The Boston Red Sox traded for Sonny Gray in the offseason, and he has been a great addition.
Gray has a 2.69 ERA in his 14th season and has made 26 starts so far for the Red Sox. He has been a very reliable starter in his first season with the Red Sox, but the 36-year-old does not know what his future holds. He has a $30 million option next season, but has noted that he will retire if his family wants him to.
"I'll be done in a heartbeat," Gray told The Boston Globe's Alex Speier when asked what he would do if his family wants him at home year-round.
Gray has played in 371 games, including the postseason, and has been named an All-Star three times. He has not undergone Tommy John surgery, which is almost unheard of nowadays, especially for someone like Gray who has pitched so many innings. However, he has never won a World Series. The Red Sox should be playing baseball in October, and Gray is focused on helping the team do something worth remembering. He is unsure if he will be back next season, so he is making the most of the moment.

Cleveland Browns fans were already primed to dissect every word uttered about Shedeur Sanders. A Monday exchange involving Todd Monken and longtime beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot gave them another reason.
Cabot reported that rookie Taylen Green "could be" the active No. 2 quarterback behind Deshaun Watson and ahead of Sanders against Jacksonville. Monken did leave that possibility open, but the full exchange focused on whether Green could have a small package of plays and whether Cleveland would dress three quarterbacks.
Monken's actual answer explains why the wording became the flashpoint. Asked about Green having a role Sunday, Monken said, "Could be. There could be a package where we have him."
He later acknowledged that dressing three quarterbacks would be "a lot." He did not announce a permanent depth-chart change, though.
But fans started dissecting the way Cabot presented it, as one said, "Mary Kay is deceptive."

Division III powerhouse Mount Union lost its first regular-season game since 2016 on Saturday.
The Purple Raiders fell 24-23 to Wheaton in their 2026 season-opener after Wheaton blocked a game-tying extra point with 22 seconds to go. Mount Union's Kayden Minner scored on a 1-yard run ahead of the failed extra point, and the Purple Raiders elected to go for the tie and potential overtime instead of what could have been a game-winning two-point conversion.
After blocking the PAT, Wheaton then recovered Mount Union's onside kick.
The loss snapped a regular-season win streak that lasted 85 games. Before Saturday, the last time Mount Union lost a non-playoff game was on Nov. 12, 2016, when John Carroll scored a 31-28 win. Most of the members of that Mount Union team are now in their 30s.
Mount Union made the semifinals of the D3 playoffs that season and won the 2017 national ****** le with a 15-0 season. Since then, the team has, remarkably, not won a national championship as the regular-season win streak lived on. Over the past six full seasons, Mount Union has lost the Stagg Bowl three times and was eliminated in the third round of the Division III playoffs in 2025 after an 11-0 start.

College football's Week 1 has kicked off, and college football Saturdays are back in full swing. The Alabama Crimson Tide hosted the East Carolina Pirates to kick off their season at home.
Alabama, led by quarterback Keelon Russell, got off to a commanding 17-0 lead to start the second quarter. However, there was a concerning development observed early that has continued from last season: its star wide receiver has a case of the drops once again.

Alabama star wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams undoubtedly has the big-play ability to keep defensive coordinators up at night. However, through less than 16 minutes of game action, Coleman-Williams had two bad drops.
One came on a wide-open play downfield in the first quarter. The other came in the red zone on fourth-and-3 and would have resulted in a touchdown. East Carolina jumped offsides, though, so the drop ultimately did not matter.

Manchester Storm said the team is preparing for an "emotional" return as the city prepares to welcome them home for the first time in 24 years.
The team will face Sheffield Steelers in a pre-season game at 16:00 BST on Sunday at Manchester's AO Arena.

Argentina midfielder Leandro ‌Paredes said it will be difficult to continue playing international football after receiving a 10-match suspension for his role in a brawl following the World Cup final ⁠defeat by Spain.
The 32-year-old also said Lionel Messi's decision to retire from Argentina duty was another reason he would have to weigh up ⁠his future with the national team.
Paredes received the suspension in August, weeks after an altercation erupted at the final whistle when he shoved Spain midfielder Gavi to the ground as the ‌champions' substitutes rushed onto the pitch to celebrate.
Paredes faced three ***** ault charges, while teammate Nahuel Molina faced two. Both players were also fined $90,000.
"It's going to be difficult for me to stay with the national team," Paredes told Argentinian media on Tuesday.

A Georgia Bulldogs long snapper survived the grind of final cuts and has made an NFL roster. Former Georgia long snapper Beau Gardner has made the Chicago Bears' active roster, according to a team announcement. He won the competition against Luke Elkin.
Gardner will be an integral part of the special teams unit alongside kicker Cairo Santos and punter Tory Taylor. Santos has been the Bears kicker since 2020, while Taylor has been one of the best punters in the league.
Gardner was also a part of a great special teams unit in Georgia, where he transferred in 2024 after three seasons with the UCLA Bruins. Kicker Peyton Woodring, still on the team, made the All-SEC second team in 2024 and 2025, while Brett Thorson, the punter for the Minnesota Vikings, was a first-team All-American and winner of the Ray Guy Award in 2025, along with being All-ACC second team in 2024 and 2025.
Gardner himself was a great special teamer in Georgia. He was first-team All-SEC in 2024 and 2025, first-team All-American in 2025, and even won the Patrick Mannelly Award in 2025 for being the best long snapper in the nation. He consistently delivered great snaps. The Bears signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2026 as a reward, and he has made the team.
The Bears have very little former Georgia Bulldogs on their team, with just running back D'Andre Swift joining Gardner. They used to have linebacker Roquan Smith on their team before he was traded to the Baltimore Ravens in 2022. Gardner is not the only undrafted Georgia specialist to make an NFL team. Brett Thorson made the Vikings as well.

The legal feud between the SEC and LSU may soon escalate to historic levels.
High-ranking SEC university executives are exploring legal and internal avenues intended to address the school's plans to add former professional athletes to its rosters, including extreme measures such as boycotting competition against the Tigers, sanctioning the school with probation or even expulsion, and/or filing a federal legal challenge.
Multiple sources with knowledge of the conversations spoke to Yahoo Sports under condition of anonymity. An SEC spokesperson declined comment. An LSU spokesperson also declined comment.
The conversations, primarily among SEC school general counsels and university presidents, are considered in the early stages. The talks are described as "not league driven, but membership led." While these discussions are serious in nature, it is unclear as to what avenues the conference or its members will ultimately pursue.
It is unlikely that the league or its member schools make a formal decision on a path forward before a Thursday hearing in Baton Rouge, where a judge is expected to hear arguments in the Louisiana eligibility case that opened the door for these professional athletes to return to college.

ANN ARBOR — There has been talk that the strength of Michigan's defense will be its line, but the truth may be a bit deeper on the field as the Wolverines' secondary, particularly the corners, has the benefit of a group of experienced, talented players.
Cornerbacks coach Jernaro Gilford believes Michigan has four corners who could prove impactful this fall in Jyaire Hill and Zeke Berry, both starters last year for the Wolverines; veteran transfer Smith Snowden, a starter at Utah; and sophomore Shamari Earls, a four-star recruit who played in six games last season.
"I'm very self-confident, so I feel like all my groups can be a leader of the defense, whether we're young, old, whatever the case may be," Gilford told reporters this week. "I'm very confident in what I bring to the table. I'm very confident in (defensive coordinator) Jay Hill because he is a DB. I'm very confident in what he brings to the table and what he's taught me under his tutelage for the last three years, so there's never been a down moment for me in my group.
"I always feel like we can be one of the top groups, but with these guys, 100% the expectation is to be one of the top groups in the country. That's our expectation."
This is the time of year, the days before the start of the season, when coaches and players throw out lofty expectations. Gilford and his group certainly have a legitimate shot at living up to them. There's versatility in the secondary and Jay Hill and Gilford have shown a willingness to be creative in how they use the players.

The Los Angeles Angels placed outfielder Gustavo Campero on the injured list after he came out of Tuesday's loss to the Cleveland Guardians.
Campero injured himself in an attempt to advance from first base to second on a wild pitch in the second inning of Tuesday's loss, pulling up halfway to second base and exiting the game after limping to the base and having a brief conversation with the trainer.
The 28-year-old outfielder had just returned to the team from Triple-A Aug. 22 after outfielder Wade Meckler landed on the concussion injured list. He played in four games afterwards, posting a .788 OPS with two RBIs over the course of those games.
To replace Campero, the Angels recalled outfielder Bryce Teodosio from Triple-A. They also moved the bullpen around, optioning left-hander Blake Weiman and recalling right-hander Trevor Martin.
Teodosio has played 34 games this season, spending most of the year in Triple-A after coming up late in 2025 and posting disappointing numbers. On the year, Teodosio has a .213/.260/.255 slash line for a .515 OPS, and has stolen four bases in five attempts.

Jordan Hall, a Princeton High School running back committed to the Miami University RedHawks, received an offer August 24 from the Cincinnati Bearcats, per Hall's Twitter/X account.
Hall tweeted that UC was his 11th offer. He's tweeted previously about offers from Wake Forest, UConn, Penn State, Florida Atlantic, Marshall, Austin Peay, Army, Miami, Bowling Green and Toledo, and visits to UC, Ohio and Pitt.

The Boston Red Sox were down to their final three outs Saturday night. They also had not scored a run. That somehow did not stop them from delivering one of their most dramatic wins of the season.
Boston scored three times in the bottom of the ninth inning to stun the San Francisco Giants, 3-2, at Fenway Park. Wilyer Abreu completed the comeback by putting the ball in play with the bases loaded, allowing Evan White to race home with the winning run. It was an unlikely finish for Abreu, who had struck out in each of his first four plate appearances. Faced with one more opportunity, he battled through a seven-pitch at-bat and hit a ground ball toward first base.
Giants first baseman Bryce Eldridge attempted to get the force out at home, but his throw was off line. White scored safely, setting off a celebration near home plate and giving Boston its second consecutive win over San Francisco. The win improved the Red Sox to 70-59 overall and 33-32 at Fenway. The Giants dropped to 52-77.
Boston's offense spent most of the evening searching for an answer against Giants starter Blade Tidwell. Tidwell allowed only three hits over 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He struck out seven and kept Boston from producing a hit with a runner in scoring position.

The name, image and likeness collective that connects Tennessee fans with athletes, exclusive experiences and merchandise is opening a store in Knoxville that will sell limited-edition Vols gear.
The Volunteer Club, which supports University of Tennessee athletes through fan memberships and merch sales, announced its first storefront is opening Sept. 4 at 6601 Kingston Pike in Bearden.
The store represents the "next evolution" for NIL, said co-owner Will Crockett, who told Knox News he is launching the concept as a way to bridge the gap between fans and athletes with a physical ***** e for them to interact. In other words, according to a news release, the store will be anything but "another traditional Tennessee apparel shop."
"There are plenty of those already," the announcement said, "and they do just fine."
Former Tennessee running back Travis Stephens will be on hand for the grand opening, which invites fans into a ***** e designed to feel like a piece of Vols history. The Volunteer Club storefront will feature authentic, nostalgic decorations such as a 1930s-era scoreboard on the wall, Crockett said, as well as an old bathroom door and phone booth from Neyland Stadium. The Los Angeles Lakers are in a bit of a bind as they try to piece together a post-LeBron James roster. It's not easy losing a franchise star player, one of the main faces of the franchise, after eight years together. So, the Lakers are in need of some big changes.
As the offseason continues, reports have indicated that the Lakers had their eyes on Klay Thompson as a target to get high-level perimeter shooting. He would also add a much-needed veteran presence to their roster.
Those dreams vanished on Friday. NBA insider Shams Charania has revealed that Thompson is "expected to sign with the Miami Heat after he clears waivers upon a contract buyout with the Dallas Mavericks," per sources from ESPN.
That hurts. It's not something the Lakers can't overcome. Missing out on Thompson means a lost opportunity for the Lakers to add a sharpshooter to their lineup. It also strengthens one of their rival teams, which already has stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.

A common theme is developing in the WNBA, with more and more coaches becoming fed up of the outside noise.
The Dallas Wings pulled off a close victory over the Indiana Fever, led by an explosive season-high 32 points from Arike Ogunbowale and a career-best 26 points from Jessica Shepard. Dallas shot an impressive 59% from the field despite a 20-point effort from Kelsey Mitchell.
You'd think the postgame talk would be all about the basketball, but instead it was all still focused on the transgender situation in the WNBA.
While it needs to be addressed, it's frustrating to watch genuine achievements get completely eclipsed by non-basketball culture wars when the focus should strictly be on the talent.
And that's a common reaction amongst those in the thick of it in the WNBA.

Back in the spring, Michigan football head coach Kyle Whittingham said his biggest concerns were the inexperience at the linebacker position and the depth at cornerback. Well, more than halfway into fall camp, it appears that both problems are in the process of being solved.
On Thursday, Wolverines defensive coordinator Jay Hill said that if there's one position group that's improved the most, it's probably linebacker, and behind that, he's feeling like he's starting to see solid depth develop at cornerback behind the four usual suspects who are starting caliber.
"Well, probably linebacker," Hill said. "There's, like I say, there's really five or six guys that I feel comfortable playing in games. I'd like to see some of those guys just completely cement themselves as the starter, but that's a good problem that we have right now. That and then the battles at that fifth, sixth, seventh corner and safety spots, those guys need to really -- someone needs to step up out of those groups and solidify themselves in those roles, five, six, seven at those, in the DB spots."
So why has the linebacker position managed to improve so greatly? Hill says he just sees steady development in the unit, and feels like they probably have up to six players (likely Nathaniel Staehling, Chase Taylor, Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng, Troy Bowles, Max Alford, and Aisea Moa) who are playing at a high level in fall camp.
"I think we're getting better every day," Hill said. "That comes from knowledge of the scheme, the culture, the run of the football, the hitting, the tackling. I just think we're getting better every day. You ask about the linebacker group, I think that group continues to solidify themselves every day. There are six right now that I think we can win with, and it continues to be a battle as to who's in there with the ones and who's in with the twos. But for the most part, I see that group continue to elevate."

We ****** umed Green Bay Packers tight end Tucker Kraft might need some time to get back to form after returning to full practice recently.
After all, we've seen time and time again that players aren't always themselves upon returning from a torn ACL.
However, that doesn't appear to be the case with Kraft, who is dominating in his first two days of 11-on-11 periods at Packers practice.
According to The Athletic's Matt Schneidman, Kraft has caught every ball thrown his way over his first two days of 11-on-11s, and he threw in a one-handed catch for good measure.

The Oklahoma Sooners are a top-10 program heading into the 2026 college football season, according to the preseason AP poll released on Monday. The Sooners came in at No. 10, coming off a 10-3 season and a College Football Playoff berth in 2025.
However, not everyone is on board with the Sooners' top-10 ranking. On "SportsCenter," ESPN's Paul Finebaum said that Oklahoma doesn't belong that high.
"I don't know how people realistically think Oklahoma's going to finish in the top-10," Finebaum said. "You can say whatever you want about what they have in John Mateer... but, Matt, their schedule is beyond brutal."
Former Sooner great Gerald McCoy had an issue with that statement from Finebaum. He tweeted saying that Oklahoma is one of the best programs in the history of college football, and they don't shy away from anyone.
"Schedule?" McCoy posted. "That's your reason, Finebaum? Man, this is the scariest, weakest statement ever. Winning a natty ain't easy. It has to be earned. This is OKLAHOMA FOOTBALL. Joe Dean Jr., who followed in his father's footsteps to become an SEC basketball broadcaster and who also had a successful career as a coach and athletic director, has died at the age of 71.
Dean Jr. played basketball for the Mississippi State Bulldogs under coach Kermit Davis Sr. and parlayed that into a coaching career, first as an MSU graduate ***** istant, then as an ***** istant coach at Kentucky. He was a member of the coaching staff on the 1978 national championship squad.
Dean served as head coach at Birmingham-Southern from 1983-89, putting together a 137-45 record and two trips to the NAIA Tournament. He later coached UCF from 1989-93, compiling a record of 37-73.
After that, he started broadcasting SEC games for Jefferson-Pilot Sports (later Raycom Sports) and Fox Sports, as well as the SEC Network, often working alongside Tim Brando. He popularized the catchphrase "string music," which was also a tribute to his father, Joe Dean Sr., who was also an SEC broadcaster.

The Cincinnati Bengals really appear to have a big hit on their hands with rookie wideout Colbie Young.
Young, the fourth-round wideout who keeps making big plays in training camp…just keeps right on doing it.
One of the latest examples comes from over the weekend, where Young soared up to grab a contested catch from Joe Burrow. Dan ***** d provided the footage, plus a quote from Bengals wideouts coach Troy Walters:
Young himself talked about his growing connection with the star quarterback.
"As soon as I get out of my break, the ball is there. Like I've said, you can't guard a perfect ball," Young said, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. "Just me and Joe trusting each other on that timing route. He makes it easy. All that pressure in his face, he has to read all the checks, and he still threw a perfect ball out there."
