MILAN (AP) — Cristian Chivu's brand of brotherly love could be just what Serie A champion Inter Milan needs to dominate Italian soccer again this season.
More than a few eyebrows were raised when the inexperienced Chivu was hired last year to replace Simone Inzaghi as Inter coach. The Nerazzurri were fresh off a 5-0 thrashing by Paris Saint-Germain in the most lopsided Champions League final in history.
"Everyone was thinking that Inter was, let's say dying, after what happened," Inter midfielder Hakan Çalhanoğlu said in a recent interview with beIN Sports Australia.
Chivu had only ever overseen 13 matches in Serie A but his fresh approach as a coach and new ideas reinvigorated Inter as he steered the Nerazzurri to the Italian league and cup double.
Moreover, the 45-year-old Chivu's closeness to the players has pulled the team even more together.

Inter will welcome their only target for the midfield before the opener, as they have reached an agreement with Liverpool to acquire Curtis Jones. They have been courting him since the beginning of the summer. While he was immediately keen on joining, concocting the deal took some work, La Gazzetta dello Sport relays.
In the end, the Reds lowered their demands a little. The Englishman is transferring for €30M, plus €5M add-ons and a 10 percent sell-on clause. He'll sign a five-year contract and make about €4M annually.
Jones is the third player signed by Inter coming from the Premier League this summer after John Stones and Djed Spence. Liverpool ultimately granted a small discount to avoid a Bosman departure in a year. The midfielder seemingly only wanted to head to San Siro.
Christian Chivu was one of the main proponents of the deal. He believes the newcomer will be able to play in multiple positions and bring something different to the table. The Nerazzurri also had to move Davide Frattesi to make room.
They might have some sort of cap when it comes to fees and total packages. It's basically the same operation they devised for Spence. They waited patiently for the sellers to get to their numbers, and not the other way around, after convincing the players, which is a testament to their appeal. They'll be a little overcrowded for a season. However, after all, Hakan Calhanoglu, Piotr Zielinski, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan aren't getting any younger. They were almost irrationally fixated on him, considering his role and what he showed in recent years, so they must have a pretty good plan to make him thrive.

Thus far, 2026 has been chastening for the fallen giants of world football. For Italy, it has been the year of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Bodo/Glimt, the Balkan team meaning a third consecutive World Cup took place without the Azzurri, the Norwegian side eliminating Inter Milan from the Champions League. There were other indications of decline – a Champions League table with the reigning Scudetto winners Napoli in 30th or Italy's sole representatives in the last 16, Atalanta, going down 10-2 on aggregate to Bayern Munich – and they combined to paint a bleak picture.
So if Serie A returns with the sense its best days are behind it, some of its historic forces have the same feel. And yet that provided some of the drama last season: two of Italy's three most decorated clubs, AC Milan and Juventus, spurned promising positions to miss out on Champions League qualification. They will instead be the biggest clubs in the Europa League after being leapfrogged by Cesc Fabregas' insurgents from Como. The third of Italy's traditional powers, Inter, cruised to their 21st Scudetto in Cristian Chivu's first campaign in charge; equalling his predecessor Simone Inzaghi's total of Serie A **** les was at least compensation for faring far worse in Europe.
His rivals this year are set to be a mixture of the familiar, with Serie A's capacity to recycle its managers, and an intriguing newcomer. A division where clubs have been starved of funds features two expensive arrivals from Paris St-Germain, charged with bringing goals to the underachievers, and a further influx of English defenders.
Chivu will share San Siro with Ruben Amorim who, in the way Serie A's fortunes have nosedived, seemed the man AC Milan ended up with rather than perhaps wanted, given interest in Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola. It is nevertheless an opportunity the Portuguese did not earn with his wretched spell in charge of Manchester United.
He will presumably import his flagship 3-4-3; whether Luka Modric, who turns 41 next month, wants to be in a central-midfield duo remains to be seen but Milan have backed Amorim by allowing him to make the biggest signing in the Serie A summer: his fellow Portuguese Goncalo Ramos for a club record €74m (£63.3m). It at least should ensure wingers Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic are no longer an ersatz strike duo, even if Amorim's record with centre-forwards was better in Portugal than England.

Inter outcast Davide Frattesi is reportedly on the verge of joining Lazio on a season-long loan. According to Calciomercato, the Italian midfielder is set to sign for the Biancocelesti after the Lega Serie A unblocked his move to the Stadio Olimpico.
Frattesi has been on the fringes at the Giuseppe Meazza over the last two years. However, Inter refused to let him join Atletico Madrid last summer as Cristian Chivu vowed to help the former Sassuolo man reignite his career in Lombardy.
Chivu failed to live up to his pre-season promise, handing the 26-year-old just three Serie A starts in 2025/26. Tired of playing second fiddle to Nicolo Barella, Frattesi requested the transfer at the end of last season, and Inter are about to grant his wish.
Roma and Juventus had been keen on Frattesi, but the player is now one step away from joining Lazio.
Frattesi's contract at Meazza runs out next summer. Therefore, time is not on Inter's side, as they must find a way to cash in on their unsettled star quickly. Allowing him to move to Lazio on loan will reportedly pour around €5 million into the club's coffers.

Inter are planning to triple Francesco Pio Esposito's salary to stave off interest from Premier League clubs, claim reports, after a meeting with his agent.
The striker is a product of their youth academy and had gone on loan to Spezia in 2024-25, so was expected to do the same last term too.
However, after impressing in the summer under new coach Cristian Chivu, it was decided he would remain, turning into a genuine hitman with 11 goals and seven ****** ists in 50 competitive games.

Roberto De Zerbi is looking forward to facing fellow Italian Enzo Maresca when Tottenham take on Manchester City, noting they made friends in the Milan youth academy, so both got to know Franco Baresi.
The coach is starting his first full season at Spurs, having taken over during dire circumstances in March and just about steering them out of the relegation zone.
There is a very Italian feel to the Premier League this term, as not only is De Zerbi at Tottenham, but Maresca replaces Pep Guardiola at Manchester City too.

Lazio have reportedly asked for Davide Frattesi on loan, but Inter still hope Nottingham Forest will buy the midfielder outright, so they can reinvest in Liverpool's Curtis Jones.
The Nerazzurri risk losing out on so many transfer targets this summer because they must sell before they can bring in any new players, and that is proving to be extremely difficult.

Despite several delays in negotiations with Premier League giants, Inter have not pulled themselves out of the race to acquire Liverpool central midfielder Curtis Jones, as coach Christian Chivu deems the English international as his primary target to bolster the central area of the pitch.
Milanese journal La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that with a short window of nearly two weeks before the Serie A 2026-27 campaign kicks off, the Nerazzurri remain hopeful in attaining a complete squad prior to the opening match against Monza.
As it stands, Liverpool remains firm on their €40m evaluation for the 25-year-old midfield starlet, albeit his contract with the Reds expiring in the summer of 2027.
Hence, Inter are seeking to offload former Sassuolo midfielder Davide Frattessi as soon as possible as he is no longer part of coach Christian Chivu's plans and the departure of the Italian international would make room for Curtis Jones to arrive at San Siro.
In the event that Inter struggle to find an appropriate suitor for Frattessi in a short amount of time, the Beneamata would evaluate cashing in on promising holding midfielder Aleksandar Stankovic, whom they just redeemed from Club Brugges after activating the €26m buy-back clause and refusing a lucrative €40m from Premier League oufits Brentford for the 21-year-old rising star.

The transfer market has been largely at a standstill this summer, because with the need to balance the books, Serie A clubs find they must sell before signing new players.
It is hardly a secret that the budgets of the Italian teams pale in insignificance to the Premier League resources, where even newly promoted clubs can out-bid the biggest Calcio giants.
This all means that when they do come to challenging for talent on the transfer market, the focus is on selling in order to fund the reinforcements, so there has to be money coming in before it can go out.

Inter and Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly 'reached a verbal agreement' over the transfer of Argentine defender Cristian Romero. According to ESPN Argentina via Calciomercato, Spurs have accepted the Serie A champions' €40 million bid for their captain.
Despite completing the signing of John Stones, who left Manchester City as a free agent at the end of last season, Inter are looking to add another center-back to Cristian Chivu's star-studded squad. Indeed, the Nerazzurri have parted ways with three defenders this summer and must reinforce their depleted backline.
Francesco Acerbi, Matteo Darmian, and Stefan de Vrij are now part of the club's history. On the bright side, Inter have tied Yann Bisseck down to a new long-term contract and are seemingly set to keep Alessandro Bastoni. Moreover, they've purchased Manuel Akanji after an impressive season-long loan.
However, they want to sign another top-class defender.
Romero has gone from strength to strength since leaving Serie A for Tottenham in 2021. Over the past five years, the 28-year-old has established himself as one of the most dependable center-backs in Europe's top-five leagues, let alone the Premier League.

Cristian Chivu has made it clear that he still wants another winger or wing-back before the end of the summer transfer window, but says that he is pleased with what he saw from the Inter squad after defeating Manchester City in a pre-season friendly earlier this weekend.
The Nerazzurri stopped off in Hong Kong on their way over to Australia while on their summer tour, defeating Manchester City on penalties after a 1-1 draw following goals from Divin Mubama and Benjamin Pavard.
Talking to the media after full-time in South East Asia, Chivu said that the most important thing was that his players came through their test injury free, but admitted that he is still at least one new player in the wide areas.
"If you do the counting, you get the same results as us," Chivu told reporters after full-time against Man City (via La Gazzetta dello Sport).
"It depends on how you look at it. Maybe we're missing one on the left. We have three wingers at the moment, or rather three and a half because Carlos (Augusto) can play there as well. And depending on how we look at Luis Henrique, who can play on the right or left, we're still missing one. There's still a long way to go in the window, we need to be patient and choose well."

Manchester City begin a new era in Hong Kong on Saturday, as Enzo Maresca takes charge for the first time following Pep Guardiola's departure, against Inter Milan.
It's a fitting reunion, given City edged Inter 1-0 in the 2023 Champions League final, though the two sides played out a draw when they last met in the 2024 UCL league phase.
Maresca will be without Erling Haaland for the occasion, with the striker still working his way back into full training following his World Cup run, although Antoine ***** yo will play alongside Joško Gvardiol, Phil Foden and others.
Cristian Chivu enters his second season as the Inter manager but will also be without a few of his stars. Lautaro Martínez and Manuel Akanji won't join the club in Hong Kong following a long World Cup tournament. Martínez's Argentina side fell in the final, while Akanji (who joined Inter from City a year ago) and his Swiss team lost to Argentina in the quarterfinals.

Inter could easily turn a profit on either Petar Sucic or Aleksandar Stankovic if they wished, but the plan is to keep them both at the moment. The former turned heads in the World Cup, landing even on Real Madrid's radar.
According to Vecernji List (via Calciomercato), Los Merengues and a few English clubs are keeping tabs on him, but the Nerazzurri want to have him for the long haul. He scored and ******* isted once during the recent tournament, becoming an indispensable player for Croatia and throwing his hat in the ring to succeed Luka Modric as the fulcrum of their midfield. He's under contract until 2030. His €1.5M salary will eventually need to be ******* ped up.
Inter already value Sucic €50/60M, and it's unlikely any side will lodge proposals that could really tempt them, while Stankovic is worth about €30/40M. His sale would yield a decent-sized 'plusvalenza,' since the Nerazzurri brought him back from Club Brugge for €13M earlier in the summer, La Gazzetta dello Sport relays.
Christian Chivu spoke highly of the youngster during a recent press conference. He'll likely be part of the squad next season, too. In the meantime, there hasn't been any progress in their Curtis Jones chase. New Liverpool coach Andoni Iraola stated he'd like to retain him (via Mediaset).
Since they have already proven their worth, the team is in a good financial position and doesn't have a ton to do in the transfer market, the opposite stance would be counterintuitive, especially given that they have an aging midfield trio, and two of them might have reached the end of the road.

Liverpool's right side has become a live issue again, and there is no point dressing it up. Replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold was always going to be difficult, but the club have not solved it yet. Conor Bradley has had spells of promise, but availability and consistency matter. Jeremie Frimpong has talent, pace and attacking thrust, though he has looked more comfortable higher up the pitch than as a conventional right-back.
That is why the latest report around Anan Khalaili will catch attention. As Marco Barzaghi reported, Inter moved decisively to sign the player and there is already talk of Liverpool being the club he dreams about further down the line. The detail is interesting, even if the timing is not ideal for Liverpool. Inter have done the deal, and for now that closes the door.
Khalaili joins Inter Milan for around €25m plus bonuses, roughly £21m before add-ons are factored in, after making a strong impression with Union SG. He is a right-sided player with clear athletic tools, direct running and the sort of aggressive approach that suits modern wing-back football. He can carry the ball into ***** e, attack defenders one against one and press with intensity. In systems that ask for verticality and constant movement, he makes sense.
The key line in Barzaghi's report was clear. "Inter were extremely determined to sign Anan. They wanted him at all costs," he told his YouTube audience. That does not sound like a club casually adding depth. It sounds like a club targeting a starter for the future.
The report then outlined how the transfer nearly fell apart before the Inter head coach stepped in. "We went through a terrible week. The transfer came very close to collapsing, but then Cristian Chivu took the initiative and called Anan personally." That sort of intervention matters. Managers do not usually make those calls unless they see a specific role for the player.

Inter Milan are pursuing Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumí and have proposed Ebenezer Akinsanmiro as a makeweight in a potential deal, with a €28 million release clause set to expire on 15 July concentrating minds on both sides.
According to TuttoMercatoWeb, citing Corriere dello Sport, the Nerazzurri have already made preliminary enquiries at Bologna and are now ******* sing whether to structure an offer around the young Nigerian midfielder alongside a cash component.
Lucumí, contracted to Bologna until 2027, is left-footed and primarily operates on the left of a back four – not the right-sided profile Chivu has prioritised. However, the Colombian international's pace and comfort with a high defensive line are seen as directly compatible with how Chivu wants to set up, and his established Serie A record eliminates any adaptation risk.
The €28 million release clause expires on 15 July. After that date, Inter believe a figure in the region of €20 million – supplemented by Akinsanmiro as a technical counterpart – could be sufficient to open a serious negotiation with Bologna sporting director Sartori, with Akinsanmiro among the profiles understood to appeal to him.
Trevoh Chalobah remains the Nerazzurri's primary defensive target, as covered in Inter's centre-back pursuit, but Chelsea's insistence on at least €35 million has stalled progress. Lucumí represents a more accessible alternative at a meaningful discount.

A new chapter has begun to fulfill a dream that's been in the making for years: Ivan Provedel is an Inter player.
The 1994-born goalkeeper joins the Nerazzurri after four seasons with Lazio. He spoke to Inter TV for the first time following his move to the Club.
Ivan, welcome to Inter! How does it feel to be here on your first day as a Nerazzurri player? "It's hard to put into words, I'm just very happy to be here."
You've joined a team that won the Coppa Italia and will be looking to defend the Serie A ******* le. How motivating is that challenge?"It's a hugely exciting challenge. Staying at the top is difficult, but it's also the most rewarding thing. I'm here to help the team achieve our goals."
At Inter you'll be reunited with teammates you've played alongside for Italy, while others you've faced as opponents. What are your first impressions of the squad and Cristian Chivu?"They all have an incredible mentality; otherwise they wouldn't have achieved everything they have, including winning two trophies last season. I'm sure the coach is the same. I'll have the chance to get to know him soon, and I can't wait to meet everyone and learn from them."

Petar Sucic has emerged from the World Cup with his reputation enhanced, and the Inter midfielder is now attracting attention from some of Europe's biggest clubs.
According to Croatian newspaper Večernji, via CalcioMercato, both Real Madrid and a number of Premier League sides have taken note of the 2003-born playmaker's displays in North America.
Sucic was among the brightest spots of Zlatko Dalic's Croatia side before their elimination at the hands of Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal.
An ******* ist against England and a goal against Ghana, allied to consistent contributions against Panama and Portugal, prompted the Croatian outlet to single him out for praise and to note that Dalic now regards him as indispensable, a player around whom Croatia's midfield can be built once the Luka Modric era ends.

Inter are on the verge of signing goalkeeper Ivan Provedel from Lazio, with a fee of approximately €3 million agreed and a three-year contract worth €1.5 million net per season ready for the player to sign.
According to Tuttosport via Tuttomercatoweb, Provedel is expected in Milan imminently to undergo medical examinations before putting pen to paper on a deal running through to 2029. The agreement between the clubs has been finalised after a negotiation in which Lazio initially sought closer to €4–5 million before converging on Inter’s valuation.
The move has been in motion for several weeks. As SempreInter reported in June, the Nerazzurri had identified Provedel as their primary goalkeeping target, with personal terms reached before the club-to-club fee was resolved. The process accelerated once Inter cleared their UEFA Settlement Agreement obligations, giving the club cleaner room to operate in the market.
Tuttosport also reveals that Inter had a contingency ready. Had the Lazio talks broken down, sporting director Beppe Marotta’s staff had identified Konstantinos Tzolakis – the 2002-born Olympiacos goalkeeper with Greek international experience – as the primary alternative. Inter ultimately did not need to pursue that route.
Provedel slots in as the experienced backup to Josep Martínez, completing the goalkeeping hierarchy under Cristian Chivu. Yann Sommer’s departure had left the position vacant, and at €3 million for a goalkeeper with top-flight Lazio experience, the Nerazzurri have addressed it at minimal cost. A formal announcement is expected within days once the remaining paperwork is exchanged.

Trevoh Chalobah’s agents are in Italy to hold talks with Inter and Como, but the latest updates point towards the Nerazzurri having the advantage in the race to land the England international from Chelsea. Here’s why.
Inter have already crossed paths with both Chelsea and Como this summer: The West Londoners beat the Nerazzurri to the signing of Italy talent Marco Palestra in June, and though Cristian Chivu’s side had considered reinvesting the funds they had set aside for the right-back on Nico Paz instead, the Argentine has re-committed to Como, at least for the 2026-27 season.
The three clubs are again connected by centre-back Chalobah, who is reportedly of interest to both Como and Inter this summer, both on the lookout for defensive reinforcements ahead of their respective Champions League campaigns in 2026-27.
According to reports from Alfredo Pedullà, Como have already held discussions with Chelsea over the potential signing of Chalobah, whilst the Corriere dello Sport claims that an offer of €30m including bonuses has been turned down. Inter and Como are both aware of the fact that Chelsea are seeking a package of €35m with at least €30m in guaranteed fees.
Various reports suggest that Como are unlikely to satisfy those demands in the near future, especially after spending €60m on the re-signing of Nico Paz. A further €14m has gone on the signing of Kaiki and Cesc Fabregas is hoping to strengthen in several other areas of the pitch, which makes Chalobah start to look a touch on the expensive side.

Inter have retained just one of their veterans whose contracts were expiring, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, while Yann Sommer, Francesco Acerbi, Stefan De Vrij, and Matteo Darmian all left the club on June 30th.
According to Calciomercato, the Armenian midfielder accepted a significantly reduced rate after pocketing €4M last year. He was contemplating retirement but decided to keep going and will earn about half the previous sum in 2026/2027. Instead, the Dutch defender passed on a similar offer and quickly accepted a proposal from Panathinaikos. The two Italians plot to continue playing as well and will weigh their options in the coming days. The Nerazzurri had offered a front-office role to the fullback.
Inter aren’t moving on from their initial plan in the midfield for now. They continue to prioritize Curtis Jones despite the large gap in the negotiation with Liverpool, Corriere dello Sport informs. Nottingham Forest showed interest in him as well, as they are about to sell Elliot Anderson to Manchester City. However, the player prefers the Nerazzurri or, eventually, other sides that will participate in the UEFA Champions League. Christian Chivu directly suggested acquiring him after facing the Reds last season.
Mkhitaryan is set for his fifth campaign at San Siro, following his run at Roma and his Premier League stay at Manchester United and ******* nal. He has notched 12 goals and 21 ******* ists in 187 tilts with the current Italian champions.
It’s interesting that they didn’t make an effort to keep either center-back, as it’ll increase the need to sign two reliable pieces there. Jones is more of a cherry on top to improve the midfield than a real necessity, so it’s fine to stick with that pursuit for a while longer.

In recent days, Inter Milan have been linked with Niccolò Pisilli, who are looking for new signings to raise the level of Chivu's team.
Roma's number 61 wants to play in the Champions League with the Giallorossi and is an important player for Gasperini.
Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio dismissed rumors of Nerazzurri interest in Pisilli: "Pisilli is an exceptional player, but we're not interested. "
"Beyond the enormous respect I have for this player, I can say that there's no interest in him, but not for technical reasons, given that we're talking about one of the best Italian midfielders around."
"This is an evaluation based on his position. We'll be working on other players in the coming days. There will be at least two investments."

Inter Milan have entered the race to sign 2004-born Israeli winger Anan Khalaili from Union Saint-Gilloise, joining Napoli in pursuit of the right-sided attacker who caught the eye against the Nerazzurri in last season's Champions League.
Transfer journalist Di Marzio reports the development directly, confirming Inter's interest is now concrete after the player was proposed to the club by intermediaries earlier in the summer. The Nerazzurri had been weighing the pros and cons before moving, according to Gazzetta's English edition, suggesting Khalaili is not an unsolicited first-choice target but an option that has risen up the list after other right-sided avenues closed.
Khalaili posted three goals in eight Champions League appearances for Union Saint-Gilloise last season – a return that sharpened European attention considerably. The Belgian club purchased him from Maccabi for €6.5 million two seasons ago and now value him at around €25 million, though Napoli had been pushing to close nearer €18–20 million before Inter complicated the picture.
Napoli's pursuit is the more advanced of the two. Reports from Italy indicate the Partenopei had reached a broad agreement on personal terms with Khalaili – a five-year contract worth €1.5 million per year – but talks stalled because the clubs could not bridge the valuation gap with Union Saint-Gilloise. That delay is precisely what created ***** e for Inter to enter. Napoli have been active on multiple fronts this summer, and their inability to close quickly on Khalaili has now drawn in a serious rival.
Inter's overall summer approach – operating within defined budget parameters under Chivu – means a fee around the €20 million mark would be required to make this viable. Whether Marotta moves with a formal bid before Napoli improve their offer to Union Saint-Gilloise will define which club holds the advantage in the coming days.
