Microsoft (MSFT) stock rocketed 14% higher on Thursday after posting better-than-anticipated earnings results powered by strong growth in its Copilot and Azure offerings. The company also tamed its spending a hair, saying it is extending the useful life of some data centers and offices, helping to move that spending out of capex.
It's a different story for Meta (META), though. Shares of the social media giant fell more than 9% in early trading as the company failed to provide spending guidance for 2027 and its cash pile dwindled.
Qualcomm (QCOM) stock also slid despite beating expectations on revenue for the quarter, as slowing smartphone sales bit into its outlook.
Up next, Amazon (AMZN) and Apple (AAPL) will report their results after the bell today, as investors look for more insights into Amazon's spending and the impact of the memory shortage on Apple's bottom line.
Microsoft (MSFT) surged more than 15% in early trading on Thursday.

O'Keeffe Stevens Advisory, an investment advisory firm, released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. During Q2 2026, the market experienced notable dispersion between perceived AI losers and winners. The firm has made investments early in AI infrastructure companies, which yielded gains during market repricing. The second quarter experienced strong equity rallies, with the S&P 500 gaining 15.2% and the Nasdaq 21.4%, marking the best quarter since Q2 2020. While the software sector faced challenges, with the iShares Software ETF dropping ~27% before a rally, reflecting high volatility. This volatility is seen as an opportunity, despite the potential for 'dead money' in underperforming stocks. The firm remains cautious, focuses on owning durable businesses at reasonable prices, holding cash, and hedging risks to navigate unpredictability. In addition, please check the Strategy's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, O'Keeffe Stevens Advisory highlighted QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM). QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) is a semiconductor and communication technology company focusing on the development and commercialization of foundational technologies for the wireless industry. On July 27, 2026, QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) closed at $170.04 per share. One-month return of QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) was -7.98%, and its shares gained 4.91% over the past 52 weeks. QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) has a market capitalization of $179.22 billion.
O'Keeffe Stevens Advisory stated the following regarding QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) in its Q2 2026 investor update:
"QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) and Corning both appreciated materially in Q2. We trimmed both positions using a combination of options and stock sales.
Qualcomm faced a long-standing structural challenge: customer concentration in Apple, which is internally developing its own modem and transitioning away from Qualcomm silicon. Qualcomm hosted an investor day in June, with all eyes focused on their AI and datacenter strategy. Qualcomm has long been seen as a loser in AI stemming from higher memory prices driving down phone demand, and in turn QCOM's handset business. Qualcomm's diversiQcation strategy continues to play out. At the investor day, Qualcomm doubled its Qscal 2029 non-handset revenue goal to $40 billion, liVed its automotive revenue target to $10 billion, and struck a deal with Meta to supply data center CPUs for AI infrastructure, with production of its Dragonby C1000 slated for 2028. We trimmed due to the position becoming oversized in the portfolio, and risk/reward was no longer as attractive."

Chipmaker Qualcomm (QCOM) will report its third quarter earnings on Wednesday, giving investors a closer look at the impact the global memory shortage is having on smartphone sales and the status of the company's upcoming data center segment.
Qualcomm is working to diversify its business to reduce its dependence on its handset business, which has slowed over the years, as customers hold on to their phones for longer before upgrading.
And with smartphone makers increasing prices to offset the rising cost of memory and storage chips caused by the global AI build-out, the handset market is looking rough.
"The smartphone industry is not great," Bernstein ***** yst Stacy Rasgon told Yahoo Finance's Julie Hyman on Wednesday.
"Memory prices are going up, and AI is sort of sucking up a lot of the supply. And so it's just not leaving a lot for the smartphone players. And we're seeing unit growth has gone negative," he added.

What happened: Semiconductor stocks fell on Tuesday, with the PHLX Semiconductor Index (^SOX) falling more than 3% as investors continued to unwind positions in one of the market's hottest AI-driven sectors this year.
US-listed shares of memory and storage leaders Micron Technology (MU), SK Hynix (SKHY), and Sandisk (SNDK) all fell more than 8% and 13%, respectively. Among the semiconductor equipment makers, ASML (ASML), Applied Materials (AMAT), and Lam Research (LRCX) also dropped.
AI chip heavyweight Nvidia (NVDA) stock reversed early morning losses to climb into green territory following a 5% drop on Monday. Peer AMD (AMD) fell more than 7%. Chip maker Intel (INTC), along with Marvell (MRVL) and Qualcomm (QCOM), also slid.
What's behind the move: The sell-off followed declines in semiconductor stocks abroad. In South Korea, SK Hynix fell more than 14%, while Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) dropped more than 13%.
European semiconductor stocks also moved lower as concerns about circular financing and intensifying competition from China have weighed on the sector.

The chipmaker sent shareholders a fortune in cash, yet the stock itself went nowhere fast. Here's what owners actually got for their patience and what the trade-off really cost them.
Qualcomm (QCOM)'s stock has seen better days, trading around $170.32 a share after a recent 25% pullback from its one-month high. But behind the stock chart's noise is a much simpler story: the company has been a quiet, large cash-return machine. Over the last five years, Qualcomm handed back $43 billion to its owners through dividends and buybacks, an amount equal to 24% of its entire current market value. The question for any investor is whether that cash was a reward for a great business or a consolation prize for a stock that dramatically lagged the market.
The company's cash machine is built on two very different engines.
That $43 billion gusher, which dwarfs the $5.7 billion returned by the median S&P 500 company over the same period, comes from a business with formidable profitability. Qualcomm's operating margin over the last twelve months was 26%, well above the index median of 18.4%. The cash is generated by its two core segments: QCT, which designs the Snapdragon chipsets that power countless smartphones and, increasingly, cars and other connected devices; and QTL, its high-margin technology licensing arm.
Of the total returned to shareholders, $26 billion came from share repurchases, and another $17 billion was paid out as dividends. This is the financial brute force that underpins the investment case: a mature, highly profitable business dedicated to rewarding its owners.

Memory and storage giant Micron Technology (MU) has been one of the standout beneficiaries of the artificial intelligence (AI) boom, delivering massive triple-digit gains so far in 2026. Now, the red-hot chip stock is back in focus after the company announced a series of strategic customer agreements aimed at expanding its presence in the rapidly evolving automotive technology market. On Thursday, Micron revealed strategic customer agreements (SCAs) with several major automotive and technology players, including Qualcomm (QCOM), Visteon (VC), Harman, JOYNEXT, Denso, Astemo, and Hyundai Mobis.
The partnerships come as increasingly connected and intelligent vehicles require more advanced memory and storage solutions to power everything from sophisticated infotainment systems to AI-enabled features. Micron Chairman, President, and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra emphasized that memory and storage will play an increasingly important role as vehicles become smarter and more technologically advanced. He noted that the new agreements should help ensure next-generation automotive platforms have the capabilities needed to support richer, safer, and more intelligent in-vehicle experiences. With Micron already riding strong AI-driven demand and now deepening its ties across the automotive ecosystem, could this latest development add another catalyst to MU stock?

Qualcomm (QCOM) has multiple, potential, strong, positive catalysts due to its exposure to the fast-growing auto chip and Internet of Things (IoT) sectors. Still, since the firm is facing tough competition in these areas, its catalysts may not turn out to be as powerful as some expect. Meanwhile, high flash-memory prices could put a big dent in the company's revenue from smartphone sales in the shorter term. Since smartphone sales in the company's last completed fiscal year generated about 63% of its overall revenue, the shares' overall outlook in the short-to-medium term is quite uncertain.
Indeed, Citi is cautious about the company's short-term outlook, as the bank recently placed "a downside Catalyst Watch" on the name "based on the potential weakness" of its smartphone sales.

Many technology companies were off to the races when the AI boom first started, but Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) initially seemed slow to adapt.
Not anymore. The company has shifted its strategy toward artificial intelligence processors, applying its existing knowledge of edge computing to AI. It recently made a nearly $4 billion acquisition of an AI company to expand its reach for data center tech. No wonder its shares are up 66% over the past three months.
