The Blue Jackets are still negotiating a contract extension with star center Adam Fantilli and haven't revealed details about their new NHL-produced television broadcast, but they have released plans for training camp and the preseason.
More: Columbus Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski wants to stay with team 'long term'
Following the Blue Jackets' participation in a prospect tournament Sept. 12-15 in Detroit, they'll open NHL camp Sept. 16 with player medical evaluations. The first day of skating will be Sept. 17, followed by the preseason opener against the Detroit Red Wings on Sept. 21 at Nationwide Arena.
The Jackets will play only four preseason games before hosting the Buffalo Sabres to start the 84-game regular season Oct. 1 at Nationwide Arena.
Fantilli, 21, is the lone Blue Jackets player without a contract. He's a restricted free agent for the first time and is due a large pay raise coming off an entry-level contract signed shortly after the Blue Jackets selected him third overall in 2023.

Aug 18 (Reuters) - As opening statements get underway in a landmark trial over claims that Meta Platforms misled the public about the safety of Instagram and Facebook for young users and violated child privacy laws, one of the biggest fights in the case has already been resolved: whether a bipartisan group of U.S. states could present their claims together.
The states pushed for a single trial covering state consumer protection and federal privacy claims brought by 29 attorneys general, while Meta argued for a series of smaller trials grouping states that have similar laws.
The fight was about more than courtroom logistics. The states argued that the case centers on company-wide decisions affecting young users across the country and seeks nationwide changes to Meta's platforms, and that jurors should hear a single story about Meta's actions. Meta countered that jurors should evaluate states' claims separately because the underlying laws differ and warned that a combined proceeding could blur important distinctions among the claims.
Ultimately, U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers adopted a hybrid approach for the multi-week trial, allowing Colorado, California, Kentucky and New Jersey to try their state law claims together, while also including the federal law claims brought by all of the states. Although Rogers will decide the case, she appointed an advisory jury whose findings may inform her final ruling.

DUBAI, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Even as Iran projects resilience in the war with the United States, its leaders are worried that a threat of more economic punishment by Donald Trump could increase hardships, reignite unrest and further erode the Islamic Republic's legitimacy.
The U.S. president vowed on Friday to hit Iran hard economically, a day after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington would impose measures on Tehran that have "never been seen" as early as next week. Washington has not said what those measures will entail.
For all the bravado of Iran's leaders after holding out in nearly six months of conflict and effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil supply route, they face mounting pressure at home that could result in nationwide unrest, according to three Iranian officials.
The officials, two political insiders, a former Iranian official and a dozen ordinary Iranians spoke to Reuters for this story on condition of anonymity, either for fear of retribution or because they are not authorised to speak to media.

After Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham ignited nationwide conversation about whether or not transgender women should play in women's sports, perhaps the most prominent transgender woman on the planet has broken her silence on the issue.
During a recent interview with Fox News, former Olympic gold medalist turned reality star Caitlyn Jenner has offered her take on the debate, expressing a desire to "protect women's sports" as former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White make a mockery of the league by trying to declare themselves eligible for the WNBA due to the league's gender policy.
Weeks after Cunningham ignited widespread conversation about whether or not transgender women should be eligible to play in the WNBA, the league issued a statement last week indicating that the conversation about the issue would continue, but no decision had been made about its eligibility rules.
"Today's meeting covered a wide range of topics, including ongoing discussions on transgender athletes and the continued hate and vitriol directed at players online. We will continue to engage all league stakeholders in the coming weeks and months. We will approach these important conversations thoughtfully and in alignment with the values of our league. There are no immediate eligibility matters affecting the WNBA and we strongly denounce the bad-faith efforts to use these topics to demean or marginalize others," the league said in a statement via ESPN.
This statement came after Kanter Freedom and White declared themselves eligible for the WNBA.

It was just a normal Tuesday in our nation's capital. Washington Commanders training camp was underway. The Nationals were set to host the Chicago Cubs for a three-game series. Thus, Andy Pollin was doing what he's done for the last seven years at ESPN 630: being the guiding voice of the D.C. sports fan in the late morning, discussing the headlines and topics fans cared about.
However, that normal Tuesday took a turn immediately following Pollin's signing off from another day of programming.
"As I was wrapping up the show, the station manager came inside the studio. Which he's done in the past often with a smile and a compliment on the show. I could tell by the look on his face that wasn't it," explains Pollin. "He said he didn't want to do this, but it came from ***** ulus."
In an instant, Pollin went from wrapping up another Tuesday in D.C. to having his time at ESPN 630 come to an end. He found himself part of the nationwide ***** ulus Media layoffs that had already begun a week earlier.
During the first week of cuts, Pollin was on vacation, observing the headlines circulating in radio trades and on social media. When he returned from vacation, Pollin says he texted station ***** istant program director Mike Callow to see if he had heard whether Pollin should plan on hosting programs this past week. With no signs of impending cuts, Pollin moved forward as if it were a normal week.

Fifty years ago, a little film about an underdog boxer was released to theaters…
Made for one million dollars—a relative pittance for films even in '76—the flick about an unlikely pugilist from Philly went on to gross $225 million and take home the Academy Award for Best Picture against all odds. It perhaps goes without saying, but the movie is a personal favorite of mine.
Rocky is still bucking the odds—connecting and inspiring new audiences even in 2026! So, with the Minnesota Twins hosting the Philadelphia Phillies this afternoon, here are a few upcoming ways in which one can revel in 50 years of Rocky:
This November, I Play Rocky hits cinemas nationwide. Based on the trailer, it tells the story of how a young Sylvester Stallone wrote the screenplay for Rocky—modeling it on his own tenaciousness as a writer/actor—and refused to let the studio cast a different actor in the lead role. In a way, the making of Rocky is nearly as inspiring as the final product itself.
Also in November: the annual Rocky Run, in which racers begin/end at the iconic Philadelphia Museum of Art steps that Rocky Balboa ascends in nearly every film.

Aug 14 (Reuters) - A U.S. judge has ruled that Idaho's near-total abortion ban is unconstitutional because it provides exceptions when abortions are life-saving and not for broader risks to pregnant women's health.
U.S. District Judge Lynn Winmill in Boise said in an 81-page ruling issued late on Thursday that the right to a health-preserving abortion is protected by the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees due process and equal protection under the law.
The ruling is the first by a federal judge to recognize a constitutional right to abortion in certain circumstances since the U.S. Supreme Court in 2022 overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that had legalized abortion nationwide, according to lawyers for the Idaho doctor who sued over the state laws.

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across MLB. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Cubs fans and fans across the country.
Earlier this week I asked you a Cubs-related question in the SB Nation Reacts survey, but we're going to start this one with the national question asked of everyone, not just BCB readers:
So it looks like Pete Crow-Armstrong has the attention not only of all Cubs fans, but of baseball fans nationwide. This is a significant result — Shohei Ohtani has won the last two NL MVP awards and four MVP's overall in his career, but it appears that voters in this survey discounted Ohtani's 2026 season for a couple of reasons.
First, obviously, is the fact that he's not pitching at this time (although this article indicates he might return before the regular season is over). While Ohtani pitched very well in the 14 starts he did make — 1.79 ERA, 0.946 WHIP, 3.0 bWAR — that doesn't appear enough for folks voting in this survey. Also, while Ohtani is having a good offensive season, batting .290/.390/.540 with 27 home runs in 113 games, it's not quite as great as the two previous years, when he topped 50 home runs in both seasons. Ohtani isn't stealing bases anymore either, with just seven this year.
Meanwhile, PCA enters Saturday's action batting .279/.378/.534, pretty close to Ohtani's slash line, and also has 27 home runs. He's also recorded 30 steals and seems likely to have his second straight 30/30 season. Then there's the defense, and as noted in this post in The Feed, is at the top of SABR rankings in fielding for the year to date. Overall PCA has 7.3 bWAR, leading all MLB players, and is also atop all MLB players in fWAR with 7.8.

The Dayton Flyers will play Memphis on Sunday, Nov. 29, at Nationwide Arena in Columbus.
The site of the game was announced on Thursday, Aug. 6, while news of the matchup broke in March. The time of the game and ticket information will be announced at a later date.
The game is part of the inaugural Atlantic 10/American Showcase on ESPN. Saint Louis, the defending A-10 regular-season champion, will play South Florida, the defending American Conference regular-season and tournament champion, in the first game. The Dayton-Memphis matchup will follow.
This collaboration presents a tremendous opportunity for Atlantic 10 teams to compete against quality opponents on a neutral floor before a national audience," A10 Commissioner Dan Leibovitz said in a press release. "We appreciate our media partner, ESPN, and the American Conference for coming together to create a unique event with meaningful scheduling value. This collaboration will strengthen our league's non-conference profile and improve our NCAA Tournament positioning.
According to the A-10, "Future editions of the event will rotate participating schools and host locations within the Atlantic 10 and American Conference footprints. As part of the multi-year agreement, additional participating schools and host sites will be announced later."

At least someone recognizes the Denver Broncos' true place in the NFL power rankings.
In a 1-32 NFL pre-training camp power ranking list compiled by Josh Kendall of The Atlantic, the Broncos are ranked as the second-best team in the league, behind only the Los Angeles Rams. Denver ranked two spots ahead of the 2025 AFC champion New England Patriots, and three spots higher than the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. The Buffalo Bills rounded out the top five, coming in at No. 3.
Denver will face the Rams and Seahawks within the first six weeks of the season, as well as facing the Bills and Patriots consecutively at the end of the year in Weeks 16 and 17. Three of those games are primetime, nationwide matchups.
In his rankings, Kendall also listed one "new thing" about each team. For the Broncos, it was the switch from Payton to offensive coordinator Davis Webb on the offensive headset.
"Head coach Sean Payton turned over play-calling duties to 31-year-old offensive coordinator Davis Webb in the offseason, either as a guard against Webb taking another job or because of a legitimate belief that it will improve the offense," Kendall wrote. "It's going to be hard to improve on Payton in that area, though. The good news is they added wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and have a defense full of pit bulls."

The world's shrinking spare capacity to produce gasoline and diesel is running up against the White House's desire to temper the rise in pump prices ahead of the midterms.
The chief executives of Exxon Mobil and Chevron warned Friday that refineries that produce gasoline and diesel are already running at full tilt and can't be turned up much more to make up for global shortages due to the war in Iran and other geopolitical hotspots. That could mean higher prices for consumers at the pump in the coming months, they said.
Exxon Mobil CEO Darren Woods said the company would "push as hard as we can" to increase fuel production given that higher energy prices have a "significant impact on consumers and people's pocketbooks."
"With all that supply out, we're well below available capacity, frankly, that I've ever seen," he said on the company's earnings call. "It's going to take a while for the industry to kind of climb its way out of that hole."
Their remarks come as the Trump administration is racing to blunt the impact of elevated gasoline prices with three months until Americans go to the polls. The American Automobile ***** ociation reported nationwide pump prices were averaging $4.10 per gallon — nearly a dollar more than the same period last year. Refineries in the United States, meanwhile, operated at roughly 97 percent of their operable capacity this month, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said this week, while Shell reported Friday that it was running its refineries at record rates actually above their official capacities during the second quarter.

Aug. 1—A landmark ruling from a U.S. District Court judge in Colorado will open the door for hundreds of college athletes to return to school this coming fall and could help Gonzaga rebuild its roster at a crucial point of the offseason.
On Friday afternoon, Judge Charlotte N. Sweeney granted a preliminary injunction that will give any athlete from the high school class of 2022 an additional year of college eligibility.
The ruling comes after dozens of student-athletes in multiple states filed lawsuits against the NCAA, **** erting they should be eligible to compete under the regulatory body's new "5-for-5" rule that gives players five years to play five seasons.
NCAA President Charlie Baker, who previously stated outgoing college seniors wouldn't be grandfathered in to play under "5-for-5," reacted to Friday's court ruling through a written statement.
"Without targeted intervention from Congress, college sports cannot set nationwide rules everyone can play by and without Congress, failed professionals will continue to use college sports as a fallback option — robbing the next class of young athletes of college scholarships," Baker said. "It is long past time leaders across college sports call for the immediate passage of the bipartisan Protect College Sports Act. ... Today's rulings and the chaos they bring to college sports are exactly why it's time to pass this bill."

Graphene Manufacturing Group Ltd (TSX-V:GMG, OTCQX:GMGMF) MD and CEO Craig Nicol joined Proactive's Stephen Gunnion to discuss a new distribution agreement with Blackwoods, giving GMG's G LUBRICANT and THERMAL-XR products access to thousands of industrial customers across Australia.
Nicol said Blackwoods' nationwide sales force and distribution network — spanning mining operators, freight businesses and manufacturers — represents a significant commercial step for the company. Customer demand is coming from two directions: some are seeking corrosion resistance and longer equipment life, while others are focused on energy savings. Data centres are a particularly promising market, where even modest efficiency gains translate into meaningful energy reductions. "Once they do try them, we find that they're very happy to repeat purchase," Nicol said.
The Blackwoods partnership is the first step in a broader international distribution strategy, with similar agreements being pursued in Europe and the United States. Production capacity is being expanded through the company's modular Gen2 technology to keep pace with growing demand.

A 4,000-year-old disease often ******* ociated with biblical times is making a slow but steady comeback in one U.S. state.
Leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, is an illness many often relegate to the history books. Florida, however, has recorded 17 infections this year as of July 18, according to state health data. Of the 174 cases recorded nationwide in 2025, 36 occurred in the state, including 27 that were contracted locally rather than abroad.
Hansen's disease affects up to 225 people in the United States and 250,000 globally every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While most cases are contracted abroad, the agency notes that Southern states have reported illnesses not linked to travel that were "likely contracted from armadillos."
In the past decade, roughly 223 cases were recorded in Florida, the majority of which occurred in Brevard County. Central Florida, specifically, appears to be a recurring hotspot, accounting for 81% of state cases and almost one-fifth of nationally reported cases, according to research published in the CDC's journal Emerging Infectious Diseases in 2023.
While it appears a pattern has emerged, scientists aren't entirely sure why. The same 2023 report concluded that an increase in leprosy infections in non-foreign-born residents that "lacked traditional risk factors" indicated that the disease is probably now endemic in parts of the United States, with one cited case in a landscaper raising questions about environmental exposure.

Altria Group (NYSE:MO) sells cigarettes, oral nicotine pouches, and vapor products to adult tobacco users in the US. It's the parent of Marlboro, still the country's top-selling cigarette brand. The stock showed up in Donald Trump's disclosed portfolio, and it's easy to see the appeal: over 50 straight years of dividend increases and a business that doesn't move much with the economic cycle.
Altria stock is up around 25% year to date. Over the trailing 12 months, the stock is up about 24%, ahead of the market's 19% gain. Only Philip Morris, up 21% YTD, comes close among the major tobacco names. British American Tobacco and ***** an Tobacco are each up 10%.
Altria's Q1 2026 earnings beat expectations on both lines. Net revenue grew 3.2% year over year mostly from pricing, not volume. Adjusted diluted EPS grew 7.3%, up from 4.4% growth in 2025.
The volume story is also improving. Altria's smokeable segment declined just 4% in Q1 2026, down sharply from a 12% decline a year earlier. On the oral tobacco side, on! PLUS nicotine pouches rolled out nationwide in March and are now in roughly 100,000 stores, covering 85% of the nicotine pouch category by volume. On!'s own volume grew 17.6% year-over-year in Q1, after growing 11% for all of 2025. It's also the first product authorized under the FDA's streamlined pilot review program for oral nicotine pouches.

Iran publicly hanged two young men Tuesday over their alleged roles in January's nationwide anti-government protests, as onlookers chanted "Dishonorable, dishonorable!" before security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowd, according to the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), an exiled Iranian opposition group.
Abolfazl Sepahi Badjani and Amirhossein Safari Hosseinabadi were hanged Tuesday in Isfahan's Shahid Alikhani Square — where authorities alleged they committed offenses connected to the Jan. 8 protests, according to the NCRI and Iranian state media.
The NCRI said onlookers condemned the executions before security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. The opposition group also said security personnel had been deployed on rooftops and surrounding streets.
Iranian state media also reported the public executions, Reuters said, with Iran's semi-official news agency Mehr saying they were carried out in Alikhani Square "in the presence of a group of people."

A federal appellate panel on Tuesday refused to block President Donald Trump's executive order seeking to restrict mail voting, a day after the administration asked the U.S. Supreme Court to weigh in on the proposal in a separate case.
The three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia upheld a May ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Carl J. Nichols that said an injunction against the order was premature. Nichols ruled that the Democrats and voting rights groups who challenged the order couldn't seek the injunction until the Trump administration issued formal regulations governing it. The administration started releasing those directives days later.
The circuit court panel, with two judges appointed by former Democratic President Barack Obama and one by Trump, found that was proper and there were no noted dissents. But the unsigned decision noted that if the administration truly tried to force such changes in the few months remaining before November's midterm election, it may well get halted by courts.
"The action the Order contemplates would involve the President, whom the Constitution vests with no express authority over the conduct of elections, undertaking a substantial and unfunded overhaul of election procedures — including the implementation of a nationwide reform to Postal Service mail-handling processes —on the threshold of the November election. Put differently, the Order 'may not prove feasible to implement in any manner whatsoever,'" said the ruling, quoting a prior legal opinion.
In a separate case filed by Democratic state officials, a federal judge in Massachusetts last month blocked the executive order from taking effect for this year's elections because it was already forcing states, which are granted the power under the U.S. Constitution to control their own elections, to revise their procedures on the fly. That ruling was upheld on Saturday by a Boston-based appeals court and then was appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday by the Trump administration.

New draft EB-5 regulations propose significant limits on the use of bridge financing for qualifying investments.
Stricter job creation standards and full-capital deployment requirements could upend common practices for both investors and regional centers.
The rule changes risk slowing EB-5 project pipelines and may tighten the program in ways that reshape real estate funding strategies nationwide.
For the first time since 2022, the EB-5 immigrant investor program is facing a major regulatory overhaul. According to Bisnow, the Department of Homeland Security released a draft of updated EB-5 rules on July 2, introducing proposals that could sharply curtail the use of bridge financing—a pillar of many real estate deals reliant on foreign capital.

MARIETTA, Georgia, July 22 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump rallied supporters in Georgia on Wednesday to press for stricter nationwide voting requirements, leaning into his election-security message that some Republicans worry could hurt them in the state's competitive U.S. Senate race.
Trump's speech in the Atlanta suburbs follows months of attacks on Georgia's election system, which he has criticized since his 2020 loss in the state. So far this year, the president has questioned Georgia's voting system at least nine times during public events and interviews, according to a Reuters review.
In a June podcast, Trump falsely said the 2020 election in Georgia was rigged. Days later, during a telephone rally for a Republican gubernatorial candidate, Trump said: "Our elections are corrupt."
On Wednesday, Trump said some Republican victories in the state were "not going to be that easy with the cheating and everything else going on."
