TORONTO (AP) — Charles McAdoo homered and Jameson Taillon pitched four scoreless innings before leaving with an injury as the Toronto Blue Jays beat Boston 2-1 on Monday night to hand the Red Sox their third loss in a row.
Boston's skid follows a nine-game winning streak that capped a franchise-record string of 27 victories in 30 games.
McAdoo hit his second major league home run in nine career games leading off the fifth to give Toronto a 1-0 lead. The 24-year-old rookie made his first start at third base in place of Kazuma Okamoto, a late scratch due to a bruised left knee.

Whatever else can be said about tonight's game, it had one of the most "you can't predict baseball" moments of all time. It was the only run the Sox scored, and it was utterly ridiculous, and they lost anyway.

If Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer had one goal ahead of this year's trade deadline, it was to add the type of starting pitcher that a team in win-now mode needs and deserves. And on the eve of the trade deadline, we can now say that he has done just that. The Chicago Cubs landed one of the best rentals on the market Sunday, acquiring right-hander Kevin Gausman from the Toronto Blue Jays for prospects Brett Bateman and Ty Southisene.
Gausman, 35, checks a lot of boxes for the Cubs, who have also acquired pitchers David Peterson and Aaron Civale in recent weeks. Not only is Gausman the type of frontline starting pitcher that Chicago's rotation has been missing, but what's more, for a team looking to go deep into October, he has the postseason pedigree that is sought after by every contender.
Chicago's newly acquired right-hander is 5-10 with a 4.38 ERA in 23 starts this season, but his 3.51 FIP would suggest that he has been a bit unlucky thus far in 2026. In his postseason career, Gausman has a 3.83 ERA with 56 strikeouts across 56 ⅓ innings.
There might not be a team in baseball that has been hit as hard by injury as the Chicago Cubs this year. And most of that has come in their starting rotation. After right-hander Cade Horton was lost to season-ending elbow surgery, left-hander Justin Steele hit a setback in his rehab and has yet to pitch this season. Right-handers Ben Brown and Edward Cabrera are also currently on the 15-day IL.

Interestingly enough, his first start for the Cubs could wind up being against his old team, as the Blue Jays will be playing a makeup game Thursday at Wrigley Field — and it's possible his opponent could be Taillon.

Seven games behind the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers, the Chicago Cubs have comfortably secured a postseason spot. With a 59-46 record, they hold the top NL Wild Card position, despite navigating an injury-plagued starting rotation. To replace Taillon on the Cubs pitching staff, right-hander Ethan Roberts was recalled from Triple-A Iowa. Roberts had been optioned to Iowa Friday when Edward Cabrera was activated, but that was largely just a numbers game. Roberts has been pretty effective out of the pen this year, posting a 1.96 ERA and 1.091 WHIP in 14 appearances covering 18.1 innings.
Also Tuesday, the Cubs activated Matt Shaw from the injured list. He’d been placed on the IL May 22 with what was termed “mid-back tightness.” Shaw was batting .242/.291/.400 in 42 games at the time of the IL placement, and I’m not saying this is cause-and-effect, but the Cubs have gone 5-12, tied for MLB’s worst record, since Shaw last played May 19. Shaw went 4-for-14 with a double in four rehab games at Iowa.
