There isn't an obvious candidate on this Washington team to be a super star national level type of player. But, every college football season a handful of under-the-radar players end up atop the national leaderboards. Washington enters Jedd Fisch's third season in Seattle with a roster that's deeper and more experienced than either of his first two, and among that depth are a handful of players with a shot at topping an FBS statistical leaderboard by December. Here are five Huskies worth watching.
Green might be the safest bet on this list. The graduate transfer punter comes to Montlake after ranking sixth nationally last season with a 47-yard average on 63 punts at San Diego State, including 22 kicks of 50-plus yards. Before that stop, he averaged better than 45 yards a punt across two seasons at Northern Colorado and earned first-team All-Big Sky honors as a true freshman. He's already on the Ray Guy Award preseason watch list. He's 6-foot-4 and 230-pounds with a big leg and if his career averages continue into Big Ten play, he should be in national leader contention.
Roebuck was a true freshman revelation in 2025, finishing second on the team with 42 catches, 554-plus yards and seven touchdowns. He's the one healthy and proven returners among the pass catchers and will be relied upon quite a lot. Roebuck has since moved to a new number and a full-time slot role, the exact alignment most likely to rack up "easy" catches in Fische's scheme. His offenses historically favor the top two receivers with the vast majority of targets, so there should be plenty of chances for Roebuck, who gets open easily anyway. After 42 receptions last season, a leap into the 80-90 catch range isn't far-fetched if he's the number one or two guy from the start.
Williams is possibly the biggest reach on this list. He posted a 161.0 NCAA passer rating in 2025 — 10th nationally — while throwing for just over 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns and adding 611 rushing yards and six more scores on the ground. Those are obviously very good numbers, but a good chunk of it came in games against the softer part of Washington's schedule. In Washington's four losses last season (Ohio State, Michigan, Indiana, Oregon), his passer rating dropped all the way to 107.8, and he simply hasn't risen to the occasion against that caliber of opponent yet. If Williams can close that gap in 2026 and prove he's just as efficient against Ohio State- and Oregon-caliber defenses as he is against the bottom half of the conference, his baseline efficiency is good enough that a national passing **** le becomes realistic. He's a preseason Davey O'Brien and Maxwell Award watch-list pick and clearly has the ceiling. The question is whether he takes that step against the teams that have given him trouble.

Tonight presents an opportunity for the last-place A's to earn their 20th home win and force a rubber match tomorrow.
Rookie left-hander Gage Jump will be on the ***** p this evening for the home team. The 23-year-old enters his 17th start of the season with a 5-8 record, a 4.83 ERA, a 1.51 WHIP and 88 strikeouts over 82 innings. Jump has endured some turbulence lately, going 2-4 with a 6.75 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP over his past seven starts. In his most recent outing against the Kansas City Royals, Jump took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits over four innings.
This evening, the A's would greatly appreciate a quality start from Jump in his first career appearance against the Twins. Through his first several MLB starts, Jump has alternated between stellar outings that have the team envisioning a future with him near the top of the rotation and poor performances that highlight the youngster's areas for growth as he adjusts to major league hitters. It would be beneficial for Jump to finish the season strong, although the team must be mindful of his workload to avoid increasing the southpaw's injury risk.

KYIV, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Ukraine sees a window of opportunity for U.S. mediation to end Russia's war in Ukraine until the end of next summer and has ‌drafted one page of ideas with U.S. and European officials to be presented to ‌Moscow, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said.
Zelenskiy said that a ceasefire and a previously discussed U.S. proposal for a free economic zone in Ukraine's eastern Donbas area — to be administered by a third party — were among the ideas in the document.
"It contains one of the ideas for a ceasefire — that is the main point. The second part concerns what the Americans proposed regarding a free economic zone," Zelenskiy told reporters in ‌a weekend briefing.
Zelenskiy said that ⁠he saw a window to end the nearly four-and-a-half years of fighting that stretched from the G20 summit in the U.S. in December this year ⁠until the end of summer 2027, given the looming campaign for the 2028 presidential election in the U.S.
Zelenskiy said earlier this month that Ukraine had handed proposals to U.S. negotiators for a plan to end the war, without providing more detail.

Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom drew widespread criticism during Sunday night's game between the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky when he had to be removed from the arena after a verbal altercation with Sky guard Natasha Cloud. However, Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White doesn't want to give him the attention he was clearly seeking.
After the game, which the Fever won by a score of 113-90 thanks to a prolific performance from superstar Caitlin Clark, White urged the media not to give Kanter "any gas."
Throughout Sunday night's game, Kanter could be seen sitting courtside wearing a black T-shirt that read: "WOMAN noun. adult human female," a statement against trans women in women's sports.
In the final minutes of the third quarter, tensions rose between Kanter and Cloud, resulting in a verbal altercation near the team's bench.

Bangladesh pacer Shoriful Islam etched his name in the record books on the second day of the second Test against Australia in Mackay, becoming the first bowler from his country to claim a seven-wicket haul against Australia. He also became the first Bangladesh bowler to take seven wickets in a Test innings, with his sensational figures of 7/48 now the best-ever by a Bangladesh pacer in Tests.

The organisers of Sydney Marathon have laughed off a mistake which saw a German stadium etched on to medals for participants, saying "we're not going to run from it".
Questions arose after the event's official social media account unveiled the design of this year's medal earlier in the week, which had mistakenly etched Allianz Arena, based in the German city of Munich, instead of Sydney's Allianz Stadium.
A spokesperson for the Sydney Marathon told the BBC: "A little too much international flavour has found its way onto the back of the finishers medal, with an incorrect depiction of the stadium."
It was "an unfortunate error," they added.

Atletico Madrid are moving with some urgency in the transfer market, and Nicolas Jackson has emerged as a serious target. According to Marca, Mateu Alemany travelled to London on Thursday in an attempt to push discussions forward for the Chelsea forward, with Atletico seeking attacking help after an injury to Alexander Sorloth and with Julian Alvarez still short of top condition.
This is the sort of deal that makes sense on several levels, even if the mechanics look awkward. Atletico want another forward, Jackson knows Spanish football, and Chelsea have a squad that still feels crowded in key attacking areas. The issue, as ever, is cost. Atletico have already stretched themselves after the Cristian Romero deal, reported as £33 million plus £7 million in variables, so any move for Jackson appears dependent on favourable terms.
That means a loan is the obvious route, with Atletico reportedly hoping Chelsea would cover part of the player's salary. In plain terms, they want quality without paying the full freight. Clubs across Europe are trying the same trick, because the market is inflated and proven attacking players are expensive.
Marca's report places Jackson among the preferred options inside the Metropolitano. There are other names under consideration, but his profile is clear. He has pace, he attacks **** e, and he already showed in Spain that he can trouble defenders at a high level. His rise at Villarreal earned him a move to Chelsea for around £37 million after Bournemouth failed to complete a transfer for him earlier in that season.

Following a strong 2025 season fueled by a veteran and versatile roster, Maryland men's soccer entered the 2026 season with questions surrounding which of its 14 newcomers would step up.
That question was answered emphatically by freshman Said El Eyssami, who found nylon twice in the Terps' 2-1 opening victory against the Pittsburgh Panthers Thursday night.
"He's a special talent," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "He's got a nose for the goal."
The first goal came in the 11th minute when El Eyssami received a feed from Henry Bernstein that led him into open **** e at the top of the box. The Panama native delivered a precise shot with his left foot into the bottom right corner of the net, past the outstretched hand of Pitt goalie Jack Moxom.
Bernstein and El Eyssami connected once more just after halftime. A midfield run from Bernstein ended with another perfect pass to set up El Eyssami one-on-one with the keeper. The freshman accelerated past his defender and placed his shot off the inside of the right post, which careened left and in to extend the Terps' lead to two.

It didn't take long for Marshall Manning to earn some playing time early in his high school football career.Midway through the second quarter of Baylor's season-opener on ESPN 2 against Brentwood Academy, the son of Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning entered the game for Ole Miss quarterback commit Keegan Croucher.Instead of running it on back-to-back plays, Baylor let the younger Manning sling it.On his first varsity snap, Marshall rolled to his right, got the pass just over a Brentwood Academy linebacker's outstretched arms and connected with junior receiver Antwaun Adams for a first down.
Baylor would run the ball on the next play and Croucher returned to complete the drive.Manning transferred to Baylor ahead of his eighth grade year from Denver and is serving as Baylor's backup quarterback this season.

So the most anticipated sports season in Bloomington is about to begin — football.
I am still amazed that not only is that a sentence that got typed, it is a true sentence as well. The Indiana Hoosiers are the NCAA national champions and that can not be taken away from them. It wasn't an anomaly, it wasn't a fluke and they have to be respected for it.
I am not an IU fan (my Boiler fandom now follows me like the black cloud that followed Pigpen from Peanuts) — and all the skullduggery leads to the very same place – IU just completed the greatest season in college football history.
The rest of college sports now has to live with IU football at the top of the heap and the rest of us who call West Lafayette our safe ****** e now have to endure the fact that the last two undefeated National Champions in football and basketball reside about 300 yards from each other on Fee Lane.
Last year was a Disney movie whose script wrote itself except that would be trite and barely contain a narrative of the heroics of that statue. With heroes straight out of Homer, and a quest even more farfetched, Fernando Mendoza and Curt Cignetti became a modern Ulyesses and Achilles, and even Ohio State and Miami couldn't provide a suitable villain.

U.S. stocks fell Thursday as Treasury yields climbed back from the prior session's decline and a steep drop in Walmart stock weighed on the broader market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 350 points, or 0.6%, with the S&P 500 off 0.3% and the Nasdaq Composite retreating 0.4%.
Walmart stock fell 8% after the company's U.S. comparable-store sales came in below what **** ysts had expected; its adjusted earnings outlook for the third quarter and the full year also disappointed, according to CNBC.
Bond yields turned higher Thursday, reversing Wednesday's pullback that had followed the Treasury Department's announcement that it would at least double repurchases of 10-, 20-, and 30-year debt over the coming months. The 10-year Treasury yield climbed more than 5 basis points to 4.704%, with the 30-year yield rising 6 basis points to reach 5.254%. The 30-year had spiked to its highest level in nearly 20 years earlier this week.
The intervention by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent drew skepticism from **** ysts. **** ysts at ING, as quoted by The Wall Street Journal, compared the maneuver to "rearranging deckchairs on the **** anic," noting that without a concrete path to addressing the country's $40 trillion debt, any lasting relief in borrowing costs remained far-fetched.

Head coach Brian Barry-Murphy says his Cardiff City squad is "vulnerable" after centre-back Gabriel Osho joined their list of fitness concerns.
Osho was seen on crutches after the 1-1 draw with Wrexham on Monday due to a knee issue.
The Championship side are already without fellow defenders Will Fish, Dylan Lawlor and Calum Chambers and have had to move established full-backs into central defence this season.
Left-back Joel Bagan started the Wrexham game in a central role and Perry Ng, who normally operates at right-back, did the same in the EFL Cup win over Swindon.
"We're in a situation at the moment where we're a little bit stretched, so we're a little bit vulnerable, but we feel as if we can be really competitive at the start of the season," Barry-Murphy said.

Thus far, 2026 has been chastening for the fallen giants of world football. For Italy, it has been the year of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Bodo/Glimt, the Balkan team meaning a third consecutive World Cup took place without the Azzurri, the Norwegian side eliminating Inter Milan from the Champions League. There were other indications of decline – a Champions League table with the reigning Scudetto winners Napoli in 30th or Italy's sole representatives in the last 16, Atalanta, going down 10-2 on aggregate to Bayern Munich – and they combined to paint a bleak picture.
So if Serie A returns with the sense its best days are behind it, some of its historic forces have the same feel. And yet that provided some of the drama last season: two of Italy's three most decorated clubs, AC Milan and Juventus, spurned promising positions to miss out on Champions League qualification. They will instead be the biggest clubs in the Europa League after being leapfrogged by Cesc Fabregas' insurgents from Como. The third of Italy's traditional powers, Inter, cruised to their 21st Scudetto in Cristian Chivu's first campaign in charge; equalling his predecessor Simone Inzaghi's total of Serie A **** les was at least compensation for faring far worse in Europe.
His rivals this year are set to be a mixture of the familiar, with Serie A's capacity to recycle its managers, and an intriguing newcomer. A division where clubs have been starved of funds features two expensive arrivals from Paris St-Germain, charged with bringing goals to the underachievers, and a further influx of English defenders.
Chivu will share San Siro with Ruben Amorim who, in the way Serie A's fortunes have nosedived, seemed the man AC Milan ended up with rather than perhaps wanted, given interest in Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola. It is nevertheless an opportunity the Portuguese did not earn with his wretched spell in charge of Manchester United.
He will presumably import his flagship 3-4-3; whether Luka Modric, who turns 41 next month, wants to be in a central-midfield duo remains to be seen but Milan have backed Amorim by allowing him to make the biggest signing in the Serie A summer: his fellow Portuguese Goncalo Ramos for a club record €74m (£63.3m). It at least should ensure wingers Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic are no longer an ersatz strike duo, even if Amorim's record with centre-forwards was better in Portugal than England.

The San Jose, California-based company raised $700 million, with trading firm Jane Street continuing its backing by leading the round, joined by Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz and Tiger Global, among others.
The funding highlights growing investor interest in the infrastructure needed to run AI models, particularly as demand surges for inference — ‌the process of using trained ⁠AI models to generate responses.
Etched builds specialized AI inference systems designed to make models faster and cheaper to run, joining ⁠a growing group of startups seeking to challenge Nvidia's dominance in the AI chip market.

The Heroes and Nashville actress filmed a powerful campaign for animal rights organization PETA calling for an end to keeping dolphins in captivity, with the organization releasing the poignant footage following her death on Sunday, August 16.
Hayden's representative confirmed her death to **** O!, with her family remembering her as "an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her". Her cause of death has not yet been determined and the investigation remains ongoing.

The Toronto Blue Jays are getting hot just in time.
Catcher Alejandro Kirk led the Blue Jays to a 10-5 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday. Kirk finished the game 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. He recorded a single and a double, missing the cycle by only a triple.
Kirk is not known for his speed, so the idea of him securing a triple to pull off the cycle always seemed a little far-fetched. He does, however, have one triple in his career, having hit a three-bagger in 2024 against the Rays at Tropicana Field, where Tuesday's game was held.
The Toronto catcher is having another solid season. Kirk came into Tuesday hitting .271 with a .351 on-base percentage. He has five home runs and 22 RBI in 50 games.
Toronto is starting to heat up down the stretch of the season. Tuesday's win was the Blue Jays' sixth win in their past eight games. They've also won 10 of their past 15 games, and six of those wins have come against AL East opponents in what is projected to be a tight race as the postseason nears.

The vagabond Athletics will make their annual journey to Kansas City for the home series this week. They stand at 49-75. Heading into July, FanGraphs playoff odds had them about equal to the Astros for making the playoffs. They have had some truly unfortunate injury issues, with Nick Kurtz and Shea Langeliers both on the injured list right now.
It's not like the Royals are much better at 51-74, but tonight Vinnie Pasquantino and Maikel Garcia are returning to the squad and will start.
Hopefully those guys are healthy and rested and can show us what they can do the rest of the season.
The Royals will put Michael Wacha on the hill. Once again, I seem to get him a lot for my Monday games. He's had a run of pretty good starts over the past few weeks, and with two of the Athletics stars out, no reason to believe that won't continue.
Mason Barnett starts for the Athletics. The Athletics got him from the Royals in the Lucas Erceg trade in 2024. This year, he's been stretched into a starter only in the past few weeks and has generally been shelled.

The chasing pack had no answer and Hunter Bell crossed the lines with arms outstretched as she added to the World Indoor and Commonwealth crowns she already has to her name in 2026.
"Going into things as the favourite and delivering is hard," said Hunter Bell, who will bid to complete a golden year at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest next month.
"It's much harder than going in as an underdog. It means a lot to prove to yourself you can do it as well as everyone else. I've been embracing the pressure and thinking let's just go for it.
