CHICAGO – Wisconsin football, like its peers across the Big Ten, has kept its cards close to its vest when it comes to how much money the program has for roster construction.
One national report gave an idea of how much the Badgers might have spent to ****** emble their 2026 roster, however.
The Athletic's Justin Williams reported that Wisconsin's roster budget was "north of $25 million" in 2026 and more than twice what it was in 2025. The article cited "people briefed on the budget who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss it publicly."
"I don't know where they got all their numbers," Fickell said.
The article also quoted prominent UW booster Ted Kellner, who said his understanding was that the Badgers were in the "bottom third, bottom 40 percent of the Big Ten in terms of NIL money" in 2025.

The Washington Huskies are a month away from beginning the 2026-27 season in an Apple Cup showdown against the Washington State Cougars at 1 p.m. PT on Sept. 6 at Husky Stadium in Seattle.
The upcoming season will be the third under current head coach Jedd Fisch, which resulted in positive results in his previous stops.
Fisch's time with the Huskies marks the second rebuild in two stops for the head coach.
Fisch coached from 2021-23 at his previous stop, the Arizona Wildcats. He led Arizona to 1-11 in his first season, 5-7 in his second and 10-3 in his third.
In Fisch's first year as head coach of Washington in 2024, UW went 6-7. Last year, the team finished 9-4 after a 38-10 win in the Los Angeles Bowl against the Boise State Broncos.

The tennis tour is heading into one of its busiest stretches of the season, with the North American hardcourt swing just around the corner. The sport's biggest stars are already ramping up their preparations for the season's final Grand Slam, the US Open. Home favorites Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe have arrived in Washington, D.C. for the ATP 500 event (July 27-August 2).

Former Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold has an arraignment hearing before a judge in Tampa scheduled for Aug. 13, Greg Auman of Fox Sports reports. He faces eight felony charges of kidnapping and robbery from his arrest last month.
The Lions released Arnold a day before he posted a $1 million bond and left the Hillsborough County (Florida) jail.
He was arrested on four counts each of kidnapping and armed robbery, which could bring a life sentence if he is convicted.
The former first-round pick has drawn interest from the Colts, Jets, Seahawks and Texans, his agent, Nicole Lynn, testified before a judge on July 10. He remains a free agent as training camps begin to open.

Cam Newton doesn't sound like a man nursing a grudge.
Hours after ESPN cut ties with him in the same round of layoffs that ended Ryan Clark's 11-year run at the network, the former Carolina Panthers quarterback framed his brief run at First Take as something closer to an internship than a second career.
"Working alongside some of the most talented journalists and sports individuals that cover sports was something that got me to realize I have a newfound respect for the skill," Newton said. "You can't make me hate ESPN. What I've learned, it was an internship. I am a former athlete that did not study journalism, so now when you see how production actually works, you'll be a fool not to take your notes."
Newton signed a multi-year deal with ESPN last August to expand his role on First Take, stepping into the seat vacated after Shannon Sharpe's departure amid a ***** ual ***** ault lawsuit and settlement. From there, Newton became a fixture alongside Stephen A. Smith through the football season, a run that included a manufactured feud with New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye and widely criticized comments about women's value being tied to how many children they have. Criticism even came from colleagues within ESPN after he had Stephen A. Smith's arch-enemy, Jason Whitlock, on his podcast. In response, Smith stated that there were a number of reasons why Newton's First Take presence could be questioned, but that he was still supportive of his appearances on the program.

Working on a contract that expires at the end of this season means every move Dana Brown makes as Houston Astros general manager will be inspected closely.
Since taking over the job in January 2023, Brown has stayed busy, making 40 trades. Fifteen of those deals have been minor with the return on one side or the other simply involving cash. However, he's taken some big swings and come up a winner like when he brought back Justin Verlander at his first trade deadline and then had the foresight to get Yusei Kikuchi into the Astros' pitching system at the 2024 deadline.
He's also whiffed, especially in this past offseason. Although it's best not to judge trades too quickly, swapping Mauricio Dubón for Nick Allen and giving up two prospects for Mike Burrows, who has struggled mightily, are both looking like bad ideas.
With the trade deadline approaching on Aug. 3, Brown - and perhaps Astros owner Jim Crane - must make a decision if the Astros, who are still six games below .500 but just 3.5 games out of first place in the American League West, should be buyers or sellers.
When he's been a buyer, Brown has proven to be able to convince teams to take prospects that haven't come back to haunt the Astros, but is the team willing to roll the dice again?

The Lazio sporting director returned from Croatia empty-handed after failing to convince Dinamo Zagreb to loan him out for €3 million with an obligation to buy for €8.5 million, but he’s expected to try again.
According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, the Biancocelesti will launch a new onslaught for the 21-year-old defender in the coming days. Dinamo Zagreb are holding out for €15 million, and Lazio believe they’ll be able to satisfy their demands one way or the other.

The Athletics were a fun team to watch last season. Their core group of mainly younger players had no trouble producing offense, but the pitching staff was what held them back.
During the offseason, they didn't really address the hole as much as fans would have hoped, but they did bring in Aaron Civale to serve as a frontline starter.
Initially, the staff seemed a bit better than they were last year, but that didn't last long. The pitching staff is hurting, and the offense is now missing some key contributors.

The New Orleans Pelicans reportedly re-signed veteran big man DeAndre Jordan to a two-year, guaranteed $7.9 million deal. Jordan returns for two more years after spending this past season with the team.
Right after the deal was announced, an NBA ******* yst questioned the decision, which cost the Pelicans $3 million more.
The Pelicans' decision to give the former All-Star center a two-year guaranteed deal was met with sharp criticism from Austin Robert, who tweeted:
"I was informed by someone in the league that the NBA prorate of vet min. Deals only applies to 1-year deals. So the Pelicans will be paying the entire $7.9M. 'His comment was, 'I don't think they understood the rule,' referring to Joe Dumars.'"

Due to the buffoonery of the College Football Playoff Committee and the expansion to nine SEC game dockets, Alabama made a decision to cancel an intriguing series with West Virginia in favor of a higher calorie cupcake ECU. The Pirates had a fine season in 2025. However, a closer look shows problems in Greenville.

2025 record: 9-4 (6-2 in AAC, 4th in the conference, Military Bowl win over Pitt)
Looking back: Harrell became interim head coach after Mike Houston's firing following week 7 of the 2024 season and finished with a 5-1 record including a bowl win over big brother NC State. Last fall, he led the Pirates to a strong 9-4 season in the competitive AAC and added a second bowl win to his resume.

The Texas Rangers, with their second round pick in the 2026 MLB Draft, #54 overall, select Austin high school infielder Connor Comeau. We did a write-up on Comeau earlier this week.
Connor Comeau is a 6’4”, 180 lb. lefthanded hitting, righthanded throwing infielder out of Anderson High School in Austin, Texas. Comeau is on the young side for a draftee, as he doesn’t turn 18 until August. He is committed to Texas A&M, though the Rangers wouldn’t be taking him in the second round if they weren’t confident he would sign.
Comeau offers a quality hit tool with power projection. Baseball America says he “stands out for his present hitting ability.” He has a nice, easy swing and showed strong contact ability on the showcase circuit last summer. He has shown the ability to hit the ball hard to all fields. He has shown the ability to hit for power — MLB Pipeline notes he finished second in the Home Run Derby at the Canadian Futures Showcase this past summer — but is still extremely lean currently, so there’s a belief that he should add more power as he develops and his body fills out.
Comeau played shortstop in high school, but most likely will immediately move to third base as a professional. He has a good arm, but not much speed, so third base would be the best fit for him, if he can stick there.
Baseball America has Comeau at #55 on their board. MLB Pipeline has Comeau at #55 on their board. Kiley McDaniel puts puts Comeau at #66 on his top 150 list. Keith Law has Comeau at #59 on his board. Fangraphs has Comeau at #32 on their board. Baseball Prospectus does not have Comeau on their top 30 draft board.

The 2026 MLB Draft begins in Philadelphia on July 11, with the Chicago White Sox picking first overall. A promising young franchise that needs an injection into its middling farm system, who will the Southsiders land on? Will it be UCLA's star shortstop and longtime consensus No. 1 pick Roch Cholowsky? Georgia Tech's breakout star catcher Vahn Lackey? Or will the White Sox follow in the footsteps of the Washington Nationals last year and pick Texas high schooler Grady Emerson?
All options are on the table for Chicago, which heads into the All-Star break battling for first in the AL Central with the Cleveland Guardians. From there, it's anyone's guess. The Tampa Bay Rays will be picking second, the Minnesota Twins third, the San Francisco Giants fourth, and the Pittsburgh Pirates round out the top five.
The White Sox now face an interesting decision. White Sox amateur scouting director Mike Shirley has indicated the team won't be rushing anyone to the Bigs, regardless of team success. "Our guys have done a tremendous job in letting the player mature," Shirley said to MLB.com earlier this season. "Even the 1-1 pick, he'll tell us when he's ready. In some ways the development of this, maybe the player doesn't have to be rushed to support the organization."
That certainly doesn't signal a philosophy shift is imminent, though the franchise likely wouldn't want to tip its hand. The Rays and Twins won't be moved off their building strategies, and the Giants need to find a way to right the ship in San Francisco.
The slot value at No. 1 overall is $11,350,600, up 2.5% from last season.

Michigan State athletics has new temporary leadership.
MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz named Jon Palumbo as interim athletic director on Friday, July 10. He will replace outgoing AD J Batt to run the department until a permanent replacement can be hired. The move is effective immediately, according to Matt Larson, MSU's senior vice president of communications.
"Jon has been an integral part of the innovation of MSU Athletics over the past year, and I have every confidence in his ability to maintain its positive trajectory as interim athletic director," Guskiewicz said in a statement. "This will be a seamless transition for MSU Athletics, and we look forward to a successful start of the upcoming season for our programs and student-athletes."
Batt, whose hiring was approved by MSU's Board of Trustees on June 13, 2025 and whose first day of work was four days later, took the job at Kentucky on Monday, June 15 and will officially begin his new position July 28 in Lexington, Kentucky. MSU will receive a $3.95 million contract buyout from Kentucky for Batt leaving.
Guskiewicz lured Batt away from Georgia Tech last spring, but Batt quickly found a new home less than three weeks after Guskiewicz announced May 27 he would be leaving MSU to take the president position at Clemson. However, Guskiewicz announced Monday he would remain as MSU's president.

LAS VEGAS — When the No. 1 pick goes up against the No. 2 pick, the stars come out.
The AJ Dybantsa vs. Darryn Peterson game was heavily attended at Las Vegas Summer League, with the lower bowl at Thomas & Mack center absolutely packed and NBA stars lining the court on all sides.
But the crowd was left a little underwhelmed, with the game not really reaching the level of hype it had garnered prior to tipoff.
“Look, they’re two of the best young players on the planet, and people are excited about them, and rightly so,” Jazz ******* istant coach Steve Wojciechowski said of Peterson and Dybantsa. “Those guys, from a very early age, have had to learn to handle the spotlight. And I’m not sure any games they’ve played in has been as big a spotlight as this one. ... And I thought both of them handled it really well.”
While both Peterson, the No. 2 overall pick by the Utah Jazz, and Dybantsa, the No. 1 overall pick by the Washington Wizards, were able to showcase a number of reasons that they are going to be centerpieces for their respective teams, this was not the Summer League classic that everyone was hoping for.

After a tournament of legal drama and Donald Trump-driven referee beefs, Poch's tactical masterplan for the Round of 16 apparently evaporated into "just wasn't our day."
He's currently stuck in an awkward phase: surviving a 4–1 World Cup thrashing only to sit through mandatory chats about the future. While U.S. Soccer schedules polite talks to figure out what happened, there seems to be an inkling that he just really misses the daily European club grind.
Mauricio Pochettino's future is up in the air now, as he's technically no longer the USMNT manager with them now out of the competition.

The NFC North is projected to be a dominant division once again in 2026. It was one of the best in 2025, as all four teams had a chance to win it and they all finished above .500. Part of the reason that this group is so good is that Chicago's Ben Johnson, Green Bay's Matt LeFleur, Detroit's Dan Campbell, and Minnesota's Kevin O’Connell are the four head coaches. Each of them is considered to be among the best the NFL has to offer.
The next big reason is that three of the four are set at quarterback heading into the 2026 season and beyond. Unless injury slows them down, Chicago's Caleb Williams, Detroit's Jared Goff, and Green Bay's Jordan Love are ready to play.
For the Vikings, Kyler Murray has come in to battle JJ McCarthy for the starting job. Each Minnesota quarterback has a first-round pedigree, but each of them sees 2026 as a fresh start for different reasons. Whoever wins the job likely won’t enter the season ranked ahead of the other three.
So who is the best between Williams, Goff, and Love? The quarterback of the Bears absolutely has a case to be made. Williams set a franchise single-season passing record with 3,942 yards, as well as 27 touchdowns to just seven interceptions in 17 games played for Chicago, who went 11-6 and won the NFC North. He came just shy of becoming the first Bears quarterback to ever throw for 4,000 yards. If the Bears didn’t lead the league in dropped passes, he would have blown past that mark.
Now, Williams comes into 2026 with another fresh start, a taste of what it was like to not only make the playoffs but also advance in the playoffs, and Johnson has one full year under his belt as a head coach. Together, they can make sure that Williams ends the season as the undisputed best quarterback in the division.

Rudi Völler will fulfil his contract until Euro 2028 as sporting director at the German Football Federation (DFB), having talked to designated new national team coach Jürgen Klopp and DFB top officials.
Völler told reporters from five German media outlets on Tuesday that he wants to contribute to the rebuilding of the team after Germany were eliminated from the World Cup early for the third time in a row last week, going out in the round of 32 against Paraguay.
Coach Julian Nagelsmann resigned and it was not clear if Völler would stay.
But Völler confirmed to dailies Bild, Frankfurter Rundschau, Süddeutsche Zeitung, publishing house Funke and Kicker sports magazine that Klopp had **** ured him in a phone call on Saturday that they could work together.

The Seattle Mariners are trying to win the AL West and make a push for the World Series in 2026. This team has great potential, but they could use a bit more help at the 2026 MLB trade deadline.
While there are some needs on the team, two stick out as the ones the Mariners should address this summer: a high-leverage reliever and a right-handed hitter.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic identified those two as the Mariners' biggest needs, but also linked them to a trade idea with the New York Mets involving veterans Jorge Polanco and Huascar Brazoban that would be a terrible idea for Seattle this summer.
"Best fit: Jorge Polanco, DH/1B, and Huascar Brazoban, RHP, New York Mets," Bowden writes. "Securing a reunion with Polanco, who is currently on rehab ******* ignment with the Mets, and acquiring right-handed reliever Huascar Brazoban in one big trade would be a strong move for Seattle."
