **** e robotics play... The stock jumped 14% yesterday even before the quarter and then rallied another 19.6% today in response to these results, although it's still down roughly 55% from its post-IPO highs last summer. So maybe you haven't missed as much as you might think.
It is worth noting that data tracked by Insider Monkey shows shifting hedge fund sentiment between the two **** e companies entering 2026. Elite hedge fund holders in Rocket Lab Corporation (NASDAQ:RKLB) declined from 45 in the fourth quarter of 2025 to 43 in the first quarter of 2026. On the other hand, hedge fund ownership in Voyager Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:VOYG) expanded during the same period, rising from 35 holders in Q4 2025 to 37 in Q1 2026.

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) just announced an acquisition that could give major competition to NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) in AI-inference. On August 6, AMD said it has agreed to buy chip startup Taalas as specialized inference chips become a critical area of focus for semiconductor makers. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
The company plans to integrate Taalas' technology into its accelerator roadmap and develop system-level solutions combining it with AMD Instinct graphics processing units (GPUs).
"AMD is building a full-stack AI platform that gives customers the flexibility to deploy the right compute solutions for every AI workload," Vamsi Boppana, senior vice president of AMD's Artificial Intelligence Group, said in a statement.
The acquisition strengthens AMD's AI portfolio by offering it differentiated inference performance and efficiency. The move also highlights the rising importance for leading GPU makers to offer integrated systems with several different components and chips rather than standalone processors.
The acquisition itself follows a string of smaller inference-focused deals made by AMD. Back in November, the company acquired MK1, an AI software startup specializing in high-speed inference. It also acquired MEXT in June and added FastFlowLM to its artificial intelligence group in July. Together, these moves may strengthen AMD's AI inference capabilities to compete with giants such as Nvidia.

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) CEO Tim Cook just passed his successor an absolute mess. Cook steps down on Sept. 1 from his role as CEO but will remain on the board. In his place, John Ternus will ****** ume the role of CEO. However, the situation Ternus is taking over isn't a pretty one.
What's going on with Apple that caused this problem? Rising commodity prices.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
During Cook's last earnings call, he stated that rising memory chip prices are undergoing a "100-year flood." Essentially, ****** ody could have seen this coming, and the effects could be disastrous. He noted that Apple already had to raise prices on some products, but it may not be able to stop at just a few product lines. If prices continue to rise, it could force Apple to raise prices again, alienating some of its consumer base, which is already stretched thin.
However, Cook noted that it is decreasing costs on other components that help offset rising memory chip prices. We'll see how this pans out, but if prices continue to rise, it could get ugly for Apple and cause John Ternus to deal with a crisis just a few months into the job.

Investors often weigh the potential of a retail recovery against the stability of defense contracts. Comparing Advance Auto Parts Inc (NYSE:AAP) and BWX Technologies Inc (NYSE:BWXT) reveals two distinct strategies for long-term growth.
Advance Auto Parts provides essential vehicle components to a wide range of customers, focusing on operational improvements to drive value. BWX Technologies serves critical defense and energy needs through nuclear innovation and government partnerships. While one targets a consumer turnaround, the other capitalizes on specialized industrial demand and expanding government budgets.
Advance Auto Parts sells automotive replacement parts, accessories, and maintenance items to both professional installers and do-it-yourself customers. The company operates thousands of stores across North America and recently expanded an AI-powered delivery partnership with OneRail to improve fulfillment speed. This strategic focus on professional accounts like local garages and service stations is intended to recapture market share in a highly competitive environment.
In FY 2025, revenue reached $8.6 billion, representing a year-over-year decline of approximately 5.4%. Despite the sales dip, the company managed to report a net income of $44 million, resulting in a net margin of approximately 0.5% for the fiscal year. The company is currently implementing a multi-year restructuring plan to optimize its supply chain, reduce costs, and enhance its competitive position in a fragmented market.
As of its January 2026 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is nearly 2.4x. This metric compares total debt to shareholder equity and indicates a significant reliance on borrowed capital to fund operations. Free cash flow for the year was negative $298 million, defined as cash from operations minus capital expenditures.

Some mobile phones still bear the Nokia name, but it's only licensed by mobile phone maker HMD; Nokia only makes some of the technological components found within modern-day mobile devices. Its big business these days is the networking and connectivity hardware required by cloud computing, mobile carriers like AT&T and Verizon Communications, and institutions.
Continue »
This business is about to get a whole lot bigger, too. Credit the growth of artificial intelligence (AI), mostly. Here's why and who wins.
If you weren't aware, the 5G connection your smartphone most likely utilizes is short for fifth-generation mobile broadband connectivity -- an upgrade from measurably slower previous-generation 4G technology. And it arrived just in time. Thanks to the explosion in artificial intelligence, end users are wirelessly sending and receiving more digital information than ever before. Industry expert Aetha Consulting reports that generative AI traffic alone is driving more than twice as much uplink (from user devices to the network) data traffic as ordinary mobile traffic does.

Aug 4 (Reuters) - ***** eX's ambition to build a full-fledged mobile service rattled investors in the U.S. wireless sector, as the company outlined plans that could eventually pit Starlink against industry leaders Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile.
SpaceX acquired 65 megahertz of wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar for a total of $19.6 billion through two deals announced last year, giving Starlink airwaves to expand into mobile services.
"The spectrum that we purchased from EchoStar does have terrestrial components, so we definitely intend to build out terrestrial," ***** eX President Gwynne Shotwell said during a post-earnings call on Tuesday.
Shotwell said the company will build the infrastructure needed to make Starlink "a true mobile service" and expects to win "quite a few" customers from the Big Three wireless carriers.

Revenue growth of 15% sequentially was driven by strengthening demand for advanced etch and deposition applications supporting AI infrastructure and gate-all-around architectures.
Gross margin expansion of 130 basis points to 14.1% resulted from a structural footprint realignment and improved product mix favoring proprietary components and non-semi business.
Management attributed the Q2 revenue shortfall to isolated part shortages in flow control that were resolved within days of the quarter end, shifting that volume into Q3.
Operational efficiencies in machining and component businesses drove product margin expansion independent of factory utilization gains.
