Most Duke fans probably noticed that former Blue Devil Mark Mitchell won a temporary restraining order and shortly thereafter announced he would transfer from Missouri to Kentucky.
As it turns out, there's a catch.
CBS's Matt Norlander says this: "…as it turns out, his transfer from Missouri to Kentucky violates the SEC's prohibited intra-conference transfer rule because Mitchell did not enter the portal during the April window."
And it looks like the SEC will enforce the rules about the intra-conference transfer and apply the new penalties that it adopted this week for professional players who seek to return to NCAA competition. And, as noted previously, those are severe.
Coach Mark Pope could be suspended for half the season, Kentucky could be fined an amount equal to half of its basketball operating budget for 2026-27 (estimated to be about $10M), and UK would lose voting rights within the SEC for a year.

Bloomberg senior ETF ******* yst Eric Balchunas says the "debasement trade" is increasingly stealing attention from artificial intelligence, pointing to record demand for gold and Bitcoin exchange-traded funds.
"Gold and Bitcoin ETFs have combined for +$7b in flows in past week, by far a record for a 5-day period as debasement trade steals spotlight from AI," Balchunas wrote on X on Aug. 26.
He said SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) and BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) led the move, with both ranking among the 10 most-traded ETFs over the week.
Balchunas also noted that IBIT's year-to-date flows had turned positive after recovering from earlier outflows.
The latest comment builds on a post a day earlier, when Balchunas said GLD and IBIT had returned to the top 10 most-traded ETFs while semiconductor funds, which dominated much of the summer, slipped down the rankings.

On Thursday, Aug. 27, the MW followed the P4 conferences' lead in prohibiting "professional athletes" from competing in the league. The conference's statement read as follows:
"Consistent with NCAA eligibility standards, the Mountain West Board of Directors has unanimously adopted a Conference rule prohibiting professional athletes from competing in the sport of football."

Nebraska, Florida, SMU, and Penn State took part in the first Spikes Under The Lights exhibition at AT&T Stadium. Each match was played best of three to 21 points, and all of the teams took home some money.
Florida and Penn State each took home $200,000 for playing in the exhibition.
SMU got $250,000 and the Huskers won $350,000.
The first match was a slow start for the Huskers, but once they got warmed up we saw the Nebraska we are used to seeing.
I have to admit, this match was a lot closer than I thought it would be. With Florida's down year last year, and eight transfers, I wasn't sure what to expect. What became obvious throughout the match was that Florida is going to make some waves this season.

The Buffalo Bills wrapped their exhibition season in stylish fashion against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday at Highmark Stadium.
The Bills trailed late and rallied for a 28-27 comeback win.
It wasn't all easy for Buffalo in this one. The Bills had some struggles on special teams which directly led to scores for Pittsburgh multiple times.
That wasn't enough to stop quarterback Shane Buechele.
As players on the roster bubble kept on battling for a spot on the team, Buechele helped rally the Bills with a late score with less than two minutes remaining in the contest. Buechele ended up going on to convert the two-point conversion to take the one-point lead that the Bills would cough up in the dying seconds.

The San Francisco 49ers are wrapping up their preseason schedule with a battle against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium on Thursday.
Unfortunately, the 49ers lost one of their 2026 draft picks in the first quarter of the exhibition matchup, as cornerback Ephesians Prysock suffered a shoulder injury was originally listed as questionable to return. He's now been ruled out.
Prysock, 23, played collegiately at Arizona (2022-23) and Washington (2024-25) before San Francisco took him in the fourth round (No. 139 overall) of this year's draft. He's popped a bit in the team's first two preseason games, so this actually is a big loss for this contest, especially considering the starters aren't playing.
If Prysock can't go, the 49ers will have to rely on Jack Jones, Jakob Robinson, Eli Apple and Darrell Luter Jr. at cornerback for the rest of the game.

New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart is entering his sophomore season with a new head coach and a plethora of new teammates. Yet, there's one particular teammate who joined the franchise in 2025 who will work most closely with Dart, hoping to boost his morale: veteran quarterback Jameis Winston.
Dart's rookie stint was fairly impressive; he tallied nine rushing touchdowns, 15 passing touchdowns, and just five interceptions. Nevertheless, a few ill-advised risks led Dart to take some big hits, which resulted in concussion protocol mandates.
Dart already has the intangibles to succeed in the NFL, but it's all about execution from this point forward. In Dart's second year, he'll be greatly edified by this wisdom from head coach John Harbaugh and feed off of the charismatic aura of Winston.
Winston has been intentionally thorough with his play in the preseason, posting a QB Rating of 91.4, 15 completions, and 150 yards in the most recent 26-3 exhibition win over the Miami Dolphins. Winston also posted just one incompletion and averaged 9.9 yards per passing attempt in the preseason opener versus the Minnesota Vikings on Aug 15.
Ultimately, Winston's preseason play should leave Dart with an undertone of resilience, a point of reference that Dart will want to replicate when the regular season starts.

Mory Bamba didn't just miss an opportunity to suit up for the New York Jets' during their preseason victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. He missed a shot at building on some serious momentum birthed during the opener. Let's just say he made quite the impression.
His work from the week before was so good that it's still earning recognition. Following Week 2 of the preseason, Pro Football Focus continued to rank Bamba among the NFL's highest-graded rookies. The Jets cornerback checked in with an 86.0 overall grade, placing him among the league's top first-year performers through two weeks of exhibition play.
The ranking is particularly impressive all things considered. Again, it bears repeating. His grade is based entirely on his preseason debut against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Bamba was targeted 10 times on just 29 coverage snaps, allowing four receptions for 54 yards while also recording two pass breakups, two tackles, and a defensive stop. One of his best moments came on a pass breakup in the end zone, while he also flashed on special teams during an encouraging all-around performance.
Unfortunately, an injury kept him out of the Steelers game and could complicate his path to the 53-man roster. Still, Bamba may have shown enough to remain firmly in the organization's plans. The Jets face difficult roster decisions in the coming days, but developmental cornerbacks who flash both defensive and special teams value are often worth keeping around.

Liverpool's summer planning appears to have moved sharply in the ******* e of a few days, with The Independent reporting that an agreement has been reached for Bradley Barcola and that attention is now turning towards Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott.
For a club that has spent much of the window weighing options and managing price points, this would represent a significant shift. Liverpool's pursuit of Barcola has been long-running, with Paris Saint-Germain holding firm for much of the summer. Their initial valuation was considered prohibitive, yet patience now seems to have brought movement. The expected total package, according to the report, is £120 million, a major outlay and one that would immediately place the France international among the statement arrivals of the market.
There has been a sense that Liverpool's focus on Barcola slowed progress elsewhere. That is understandable when such a large deal is under discussion, financially and structurally. Once a move of this size edges towards completion, clubs can begin to re-order the rest of their window with greater clarity.
That appears to be the case here. Liverpool are now expected to accelerate in other areas, and the midfield picture has come back into view. Even in a squad with numbers in that department, there remains a question over balance, particularly in the deeper roles. The need is less about volume and more about profile.
Scott has emerged as the leading midfield target, and the attraction is clear. The new Liverpool head coach, Andoni Iraola, knows him well from their time together at Bournemouth. Familiarity matters in these situations, especially when a coach believes a player can carry instructions quickly into a different tactical environment.

After dropping its first two exhibitions against Lithuania teams, the Wolverines capped their Europe trip with an 84-81 win over Serbia's Mega Superbet on Aug. 27 at the Sportski Centar in Herceg Novi, Montenegro but lost one of their standout freshmen in the process.
Brandon McCoy Jr., a five-star guard and one of the team's two incoming McDonald's All-Americans, exited 20 seconds into the game with an injury. After coming away with a steal on the first possession, he slipped as he drove to the basket in transition.
McCoy stayed down for several moments and was tended to by trainer Chris Williams. He got up favoring his right leg and didn't put any weight on it before he was carried off the court back to the locker room. He never returned to the bench.
The program didn't provide an immediate postgame update on McCoy's injury.

Former Florida basketball guard Xaivian Lee is on the move.
After spending the summer with the Cleveland Cavaliers on an Exhibit 10 deal, Lee is back in the college ranks after committing to Gonzaga on Aug. 26. In five league games with the Cavaliers in Las Vegas, Lee averaged 6.4 points and 2.4 ******* ists.
Lee is one of the members of the Class of 2022 fighting to gain a final year of eligibility after the NCAA passed its new five-for-five rule but would not instate it for his class.
The guard secured a temporary restraining order against the NCAA in California, which allowed him to join Gonzaga. Lee was one of 73 plaintiffs who were granted the TRO, but the NCAA could win an appeal.
In his lone season with Florida, Lee averaged 11.6 points, 4.2 ******* ists, and 3.7 rebounds per game, helping the Gators win the SEC regular-season ******* le. Prior to joining UF, he played at Princeton for three years.

On August 13, Nektar Therapeutics (NASDAQ:NKTR) held its second-quarter earnings call and laid out where its lead drug candidate stands after years of development. Rezpegaldesleukin, known as rezpeg, is now enrolling patients in Phase 3 trials for two separate autoimmune conditions, atopic dermatitis and alopecia areata. Management framed the quarter around two numbers that matter most to investors right now: a $1.02 billion cash balance that provides a runway into 2028, and a drug program that finally has late-stage data on the calendar.
Nektar's Phase 3 program for atopic dermatitis, called ZENITH AD, began randomizing patients in July 2026 across two pivotal studies, each enrolling 510 adolescent and adult patients. A third study in patients who have already tried other treatments is set to start by the end of September 2026. Management expects top-line data from the first studies in mid-2028, with a Biologics License Application submission to follow in 2029 if results hold up. After an end-of-Phase 2 meeting with the FDA, Nektar also finalized a single registrational Phase 3 study for alopecia areata, called ZENITH AA, which will enroll 850 patients and use a SALT score of 20 or less at week 52, meaning 80% or more scalp hair coverage, as its primary endpoint.
The case for rezpeg goes beyond trial design. CEO Howard Robin noted that roughly 15 million people in the U.S. have moderate to severe atopic dermatitis, and fewer than 10% currently get a systemic therapy, leaving room for the market itself to grow. He also pointed out that about half of patients on IL-13 drugs such as Dupixent either stop responding or never respond at all. In alopecia areata, where JAK inhibitors carry boxed warnings that keep many dermatologists away, the market for approved treatments is still projected to reach $5 billion by 2033. Nektar's own market research found that 150 of 151 physicians surveyed preferred rezpeg's short-lived injection site reactions over the longer-lasting conjunctivitis tied to current options, a result management used to argue rezpeg could compete across first, second, and third-line patients.
None of this comes cheap. Nektar's operating loss widened to $42.3 million in the second quarter, up from $36.2 million a year earlier, and the net loss came in at $40.6 million, or $1.23 per share. Research and development spending is set to climb further, with full-year guidance now at $210 million to $230 million as the Phase 3 programs and manufacturing activities ramp up. The company's only revenue right now is $10.1 million in noncash royalty income, down from $11.2 million a year ago, and full-year revenue guidance tops out at $45 million. That gap between spending and revenue is why Nektar leaned on a public stock offering that raised $373.8 million in gross proceeds in April 2026, a move that keeps the lights on but also dilutes existing shareholders.

New Orleans Saints fans will have to wait until the regular season opener to see Tyler Shough lead the first-string offense onto the field. after Wednesday's practice at Tulane's Yulman Stadium, Saints head coach Kellen Moore said that "a lot of" first teamers won't play in Friday's preseason finale with the Dallas Cowboys.
Moore added that the first-team units on offense and defense saw 145 snaps between three joint practice sessions, which he felt was plenty of work. They were able to run different situations against different opponents' best players and learn what they needed in those controlled environments. From his point of view, putting his top talents into an exhibition game would just be an injury risk.
There's a couple of different trains of thought here. On the one hand, some coaches like to use the final preseason game as a "dress rehearsal" where they can see how their offense runs a scripted drive and their defense responds to real pressure. On the other hand, there's been a movement around the league to dial down the preseason snaps and protect their most valuable players from injury. That's an easy argument to buy when the game's result doesn't matter.
Even so, this approach will be second-guessed if the Saints start sloppy in a few weeks. Stumbling out of the gates and playing low-scoring, penalty-prone football and losing a couple of games (which is very possible between back-to-back road trips to visit the Detroit Lions and Baltimore Ravens in Weeks 1 and 2) would invite a lot of criticism for not getting the starting units onto the field in these preseason games. Clearly that's a risk Moore is comfortable taking.

Apparently a Pro Bowl, well, event that included Joe Flacco and Shedeur Sanders was a bridge too far.
The NFL will officially eliminate the Pro Bowl as a competition and simply apply the honorific to deserving players, many of whom have contract escalators for being named a Pro Bowler. The league made the announcement Wednesday, Aug. 26. The move also aligns with the NFL's ongoing initiatives to emphasize player safety. Playing an all-star exhibition, in any form, didn't square nicely with that objective.
Moving forward, the AFC and NFC rosters will continue to be constructed with 44 players apiece. However with no need for last-minute replacements, there won't be a dilution to the honor that had become so commonplace in recent years. Players, coaches and fans will continue to annually supply equally weighted votes to determine the 88 Pro Bowlers.
"The Pro Bowl has always been about recognizing the players who distinguish themselves as the very best in the NFL," said Peter O'Reilly, the NFL's EVP of club business, international and league events.
"A Pro Bowl selection will return to its original purpose, honoring the best of the best. We want that distinction to carry even greater meaning for the players, their families, their clubs and our fans."

Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) jumped 12.6% to a record $152.20 on August 19 after a pivotal melanoma trial validated intismeran autogene, the individualized mRNA cancer therapy developed with Moderna. In the 1,137-patient Phase 3 INTerpath-001 study, intismeran plus Keytruda produced statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in recurrence-free survival and distant-metastasis-free survival compared with Keytruda alone. No new safety concerns emerged. Investors are now asking whether intismeran can turn Keytruda from a drug approaching a patent cliff into the foundation of a personalized-cancer platform.
That distinction matters because Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) generated $31.68 billion from Keytruda and Keytruda Qlex in 2025, nearly half of the company's sales. In the U.S., biosimilar competition could begin after Keytruda's primary compound patent expires in December 2028, although biosimilars have already entered some smaller international markets. A successful combination could support continued use of the franchise without removing the need for other growth engines.
The bullish case for Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) is that intismeran adds a personalized immune response to a checkpoint inhibitor already embedded across oncology. The treatment is designed from the unique mutations in each patient's tumor and encodes as many as 34 neoantigens, training the immune system to recognize tumor cells while Keytruda removes a brake on the immune response.
Earlier Phase 2b data showed a 49% reduction in the risk of recurrence or death and a 59% reduction in distant metastasis or death at five years. Phase 3 confirmation makes the approach more credible for Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) beyond melanoma. The company is also studying intismeran combinations in non-small cell lung, bladder and renal-cell cancers. Success across several tumor types could create a portfolio of Keytruda combinations rather than a single indication.
That would give Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) another lifecycle-management tool alongside Keytruda Qlex and newer oncology ***** ets. It also strengthens the argument that Keytruda can remain commercially relevant after standalone pembrolizumab faces lower-priced competition.

ATLANTA (AP) — Players who leave the NFL to return to college won't be allowed to come back to the league this season.
NFL executive Troy Vincent reiterated the longstanding policy at the league's meetings Wednesday, saying players who go back to college will be ineligible to play in 2026. Vincent said any player who does that would instead become a free agent for the 2027 season.
The comments came one day after the Southeastern and Big Ten conferences banned players who were on NFL rosters from being able to play at their schools. Atlantic Coast and Big 12 conference leaders were also discussing the topic this week.
At least two players who signed with NFL teams as undrafted free agents this offseason were hoping to return to college and play at No. 11 LSU.
Tight end Dae'Quan Wright originally signed with Philadelphia as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi following the draft. He was waived by the Eagles on Aug. 10 and claimed by Cleveland the following day. He spent about two weeks with the Browns without playing in an exhibition game before being waived on Monday. The NFL has spent years trying to fix the Pro Bowl.

According to The Athletic's Jonathan Jones, the NFL will no longer hold a Pro Bowl game, ending its annual all-star exhibition after years of declining relevance and repeated attempts to reinvent it.

"The Shards" star looked like the spitting image of her mother, Cindy Crawford, in the form-fitting '90s-inspired midi dress by Yana Matkivski, which featured a plunge neckline and a slim pencil skirt silhouette with an open back.
Gerber, who made it impossible not to do a double take as she wore her brunette locks parted to the side like her mother, topped off the look with black stiletto mules, a dainty 18K gold Panthère de Cartier watch, and one of the most beloved '90s-style handbags: a zebra print Fendi baguette.
When it comes to Gerber's personal style, the model and actress is no stranger to minimalist fashions, in a nod to '90s icons like Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Kate Moss and, of course, Crawford.
