Philadelphia 76ers star Jaylen Brown is one who has many interests outside of the game of basketball. He took classes at MIT to further his education, he has done a lot in the community in terms of his philanthropic work, and now has taken on surfing, apparently.
Video footage of Brown surfing has recently popped up around social media and it's due to two USA swimmers who found a random GoPro camera and decided to look at what's stored on the camera.
Swimmers Patrick Sammon and Michael Andrew recanted the story about how they found Brown's GoPro and what they did with it:
Sammon: As soon we turned it on, we're like, 'Oh, this guy looks super familiar.'
Andrew: And for sure an athlete. Like, this guy's huge.

The Mets came from behind to walk off the Nationals in a thrilling 5-4 victory. Sean Manaea provided desperately needed length, the bullpen held firm, and the Mets mounted a ninth inning rally that culminated in a Francisco Alvarez game-tying double and a Francisco Lindor walk-off knock to win it.

Given the disaster the Dodgers are dealing with right now, it is increasingly looking like the Mets made the right decision when it comes to Edwin Díaz.
The Mets are evaluating their infield options for 2027, writes Will Sammon of The Athletic.
In rock bottom, perhaps the 2026 Mets have found some fun, writes Laura Albanese of Newsday.

Having traded away a slew of players ahead of the trade deadline earlier this evening, the Mets are set to call up six players, per Will Sammon: Dedniel Núñez, Jefry Yan, Nate Lavender, Chayce McDermott, Xzavion Curry, and Cristian Pache. The team has 21 players on its active roster at the time of this writing, and with Curry having just been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Friday.
Núñez had Tommy John surgery last July, and he's been pitching in the minors on a rehab ***** ignment. In 13.0 innings, most of which have been with Syracuse, he has a 4.15 ERA and a 3.81 FIP. In 44.2 major league innings before his elbow injury, he had a 2.82 ERA and a 2.62 FIP.
Yan is a 29-year-old who took a long break from baseball in the late 2010s, but he'll be making his major league debut whenever he appears in a game. He's been in the Mets' organization since the start of the 2026 season, and he's had an outstanding 43.5% strikeout rate and a somewhat staggering 15.8% walk rate with a 3.24 ERA and a 2.64 FIP in 41.2 innings between his time in Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse. He's known for his eccentric strikeout celebrations.
Lavender, a left-handed reliever, has been in the Mets' system since the team drafted him in 2021. He was limited to just 7.0 innings in 2024 and missed the entirety of the 2025 season because of an injury. He's thrown 43.0 innings in the minors this year with a 3.77 ERA and a 2.78 FIP. He, too, will be making his major league debut when he first appears.
McDermott is a 27-year-old right-handed reliever who came to the Mets when they traded minor league catcher Ben Rortvedt back to the Dodgers today. He's thrown a total of 15.0 major league innings with the Orioles and Dodgers and has a 12.00 ERA and an 8.74 FIP. He has a 4.55 ERA and a 4.51 FIP in 31.2 innings in Triple-A this year.

After what was a fairly quiet trade deadline for Milwaukee through roughly 2 p.m. CT, the Brewers finally made their first move at roughly 2:15, acquiring right-handed starter Dustin May and left-handed reliever JoJo Romero in a trade with the Cardinals, per Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic.
The return in the trade is not yet known. Stay tuned here for updates.

We've at last arrived at the MLB Trade Deadline. Once the clock strikes 6 p.m. EST this evening, teams will no longer be able to trade to reshape their rosters; what you have is what you've got the rest of the way. It's the last chance for clubs around the league, and for Brian Cashman and the Yankees, to load up for a playoff push.
Though this deadline season took a while to heat up, we at last saw some marquee names exchanged this weekend. Yesterday, Freddy Peralta went to the Rays, Kevin Gausman went to the Cubs, and the Yankees made a major move with the acquisition of slugger Luis García Jr. Of course, the biggest news was the Dodgers' addition of Tarik Skubal late Saturday night, a move that was expected by many but is still earth-shaking in its impact on the pennant race.
The Yankees laid in wait for some time leading up to the deadline, but after dealing Camilo Doval to the Pirates for prospects and then shipping out prospects for García, they're out of the shadows and moving actively. Will they stay active on deadline day? Follow along with us as we keep you updated with every move and rumor from across the league all day.
2:00 PM EST: It's a double-batch of trades reported at the same time at two o'clock. Figures. More relevant of the two: the Rays are getting a big boost behind the plate while the Yankees still don't have an answer beyond Austin Wells. Jeff Passan says that they've arranged an all-Florida swap with the Marlins for Liam Hicks, who has broken out with 2.5 rWAR and a 124 OPS+ in 101 games. He's 27 but is under team control through 2030. Ack. 2023 first-round pick Brayden Taylor is among the three players going to Miami per Will Salmon Sammon. Ack. The other trade of the moment has the Giants sending Robbie Ray to the Padres, to which we say… "alrighty then." You do you, Preller.
1:50 PM EST: Perhaps take it with a grain of salt, but Bob Nightengale reports that the expectation is that Tigers starter Casey Mize will be moved before the deadline, and that the Diamondbacks are among the teams interested. Whether the Tigers would go into full sell mode after dealing Tarik Skubal has been a major topic of conversation in the last two days, and so far, they've yet to trade off anyone other than their ace.

Mets make sudden Freddy Peralta decision as trade interest intensifies originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Mets may have offered the clearest indication yet that a Freddy Peralta trade is coming. New York scratched Peralta from his scheduled start against the Miami Marlins on Friday night as trade interest in the veteran right-hander intensified, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman.
Peralta had been lined up to open the Mets' weekend series at loanDepot park. Instead, New York decided not to risk using one of the most sought-after starting pitchers available ahead of Monday's MLB trade deadline. There is no indication that a trade has been completed, but the decision to scratch Peralta suggests talks may be advancing quickly. The Mets now have until Monday at 6 p.m. ET to find an acceptable deal.
Peralta has attracted interest from several contenders despite struggling during his first season in New York. The Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves, Tampa Bay Rays and Milwaukee Brewers have all been connected to Peralta. The San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks have also reportedly scouted him recently.
According to The Athletic's Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal, the Mets have sought a package featuring a top-100 prospect and additional talent in preliminary Peralta discussions. That is a significant asking price for a pitcher who is set to enter free agency following the season. However, the Mets can point to Peralta's track record, swing-and-miss ability and postseason experience while negotiating with teams desperate for rotation help.

Otto Lopez, Gleyber Torres Among Infielders Connected to Red Sox Ahead of MLB Trade Deadline originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
When the Red Sox acquired Curtis Mead from the Nationals, they helped boost their lineup ahead of the 2026 MLB trade deadline. However, Mead's injury in his Boston debut may have changed the team's deadline plans once again.
On Thursday, interim manager Chad Tracy said Mead's "non-displaced fracture" in his left wrist will not require surgery, so the Red Sox won't be ruling him out for the rest of the season, per MLB.com. Still, his injury means that another infield acquisition could be in play for Boston.
The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, Will Sammon and Katie Woo reported Friday that the team is eyeing "additional infield help," including some former All-Star names.
The Red Sox have expressed interest in Marlins infielders Otto Lopez and Xavier Edwards, per The Athletic. With the Red Sox reportedly eyeing a shortstop, either player could be capable of playing the position.

The prospect the Pirates are 'unlikely' to trade for Mason Miller originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Pittsburgh Pirates can clinch their first postseason berth since 2015 with a strong finish to the regular season.
Monday's trade deadline could help the Pirates bring in reinforcements to the roster.
Pittsburgh's main task should be to improve the bullpen. The starting rotation is strong, and the offense has been one of the best in baseball.
To add more quality relievers, the Pirates' front office should be open to any ideas. But they won't go out of their comfort zone, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, Will Sammon, and Katie Woo.

Giants' Luis Arraez trade update is great news for a potential huge return originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The San Francisco Giants are trade deadline sellers, and while Rafael Devers, Matt Chapman, and others might not be likely to be dealt, there are two players who seem to be near-locks to be traded.
Robbie Ray is one, but the one player who is more likely to be traded than any other on this roster is Luis Arraez, the All-Star second baseman. After signing for $12 million on a one-year deal, Arraez is very likely to be traded this summer.
Fortunately for the Giants, according to Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic, the odds for landing a huge return for Arraez look strong, as there is significant interest in the All-Star this summer from almost every contender.
"Now, after both an offensive resurgence and defensive revival at second base, virtually every contender is showing interest in trading for Arraez, according to a person briefed on the Giants' discussions," Sammon and Rosenthal report.

Caeleb Dressel is back.
The nine-time Olympic gold medalist went out first and held off a stacked field to win the men's 100 freestyle in 47.70 on night one of U.S. Nationals. This marks his fastest swim since the 2024 Olympic Trials in a statement effort that the former Olympic champion in this event is trending toward his old form. It capped a big day for Dressel, who had already served notice with a sub-48 prelims swim earlier in the day.
Four men broke 48 seconds in the final, a level of depth that can energize fans of Team USA. Brooks Curry took second in 47.81, Patrick Sammon was third in 47.87, and Virginia's Maximus Williamson, fresh off his impressive freshman year, grabbed to fourth in 47.93. Perhaps most notably, American Record holder Jack Alexy was seventh, a sign he's saving his best for the Pan Pacific Championships in August. Jerry Fox, Grant House and Henry McFadden rounded out the field.
The other headline swim of the night came in the women's 100 freestyle, where Virginia's Anna Moesch broke her own American Record in 51.88.
full recap below, along with a photo-finish women's 200 fly and a wire-to-wire win from World Champion Luca Urlando in the men's 200 fly.

The catcher position has been the Yankees' Achilles heel all season, but they may find their answer in the coming days.
The Yankees have the second-worst OPS (.531) from the catcher position in MLB. The duties have been split between Austin Wells, Ali Sanchez and J.C. Escarra this season, with Wells playing in 70 games and holding a .163 batting average and .524 OPS.
The Yankees are expected to pursue an upgrade at the position ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline, and The Athletic's Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal have thrown a new name into the mix.
Yankees -1.5 run line on DraftKings for Friday's series opener versus the Phillies. Our complete DraftKings Sportsbook review will show you how to sign up and use their platform.
"The Cincinnati Reds' Tyler Stephenson, one available catcher, might become an alternative for the Yankees, and other teams are pursuing the Minnesota Twins' Ryan Jeffers," Sammon and Rosenthal wrote on Thursday.

Mariners' Emerson Hancock rumor throws twist into Luis Castillo trade talks originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Seattle Mariners have a lot of starting pitchers.
That surplus has always seemed like a logical place for them to deal from ahead of the MLB trade deadline, regardless of whether moves would be considering "buying" or "selling." In this case, it would simply be the Mariners giving up a loaded position to improve in a different way.
All along, it's been ***** umed that the veteran Luis Castillo would be the most likely trade candidate.
An article on Thursday by The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon, though, suggests that they might actually trade Emerson Hancock.

Blue Jays are in same boat as Mets for potential Tarik Skubal trade originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Toronto Blue Jays came into the 2026 MLB season as one of the top World Series contenders, but after the season has gone very poorly for a few reasons, they're now at great risk of missing the postseason.
As part of missing the postseason, as they're well behind their top competition in the AL East and the wild card, the Blue Jays could wind up selling at the deadline.
As Katie Woo, Will Sammon, and Patrick Mooney of The Athletic noted, the Blue Jays are in the same boat as the New York Mets when it comes to the trade deadline, and more specifically, in pursuit of Tarik Skubal.
"Tier 8: Maybe in free agency. Teams: New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays," the trio from The Athletic writes. "... The Blue Jays, despite winning the AL pennant last year, are fighting to remain a playoff contender. Both could be awfully motivated to reel in Skubal after the season."

Mets receiving trade interest in $70M outfielder despite .628 OPS originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Mets are heading towards the August 3, 2026, MLB trade deadline as clear sellers. It's not what the Mets wanted to be, but selling is the only real course of action at the deadline that makes sense for the franchise.
As sellers, the Mets are sure to field plenty of trade interest in Freddy Peralta, Clay Holmes, Luke Weaver, Francisco Alvarez, A.J. Minter, and Brooks Raley. But an unexpected name has popped up as someone already garnering interest.
According to Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Mets are seemingly garnering interest in $70 million, .628 OPS outfielder Luis Robert Jr. ahead of the deadline. This is an unexpected, but welcome, development for the Mets.
"Mets center fielder Luis Robert Jr., who just returned from the injured list Monday after missing more than two months with a spine issue, is generating preliminary trade interest from multiple teams, according to a person briefed on the situation," Sammon and Rosenthal report.

Nationals trading 2.68 ERA left-hander called 'inevitable' by MLB execs originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Washington Nationals are currently 51-51 on the regular season, 8.0 games back in the NL East, and only 1.5 games out of the NL Wild Card.
But, this team is not expected to be all-in buyers, nor all-out sellers. Instead, they're more likely to sell a few pieces who are on expiring deals, but keep CJ Abrams-type players under control. With that in mind, one trade candidate comes to mind as likely to move.
Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that rival MLB executives believe that the Nationals trading away 2.68 ERA left-hander Foster Griffin is "inevitable" this summer.
"Some rival executives believe a Foster Griffin trade is inevitable," Rosenthal and Sammon write. "The Washington Nationals, however, are still ****** sing whether to deal, extend or keep the starting pitcher through the end of the season, according to people familiar with the club's thinking who were granted anonymity to speak freely."

Another day, another chance for the Tarik Skubal rumor mill to kick into high gear.
Here's the latest buzz on the Detroit Tigers left-hander as the Aug. 3 trade deadline approaches.
"The Tigers are at least mulling the possibility of securing a package for Skubal that potentially would keep them strong in the present while making them stronger for the future," The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon reported Wednesday.
"The way they would do it, according to two rival executives briefed on the Tigers' thinking, is by trading Skubal for a controllable starting pitcher plus quality prospects," Rosenthal and Sammon added.
According to the report, that leaves the following clubs in the mix: the Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers, Philadelphia Phillies, Tampa Bay Rays, Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees.

Mariners' $22.75 million All-Star is 'most likely' starter to be traded originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
You can never have enough pitching.
But what if those pitchers can help you improve other parts of your roster?
That's what the Seattle Mariners have to decide before the Aug. 3 trade deadline. Whether or not to trade one of their starters for an impact bat.
The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon wrote Thursday that the Mariners' top trade candidate from the rotation is a three-time All-Star with a 4.79 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 82.2 innings this season.

Nothing has gone right for the New York Mets this season. But at least they won't be wrong about one of their decisions ahead of the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline.
The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon report the last-place Mets aren't likely to trade right-hander Jonah Wong.
"While executives from different teams suggested the Mets would attract suitors if they put Tong on the market, New York likes him too much to do so, which makes any trade seemingly unlikely," Rosenthal and Sammon wrote Thursday.
Tong made three spring bullpen appearances for the Mets, going 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 10 innings of work.
Currently, Tong is with Triple-A Syracuse, where he is 1-5 with a 7.23 ERA in 14 starts. Yes, he has 74 strikeouts in 61 innings of work down on the farm this year. But he also has 36 walks and ugly 5.3 BB/9.

With a 37-53 record that has them just a half-game ahead of the worst record in the National League, the Mets are set to be sellers at the deadline. And Will Sammon of the Athletic and Chelsea Janes of SNY have provided some insight into the organization’s thinking as the August 3 trade deadline approaches.
Sammon writes that teams will be interested in trading for one of the Mets’ catchers, but he sees a move of either Francisco Alvarez or Luis Torrens as unlikely. He also brings up the question of whether or not the team will trade Luke Weaver, who is under team control through the end of the 2027 season on a $12.5 million salary. And he mentions that the team is expected to trade Brooks Raley and A.J Minter, while noting that it seems very unlikely that Bo Bichette will be dealt given his underwhelming season, massive salary, and no-trade clause.
Janes mentions some of the same names in writing that players on expiring contracts will be available, adding Freddy Peralta, Clay Holmes, and Tyrone Taylor to the aforementioned pair of left-handed relievers. She says that the Mets will prioritize getting the best players in return—regardless of how close they are to the big leagues or what position they play. She floats the idea of other relievers like Huascar Brazobán and Devin Williams having appeal on the trade market, and she writes that the Mets aren’t in a rush to start making trades, as front offices are heavily focused on the upcoming amateur draft.

Mets to sign former Cubs and Rays standout slugger to new contract originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
With the New York Mets still struggling to get much of anything going this season, it's getting to the point where the Mets should seriously consider selling this season by the August 3 trade deadline.
But that doesn't mean the Mets can't add to their roster in hopes of finding pieces for the future. If they sell, there will be open roster spots, and using those on intriguing players who might not otherwise have an MLB roster spot would be a smart move.
That's one reason for their most recent addition. As Will Sammon of The Athletic reports, the Mets are signing former Chicago Cubs and Tampa Bay Rays standout slugger Christopher Morel to a new contract.
"The Mets and Christopher Morel are in agreement on a minor-league deal, league sources tell The Athletic," Sammon reports. "The deal contains multiple opt-outs for Morel, who will report to Triple-A Syracuse."
