NEW YORK - Amid a troubling stretch for the Houston Astros rotation, an ace restored order. Fourteen games elapsed without an Astros starter finishing six innings before Hunter Brown took the mound at Citi Field on Friday. Half of those games saw their starter work 4 ⅓ innings or fewer, taxing a bullpen showing signs of strain. The rotation posted a 5.64 ERA in that span. Just two teams had a higher one.
The formula feels unsustainable for a team with playoff aspirations, but nor are solutions apparent for this team's pitching instability. Houston has three starters in which it shows trust. One, Peter Lambert, already is nearing a career-high innings total. Another, Hayden Wesneski, has not surpassed 91 pitches yet in six starts back from elbow surgery.
With both Cristian Javier and Tatsuya Imai - the two highest-paid starters on their roster - rested, the Astros will deploy an opener Saturday against the Mets. Bennett Sousa will draw the **** ignment, two days after a messy seventh inning at Yankee Stadium. Javier and Imai would ostensibly be available for bulk innings, but Imai has been on ice, appearing in three games this month.
Houston's bullpen has essentially been operating a man short as a result, magnifying the workload its regular relievers have shouldered. Steven Okert entered Friday with the third-most outings among AL relievers and AJ Blubaugh with the most relief innings in the majors. Okert, Enyel De Los Santos and Bryan Abreu were all among the 33 relievers in the league with at least 52 appearances.
Maintaining key arms for a playoff push is desirable, but the Astros' lack of cushion - a two-game lead over Texas in the AL West after their 3-1 win Friday - complicates strategic rest. So does the rotation's recent lack of reliability, forcing them to rely heavily on leverage relievers to secure wins. Getting more from that group seems critical over the final 27 games of their season.

Following their series win over the Yankees, the Houston Astros (67-67) travel across town to open a weekend series tonight against the New York Mets (60-74). Houston holds a one-game lead over the Rangers and a three-game lead over the Mariners in the AL West while the Mets continue to hold down the cellar in the NL East.
The Astros arrive in Queens after a 5-1 series-clinching win last night over the Yankees. three-game series in the Bronx against the Yankees. Hayden Wesneski allowed a single run over five innings to pick up his fourth win in five decisions while Jeremy Pena and Christian Walker each went yard to lead the offense. The Mets enter Friday's opener after dropping the final two games in their three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers. The offense was non-existent for the entire series scoring just six total runs. The pitching failed the last two days allowing 16 runs. Jacob Misiorowski was more than good enough for the Brewers yesterday, allowing a couple of runs over six innings. The Mets totaled three hits for the game.
Hunter Brown (3-3, 3.51 ERA) takes the ball for the Astros tonight. Shoulder issues have limited Brown this season to just 14 starts but his last two have met the expectations the Astros have for their ace. In 10.2 innings, the righthander has struck out nine and allowed three runs. Houston, though, lost both those games and have in fact lost each of his last four starts. The Mets are sending Christian Scott (4-3, 3.73) to the mound. The Mets have won the righthander's last four starts despite so-so outings by Scott. Last Saturday against the White Sox, Scott lasted just 4.2 innings allowing four runs on five hits. The week before he allowed three runs over 6.1 innings against the Nationals.

Unless the Royals winning streak had hit 25 games, they weren't going to make the playoffs. And so they fell 16 games short of it. So what? That was quite the enjoyable stretch of baseball, and despite losing last night, I'm looking forward to tonight's game.
Noah Cameron is back on the mound.
Cameron became one of the team's highlights last year when helped keep the season afloat. He struggled at the start of this season, but he's been incredible through his last six outings, five of them starts, one a long relief appearance. In those six outings, Cameron's tossed 42-and-2/3 innings, allowed just five earned runs, good for a 1.05 ERA and 2.31 FIP, as he's struck out 36 batters, hit one of them, walked only 12 batters, and surrendered 15 hits, none of which have left the yard.
The Royals went 3-3 in those games.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will wrap up their preseason slate Thursday, Aug. 27 with a visit to the Buffalo Bills and their brand new Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y.
The matchup will be a final showcase for young quarterbacks Drew Allar and Will Howard before Aaron Rodgers takes command of the offensive huddle for the regular season. Both are looking to leave lasting positive impressions after excellent outings in the opener against Green Bay Packers, then comparative duds last week against the New York Jets.
Howard threw a pair of interceptions as the starter last time out. The mistakes short-circuited drives that had reached deep into New York territory. Allar, meanwhile, battled receiver drops, penalties and his own indecision en route to a scoreless second half for the offense.

Bayern Munich have confirmed that Felipe Chavez has joined 1. FC Magdeburg on loan.
The 19-year-old youth prospect will spend the 2026/27 campaign with the 2. Bundesliga club as he looks to gain more regular first-team experience.
"'Pippo' Chávez took the next step in his development with his outings for 1. FC Köln and should now gain more regular playing time at Magdeburg," said FC Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund.
"We have extended his contract because we are convinced of his potential for the future."

Manchester City defender Nico O'Reilly succeeded Morgan Rogers to become the 2026 men's Young Player of the Year at the Professional Footballers' ******* ociations awards.
The 21-year-old paid tribute to former boss Pep Guardiola, who gave the youngster his City debut in 2024.
"Pep was a great manager. He put his trust in me, which I can only be grateful for. He helped me so much on the pitch and off the pitch as a person. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be sat in this position right now. Thank you to him," said O'Reilly.

If not for hip/glute injuries costing him about half of June and most of July, Culpepper would have taken over as the Twins' shortstop earlier this season. As is, he had to wait until Aug. 7, but he's made the most of his time since, hitting .340/.382/.480 with two homers in 55 plate appearances.
Culpepper, the 21st overall pick in the 2024 draft, was brought up after hitting .271/.367/.478 with 14 homers and 17 steals in 74 games for Triple-A St. Paul. In spite of that impressive line, he didn't draw much initial interest in shallow leagues, probably in part because he was going to be hitting at the bottom of the lineup for a mediocre offense. And that is an issue; through 14 games, Culpepper has totaled four RBI and six runs scored even with his impressive start. But he already has a case for moving up to the top third of the order. Culpepper offers above average bat speed and solid plate discipline. He might not have superstar potential, but he has a good chance of becoming an above average regular for a long time.

To make an impact in mixed leagues in the short term, Culpepper probably will need to do some running. He's quite capable, having gone 46-for-54 stealing bases in 213 career minor league games. With the stakes higher and the pitchers typically better at holding runners close, it often takes time for prospects to become comfortable trying steals in major league games. If Culpepper doesn't get there this year, he'll probably remain a fringe option. Still, he has a higher ceiling than he gets credit for.
I didn't expect to be writing about Bassitt this week, but then, I didn't think Bassitt would come out firing 94-mph sinkers Tuesday against the Cardinals. In 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball, he averaged 93.4 mph with the pitch. That's his highest mark since one start in May 2024. He hasn't regularly been in that territory since 2022. Maybe it'll turn out to be a fluke, but he was also better than his season average in his first two starts back from back surgery. He averaged 92.2 mph in those outings, which is higher than he's typically been since 2024.

SEATTLE (AP) — Cal Raleigh tied a team record with homers in four straight at-bats, George Kirby pitched one-run ball into the eighth inning and Seattle Mariners beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 on Tuesday night.
Raleigh led off the second inning against Philadelphia's Aaron Nola with a 362-foot shot to right field for his 18th homer of the season. It was his first time up after also homering in all three of his at-bats in a 9-2 win against the Phillies on Monday, matching the Seattle record of homers in four consecutive at-bats set by Mike Cameron on May 2, 2002.
Kirby (9-10) gave up one run on four hits and struck out nine in 7 2/3 innings. Jose Ferrer got the last out in the eighth and Andrés Muñoz pitched the ninth for his 24 save in 32 chances.
Nola (5-10) got the loss, allowing two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts over six innings.
Kirby was coming off a couple of tough outings, including giving up six first-inning runs in his last start against the Brewers. It looked as if he might be in trouble again when he allowed three straight singles in the second inning, including an RBI hit by Justin Crawford. Instead, Kirby got out of the jam and cruised the rest of the way.

Last night, the Athletics fell to 19-39 at Sutter Health Park after dropping the series-opener against the Minnesota Twins, 9-6. Starter Jeffrey Springs struggled once again, and the offense's last-ditch rally came a few runs short. Tonight presents an opportunity for the last-place A's to earn their 20th home win and force a rubber match tomorrow.
Rookie left-hander Gage Jump will be on the ***** p this evening for the home team. The 23-year-old enters his 17th start of the season with a 5-8 record, a 4.83 ERA, a 1.51 WHIP and 88 strikeouts over 82 innings. Jump has endured some turbulence lately, going 2-4 with a 6.75 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP over his past seven starts. In his most recent outing against the Kansas City Royals, Jump took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits over four innings.
This evening, the A's would greatly appreciate a quality start from Jump in his first career appearance against the Twins. Through his first several MLB starts, Jump has alternated between stellar outings that have the team envisioning a future with him near the top of the rotation and poor performances that highlight the youngster's areas for growth as he adjusts to major league hitters. It would be beneficial for Jump to finish the season strong, although the team must be mindful of his workload to avoid increasing the southpaw's injury risk.

From the jump, this lineup sets the A's up well defensively. Tommy White is a better fit at first base, as last night's bunt debacle showed he is a bit stretched at the other infield corner.

Atlanta Falcons rookie quarterback Jack Strand was so good against the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday that head coach Kevin Stefanski found himself fielding questions about whether or not Strand was competing for the team's QB1 job.
Stefanski's answer might have left the door open, but Strand isn't realistically pushing for the QB1 job at the moment. The comments were likely a result of Tua Tagovailoa's underwhelming play and the fact that Michael Penix Jr. has just one 11-on-11 practice under their belt.
We'd be shocked if Strand ends up starting any games for Altanta this year, but he was admittedly spectacular against the Colts - good enough to earn an "A" grade from Carter Bahns at CBS Sports.
"The Falcons might just have something in Jack Strand. He arrived in Atlanta as a relative unknown, having gone undrafted out of Division II Minnesota State–Moorhead, but he made a name for himself in two preseason outings. Following the rushing touchdown he logged in Week 1, Strand erupted for 212 passing yards, a touchdown and another score on the ground in a drubbing of the Colts. He and Cooper Rush combined to complete 16 of their first 17 throws, and his rushing ability (22 yards on nine carries) is obvious and differentiates him in the battle for the No. 3 quarterback job."
While it's a remote scenario, the Falcons can't afford to stay on their current course if it's not working out. Right now the plan should be to start Tua Tagovailoa or Michael Penix Jr. the first month of the season - and if he doesn't impress then the other should get the ball until midseason.

It was a tumultuous weekend for the Yankees. Cody Bellinger returned Sunday, providing a much-needed jolt to a lineup that's been anemic in his and Aaron Judge's absences. But Giancarlo Stanton suffered a setback that could end his season (and, with it, perhaps his tenure in pinstripes). And Ryan Weathers, who had posted a 2.27 ERA in seven starts since the All-Star break, landed on the shelf with a forearm strain.
Amid the injury news, the Yankees quietly went on a heater, winning six of their last seven while taking series against two AL East foes, Baltimore and Toronto. This week, they'll be hosting the Astros, a team that just fired GM Dana Brown after dropping six of their last eight despite still tying for first place in a tight AL West. Let's take a look at the likely starting pitching matchups for this midweek set.
Tuesday: Will Warren vs. Ethan Pecko (7:05 pm ET)
Just over a week ago, it looked like Will Warren was about to lose his rotation spot, bouncing either to the bullpen or the minors upon Carlos Rodón's return. Now, with Max Fried and Weathers on the IL, he's the Yankees' No. 4 starter. After a strong start to the year he's struggled, going 1-1 with a 6.08 ERA since the All-Star break and turning in just one quality start since the end of May. Last time out, he needed 90 pitches to get through four innings of work in Baltimore, allowing six baserunners and two runs.
He's lined up to face Ethan Pecko. The right-hander will be pitching on his 24th birthday, six days after making his MLB debut against the Angels in which he allowed two runs in 3.2 innings. He featured a four-seamer and a sinker in that start, mixing in four complementary pitches. Pecko was 4-6 with a 4.94 ERA in 17 outings (15 starts) at Triple-A before getting the call.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Rafael Devers hit a three-run homer in the second inning and the San Francisco Giants snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Cincinnati Reds 5-0 on Monday night.
Jason Foley (1-1) worked 1 1/3 innings for the win after relieving lefty Carson Whisenhunt, who left in the third inning with pain in his pitching elbow. He was coming off an outing in which he surrendered a career-worst seven runs and nine hits over four innings of an 8-1 loss at Cleveland last Tuesday. He will have an MRI on Tuesday.
San Francisco leadoff hitter Drew Gilbert doubled in each of his first two at-bats on a cool night and well before the mist began hovering over the outfield in the middle innings.
The Giants began the game with four straight hits off right-hander Chase Burns (14-3), including Jung Hoo Lee's RBI single followed by a run-scoring double from Turner Hill in the first. Two of Burns' three losses this year have come in his last three outings.
There appeared to be no lingering ill will in the first meeting between the clubs since a three-game series at Cincinnati in mid-April that featured a benches-clearing brawl.

The White Sox week started by getting walked off on back-to-back nights, there was a midweek goose egg to lose a makeup game to Atlanta, and then the pitching gave up 10 runs to a Mets team that is well worse than .500. Oh, and not to mention, it's the middle of a 16-game stretch, so Chicago's pitching staff was extremely taxed.
So much so that when Will Venable was asked this week what the plan was for the North Side portion of the Crosstown Classic, he told reporters there wasn't one. I am no idiot. I know this was likely a half-truth. There had to be concepts of a plan. That plan was "The Opener."
Following a loss that was lead off by and ended by Pete Crow-Armstrong home runs, Bryan Hudson was tapped to start Tuesday's duel against the Cubs. He gave up a pair of homers in his opening inning before he turned it over to Erick Fedde for 4 2/3 innings of scoreless work. In the end, Huascar Brazobán and his one-third of an inning would be enough to lose Fedde the bid for the win and allow Alex Bregman to walk things off in the ninth.
Sean Newcomb opened the last game at Wrigley. He earned one more inning than Hudson did the day prior, keeping the game scoreless before turning things over to the bulk reliever. The strategy worked well for the White Sox, with José Urquidy going six innings and striking out eight Cubbies en route to a 3-0 victory to avoid a sweep. Sometimes veterans still have some of that young stud left in them. It's nice when they allow it to peak out in-between the past-their-prime outings.

Unfortunately for the Seattle Mariners, Bryce Miller just had one of the worst weeks in MLB history.
Miller got shelled in both of his outings last week, continuing a horrendous month of August for the 28-year-old right-hander.
On Tuesday, he allowed six runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings agains he Milaukee Brewers. The Mariners imploded after he left the game, losing 22-0 in one of the most lopsided defeats in MLB history.
Miller's outing on Sunday led to a similarly disastrous outcome. He surrendered six runs on wo his and seven walks in 4 1/3 innings versus the Chicago Cubs. Once again, Seattle collapsed after he departed, losing 19-2.

It was not easy, but the Tennessee **** ans raised their preseason record to 2-0 by defeating the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.
While a victory is always a good thing for a young franchise, the heavy lifting was done by players who will likely be on the practice squad or out of the league in a couple of weeks, and that dampens the feel. The **** ans' starters must play better in this third preseason game; there is no doubt about that.
While it was not a crisp outing by the first team, the reserves and special teams stepped up and led the comeback, and some players delivered down the stretch.
Here are a few things we learned from the victory.
Before both preseason games, the **** ans had some positive outings in joint practices against the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks, and there was tangible excitement from the results; unfortunately, that production didn't carry over into the games. Which begs the question about what can truly be taken from the game.

At a key time in the fantasy baseball calendar, we are unfortunately saddled with possibly the worst two-start pitcher group of the season. In fact, once we get past the top option, every other hurler may be best left for those in deep formats. On the hitting side, managers should load up on Rockies for the first half of the week.
Zac Thornton, Mets, 20% (vs. MIL, vs. HOU): Thornton continues to establish himself as a reliable major league rotation member and now sits at 3-4 with a 3.04 ERA and 1.13 WHIP after nine starts. The rookie struck out seven Padres in his most recent outing, which is a great sign from someone whose only weakness thus far has been an inability to accumulate whiffs. He unfortunately has a pair of matchups against top-10 teams in OPS versus righties, but at least both starts will take place at his pitcher-friendly home park.
Andrew Alvarez, Nationals, 7% (vs. COL, vs. MIA): Although Alvarez has enjoyed his best stretch of the season during August (2.42 ERA, 0.90 WHIP), the advanced stats (16:8 K:BB ratio, .169 BABIP) don't back up his success. In fact, the left-hander's strikeout rate this month (6.5 K/9) is notably lower than his season-long mark (8.3). Alvarez deserves credit for consistency, as he has allowed more than three earned runs in just one of his 19 appearances. However, most of his outings last less than five innings. He has reasonable matchups and the two-start options are poor this week, which makes him worth consideration as a low-floor, low-ceiling option in deeper formats.
Max Scherzer, Blue Jays, 6% (vs. KC, vs. SEA): After enjoying three consecutive strong starts, Scherzer faltered (4 IP, 7 ER) last time out. The outing wasn't quite as bad as the stat line indicates, as a pair of misplayed fly ***** by Jesús Sánchez ruined the right-hander's chances. Scherzer wouldn't normally rank as a viable two-start option, but he has had enough success of late to warrant consideration for two home starts against teams that rank 22nd (Royals) and 30th (Mariners) in runs scored.
Seth Lugo, Royals, 24% (@ TOR, @ CLE): Lugo opened the second half by posting a 2.37 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over three starts, but his 10:6 K:BB ratio in those outings showed that he hadn't truly turned around a poor season. Sure enough, the 36-year-old came crashing back to earth with a 7.48 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in his past four outings. Lugo has favorable matchups this week, as the Blue Jays (28th) and Guardians (26th) sit near the bottom of baseball in runs scored. That's the only reason to select him over those who trail him on this list.

The Blues are preparing for Neto to potentially leave Stamford Bridge, with several sides pushing to secure his signature this summer.
Chelsea have now turned to his Portugal international (21 caps) teammate, who has caught the eye with his ability to constantly threaten in the final third.
Conceicao bagged four goals and five ******* ists in 42 appearances last term after seven goals and six ******* ists in fewer outings the season before.

Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Edwin Diaz was signed to be the team's closer, but when he comes back from the injured list, he will not be in that role.
Diaz had elbow surgery early in the season, leading to months on the injured list.
He was out from April until late July after Diaz had loose bodies removed from his right arm. When he finally returned, things were not good for Diaz.
During the month of August, he had a 15.88 ERA, with three blown saves and two poor outings in non-save situations.

Crystal Palace are making a serious push to sign Soungoutou Magassa from West Ham United, with negotiations now at an active stage. Journalist Fabrice Hawkins confirmed the report, revealing the Eagles have maintained contact with West Ham for a considerable period to get their heads around the structure of a potential deal, and they are now ready to push it across the line.
Magassa himself is keen. That is very significant. West Ham, following their relegation to the EFL Championship last season, are under mounting pressure to shift players on significant Premier League wages, and the 22-year-old defensive midfielder sits right at the top of that list. Several other clubs have also registered interest, which makes this a race against time for Palace to secure their man before a rival steps in.
Fabrice Hawkins, who broke the story, noted that negotiations are continuing with no deal yet confirmed.
Magassa joined West Ham from Monaco roughly a year ago for around €17 million. Across the 2025/26 season, he made 26 appearances in all competitions, including 22 Premier League outings, starting 11 of those, and clocked 989 minutes. He scored against Manchester United. For a young player settling into English football, those aren't numbers to sniff at.

Daniel Palencia had a good year as Cubs closer in 2025 despite some injury issues. He had more time on the IL this year, first with an oblique strain and then a flexor injury.
Today, the Cubs activated Palencia from the injured list after five rehab outings, the last two of which were pretty good. He is not expected to immediately return to the closer role, instead serving as what manager Craig Counsell calls an "out-getter" in whatever situation he's needed. Overall this year in 19 MLB games, Palencia has a 2.70 ERA, 1.380 WHIP, three saves and 19 strikeouts in 16.2 innings.
To make room for Palencia on the 26-man active roster, right-hander Javier ******* ad has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa. I don't need to explain to you how this makes most Cubs fans feel. The only thing I can say is that ******* ad is likely back on Sept. 1 when rosters expand.
In addition, the Cubs added infielder Gabriel Arias, acquired Wednesday on waivers from the Mets, to the 26-man active roster. To make room for Arias, infielder Owen Miller was designated for ******* ignment. He's likely to clear waivers and will almost certainly be given the opportunity to remain in the organization.

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced that Emmet Sheehan, the promising right-hander, is headed back to the minor leagues after a brief stint with the team.
Sheehan, after getting moved down when Tarik Skubal arrived, had two outings down in Triple-A before coming back to the Dodgers recently for a long relief role.
However, the team is reversing course and giving him another chance to work down in the minors, likely as a starter.
LA needed bullpen pitching badly a few days ago after their key arms were taxed. Sheehan was supposed to help give some quality innings in bulk.

The Philadelphia Phillies signed veteran left-handed pitcher Nestor Cortes to a contract.
At the time, it was reported that Cortes was signing an MLB deal with the Phillies; however, that isn't the case. The ******* ociated Press reported on Thursday that it's a split deal with different salaries when Cortes is in the minors compared to the MLB.
"Former All-Star left-hander Nestor Cortes agreed to a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, a deal that will pay him $1.5 million while in the major leagues and $250,000 while in the minors," the article read. "Cortes agreed to be optioned to Class-A Clearwater as part of the deal announced Wednesday. Right-hander Brian Keller was designated for ******* ignment to open a 40-man roster spot."
With Cortes agreeing to a split contract, there is no rush for him to get to the MLB. Instead, he could be built up over a few outings before reaching the MLB in a month or so. He also agreed to be optioned to Class-A as part of the deal.
Cortes was an All-Star in 2022 and is entering his ninth MLB season. He made his MLB debut in 2018 with the Baltimore Orioles.

The Yankees (71-55) and the Orioles (61-66) conclude their three-game AL East series tonight at Camden Yards. With wins in the first two games, New York has pulled to within five games of first-place Tampa Bay in the AL East. Baltimore opened the series sitting in the final Wild Card spot but now are 1.5 games behind the Twins for a postseason berth.
Last night the Yankees won, 5-3. Along the way, they may have gotten a little help from the umpires. More on that in a moment. The Orioles struck first in unusual fashion in the bottom of the first. Jackson Holliday stole home to give Baltimore an early 1-0 lead. New York answered quickly. In the second inning, Ryan McMahon delivered an RBI single that scored Jazz Chisholm Jr., tying the game before being thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double. Moments later, George Lombard Jr. hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Spencer Jones to give the Yankees a 2-1 advantage. The Yankees extended the lead in the third when Ben Rice launched a 447-foot solo homer to right-center field, his 34th home run of the season. Baltimore responded immediately as Pete Alonso crushed a 423-foot homer of his own in the bottom half, trimming the deficit to 3-2. The game remained close into the sixth inning when Orioles outfielder Dylan Beavers tied the score at 3-3 with a solo homer to left-center.
The pivotal and controversial moment arrived in the seventh. Alonso thought he had given Baltimore the lead with a deep drive down the left-field line. The ball clearly looked to tuck inside the foul pole but was ruled foul...even after review. Instead of taking a 4-3 lead, the Orioles remained tied, and the Yankees took advantage in the eighth inning. In the top of the eighth, New York loaded the bases and grabbed the lead when Lombard Jr. beat out an infield single, scoring Heliot Ramos. Moments later, Orioles reliever Yennier Cano uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Jazz Chisholm Jr. to score an insurance run and give the Yankees a 5-3 advantage. The Yankees bullpen closed the door from there. Brent Headrick earned the victory with a scoreless seventh, while David Bednar recorded his 29th save with a clean ninth inning.
Tonight's pitching matchup features a couple of veteran righthanders in Gerrit Cole (6-6, 3.22 ERA) and Kyle Bradish (7-11, 3.65 ERA). After missing last season and the first couple of months this season following Tommy John surgery, Cole has been an ace over his last four starts allowing a mere four earned runs across 24.2 innings. As good as he has been, the Yankees' bats have rarely supported him, though, as New York has lost four of his last seven starts. Bradish has also been stingy over the past couple of months. The righthander has allowed two or fewer earned runs in his last three starts and in five of his last six outings. The O's have won four of his last six starts.

In the midst of a slump, especially at the plate, the Braves were hoping that Tyler Mahle could delicer another strong start to help the Braves tie up the series in Minneapolis.
There were 5 batted ****** over 100 MPH across both teams in the first inning, but two of the three against Mahle produced two runs, on a loud Jeffers double and a mammoth Bell homer. After that, Mahle generally struggled to miss bats, but didn't give up much loud contact and was extremely efficient, needing only 76 pitches to complete 6.2 innings, keeping the Twins at just the 2 runs with a little help from Dylan Dodd to strand a batter in the seventh. Only 3 strikeouts and 8 whiffs are well off of Mahle's previous two outings, but
The offense was characteristically quiet with very few baserunners until a Drake Baldwin homer broke the shutout in the sixth.
Harris and Albies singled with two outs in the frame as well, but the Braves were unable to tie up the game, as the Twins went to their bullpen. The offense had nothing going in the seventh or eighth and Dylan Dodd gave way to Didier Fuentes in the eighth with a runner on first. Didier left a couple of pitches over the heart of the plate and the Twins took them for a single and a double, tacking on a big two insurance runs for a 4-1 lead heading into the ninth. Michael Harris led off the ninth with a double, but the Braves were unable to do anything else in the inning.
This continues a string of games during which the offense has generally not been good enough. Other than Matt Olson, none of their hitters are performing particularly up to their standards at the moment and the team is just not playing well. They built quite a cushion early in the season, but this next stretch of games is one that could turn that around quickly if they don't step it up. The Rays lost another blowout tonight, one in their starter could not complete four innings and the subsequent relievers didn't offer much relief.
Nick Martinez….I don't know, I love the guy for so many reasons, but after his amazing first couple of months, it seems like every three, maybe even two outings is a clunker. The only good news is that best I can recall he's never had two clunkers in a row, so I look forward to him pitching 7 strong innings five days from now.
Tonight he put the Rays behind 4-0 early on, a homer, some doubles, yada yada yada
The Rays tried their "let's hit a bunch of singles and see what happens" approach and what happened was little, ergo the bases loaded one out third inning that ended with a double play.
And as often happens, after the Blue Jays retired the Rays without letting them score, they came back the next inning and yada yada yada 6-0.
