An early look at the Madden 27 ratings is here, and there are some surprises for fans.
One of those comes when taking a look at the highest-rated rookies in the game. There are several recognizable names among that grouping, and unsurprisingly, every name on the list was selected in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. However, there is one prominent player selected in the first round this year that was shockingly omitted from the top 10 rated rookies.
Despite capturing the Heisman Trophy last year and being selected by the Las Vegas Raiders as the No. 1 overall draft pick, Fernando Mendoza was not among the top 10 rated rookies in the new game. The cut-off to make that list was a 78 overall rating, while Mendoza only sits at a 74 overall – missing the top 10 by just a few points.
But reports indicate that the franchise plans to run with Kirk Cousins as the starter this year, so his rating should reflect that he may not make as big an impact in his rookie season. And no one is going to care about his Madden rating in July if he does make the field and plays well this season. It is just a game, after all.
But someone has to be among the top 10 rated rookies in the game, so who made that list? Well, at the top of the list was running back Jeremiyah Love, the third overall selection in the draft by the Arizona Cardinals. Love procured an 82 overall rating in the game. Joining him with an 82 rating was safety Caleb Downs, who was picked by the Dallas Cowboys with the 11th overall pick in the draft.

Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl officials are celebrating 50 years of competition this year and they're doing it in a big way.
The organization is releasing the top 50 all-time players in I-Bowl history and they're releasing them in five-player increments. The list was voted on by a local panel of media members, including the Shreveport Times, and I-Bowl representatives.
The latest group of Nos. 36-40 on the all-time list include Bossier High/Louisiana Tech standout Weldon Brown and one of the most recognizable names to play in the I-Bowl in Virginia's Tiki Barber.

Barber might be one of the biggest household names on the all-time list, but before turning himself into the 14th greatest New York Giant of all-time, he played in the 1994 I-Bowl against TCU. He had three carries for 18 yards, three receptions for 2 yards and an 18-yard kickoff return. Barber had a highly successful college career for the Cavaliers, as evidenced by his No. 21 jersey being retired by Virginia, his selection to the ACC's 50th Anniversary Team, and his induction into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2011. Barber was named ACC Player of the Year in 1996 after rushing for 1,360 yards and 14 touchdowns (TDs). Drafted in the second round of the 1997 NFL Draft, he turned himself into the Giants' all-time leading rusher — rushing for 10,449 yards in his career. He was named first-team All-Pro in 2005 when he rushed for 1,860 yards and nine TDs, while also adding 54 receptions for 530 yards. Also a three-time Pro Bowler, Barber was inducted into the Giants Ring of Honor in 2010.

ESPN parted ways with Ryan Clark on Monday in an awkward on-air dismissal during "NFL Live." On Tuesday, more layoffs swept through Bristol, and former NFL MVP Cam Newton was among those let go.
The move sparked an immediate pile-on from the NFL community on X, with fans and media personalities believing that firing Newton was the right decision, and some even brought up his viral comments on Buffalo Bills wide receiver Keon Coleman from the 2025 season.
Newton wasn't the only recognizable face to get fired on Tuesday. NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, longtime **** yst Charles Davis, NFL **** yst Bart Scott, SportsCenter anchor David Lloyd, injury and fantasy expert Stephania Bell, and MLB play-by-play announcer Karl Ravech were all let go as part of the cuts.

Dan Ives logs into the Zoom call in a loud, tropical shirt, the word "Margaritaville" splashed across the chest. The Toronto Blue Jays do not need to chase the loudest MLB trade deadline headline. They need a fifth starter. That sounds boring. Good. Boring is exactly how smart teams actually fix themselves. The Blue Jays have enough recognizable names on the roster that it is easy to imagine a bigger, flashier deadline move. An impact bat would be exciting. A late-inning reliever would make sense.
Those are the types of additions that create buzz and feel like immediate upgrades. But Toronto’s clearest need is less dramatic than that, and it starts with stabilizing the back end of the rotation.

The top of the Blue Jays’ rotation is fine enough to compete. That is not the issue. The issue is what happens after that. The No. 5 spot has been unstable, and the injuries have made the margin even thinner. José Berríos and Cody Ponce are done for the year. Max Scherzer has been back on the injured list. So why are we pretending this is complicated? Toronto needs someone who can take the ball every fifth day and not tax the bullpen into a crime scene by the fourth inning. Conference realignment has turned college athletics into a much more national endeavor than it ever was previously. The Big Ten stretches from southern California to New Jersey. The ACC includes a pair of teams on the Pacific coast. And the Big 12 has members located in both the deserts of the southwest and the mountains of Appalachia. The end result is something almost entirely unrecognizable from college sports just a decade ago.
Most fans would agree that it would behoove college sports to return to some semblance of regionality, where schools in neighboring states play each other more often than schools on opposite coasts. Whether such a return is in the cards isn't exactly clear, but it's something that NCAA president Charlie Baker would welcome. During an appearance on Face The Nation this weekend, Baker outlined that he sensed a willingness among schools to embrace a more regional approach for non-football sports.
When asked if he felt conference realignment was nearing its end, Baker first suggested that the expiration of TV contracts ultimately will determine future shifts, but then pivoted to change he sees on the horizon with regard to non-football sports.
"The real question there is when does everybody's TV contracts come up, and what will that mean with respect to how they get negotiated at that point in time? Because everybody's obviously living with the terms and conditions ****** ociated with those," Baker said.
"I will say this. Most of the conversation I've heard among schools, at least at the Division I level, is whether they should try and figure out some way to create a more regional approach to sports other than football. Because football is, depending upon the conference, the league, and the program, somewhere between 11 and 14 games in a season, whereas you have many other sports, men's and women's sports, where you play, literally, 30, 40, 50, 60 games. And I think the conversation people have started to have is whether or not there's a way to think a little differently about how to schedule the football stuff than the way you schedule some of the other sports. Football's once a week, right? And it's usually over a weekend. A lot of these other sports, you're playing midweek, you're playing the weekends, and those sports, the travel question becomes a much bigger challenge and a bigger issue than it is for just football."
