MIAMI — Josue De Paula's major league debut was never going to be judged by the box score alone.
The 21-year-old Dodgers prospect went 0-for-3 with a walk Friday night at LoanDepot Park, hardly the kind of debut that jumps off the page. But for a player who has spent years building toward this moment, the more meaningful signs came in the at-bats themselves.

Álex Rins is done with motorcycle racing. On the eve of the San Marino Grand Prix, the Monster Energy Yamaha rider confirmed he will leave MotoGP at the end of 2026, but ruled out a rumored move to the World Superbike Championship. Instead, Rins will step away from two-wheeled competition entirely and pursue a project on four wheels instead.
The rumors had been building at Magny-Cours, and Rins cleared them up himself during Thursday's media scrum at Misano. Discussions with Go Eleven reportedly fell through, and rather than chase a Plan B in WSBK racing, the 30-year-old Spaniard went a different direction entirely.
"I will not go to Superbike next year," Rins said. "I had two possibilities there. I really want to say thanks to them because they were quite interested in me. But I found another thing that really motivates me more." He added that he can't reveal the new project yet because negotiations are still on-going but hinted that it would be on four wheels instead of two.
"I'm really happy. For sure it was difficult to choose, because all my life in MotoGP, in this championship, many fights, many races, many wins," says Rins. "14 years, more or less. So yeah, I will stop with two wheels."
Rins didn't slam the door completely on bikes. He floated the idea of a limited return in the vein of Cal Crutchlow.

Napoli have said Scott McTominay's heart surgery "was a complete success" and expect the Scotland midfielder to resume training this month.
The 29-year-old's ablation procedure - a minimally invasive operation to correct irregular heart rhythms - took place at Spire Manchester Hospital on Tuesday morning.
McTominay was substituted after 56 minutes of Napoli's 2-1 Serie A defeat by Como on 30 August.
A mild benign arrhythmia was discovered, prompting the corrective treatment.
Napoli, who said in statement that "McTominay will rest for two weeks and then resume training", had expected the former Manchester United player to return to action after the international break in early October.

Dave Roberts reveals when Shohei Ohtani could finally return to Dodgers lineup originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Los Angeles Dodgers could soon have Shohei Ohtani back in their lineup after the superstar missed his fourth consecutive game Sunday night.
Ohtani remained sidelined because of physical issues that have included discomfort in his right biceps and left knee. While any injury involving the four-time MVP creates concern, Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts has offered optimism about his progress.
The Dodgers have understandably taken a cautious approach with one of baseball's most valuable players, especially considering what Ohtani has accomplished this season.
Ohtani is batting .279 with 30 home runs, 80 RBIs and 11 stolen bases across 499 at-bats. He also owns a .906 OPS, once again giving Los Angeles elite production near the top of its lineup.

PITTSBURGH — Saturday night's game against the Angels looked like one that would be a win for the Pirates.
The Pirates had their top starter on the mound in Braxton Ashcraft, who entered play with a team-high 14 wins including three in a row. Ashcraft was opposed by left-hander Yusei Kikuchi, who was still in search of his first win of the season and entered play with a 5.65 ERA through nine starts in an injury-shortened season.
In addition to having Ashcraft on the mound, the Pirates entered having won seven of their last 10 games to get to within two games of a .500 record. The Angels, meanwhile, entered having lost 10 of their last 11 games to sink their season record to 53-88, the worst mark in baseball.
But then the game was actually played.
Ashcraft cruised through three innings but allowed a combined three runs between the fourth and fifth frames. Kikuchi blanked the Pirates across six innings as struggles against left-handed starting pitching continued. The final score read 6-1 Angels, who led wire-to-wire.

Didn't have much to do in the first half but did what needed to be done without fuss and was only slightly busier in the second half, again just dealing with what needed to be dealt with without fuss.
Pereira was forced into a save in the 54th minute after Wing was caught flat-footed and not defending the edge of the box. Pereira immediately pounced on the rebound but wasn't able to fully claim it/deal with it while under pressure from the Mansfield attacker; he was somewhat fortunate that he won a foul from this.
A good claim in the 70th minute from a high ball was his only other notable contribution, outside of making a couple of routine stops in both halves.
Dokes just did what Dokes does – for the most part he was defensively diligent and made a nuisance of himself further up the pitch on the overlap.
Provided only one standout moment, but it did feel like it changed the game for Reading. Reading were in a 20-minute period of struggling to contain the Mansfield threat, so Dokes took it into his own hands to make a good run forward in the 34th minute which led to an unfortunately poor cross.

Caitlin Clark record mistake reveals how impossible her rookie standard remains originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Minnesota Lynx guard Olivia Miles is producing one of the best rookie seasons in WNBA history. Even that was not enough to break one of Caitlin Clark's most impressive first-year records. That distinction became important after ******* yst Zena Keita mistakenly said on The Athletic's "No Offseason" podcast that Miles had set the WNBA rookie ******* ists record.
Clark still owns it.
The Indiana Fever guard finished her 2024 rookie season with 337 ******* ists. Miles had broken Minnesota's franchise record for ******* ists by a rookie, not the league-wide mark. The correction should not diminish Miles' season. It should underscore how absurdly high Clark set the bar.

The 2026 college football season is upon us, and the No. 2 Oregon Ducks have a real game on Saturday as they are set to host Boise State inside Autzen Stadium Sept. 5 (12:30 pm, CBS).
This will be the first time in Oregon's history that it will play a team from the Pac-12 and the Ducks are not the team from that conference. Rather, it will be the Broncos making their debut as a member of the Pac-12. The last time Boise State made a trip to Autzen was in 2024, when the Ducks slid by with a narrow 37-34 victory.
Oregon is hoping this game won't be nearly as close, as the Ducks are a 24.5-point favorite over Boise State. Dan Lanning's squad enters the season with high expectations, with a senior-led roster that is shooting for the program's first national championship.
But as coaches from around the country say, it's one week at a time, and for this week, the Ducks' sole focus is on the Broncos, a team that was picked by the media to win the new Pac-12.

Roster cuts are beginning to fly left and right, but Pittsburgh Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger believes one underrated running back deserves to make the 53-man squad.
On a new episode of Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger, Lew Nichols earned massive praise for his high level of play this past month, with Big Ben arguing that he should make a 53-man roster, whether it's with Pittsburgh or elsewhere.
"Nichols ran awesome last night," Roethlisberger said. "I think he, maybe, like said 'Hey hey, don't forget about me'. I think he did enough last night to get himself a job. If not here, somewhere, but I think here."
Nichols signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2023 and was released by the team in September of his rookie year. After off-and-on stints with the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad from 2023 to 2025, Nichols joined the Steelers in July 2025.
While Nichols was ultimately waived by Pittsburgh as part of the final roster cuts, he was brought back via the Steelers' practice squad and even made his NFL debut in 2025 against the Indianapolis Colts.

The third preseason game for the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots did not include a lot of players who will play a lot of snaps in Week 1, but it did include a lot of roster bubble guys. The amazing Browns fans were planning to tune in, with QBs Dillon Gabriel and Taylen Green taking the snaps this week:
The biggest stories coming out of the game will be any injuries and how those bubble players perform with the chances that they are given. Some of the evaluation is tougher given the level of talent on the other side of the field, with the Patriots also not playing their top guys. Take everything within that perspective.
A few takeaways from Thursday Night Football off the shores of Lake Erie:
Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson have locked up the top of the depth chart, but Raheim Sanders still has to secure his spot as the third guy. A few carries in the first few series looked like Sanders, nicknamed "Rocket," is on his way to having that role.

Juventus are continuing to trim fat, but it's still not enough to finally table their offer for Frank Kessié, and Roma have entered the race, joining Al-Ittihad and other Saudi sides that would cover him in gold to keep him in their league, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.
After releasing Arthur Melo, the Bianconeri will bid farewell to Fabio Miretti. He'll move to Besiktas, like Dusan Vlahovic, on a loan with a conditional obligation to buy. The Old Lady also completed Michele Di Gregorio's exit and Kamil Grabara's arrival, with a temporary formula with a €12M acquisition clause. Instead, Mattia Perin transferred to Palermo on a €500k move.
On the other hand, the recent departures don't suffice yet for Juventus to really step up their Kessié pursuit. They have to find a solution for the burdensome Teun Koopmeiners, Jonathan David, and Nicolas Gonzalez. Juan Cabal and Arkadiusz Milik are also on the chopping block.
In the meantime, Roma have shown some interest in the Ivorian powerhouse, who broke out under Gian Piero Gasperini at Atalanta. They have skirted the Manchester United threat for Manu Koné, as the Red Devils completed their midfield with Carlos Baleba. Other sides could be keen on him, but Neil El Aynaoui is a more precarious spot now.
They shouldn't waste any more time and should sign him in after managing to have a hold on him for so long, and worry about the departures later. Koopmeiners is the main Gordian knot, but there may also be issues with his personal terms. It's been a while since the capital club signed a veteran with bloated wages, even though Gasperini surely wouldn't mind.

Sometimes, when everyone is standing around and waiting for a leader to step up, it falls on you to become that leader.
The Big Ten took on that role Tuesday morning, reportedly coming together as a conference and planning to vote on a new rule that would block players who have declared for the NFL from returning to the college level for one more year of eligibility granted by the new "5-for-5" scholarship rule.
According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, any player who declared for the NFL draft and did not withdraw, appeared on an NFL roster, or signed a contract with a pro league cannot be on a Big Ten roster.
This has been a major conversation over the past week after a temporary restraining order was granted for former college athletes who would have otherwise been granted an extra year of eligibility under the new scholarship rule, had it not been passed after they left for the NFL. We've seen players like Dae'Quan Wright, a former Ole Miss TE who signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent this summer, ask to be waived by the Browns so he could come back to school, enter the transfer portal, and join Lane Kiffin with the LSU Tigers.

The Cleveland Browns, in a shocking twist, have reportedly named quarterback Deshaun Watson the starter for Week One of the 2026-27 NFL regular season on Monday morning.
Throughout the course of the offseason, the ongoing quarterback battle between Watson and 2025 fifth-round pick Shedeur Sanders was the primary question mark for the franchise. Despite Watson's recent comments about fans booing him during Saturday's preseason contest against the Buffalo Bills, head coach Todd Monken and his staff have ultimately decided to roll with the veteran to begin the season.
Following the reports of Watson being named the Browns' starting quarterback, NFL insider Albert Breer gave insight into the decision, claiming that the choice came down to "the full body of work" during the offseason.
"The decision for the Browns came down to the full body of work—Deshaun Watson was better and more consistent over time before a tough day Saturday, and practiced well against the Bills on Thursday," Breer stated in a social media post on Monday. "The other thing that I've said all along, it's easier to go from Watson to Sanders than the other way around. If this doesn't work, Cleveland can pivot."
This offseason has been full of drama for the struggling organization.

Dundee head coach Steven Pressley: "What I would say is we've obviously come here with a game plan, but we didn't carry out any part of it to be honest. But what was very apparent in our performance was the grit and determination that your supporters are generally so proud of.
"I'm immensely proud of this group of players, but in terms of what we set out to do, no. Derby games are never won on tactical detail, they're won on spirit and determination and I think we had than in abundance today.
"Sometimes winning away from home is being comfortable with the uncomfortable and we did that at times today. It was no tactical detail that won us the game today, it was a group of players that were determined not to lose that derby and I couldn't be prouder of the players.
"What's most pleasing is that the three games have been incredibly difficult games, but there's a spirit about us, a togetherness about us just now that is serving us well.
"We have to remember we're only three games into it, but I know a derby game is very important for momentum, the feel-good factor and very important for supporters, so I'm a very proud manager tonight."

Not Australia, England, India or Pakistan. Spain have become the team with the longest winning streak in international cricket, breaking the record previously held by Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh's Australia.

Spain are currently playing in the Men's T20 World Cup Sub Regional Europe Qualifiers in Southern Finland and have won all their matches in the tournament so far. Their latest victory came against Bulgaria on August 18, when they chased down a target of 60 in just 29 deliveries, winning by nine wickets.

Spain moved past Australia's record when they beat Finland in their opening match on August 14. That victory was their 21st in a row in international cricket, taking them one win beyond Australia's previous record of 20.

They have since extended the streak to 24 consecutive victories after beating the Isle of Man, Luxembourg and Bulgaria.

Spain's 24-match winning run has included T20I series against the Isle of Man and Jersey, as well as two series against Croatia. The two Croatia series were separated by the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Sub Regional Europe Qualifier in 2024, where Spain finished second after one of their matches was abandoned.
Australia's previous record of 20 consecutive international wins came across Tests and ODIs under Waugh and Ponting.

The run began on January 11, 2003, when Australia beat England in Hobart. It continued until the third Test against the West Indies in Bridgetown in May 2003.

Australia's winning run finally ended when the Waugh-led side lost the fourth Test against the West Indies.

During that period, Australia went unbeaten in the 2003 ODI World Cup after winning all their matches in a tri-series involving England and Sri Lanka. They then switched to Test cricket and won three matches against the West Indies.

Ponting captained Australia in the ODI tri-series and the World Cup, while Waugh led the team in Tests.

Australia played 17 ODIs and three Tests during their 20-match winning streak.

Spain have now gone past that mark, extending their international winning run to 24 matches.

The Athletics' blew another late lead on Tuesday night in Kansas City, allowing three runs in the bottom of the ninth to let an easy win slip right through their fingers. This one hurt.
Facing Kansas City left-hander Daniel Lynch IV tonight, the A's got to work right away against the reliever-turned-starter. Zack Gelof drew a one-out walk to spark the first-inning rally and was immediately followed by a Jeff McNeil single and another walk to Jonah Heim. That loaded the bases and brought up rookie infielder Tommy White. A productive out would have been fine but the A's ideally needed a hit, and White delivered with a base knock to left field to drive home one:
McNeil got a bit greedy behind Gelof trying to score and was gunned down at the plate. That took the air out of the rally and the A's would ultimately only come away with one. Felt like they left some meat on the bone there.
That one run was enough for the Athletics' pitching early. Righty Jack Perkins was initially slated to start but a late change saw left-hander Brady Basso get the ball for the first couple frames. He had a clean 1-2-3 bottom of the first then allowed one harmless single in the second. Pressing his luck, Mark Kotsay sent Basso back out for the third and Basso allowed another hit but also got one more out before getting pulled for Perkins.
Perkins was just as effective as Basso. He finished the third inning and would end up pitching through the sixth inning. He'd only allow two base runners in his work tonight, looking sharper as the game went on. He ended his night on a massive high, striking out the side in the sixth including an inning-ending punchout of Royals star Bobby Witt Jr.

Two San Francisco 49ers rookies earned spots on Pro Football Focus' all-rookie team for the opening weekend of the preseason, and while wide receiver De'Zhaun Stribling put together a productive statistical debut, he wasn't one of them. The honorees were offensive tackle Carver Willis and interior defensive lineman Bryson Eason.
Willis, a fourth-round pick with the versatility to play both inside and outside on the offensive line, posted a 90.1 PFF run-blocking grade in his preseason debut. He did allow three hurries across 23 pass-blocking snaps, an area to clean up, but the run-blocking showing was enough to land him among PFF's top rookie tackles alongside the Rams' Austin Blaske.
Eason, an undrafted free agent along San Francisco's interior defensive line, didn't produce eye-popping numbers but avoided any negatively graded plays in his first outing to earn a 77.3 grade. PFF noted that fellow 49ers rookie Gracen Halton also impressed, posting a 73.7 overall grade, but there wasn't room for a third interior defender on the list.
The three selections reflect a 49ers roster loaded with young talent competing for depth-chart spots this summer. PFF's Team of the Week pulled from a massive rookie pool — teams averaged more than six rookies on the field per snap in the preseason opener — with only players who logged at least 15 snaps eligible for consideration.
Stribling, who didn't make the cut, actually out-produced two of the three receivers who made PFF's list by raw volume. He caught seven of eight targets for 63 yards — more receptions and more targets than either Cowboys receiver Camden Brown (three catches, 62 yards on three targets) or Giants receiver Malachi Fields (three catches, 34 yards on three targets).

Barcelona's pursuit of Rodri has reached the point where the transfer now appears to depend on one final round of negotiations.
According to MARCA, the two sides have significantly narrowed the gap following Barcelona's latest offer and are now separated by €10 million.
As reported before, the current proposal is worth €70 million in total, made up of €60 million guaranteed and a further €10 million in bonuses. Manchester City, however, want €80 million including add-ons.
That leaves a relatively small difference for a transfer of this size.
With both clubs optimistic, the Rodri operation now looks less like a question of whether Barcelona can convince City to negotiate and more about finding a structure that works for both sides.

New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart started the 2026 season in the most familiar way possible for Giants' fans: A trip to the blue tent to be evaluated for a concussion, followed immediately by a touchdown on an improvised pass play.
The headline of the day was the two-play sequence to end the first quarter and start the second. Dart took a massive hit from Jay Ward of the Minnesota Vikings on a second-and-10 when Dart failed to identify the blitzer and running back Tyrone Tracy failed to pick up the blitz.
Dart got up gingerly after the hit and was immediately called to the blue tent to be evaluated for a concussion while Giants fans held their breath. Dart returned after missing two plays, and found Malachi Fields for an improvised 15-yard touchdown pass.
Dart completed 3 of 4 passes (75%) for 26 yards (6.5 per attempt) and a touchdown. Dart was also sacked twice, once on each drive.
This was about what we've come to expect from Dart: Big hits, big plays, and play that seems more impressive than his stats. Dart left the game after his touchdown and will now go back to practice with a list of things to work on.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama running back AK Dear is expected to miss about six weeks because of an ankle injury sustained in a preseason scrimmage, according to reports.
Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer said Thursday that Dear was injured in the first of two scrimmages and would be evaluated. Tests revealed the severity of the injury, 247Sports and On3 reported Friday.
"It was unfortunate because he was having a real nice scrimmage there with the touches he got," DeBoer said.
Dear, a redshirt freshman from Mississippi, had been in the mix for the starting job to replace Jam Miller. The Crimson Tide will now turn to highly touted freshman Trae'shawn Brown, EJ Crowell and Daniel Hill. Hill led the team with six rushing touchdowns in 2025.
Dear had 140 yards rushing and three scores in five games.

When the New England Patriots took the Gillette Stadium fields on Tuesday for their joint session with the Indianapolis Colts, Christian Gonzalez was nowhere to be seen. The star cornerback did not make a late entry either; for the first time this training camp, he missed practice.
Gonzalez's absence comes in light of his ongoing contract negotiation with the Patriots. Naturally, it raised questions whether or not the two were related.
According to a report by Greg Bedard of the Boston Sports Journal, they were not. Gonzalez apparently sat out the session due to a "minor injury sustained at the end of Monday's practice."
The 24-year-old appeared to hurt his ankle during that particular session, trying to defend a touchdown pass from Drake Maye to Romeo Doubs. He did not receive any medical attention on the field and left the session with no obvious limitation.
Speculation nonetheless ran high on Tuesday, especially with Gonzalez seemingly throwing oil on the fire on social media later during the day:

England have received a boost ahead of their three-match Test series against Pakistan, with opener Emilio Gay reportedly expected to recover in time for the first Test at Headingley, beginning August 19. Gay suffered a shoulder injury while playing for Durham against Middlesex on Friday, but scans have reportedly shown no serious damage.

Gay made his Test debut against New Zealand earlier this year and scored two half-centuries in the three-match series. Despite some inconsistency, his partnership with Ben Duckett impressed England's management, who want to give him more opportunities after dropping Zak Crawley.

According to the Daily Mail Sport, Gay's scan on Saturday revealed no major injury, meaning he should be available to resume his opening partnership with Duckett against Pakistan.

The series will also be Joe Root's first official ******* ignment as England's Test captain since returning to the role. Newly appointed head coach Stephen Fleming has been involved in selecting the squad, while Marcus Trescothick will oversee the team as interim head coach for this series before Fleming takes full charge.
