DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — Six people who were deported by the United States to Liberia last week resisted getting off the plane and instead were sent to Equatorial Guinea, another ‌African nation that signed a third-country deportation agreement with the Trump administration, a person on the plane and a lawyer in contact with the six said Monday.
Under a series of often secret agreements, the Trump administration has deported thousands of people to two dozen countries that aren't their own as it pushes ahead with its immigration crackdown, advocates say. Immigration lawyers say the practice is being used as a legal loophole to indirectly return some asylum seekers to countries they fled.
The group who refused to get off the plane in Liberia on Thursday include four Cuban men, a Brazilian man and a Cameroonian woman, the person and lawyer said.
A Honduran deportee aboard the flight said the group refused to disembark, saying Liberia was "not their country" and that they would face danger there. They were then separated from the others, he said. He spoke on condition of anonymity out of fear of reprisals.
He said the other passengers got off in Liberia because they feared officers would force them.

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — Senegal hired Patrick Vieira as its new coach on Tuesday to replace Pape Thiaw, who was fired after the team was eliminated from the World Cup in the round of 32.
Senegal announced the news in a post on Instagram, without giving any details of the length of the 50-year-old Vieira's contract.
Vieira won the World Cup with France as a player during a glittering club career with Inter and AC Milan, ******* nal and Manchester City.

DAKAR, Aug 14 (Reuters) - The Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of ‌Congo has spread to a ‌sixth province, Bas-Uele, located in the northeast of the country, the communications ministry said on Friday, officially confirming a case discovered earlier.
Health authorities have identified a ‌person who ⁠has died from Ebola in the provincial capital Buta, an ⁠official from the National Institute for Biomedical Research told Reuters on Thursday.
Bas-Uele wasn't previously affected by the virus. The ‌new case raised fears that people who have been in contact with the patient may have also been infected.
Delayed detection, conflict and strained health ‌services have helped the virus spread more rapidly than in previous outbreaks.

It is already the world's second-largest ‌epidemic after West Africa's 2014-16 outbreak in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, when the World Health Organization recorded more than 28,000 cases and 11,000 deaths.
Delayed detection, ‌overwhelmed surveillance, military conflict and a lack of vaccines and treatments for the species of the virus involved have allowed the disease to outrun containment efforts this time.

For all the global icons and champions the continent has provided across events such as athletics, football and boxing, it has never hosted an Olympic competition.
Dakar 2026, which gets under way on 31 October, is set to change that.

Hamburg have officially confirmed the signing of Zambia striker Patson Daka. Multiple sources report that another addition is set to be unveiled shortly. Moroccan midfielder Bilal Nadir will also join the Bundesliga outfit on free transfer. Kicker, Sport Bild, and the Hamburger Morgenpost all confirm that a deal to acquire Nadir is effetely done. Nadir arrives from French first division side Olympique Marseille.
Nadir – an €8m-valuced player- is said to have a profile similar to that of departed leading goalscorer Fabio Vieira. The fact that the 22-year-old is nevertheless limited to a more centralized role nevertheless means that he is not intended to serve as a direct replacement for the departed Portuguese international. Kicker reports that Hamburg remain committed to signing Vieira permanently.

DAKAR, July 13 (Reuters) - The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has spread to two more northeastern provinces, Haut-Uele ‌and Tshopo, the country's public health institute said in its ‌latest report.
The number of confirmed Ebola cases across the country rose to 1,926, including 702 deaths, official data showed late on Sunday. Four cases were recorded in Tshopo, including two deaths, with one death confirmed in Haut-Uele, as of Saturday.
The latest Ebola outbreak, Congo's 17th, was declared on May 15 and has been ‌largely concentrated in Ituri province, ⁠with cases also reported in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces.
The often fatal viral disease spreads through direct contact ⁠with bodily fluids from infected people or animals and causes symptoms that can include high fever, vomiting and internal and external bleeding.
Reuters reported in late June that Congolese health authorities had started tracing people potentially exposed to Ebola ‌in Tshopo and Haut-Uele, but until now the two provinces had not been included in the government's daily reports.

The axe has fallen for Pape Thiaw. In a statement released at 4 a.m., the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) announced that it had "decided to initiate proceedings to terminate Pape Thiaw’s duties."
This decision was made following a meeting of the FSF Executive Committee, bringing the coach’s spell at the helm of the Lions of Teranga to an end.
Crowned African champion just 175 days ago – before CAF decided to strip him of that ***** le – Thiaw is paying the price for Senegal’s dismal World Cup campaign. The three defeats suffered during the tournament, elimination as early as the round of 16, and the terrible comeback they allowed against Belgium (2-3) hastened his departure.
Thiaw’s glaring shortcomings in managing the closing stages of matches also ended up damaging his standing with the federation’s leadership and part of the Senegalese fanbase.

DAKAR, June 30 (Reuters) - Congolese health authorities are tracing people potentially exposed to Ebola in two provinces not previously affected by the ‌latest outbreak, amid fears the virus could spread further, a health ‌ministry report and a senior health official said.
The outbreak, declared on May 15, has so far infected 1,307 people and killed 377 across the eastern provinces of Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu, according to government data released on Monday.
In Tshopo province, health workers are tracing people who may have been exposed to the body of ‌a pregnant woman who ⁠died of Ebola in Ituri's Niania health zone, according to a health ministry report dated June 29 and reviewed by ⁠Reuters.
The woman fell ill on June 18 and died on June 27, the report said. Her body was transported by motorcycle about 300 km west to the city of Kisangani in neighbouring Tshopo province, where a sample taken at a morgue ‌tested positive for Ebola.
The report said the body's journey through several health zones before the diagnosis was made created a high risk of transmission. Authorities have launched contact-tracing efforts across the province.

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — The Ebola outbreak in Congo and Uganda has claimed more than 200 lives in its first month and is the worst known outbreak at this stage, with up to 35,000 suspected potential contacts, Africa’s Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday.
With 894 confirmed cases so far, the current outbreak is three times worse than a previous outbreak in Uganda in 2000, which had 281 cases at the same point, said Dr. Wessam Mankoula, a medical epidemiologist at Africa CDC.
The latest number of cases is believed to be higher because the outbreak was confirmed on May 15, weeks after it was suspected to have begun. The number of cases has increased 38% since last week and is now in 32 health zones across eastern Congo, said Mankoula.
The outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, which has no approved vaccines or treatments and was not tested for in the early days. The more common Zaire virus, for which there is a vaccine, was responsible for most of Congo’s past 16 outbreaks of the disease.
So far 74 patients have recovered from the disease across eastern Congo and Uganda. Experimental treatments like monoclonal antibodies are being developed for Bundibugyo.
