The US military swung into action with plans to intercept the vessel, according to four sources familiar with the episode. According to two of the sources, armed members of the US military were preparing to board the ship. Military planes were in the air, one of those sources and another source familiar with the incident said.
It was only just before the planned operation that officials dug deeper into the report put together by a special operations command ****** yst and found it had been generated with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) — and that a chatbot the ****** yst had used inaccurately identified the material the ship was carrying. CNN was not able to learn what the misidentified cargo was.
The report, according to one of the sources, was “entirely false.” But it also “almost started a war,” the source said. Any US operation against a Chinese vessel could have risked spiraling into an armed conflict between the two nations.

Kohberger is working to undo his guilty plea to the 2022 Idaho murders.
The family of Bryan Kohberger is supporting his efforts to challenge his 2025 conviction, saying in a statement exclusive to ABC News, "Our full support of Bryan’s decision to pursue post-conviction relief does not come from a place of disregard.”
Kohberger, who is currently serving four consecutive life sentences for killing four college students in Idaho, said in his petition that the circumstances of his plea deal are now suspect because, among other things, he was “convinced to falsely confess” to a crime he says he did not commit.
“My actual innocence is my truth, and the plea, hinged on by false promises and blatant disinformation, MUST be withdrawn,” he said in a statement to the New York Times last month.

The woman, who was only identified as Ilona W. in line with German privacy rules, is accused of having been in contact with a full-time intelligence officer at the Russian Embassy in Berlin at least since Oct. 2023, the prosecutor's statement said.
The defendant ran a marketing agency in Berlin and was also the chairwoman of a lobbying group. As a result, she had an extensive network in military and political circles, prosecutors said.
Over the course of several years, the woman provided the intelligence officer at the Russian embassy with numerous tips about high-profile events and ensured that he could attend them — sometimes under a false name. This may come as somewhat of a shock, but the White Sox lost again Friday night. I know, who could've seen it coming that the team that has looked like a dumpster fire since late August would once again do everything possible to lose a game.
I don't even know how to feel, but I do know I feel numb. Just another game where the White Sox gave false hope, had plenty of opportunities to grab the win, and instead tripped over their own feet and got caught with their pants around their ankles.
It's usually a great sign to get a homer on the first pitch of the game, which Chase Meidroth did later than usual thanks to a 70-minute "rain delay" to start the game. That was followed by a Randal Grichuk double, six total bases on three pitches that got fans hopeful that the team wouldn't completely choke. Unfortunately, the starting burst was followed by a weak ground out and two awful at-bats that ended in strikeouts.
Say I'm a pessimist or "not a real fan," I don't care; anybody that's been following this team lately with a pulse knew what kind of game we were in store for. It was at that time I started checking the score of the Cleveland Guardians, game knowing what was bound to happen. Like a fool who believed in the White Sox, I also believed that maybe the Guardians wouldn't pull a win out of their hat late.
As we kept our eyes on the Cleveland score, the White Sox immediately gave back a run in the first. They never like holding a lead for long, and what are the White Sox if not predictable?

A California appeals court has ruled that Jay-Z cannot sue a personal injury attorney for extortion or defamation.
The musician's bid to sue was in response to a lawsuit that accused him of raping a 13-year-old girl.
In 2024, Tony Buzbee accused Jay-Z, known legally as Shawn Carter, of raping a child alongside Sean 'Diddy' Combs decades earlier, then dropped the case just months later.
Jay-Z denied the allegations and fought back, claiming the lawyer had fabricated the claims to extort him.
In a new ruling, California's Second Appellate District has decreed that the rap icon cannot sue Buzbee for extortion or defamation over the salacious accusations, even if they were quickly dismissed.
"The record contains no evidence Buzbee accused Carter of raping Jane Doe while knowing those statements to be false or with reckless disregard as to whether they were true," the appeals court wrote in a decision obtained by Billboard.

Megyn Kelly took shots at Sandra Bullock on Thursday for being afraid for her kids' safety because they're Black.
The "Megyn Kelly Show" host went after the "Practical Magic 2" star for comments made during the film's press tour. The actress said she was "uber paranoid" for the safety of her two children – who are both Black – in America right now. Kelly was quick to take issue with that, saying Bullock is feeding into the real problem.
"She has two children, both adopted, I think, from Louisiana. She wants you to believe, just like LeBron James said that Black men are being hunted in the streets of America… that they're being hunted in the streets of America," Kelly said. "She is a low-information voter, obviously, who has bought the lies about police, the false narrative that has besmirched them, defamed them and gotten Black Americans killed, thousands of them. Thousands killed because of fake narratives about the police that caused the police to pull back, especially in underserved communities."
"Minorities wind up dying. Low-income minorities, in particular, wind up dying because crime is unleashed on them by effectively woke white liberals like Sandra Bullock, who pushes false narratives that make her feel better about herself," she continued. BERLIN (AP) — The Swiss federal intelligence service on Thursday published a 200-page dossier on the notorious ******* war criminal Josef Mengele, the German doctor known as the "Angel of Death" for conducting horrific medical experiments on prisoners at Auschwitz.
During World War II, Mengele served at the Auschwitz extermination camp in ******* -occupied Poland, where about 1.1 million people were killed, approximately 1 million of them Jews. He became infamous for carrying out brutal medical experiments on inmates, including children, under the guise of scientific research.
After the war, Mengele obtained a Red Cross travel document under a false identity, allowing him to leave Europe. Like many former ******* officials, he spent years in hiding in Latin America while being pursued internationally for his crimes. He drowned in 1979 while swimming on the coast of Brazil.
The documents released by Swiss authorities include material provided to police suggesting that Mengele may have returned to Switzerland after initially fleeing Germany, or may have been planning to enter the country under a false name, according to the German news agency dpa.
Historians seeking to establish whether Mengele spent time in Switzerland while being pursued as a war criminal, without Swiss authorities catching him, had long sought access to the files.

Aaron Rodgers is calling out his exes, claiming that there have been several false narratives made about him when it comes to his dating life.
The NFL star, 42, opened up like never before in a two-part episode of the podcast, Not Just Football with Cam Heyward. In the Thursday, September 10 episode, Rodgers revealed actress Shailene Woodley lied about their split back when their engagement ended in 2022.
"I propose and she says yes. Now, she maybe felt like she was forced to make a decision. She could have said no," he said. "But not a couple days after that she tells me, you know, 'Before we get married, I gotta go [expletive] this guy,' and I'm like — because her story is that I ruined her life and gave her crazy depression because I left her. But [in] actuality, she told me that, then she took off the ring by March."
Rodgers went on to say the couple tried "a couple of times" to reunite, but "nothing ever happened."
"And there wasn't even a relationship in 2022 to break off," he added. "She literally told me, 'I don't want to be with you' after we tried some sort of reconciliation in 2021. There's just a lot of narratives out there that are just not true and they portray things a certain way because they can get away with it."

Pop star Pink is under fire online for resharing an anti-Israel message and then following it up with a series of Instagram posts directed at her detractors.
Macklemore, whose real name is Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, supported British musician Ed Sheeran on stage at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey in a show called Loop Tour on September 4 and 5. Donning a keffiyeh in front of an 80,000-strong audience, the rapper shouted "Free Palestine" and addressed Gaza and the occupied West Bank, saying that they are not being forgotten.
"Every human being walking on this earth deserves exactly the same freedom," he added, as reported by Variety.
The rapper then performed his protest song "Hind's Hall," which featured flashes of Gaza on the stadium screens. Macklemore referenced Hind Rajab, a young Palestinian girl killed in Gaza, named after student demonstrators at Columbia University who renamed a campus building in her honor. The rapper then addressed Jewish concertgoers, saying that criticizing Israel and condemning their actions as genocide is not a condemnation of Jewish people and that his message is a message of peace and dignity for everyone.
American pop diva, whose legal name is Alecia Beth Moore Hart, posted a video with the message "Awful" to her Instagram Story, claiming that Jewish fans who came to see Sheeran's performance are exposed to propaganda against Israel. According to Pink, Macklemore's speech and video presentation amount to a false accusation of genocide, and people who came to the concert are entitled to "apologies and refunds."

The NFL season starts this week and Fox Sports' Nick Wright is ramping up his defense of Patrick Mahomes' honor. Best known for playing the iconic Ash Williams in Sam Raimi's cult Evil Dead horror series, Campbell, 68, first shared the news of his diagnosis in March. At the time, he wrote that the cancer was "treatable" but not "curable".
"I am not trying to enlist sympathy – or advice – I just want to get ahead of this information in case false information gets out, which it will. Fear not, I'm a tough old ******* and I have great support, so I expect to be around a while."

Australia's Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) has cancelled the registration of C&N Southwest Sydney after finding serious breaches in professional conduct and determining that the company no longer met registration requirements.
The tax watchdog's investigation concluded that C&N Southwest Sydney director Elle Ristevski, along with de facto and shadow director Peter Ristevski, were no longer "fit and proper persons", a statement said.
According to the TPB, the Sydney-based company violated 12 provisions of the code of professional conduct.
The investigation found evidence that the business gave false or misleading information to the TPB during its inquiries.
The board also found that false or misleading information had been supplied to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). The information was used to support clients in appointing 'straw directors'.

Chicago Sky owner Michael Alter has shared a statement after former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom launched a lawsuit against the WNBA franchise.
Kanter attended the August 23 game between the Sky and the Indiana Fever, getting ejected in the third quarter after a courtside interaction with Natasha Cloud.
Kanter has sued the Sky over violating his First Amendment rights, claiming he was ejected for the T-shirt he wore with the literal definition of a woman to attack trans identity.
Team owner Alter issued a statement immediately after Kanter's lawsuit became a reality, calling the suit 'meritless and frivolous' because he was ejected after getting into it with Cloud, not for the questionable T-shirt he wore.

Former U.S. Olympian David Hearn and his attorneys returned to court to urge the judge who previously oversaw his Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool vandalism case to formally bar federal prosecutors from seeking new charges against him.
In late July, the D.C. U.S. Attorney's Office moved to dismiss the criminal case against Hearn in a filing that acknowledged damage to the Reflecting Pool "was the result of flawed installation" and not the work of vandals -- prompting outrage from President Donald Trump.

In late July, the D.C. U.S. Attorney's Office moved to dismiss the criminal case against Hearn in a filing that acknowledged damage to the Reflecting Pool "was the result of flawed installation" and not the work of vandals -- prompting outrage from President Donald Trump.

But the motion from U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro asked the judge overseeing Hearn's case, Todd Edelman, to dismiss the indictment "without prejudice," which would leave the door open for prosecutors to potentially seek to re-charge Hearn.

Asked about the trade war with Canada on Wednesday, President Donald Trump falsely claimed that U.S. banks are not allowed to do business with its neighbor to the north.
The allegation came during a meeting with U.S. travel executives in the Oval Office, after a reporter asked Trump whether there are plans for renewed trade talks between the two countries.
Experts say that although they may face restrictions, U.S. banks are not forbidden from operating in Canada.

BUFFALO, N,Y. (AP) — Chance Morrow caught his third touchdown pass from Elijah Holmes with 4:23 left in the game and the Buffalo Bulls beat the Albany Great Danes of the FCS 21-17 on Thursday night.
Morrow finished with seven receptions for 48 yards for the Bulls (1-0). Holmes was 26-of-47 passing for 189 yards and hit Morrow for touchdowns of 9, 4 and 5 yards.
Kickoff, which had originally been scheduled for 7 p.m. local time, was delayed about 2 3/4 hours due to inclement weather in the area.

INDIANAPOLIS — Ball State's new starting quarterback, 5-10, 250-pound Keldric ****** er, has gained national attention for his size, but on Tuesday, online betting platform Polymarket posted what the football program says was a photoshopped image of ****** er, which majorly bloated his appearance.
The fake photo of ****** er on X resulted in backlash with people calling out Polymarket for the deception. Polymarket has since deleted the post. IndyStar reached out to the company, which describes itself as "the world's largest prediction market platform for real-time global events," but did not receive a response.
