A Virginia mom is appealing a criminal charge and her placement on the state's child abuse and neglect registry after her 5-year-old son was stopped by security while walking alone through their gated community.
Karyann Parkinson said her son, Sam, had been walking along a familiar neighborhood path past a pond to collect goose feathers when a security guard encountered him and brought him home.
Police and Child Protective Services became involved, and Parkinson, who was eight months pregnant at the time, had her six-month jail sentence suspended, but the charge remains.

British right-wing political commentator Milo Yiannopoulos has been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and is awaiting deportation.
Yiannopoulos, 41, a former editor of Breitbart News and onetime employee of rapper Kanye West, appears to be held in Louisiana, according to ICE's inmate registry.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said he "was issued a final order of removal by an Immigration Judge on July 22, after failing to show up for his immigration hearing", and will remain in custody pending deportation.
The self-styled provocateur has called himself the "most fabulous supervillain on the internet". His critics call him a purveyor of hate speech.

We've written a TON in these pages about crime in our collectible corner of the world, but this week we published a piece that hit close to home. Mantel's Mike Metzler had a package with just-graded cards stolen, and through some admirable sleuthing, found a few of them cycling though the hobby.
And that alerted Mike to a problem worth solving- how can the hobby keep an eye out for stolen cards that pop up at shows and on marketplaces? So he teamed up with Nick Jarmin and the Certified Trading Card **** ociation (CTCA) to launch the Global Trading Card Registry.

CrowdStrike Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:CRWD) said on August 3 that a North Korea-linked adversary injected a malicious dependency into at least 131 Mastra AI framework packages on npm (Node Package Manager). Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) owns GitHub, which acquired npm in 2020 and operates the registry at the center of the attack chain.
This was a developer-supply-chain breach with unusually efficient distribution. Stolen maintainer credentials let the attacker publish poisoned Mastra versions tagged as the latest releases. The malicious easy-day-js dependency then ran during installation, exposing developer machines and build pipelines to credential theft and remote code execution. CrowdStrike found that 87% of identified software-registry threats in the first half of 2026 involved npm packages.

Microsoft's role cuts both ways. GitHub controls the registry infrastructure, and its advisory database powers npm audit, so repeated account takeovers increase the burden to harden publishing and dependency scanning. Yet Microsoft's own June 17 investigation identified more than 140 affected Mastra packages and detailed detections across Defender Antivirus, Defender for Endpoint and Defender XDR. The same incident that creates reputational risk for npm also gives Microsoft another reason to sell integrated security.
The more direct demand read-through belongs to CrowdStrike. Its fiscal Q1 2027 revenue grew 26% to $1.39 billion, while annual recurring revenue rose 24% to $5.51 billion. Hedge-fund ownership also increased to 79 portfolios at the end of Q1 2026 from 67 in Q4 2025, according to Insider Monkey's database. The valuation is the restraint: a roughly $190 billion market value equals about 32 times CrowdStrike's $5.91 billion to $5.96 billion fiscal-year revenue guidance. The business must sustain growth near the mid-20% range for that multiple to remain comfortable.

MUMBAI, July 24 (Reuters) - Indian banks and insurers will launch a common customer identification system in August, with **** et managers joining later, two regulatory sources and industry executives said, allowing customers to access financial products without separately submitting identification documents.
The new system, known as Central Know-Your-Customer 2.0 (CKYC), will only require the customer's consent for these institutions to fetch data stored at a central registry when opening an account or updating their details.
India has spent more than a decade trying to create a system similar to those in countries such as Singapore and several European nations, where digital identity frameworks allow customers to access multiple financial products through a common verification process.
It will also help combat fraud through easier monitoring, the regulatory sources said.

Another 91 babies also bear the full name Erling Haaland, it added. “Various football stars serve as inspiration for Peruvians when registering their children with these names,” said Ivan Torres, spokesperson for the registration office, in comments to 'Panamericana Television'.
According to Torres, most of the newborn Peruvians named after Haaland were registered in the weeks since the start of the World Cup. The numbers rose sharply when Norway reached the quarter-finals.
But Haaland is not the only football star adored in Peru. According to the civil registry, 3,402 children were named after Lionel Messi, 1,185 after Cristiano Ronaldo, 1,241 after Lamine Yamal, and as many as 33,809 children were named after Neymar.

They discovered that the name they had chosen in honor of Lionel Messi violated an obscure 1969 Argentina statute prohibiting the use of surnames as first names.

Almost five months after Bijou Phillips issued urgent plea for a kidney transplant donor, the story is getting its happy ending.
The model, 46, revealed in February that she had been hospitalized and was "in need of a kidney," asking for help in finding a donor. On July 7, she took to Instagram to share an update: She found the "perfect match" and has undergone a successful transplant.
"My wonderful brother donated in the kidney exchange!" she wrote. "He saved a life, and the life he saved had a special person donate for them, and then a few weeks later! The voucher program found me a perfect match! So close it's like I got the kidney from one of my parents!"
According to the National Kidney Registry, a kidney paired exchange occurs when a "donor will donate their kidney to another recipient in exchange for a compatible kidney for you."

Worthington resident Cory Fidler hit a once-in-a-lifetime golf shot during his work league round at Mental Memorial Golf Course in Columbus on June 25, his accomplishment even rarer than a hole-in-one.
Fidler is a project manager for the Ohio Department of Transportation and an 11.2 handicap. On the third hole, a par 5, he made his miraculous second shot from about 240 yards out for an albatross.
An article from the PGA in 2021 states that the odds of a golfer finishing a single hole three strokes under par are between one-million-to-one and six-million-to-one. The odds for an average golfer to make a hole-in-one are closer to 12,500 to 1, according to the National Hole-in-One Registry.
Playing from the white tees, Fidler was 513 yards from the hole on his tee shot. After landing in the rough with an imperfect lie, Fidler said he typically would lay up to the green. The golf cart's rangefinder read 243 yards from the pin.
"My golf partner is in the cart with me [and] is kind of razzing me to go for it," said Fidler. "So I pulled out the 3-wood. It was a little uphill stance, but hit it well. Not the best shot I've ever hit, but it was hit pretty well and right at the flag."
