INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Fever wing Sophie Cunningham has thoughts on what a new WNBA commissioner should bring to the table. And she's already had conversations with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, who is leading the search for the new WNBA commissioner, about it.
Silver reached out to Cunningham, she said on Monday, as her agents are close with him.
"I have talked to Adam Silver a couple times, and I think he's a great guy who's very knowledgeable and full of wisdom," Cunningham said. "Just getting to talk to him and hear his perspective of his approach to the NBA is huge. Who he's kind of looking for, I think if you want to know the real answers, go to him, but I think he's going to put someone in place who really wants to take our league to another level than it's already at. Stephen A. Smith didn't hold back about the pros and cons about Cathy Engelbert's career after he found out about her announcement to retire from the position of WNBA Commissioner following the end of the 2026 season.
Engelbert, who turns 62 in November, told The ***** ociated Press on Friday that she has been thinking about retiring for months.
"When I first came to the league I intended to do this for 3 1/2 years," she said in a phone interview. "The 7 1/2 years exceeded that time. This is a really good time given the financial transformation journey we've been on. The cost to view the fourth-ever WNBA matchup between Paige Bueckers and Caitlin Clark from the upper deck — less than a week after the scintillating third meeting in Indianapolis — was not overly prohibitive.
The show had different stars and a different result this time. The Dallas Wings notched maybe their most-needed win of the season with a 91-85 victory over the Indiana Fever, at last finding some equilibrium after losing Azzi Fudd to season-ending knee surgery and sliding into eighth place in the WNBA standings. It also ended the Fever's five-game winning streak and prevented them from clinching a playoff spot on their first try.

"I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I'm like, 'I never once said that,'" she told ESPN in a July profile. "I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men."
Recently, Cunningham spoke about how she plans on continuing to voice her opinion, but also wants some of the focus to remain on the high-level basketball being played every night in the WNBA.
"People are like, 'You have a platform. Use it,' and then once you use it, it's like, 'Go back to playing basketball.' I think the reason why I stated that is because you go into media, and it's not anything even about basketball," she told USA Today. "I think I could do both," she said. "Ask me about what's going on and what I said. And also ask me how great my teammates are doing, how great our team is doing, how great the league is doing. The 2027 WNBA All-Star Game belongs to the West Coast.
The Golden State Valkyries and the San Francisco Bay Area will host of next year's event. WNBA All-Star weekend activities include the Shooting Stars competition and 3-point contest on July 30, 2027, and WNBA All-Star Game on July 31, 2027. Chase Center will host both days of activities.

In a memo sent to team presidents, general managers and coaches Friday, WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert advised the league's leaders on their approach to the topic of transgender participation in women's sports. The commissioner stressed approaching it with integrity and respect, without specifically defining the league's stance.
The issue has dominated conversation around the WNBA in the wake of Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham's recent comments in favor of excluding trans athletes from women's sports.
Engelbert listed three guiding principles for the league in the discussion but did not clarify whether or not trans athletes are allowed to play in the WNBA.
"First, we will always approach this topic thoughtfully, respectfully, and in alignment with the long-standing values of our league," she wrote in the memo, a copy of which was obtained by The Athletic. "Second, our player eligibility rules, unlike the eligibility rules of some other leagues and governing bodies, are collectively bargained. The market's top rental bat is reportedly off the board. Contact wizard Luis Arraez is heading from San Francisco to Philadelphia, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. The 29-year-old Venezuelan has been one of the game's most unique position players for a while now. He strikes out and whiffs less often than anyone, but also barrels the ball up less than anyone. Call him a throwback, call him an old soul, call him overrated, but Arraez is a phenomenal change of pace for a Phillies lineup that strikes out far too often.
Since the beginning of time, it seems, the Phillies and their president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski have been searching for a right-handed outfielder come deadline time. Arraez, a lefty infielder, is neither of those things, but he's good enough with the stick that the defensive fit is a secondary concern.
But it's still an area Dombrowski and skipper Don Mattingly need to get sorted. For the past few seasons, Philly has had a static infield alignment of Bryce Harper at first, Bryson Stott at second, Trea Turner at short and Alec Bohm at third. Kyle Schwarber's presence keeps the DH spot clogged up with home runs. Arraez has been adamant about staying at second base ahead of another trip to free agency this winter. So how does he slot in? There are a bevy of options.

CHICAGO ― Player safety, particularly safety from online abuse, has become a dominant topic for the WNBA in the weeks leading up to the 2026 All-Star weekend. Many players understand it's important, but admit there isn't a simple solution.
"It gets harder in this day and age with social media because ... it's hard to censor what people say or protect players in that way when we all have social media. Everybody has access to our pages, DMs, whatever it is," Washington Mystics guard Sonia Citron told USA TODAY.
"And with betting and everything, it's obviously gotten worse with the parlays and all that, but I think that's just something that we as players can try to ... just be super intentional about what we're looking at. It's still important to have conversations about how we can make it better."

Vitale, a legendary and longtime college basketball announcer for ESPN, posted to X that the treatment of Clark “by many in the WNBA” is “really sad.”
“She deserves to be treated like ROYALTY!” Vitale wrote about Clark on the X post.
“It is really sad the way [Clark] is treated by many in the [WNBA] she has been the leader for the league in many ways – PR – tv interest etc come on those that are critical – she deserves to be treated like ROYALTY!”
