The Milwaukee Brewers are set to face the Mets in New York this week, as the Crew looks to continue their winning ways. The Brewers, at 81-50 this season, sit firmly atop the NL Central after winning each of their last three series against the Dodgers, Mariners, and Braves. The Mets, at 59-72, sit at the bottom of the NL East with the sixth-worst record in baseball. They've actually been a bit better the last couple of weeks, with a 6-3 record against the Nationals, Padres, and White Sox.
Milwaukee's lone position player on the IL is outfielder Sal Frelick, who is expected to return for this road trip. However, the team suffered a pair of injuries in Sunday's Little League Classic, as outfielder Garrett Mitchell exited after being hit by a pitch with what was categorized as a right forearm contusion, and first baseman Jake Bauers, who has been playing with a toe fracture this season, fouled a ball off his leg/foot, though he remained in the game. It's unclear if either player will miss more time, but overall, not the worst news on that front. On the mound, the Brewers are without Brandon Woodruff (potentially back before the end of the year after not needing surgery), JoJo Romero (late August), Abner Uribe (could be activated on Wednesday), Rob Zastryzny (TBD), Joel Kuhnel (late August), Brian Fitzpatrick (out for season), Quinn Priester (out for season), and Angel Zerpa (out for season).
The Mets are without first baseman Mark Vientos (on rehab ******* ignment), outfielder Juan Soto (September), and infielder Jorge Polanco (out for season). Old friend Devin Williams is on the injured list with a shoulder strain that will keep him out until at least September. Fellow pitchers Cionel Pérez (September), Justin Hagenman (TBD), Tylor Megill (out for season), and Reed Garrett (out for season) are also out.
Jake Bauers leads the Brewer offense with 23 homers, 19 doubles, and 75 RBIs this season, as he's slashing .273/.382/.503 in the best season of his career. Jackson Chourio, Brice Turang, William Contreras, Joey Ortiz, and Andrew Vaughn are among the other key contributors in recent weeks, while veteran Christian Yelich continues to suffer from the bad-luck bug. Gary Sánchez, Garrett Mitchell, David Hamilton, Cooper Pratt, and Luis Lara are also in the regular mix, with Jonathan Ornelas serving as some infield depth. As a team, the Brewers are hitting .254/.337/.396 (.733 OPS ranks seventh), with 120 homers (last), 650 runs scored (fifth), and 129 steals (third).
With Soto out, Carson Benge, Bo Bichette, Marcus Semien, Francisco Lindor, and Francisco Alvarez lead New York's offense. Benge has 16 homers, 17 doubles, 53 RBIs, and 19 steals in what has been a solid season overall, while Bichette, Semien, and Lindor are all have down years by their standards. Jared Young, A.J. Ewing, Luis Robert Jr., and Brett Baty are also in the regular mix, with Christopher Morel, Luis Torrens, Eric Wagaman, and Cristian Pache rounding things out. As a team, the M

Reggie Watts' "Comedy Bang Bang" theme song was cut from Monday's episode of the popular podcast following a Rolling Stone report that alleged the comedian and musician has exhibited "reckless and selfish" behavior regarding drugs in his past relationships.
The story, which was published on Thursday, alleges that Watts' late ex-girlfriend, Katherine McCollough, developed a ketamine addiction while dating him (Watts has been a longtime advocate for the drug). Their relationship ended in October 2025 after McCollough experienced a drug-induced manic episode that summer, and in March of this year, McCollough traveled to Peru to take her own life. In a statement to Rolling Stone, Watts' attorney Andrew Brettler called the claims "dangerously false" and said it was a "preconceived narrative" to suggest that he was responsible for her suicide.
Watts — known for starring in the TV version of "Comedy Bang Bang" from 2012 to 2016 before becoming the bandleader for James Corden's "Late Late Show" — penned the theme song for the Scott Aukerman-hosted podcast, which began airing as a radio show in 2009. The song was played before last week's episode on Aug. 17, but is not present in Monday's installment featuring Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein of "Portlandia" fame.
Representatives for Watts, "Comedy Bang Bang" and Aukerman did not immediately respond to Variety's request for comment.
In addition to the allegations surrounding McCollough, the Rolling Stone report contains claims from five women who previously dated Watts and allege a pattern of "reckless and selfish" behavior regarding drugs in their relationships. Two women alleged that their relationships with Watts were "emotionally and psychologically abusive."

Left-hander Andrew Sears is reportedly on his way to Detroit. The Tigers 11th ranked prospect on our preseason rankings, Sears has shown out in two Triple-A appearances since being promoted from Double-A Erie back on August 11. The X account Dr. Degenerate, apparently the burner account for someone with good sources, reported on Saturday that Sears is being promoted to Detroit. That account has nailed several recent promotions in the Tigers' system. The report has been circulated by both Emily Waldon as well as the MiLB Central official account on X, and Chris McCosky of the Detroit News confirmed that Sears is with the team in Kansas City and will be used as a bulk reliever in Sunday's bullpen game.
The 23-year-old Sears, he'll turn 24 on August 30, was the Tigers 10th round pick in the 2023 draft out of Connecticut. That makes him the first pitching prospect drafted by Scott Harris to reach Detroit, and another later round success story to go with Brett Callahan. Sears received a $167,500 bonus to sign, just barely over the base bonus of $150,000.
Sears made his full season pro debut in 2024 at the Low-A Lakeland level, where his strikeout rate was good and he was rarely hit hard, but had some control issues. Those were resolved by 2025, and the southpaw continued to rack up good strikeout numbers and prevent home runs while throwing a lot more strikes for High-A West Michigan. Left-handers often thrive in A-ball and then struggle as more advanced hitters get used to seeing more southpaws against them, but Sears didn't miss a beat moving into the upper levels. He closed out the season with a nice run over six starts at Double-A Erie. The hope this year was that Sears would refine his changeup and overall command a bit more, reach Triple-A and become available in the second half of this season to help the major league club.
Ultimately, this all came to pass, but it was a wild ride for Sears this year. He had a bone spur fracture in his throwing elbow to begin the season, and spent a few months recovering and rehabbing, returning to Erie in mid-June. He made nine starts for the SeaWolves, compiling a 2.57 ERA/3.44 FIP combination, with a 24.3 percent strikeout rate and a 7.6 percent walk rate. In two starts for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens, Sears has been a strikeout machine, punching out 41.2 percent of hitters he's faced. His walk rate has ticked up to 11.8 percent, but he also hasn't allowed a home run.
We've pegged Sears for two seasons now as the next lefty swingman for the Tigers. He can start, but he makes plenty of sense as a long reliever and spot starter who also works out of the bullpen. His deception, built on a bit of funky, crossfire delivery and a quick arm from a low slot, makes him tricky to deal with, and his stuff has routinely played up compared to the raw stuff metrics. The big task this season was to refine his changeup and get to using the offspeed more often to take pressure off his good sinker-slider combination, and

Aug 21 (Reuters) - The dollar slipped on Friday, trading near a three-month low against the euro, as concerns mounted that the U.S. Treasury's plan to expand buybacks of longer-dated government ‌debt could weigh further on the U.S. currency.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Thursday he may increase the government's ‌repurchases of Treasuries even further, a day after the department surprised markets by pledging to at least double the size of its buybacks of longer-dated debt in an effort to rein in bond yields.
Long-dated yields jumped this week, with the 30-year yield reaching its highest level since 2007. Traders cited concerns over the deteriorating fiscal outlook, heavy issuance, geopolitical risk stemming from the war with Iran, and uncertainty over the Federal Reserve's policy path.
Analysts say that holding yields down will simply shift the burden of fiscal concerns onto the currency. ‌And so far the strategy hasn't achieved its primary goal, as yields have crept back higher.

NEW YORK, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Longer-dated global bond yields retreated from multi-decade highs, the dollar tumbled and gold jumped on Wednesday after the U.S. Treasury Department said it would boost liquidity support for longer-dated securities, following a broad selloff fueled by fears over swelling sovereign debt.
The U.S. Treasury ‌Department said it would double the size of liquidity support buyback operations for longer-dated nominal coupon securities to at least $4 billion per operation from $2 billion.
U.S. long-dated government yields ‌fell by as much as 10 basis points, dragging European government bond yields down too. U.S. long bonds had hit their highest in nearly 20 years on Tuesday, at nearly 5.34%, reflecting growing concerns about inflation and high debt.
"It is the first of many possible actions that the Treasury could take to support the long end," said Gennadiy Goldberg, head of U.S. rates strategy at TD Securities. "A more permanent measure would be lowering long-end auction sizes."

Thirty years after the U.S. women's national team won the gold medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, going 2-1 over China, and a month after the 2026 World Cup ended its run across the American continents, soccer has returned to the heart of the Classic City at Sanford Stadium.
A record-breaking 25,433 fans packed the metal bleacher seats under the blistering 93-degree setting sun, curving around the west end zone and north side of the stadium to watch the Georgia Bulldogs face the James Madison Dukes to open their home schedule.
Georgia has been a hotbed for soccer since Tiffeny Milbrett broke the deadlock created by China's Sun Wen in the 68th minute of the biggest match on grass and made history for America in front of approximately 76,000 people.
Three decades of all-aged girls have come through the Peach State, which has produced the fourth-most NWSL players. Three of 23 women on the 2019 World Cup roster hailed from the metro-Atlanta area, including Emily Sonnett, who currently plays with the NJ/NY Gotham FC; Morgan Gautrat née Brian; and Kelley O'Hara.
Which made Thursday night something special to witness, especially for this next generation of girls soccer players. Girls like Emerson Finch, Harper Eubanks, Mattie Raborn and Charlotte Peyton, who all play for Augusta ****** nal.

Aug 19 (Reuters) - Target raised its annual sales forecast for a second time this year as efforts to cut prices and freshen merchandise yielded results, while its quarterly profit received a nearly $1 billion boost from tariff refunds.
It was the third straight strong quarter for Target, ‌and the results suggest the turnaround plan of new CEO Michael Fiddelke is taking root ahead of the all-important holiday shopping season, even as high fuel prices ‌pressure household budgets.
Quarterly comparable sales grew 3.8% and beat estimates of 2.5% growth in its earnings report, which Morningstar ****** yst Brett Husslein had flagged as a key test on whether Target can consistently execute on price, product mix and store experience.
The sales growth was powered by a 3.6% rise in traffic and an 8.7% jump in digital comparable sales, as shoppers opted for same-day delivery. However, ticket size was about flat.

As the No. 1 overall pick in this year's NFL Draft, Fernando Mendoza has a lot of expectations to meet. Long-suffering Las Vegas Raiders fans are hoping he is the franchise quarterback they have been sorely lacking, though the organization itself has been taking things slowly with the 2025 Heisman Trophy winner.
Longtime NFL Network ******* yst and former NFL head coach Steve Mariucci knows some things about quarterback play, having worked with the likes of Brett Favre and Steve Young. In a new interview with Alex Withers for Casino.org, Mariucci revealed his feelings on Mendoza and his future.
Mariucci told Withers he's a "fan" of Mendoza and believes he'll be "the man to watch this season."
"I'm watching him closely coming out of this draft to see when he plays and then how well he plays," Mariucci explained. "It's going to be a baptism by fire. It's going to be hard for him but he's my standout pick for the season based on raw talent."
The Raiders have posted four consecutive losing seasons and went 7-27 in 2024 and 2025. The organization is starting over with first-year coach Klint Kubiak, and is banking on Mendoza being a long-term solution.

NEW YORK, Aug 20 (Reuters) - The U.S. dollar fell to a three-month low against the euro on Thursday before paring losses after the Treasury Department moved to calm a bond market selloff that had pushed long-end yields ‌to their highest level since 2007.
The Treasury said Wednesday it would double the size of its buybacks of 10- to 30-year ‌debt to at least $4 billion per operation, an attempt to steady a market that had been rattled by concerns over the growing U.S. fiscal deficit.
The announcement triggered a sharp selloff in the U.S. currency as traders worried about a worsening fiscal picture and potentially higher inflation, boosting gold and bitcoin in what some call the "debasement trade."
The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies including the yen and the euro, was last down 0.01% at 98.82, with the euro up 0.01% at $1.1678. The single currency earlier reached $1.171, the highest since May 14.

Having spent the last season on loan at Leicester City, Jordan James (22) has once again returned to the EFL Championship, this time signing for Wolverhampton Wanderers.
James joined Stade Rennais from Birmingham City for a reported €5m fee back in the summer of 2024. However, the Wales international has struggled for game time at Roazhon Park. He has made just 25 appearances for the Breton club. Last season, he spent the season out on loan at Leicester City. The season ended in a failure and a relegation to League One.
Once again, James has been loaned out to a club relegated from the Premier League, Wolves. The Welsh midfielder has joined the club on a season-long loan deal from Rennes. His move to Molineux also includes the option to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign, as confirmed by the English club in Wednesday's press release.

What channel is Texans vs. Raiders on today? Time, TV schedule, live stream to watch NFL Week 2 preseason game originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
After positive reviews in his NFL preseason debut, top overall draft pick Fernando Mendoza will be in the spotlight once again as the Raiders travel to Houston to face the Texans on Thursday.
Though Kirk Cousins will once again get the start in this game and presumably Week 1 of the regular season, Mendoza is the player NFL watchers want to see as the Heisman Trophy winner continues his adjustment to the pros. He completed 10 of 16 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown last week against the Cardinals and should get another extended look in Week 2.
On the other side, Houston figures to roll out C.J. Stroud for his first action of the preseason after riding with Davis Mills and Graham Mertz last week. Mertz suffered a season-ending knee injury in the loss to the Chargers, leading the team to sign veteran Brett Rypien this week for additional depth.
Both teams will do their best to avoid another injury like that one tonight while still getting in key reps. Here's all you need to know to tune in and watch the preseason Week 2 game.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Braxton Ashcraft allowed five hits over eight efficient innings, Oneil Cruz homered in his return from the injured list, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Detroit Tigers 4-1 on Tuesday night.
Ashcraft (13-5), a first-time All-Star this season, struck out four and didn't issue a walk while throwing just 80 pitches. The 26-year-old right-hander, coming off the first complete game of his career in a win over Miami last week, gave up a fifth-inning homer to Tigers rookie Brett Callahan but otherwise cruised to his fourth win in five starts.
Ashcraft became the first Pittsburgh pitcher since A.J. Burnett in 2012 to record a complete game and then work at least eight innings in his next start.
Mason Montgomery worked the ninth for his fifth save.

After throwing a complete game in his last start in Miami, Braxton Ashcraft threw eight strong innings for the Pirates on Tuesday night. His efforts, along with a two-run home run from Oneil Cruz in his first game off the injured list, lifted Pittsburgh to a 4-1 win over the Tigers at PNC Park.
Top 5th, 1-0 DET: Brett Callahan hit his first-career home run, a solo shot to right off Braxton Ashcraft (13-5) to give the Tigers (61-65) the lead.
Bottom 5th, 3-1 PIT: The Pirates (62-66) didn't get their first hit off Keider Montero (9-8) until the fifth, but Oneil Cruz's two-run home run in his second at-bat off the injured list gave them the lead. Later in the inning, Spencer Horwitz singled home another run with two outs.
Bottom 8th, 4-1 PIT: Bryan Reynolds plated Jared Triolo with a two-out single to left-center off Enmanuel De Jesus to give the Pirates an insurance run.

PITTSBURGH – Sometimes a game looks like it's headed one way and then heads another in an instant, which is what happened to the Detroit Tigers in their 4-1 loss to the Pirates Tuesday, Aug. 18, at PNC Park.
Keider Montero had a perfect game going for a while and then lost his ability to throw strikes. But then the Tigers starting pitcher only gave up three runs in five innings, and wasn't the only reason they lost.
They couldn't hit. Or even manufacture many chances. Not more than one, anyway, as Braxton Ashcraft stymied the Tigers for eight innings, giving up only five hits that felt like even less.
One was to rookie outfielder Brett Callahan, who is the latest in a recent string of call-ups who've announced themselves loudly at the Major League level, and did so again Tuesday with a solo home run in the fifth.
Callahan's blast gave the Tigers a lead that Montero relinquished in the bottom of the inning, and they never threatened again.

Two weeks ago, USC and Notre Dame announced that the two schools will renew their storied football rivalry beginning in 2030. However, the Trojans and Irish are not set to face off in the regular season for the next four years.
But could they meet before then in the postseason? In his 2026 college football season predictions, Brett Ciancia of Pick Six Previews has USC and Notre Dame playing each other in the first round of the College Football Playoff. The winner of that game would advance to meet Georgia in the quarterfinals.
For starters, any prediction that has the Trojans in the playoff will be music to the ears of USC fans. Beyond that, getting college football's greatest intersectional rivalry in a winner-take-all postseason game would be appointment television for all fans of the sport.
First, however, USC needs to worry about making the playoff. This will not be an easy task, as even without the Irish on the schedule, the Trojans still have to play a difficult Big Ten schedule that includes Indiana, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, and Washington.

Danny Kanell and Dusty Dvoracek's SiriusXM show is ending, but both are getting fresh starts on the satellite radio platform.
According to On3's Brett McMurphy, Dusty and Danny In The Morning is ending its five-year run on Friday. However, neither host is leaving. Kanell will remain in the morning time slot and be paired with a new co-host, while Dvoracek moves to the afternoon slot. Per McMurphy, the move is due to Dvoracek's need for greater flexibility due to an increased role at ESPN.
Dvoracek has been seeing his star continually rise in recent years as a college football broadcaster with the Worldwide Leader. He's also become a fixture on SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt. He's become one of the top college football **** ysts at ESPN, where he even called a College Football Playoff game in 2024. After missing the entire series against the San Francisco Giants and the series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Colorado Rockies officially placed Hunter Goodman on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder strain, retroactive to August 15.
Goodman, 26, played the entire series in Arizona last week, catching the first two games before serving as the designated hitter in the third game. During the series, he went 1-for-9, with the lone hit being a triple. He was initially in the lineup in three of the last four games but was scratched hours before first pitch each time.
The two-time All-Star catcher has had a prolific year at the plate as a key run-producer in the Rockies lineup. Entering play on Monday, Goodman is batting .251/.320/.541 with 34 home runs and 69 RBI. In his absence, the Rockies have utilized Brett Sullivan, who has batted .316 (6-for-19) with three home runs and eight RBIs during the last road trip.
In a corresponding move, the Rockies have recalled Braxton Fulford from Triple-A Albuquerque. Fulford carries a .177/.254/.290 slash with one home run and seven RBI on the season in 40 games with the Rockies. During his time with Albuquerque, Fulford is batting .270/.399/.484 with five home runs and 21 RBI in 35 games. His numbers have been excellent during his time in the Pacific Coast League, but the hit tool and plate discipline haven't quite translated in his limited big league action.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy joked Tuesday that he had the blessing of his wife, Mia, to return to the team after she was shot at their Virginia home because, well, "I know I was driving her and a bunch of my family members crazy in the house."
Mia was shot the evening of July 26, and the couple's 27-year-old son, Elijah, was arrested. Eric left the Chiefs right away to help his family through the crisis, and he returned to camp last week ahead of a preseason loss to the Rams.
"First and foremost, yes, she's on a great road to recovery. Yes, she's doing great," Bieniemy said of his wife, speaking to reporters for the first time since she was rushed to the hospital with multiple wounds. "It is one of the main reasons that I am back here, because of her recovery. She's truly a soldier. She's a saint. And it's been incredible to watch."
Bieniemy was never far from camp, even while he was back home in Ashburn, Virginia. He was able to watch streams of practice from Missouri Western State University, and he was often conferenced into team meetings before and after the workouts.
At one point, he called Chiefs general manager Brett Veach — who he knew was seated beside coach Andy Reid — and told him to give Big Red the phone. Bieniemy proceeded to remind Reid to get on one of his players for a seemingly minor coaching point.

The days of recruiting an elite group of players and developing them over the course of a few seasons are mostly gone in college football. There are still a few teams that operate that way, but building through the transfer portal is more of a viable option than it's ever been before.
Penn State will be one of those teams this season, with more than 20 transfers on the roster from Iowa State alone. At least one player in that group is bound to have a massive impact, and USA TODAY's Austin Curtright believes it will be quarterback Rocco Becht.
Curtright listed 10 of the most impactful transfers in the Big Ten, and while he didn't rank them numerically, Becht was placed among some heavy hitters. He became one of the most decorated passers in Cyclones history — finishing top-three in passing yards and touchdowns — and hopes that success will translate to a more talented conference.
Becht will have a familiar supporting cast with the Nittany Lions, which should help ease the transition. Wide receivers Chase Sowell and Brett Eskildsen, tight end Benjamin Brahmer, and running back Carson Hansen came over from Iowa State as well as coach Matt Campbell, so there should be a level of cohesion offensively.
Penn State has a lot of belief in Becht, and it sounds like Curtright does too. Becht has a chance to do big things with this team if he plays to the standard he set while with the Cyclones.

Tigers' Brett Callahan's spark fizzles during White Sox weekend sweep originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
On the first pitch of his MLB career, Detroit Tigers outfielder Brett Callahan connected on a 76-mph knuckle curve by Chicago White Sox pitcher Sean Burke and delivered a two-run triple to a team that needed a spark.
The Tigers entered the weekend with a chance to take sole possession of first place in the AL Central.
Instead, following Sunday's 7-5 defeat, they dropped 5.5 games behind the division-leading White Sox, who slammed seven home runs during the three-game sweep at Comerica Park.
The second-inning spark the rookie provided ... fizzled.

The lopsided pitching matchup didn't materialize, but it turned out not to matter, as big bats beat big arms.
As he crossed into more innings than he had pitched all of last season (134) Sean Burke had his worst start since June 13, giving up four earned runs on five hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings that took him 72 pitches. His velocity was off a couple of ticks and his command wasn't terrific, either. The first and biggest blow was a two-run triple in the second on Brett Callahan's first major league pitch. Callahan then was knocked in on a Max Clark single to make it 3-0 (Callahan's next time up he was called out on strikes by home plate umpire Adam Beck on a clear ball, but his attempt at a challenge was declared too late by Beck, who had a terrible day overall.)
The Sox got one run back on a Tristan Peters opposite-field pop-up ground-rule double (those corners in Comerica are really short) and two grounders. The Tigers got it back to 4-1 on an opposite-field homer off Sam Antonacci's glove by Colt Keith in the third, then in the fifth they learned why the dreaded leadoff walk is so dreaded: Tigers starter Drew Anderson, at his highest pitch count all year, pinned Peters down 0-2 then threw four straight ****** , followed by a slider that didn't slide that Drew Romo slid 386 feet to right to make it 4-3.
A Randal Grichuk pinch-double and Colson Montgomery broken-bat single in the sixth tied the game. Next, Tigers lefty reliever Todd Holton again proved the dreaded-leadoff-walk rule by giving Antonacci (who doesn't hit lefties well) a five-pitch pass and following that by setting one on a tee for Munetaka Murakami, only to see it land 393 feet away. Make it 6-4, White Sox.
The Tigers cut it to 6-5 in the seventh when Dillon Dingler broke an 0-for-29 slump with a double to score Gleyber Torres, at which point Mune proved he's not just another pretty bat:

The Chicago White Sox pulled off a crucial road sweep of the Detroit Tigers, delivering the final blow with a 7-5 victory on Sunday.
Detroit had previously fallen to Chicago 9-5 on Friday and 4-3 on Saturday. It's the first time that the White Sox have swept the Tigers since 2022.
The White Sox's win came despite a mediocre showing from ace Sean Burke, who allowed four runs early in the game and was pulled after 4 1/3 innings. However, a two-run home run Munetaka Murakami and a vital relief outing from Sean Newcomb ended up being the difference in the sweep-clinching win.
Detroit struck first, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second off RBIs from Brett Callahan — a recent call-up who hit the RBI triple on his first major league pitch — and Max Clark. Chicago rookie Sam Antonacci got one back with an RBI single in the third, but a Colt Keith solo homer gave the Tigers an early 4-1 lead.
The White Sox then slowly built their way back into the game, first with Drew Romo's two-run homer in the fifth and then an RBI single from Colson Montgomery to tie the game at 4-all.

As Hurricane Lala drenched parts of the Hawaiian Islands, the calm remained at sunny Father Bray Athletic Complex.
By 1:30 p.m., Edison kicked off to host 'Iolani, and the Chargers from Huntington Beach, Calif., put a jolt into the Raiders with a 41-27 win at Eddie Hamada Field. Sam Thomson threw three touchdown passes, while running backs Brett Dempsen and Gavyn Degiacomo combined for 183 yards and three TDs on 21 carries.
It was a 27-0 lead before the home team began to find its footing. Edison played a mix of reserves and starters from beginning to end. 'Iolani coach Patrick Samsonas found solace in his team's in-game resilience.
"I feel wet. It's a wet game," he said of the gusty, rainy conditions by game's end. We battled in the second and that was the test. They answered some of the calls. That's a really good team in the CIF (California Interscholastic Federation). I'm proud of our guys for battling. We've got a bye week before we get another mainland team."
'Iolani (1-1) hosts Westview (San Diego) on Aug. 29.
