After Chaos faceoff specialist Justin Inacio suffered a right knee sprain in Carolina's 13–12 overtime win over the Boston Cannons and was ruled out for the team's doubleheader in Columbus, general manager Spencer Ford chose not to sign another faceoff specialist to replace him.
Ahead of Friday night's matchup with the California Redwoods — who boast one of the PLL's top faceoff men in TD Ierlan — he explained why.
"There could be guys who could come in and possibly win, but there is not one person who can come and be the whole package for us," Ford said. "Could they get us 40%? Could they be great in the pick game when TD is working to get a switch for [Chris Kavanagh]? Can they stop TD from going forward? He has hurt us at that and usually scores a big goal. Can he be great on offense and enable us to play fast in the 32[-second shot clock]?"
Ford and the Chaos feel more comfortable staying in-house at the stripe with a rotation of offensive and short-stick defensive midfielders.
Ty English, Christian Scarpello and Ray Dearth – who took the remaining 23 faceoffs after Inacio exited against the Cannons in the first quarter – will continue to take a majority of the faceoffs against the Redwoods and the Philadelphia Waterdogs this weekend.

That's when he got the call that he was being traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in a deal that landed forward Nick Paul back to Toronto.
"It was definitely a first for me," Hildeby told local media in Sweden, with the translation via Daily Faceoff. "I'd never experienced being traded before. As a player, you always know it's possible, so it's always somewhere in the back of your mind. There had already been a lot of movement around the league, so I knew there was a chance I could be next."

The Philadelphia Waterdogs' thrilling 15-13 victory over the California Redwoods on Friday might have been the Premier Lacrosse League's game of the year so far.
The bigger story, though, was Philadelphia proving its offense has reached another level — and that its new era has fully arrived.
For nearly two quarters in Chicago, the Waterdogs looked out of sync. California controlled faceoffs, capitalizing in transition and off of mistakes.
Head coach Bill Tierney even acknowledged during the ESPN broadcast that his team had drifted away from its game plan with too many self-inflicted mistakes.

LAS VEGAS – The final countdown to Conor McGregor's long-awaited octagon return at UFC 329 vs. Max Holloway is officially on after completing the final pre-fight obligation on Friday.

"The Notorious" won the first matchup by unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 26 in August 2013, and both men have come a long way since then. It will be McGregor's first fight in exactly five years after a leg break and an extended hiatus, and Holloway will look to ruin the party by exacting revenge on the biggest stage possible.

Chicago Blackhawks star Connor Bedard had surgery on his left shoulder on Wednesday, July 8, and will be out for four months, the team announced.
Video last week showed Bedard leaving the ice grabbing his shoulder after he was hurt while practicing with other players in Vancouver.
The four-month timeline will keep Bedard out of the lineup until early November. The starting date for the 2026-27 season won't be announced until next week, but he'll miss about a month.
This is the third major injury of Bedard's young career. He injured his shoulder last season during a last-second faceoff on Dec. 12 and missed 12 games before returning. He also suffered a broken jaw during the 2023-24 season and missed 14 games his rookie season.
Bedard is a restricted free agent and will need a new contract before the start of the 2026-27 NHL season.

Chicago Blackhawks star Connor Bedard is out until at least November after undergoing left shoulder surgery, the team announced on Wednesday.
Bedard, the 2023 No. 1 overall draft pick, was injured falling near the boards during an offseason training session last week at Scotia Barn in Burnaby, B.C.
It is the second shoulder injury suffered by Bedard in the past year. He injured his right shoulder in December during a faceoff against the St. Louis Blues. That cost him four weeks and he did not take faceoffs for the Blackhawks again until late February.

The Utah Mammoth said they have matched New Jersey’s offer sheet to Barrett Hayton, signing the 26-year-old center to a $4.775 million contract for next season.
“Barrett is a key piece of our team and important to what we are building here in Utah,” general manager Bill Armstrong said. “He’s strong in the faceoff circle, plays both sides of the puck and can play with anyone in our forward group. We are grateful to be able to count on Barrett in our lineup next season.”
Utah would have received the Devils’ 2027 second-round pick as compensation if it did not match. It cost New Jersey nothing to take the risk on the restricted free agent, as Philadelphia did with its $90 million offer sheet to Anaheim’s Leo Carlsson.
The Mammoth can sign Hayton to an extension beginning Jan. 1 but cannot trade him before July 1, when he could hit the unrestricted free agent market at age 27.
“I’m fired up to get back with my teammates and remain in Utah,” Hayton said. “I’ve been with this core group for my whole career and it’s exciting that we have an opportunity to do some special things next season.”

According to TheFourthPeriod‘s Irfaan Gaffar, Bedard is seeking an extension worth around $17 million per season, in the range of what Kirill Kaprizov signed with the Minnesota Wild.

A year after going head-to-head down the stretch during the final round of the 2025 U.S. Senior Open in Colorado, Stewart Cink and Padraig Harrington will repeat their competitive performance at Scioto Country Club on July 5. This time with Cink hoping for a different outcome.
Harrington won the faceoff last year at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, eking past Cink by one shot to secure his second national senior championship ****** le. The Irishman finished 11 under to Cink's 10 under.
Entering Sunday's final round at Scioto, Cink's 9 under total is one shot better than Harrington. Second-round leader George McNeill sits two back at 7 under.
"It probably naturally does add a little bit [of fire] because we did this last year," said Cink, whose third-round 64 included five birdies and matched Darren Clarke for low round of the day. The Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to pursue defenseman Zach Werenski , who is the reigning Norris Trophy winner, given to the best NHL defenseman for his overall impact. And if the Columbus Blue Jackets make him available, the cost could be enormous.
According to Daily Faceoff, any serious offer may have to begin with rising forward Matthew Knies .
During a discussion on Werenski's trade value, Colby Cohen said recent blockbuster deals have created a framework for negotiations.
"I think there's a roadmap on Werenski because Quinn Hughes was traded," Cohen said. "So I think there's at least a roadmap on the return for Werenski."

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Nashville Predators signed forward Jack Drury to a five-year, $22.5 million contract on Sunday night, four days after he was acquired from the Colorado Avalanche.
The 26-year-old Drury had a career-high 10 goals last season and matched his personal best with 27 points while playing in all 82 regular-season games for the Avalanche.
He was acquired by the Predators on Wednesday along with forward Chase Bradley and a third-round pick in the 2029 NHL draft from the Avalanche for forwards Zachary L’Heureux and Fedor Svechkov.
“Jack Drury is a hard-working, reliable, full-sheet of the ice center who can handle the tough **** ignments while being elite in the faceoff circle,” Predators general manager and president of hockey operations Chris MacFarland said after the trade. “His addition to our forward group bolsters our depth in the middle of the ice, and we’re thrilled to have him.”
Drury established himself as one of the NHL's top faceoff players by winning 58.1% of his draws — the fifth-highest percentage among players who took at least 900 faceoffs last season. He also had three goals and two **** ists in 13 playoff games while helping the Avalanche reach the Western Conference Final.

Before the final against Vegas started, Brind'Amour was clear about one thing.
“We’re not here today without Jordan Staal,” he said. “I can promise you that. We’re very lucky. And as a coach, you’re super fortunate to have a guy like that be your leader.”
Staal led the Hurricanes to the second championship in franchise history by being the two-way shutdown center and faceoff ace he has been his entire NHL career. By elevating his game and leading them in goals with six in the final against the Golden Knights in addition to all those things, he won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
At 37, Staal is the oldest player to win the honor.

Portsmouth boys lacrosse cruises in win over rival Middletown

MIDDLETOWN – There won’t be a need for a playoff victory to make up for a regular-season sweep this time.
Portsmouth made sure of that Friday, May 8, against rival Middletown. The Patriots were on the wrong end twice against the Islanders last spring before solving them in late May on the way to the Division II boys lacrosse ***** le round.
There was no such mystery on this occasion under the lights at Gaudet Field. Rafe Dionne and Teddy Gersen were sharp in attack from the opening faceoff as Portsmouth zipped to a 10-3 win over Middletown.
Dionne collected six goals and Gersen added a hat trick to go along with an ***** ist on a Luke Brandariz goal. The Patriots needed less than three minutes to take the lead for good, peppering Islanders keeper Corey Chiodo with early shots and eventually building a comfortable cushion.
“We really wanted to beat them,” Dionne said. “We knocked them out of the playoffs last year – they beat us twice before that. So we really came out here with extra drive today to give it to them.”
