When Anthony Volpe reports to the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, manager Shelley Duncan anticipates the shortstop to see some action at second base and possibly third base.
"There's a good chance of that," Duncan said. "We'll see when he gets here. Us as an organization, we'll have a plan in place for him. Anthony will be a part of that plan. We'll move forward accordingly for what's best for him and what's best for the organization."
Volpe, Jasson Domínguez, and Max Schuemann were all sent down by the Yankees on Monday following the fallout of the Trade Deadline and the promotion of top prospect George Lombard Jr. Schuemann arrived and played for the RailRiders on Wednesday night. Duncan expected Volpe and Dominguez to join the team by Friday; they had 72 hours to report.
The trio will be joining an already-good RailRiders squad. Despite having their eight-game winning streak snapped Wednesday with an 8-1 loss to the Rochester Red Wings at PNC Field, the RailRiders are in first place in the International League second-half standings with a 23-10 record, one-half game ahead of the Durham Bulls. Overall, the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate is 60-47. They are one of four teams in the 20-team league with 60 or more wins. Rochester has 64, the St. Paul Saints 63, and first-half champion Memphis Redbirds 62. During the RailRiders' six-game series sweep at Iowa last week, they batted .343 with 79 hits, including 11 home runs, and outscored the Cubs, 50-18.
Heading into Thursday's action, the RailRiders rank fourth in the IL in home runs with 152. On the mound, they rank first in ERA (4.14), hits allowed (774), runs allowed (492), earned runs allowed (423), WHIP (1.33), and opponents' batting average (.227). They're also tied for first in shutouts (7), rank second in home runs allowed (104), and tied for third in saves (29).

As expected, we won't be seeing the headliners for the Carolina Panthers hitting the field in the Hall of Fame Game. Head coach Dave Canales told reporters earlier this week that he will not send out his starters on Thursday night.

The Knights (59-50) got out to a strong start in the doubleheader against Durham (50-58).
In the bottom of the second, Korey Lee doubled with one out, and he advanced to third on a ground out by Tim Elko. The Barons' (41-62) offense struggled out of the gate, managing only three hits, striking out 14 times and going 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position. Birmingham starter Connor McCullough also had a tough time getting hit up for two runs in the first, then Rocket City hit him again for four more in the fourth, sending him to the showers after just 3 2/3 innings. The Barons' bats were completely MIA for three innings until Anthony DePino finally snapped the no-hit and shutout with a solo shot in the fourth — his 14th bomb of the year — to at least put a dent in the deficit at 2-1.
The momentum was short-lived, however, as the Trash Pandas answered immediately with four more runs in the bottom of the fourth, blowing the contest wide open, 6-1. Birmingham scraped together a run in the fifth when Ryan Burrowes singled, and Samuel Zavala followed with an RBI double, but Rocket City answered right back after a Caleb Bonemer error helped plate another run in the bottom half. The Barons mustered an unearned run in the eighth, but the Trash Pandas matched it in the bottom of the frame to finish off the victory.

According to reports from Code Sports, the all-rounder is attracting significant interest from multiple BBL franchises, with the Sydney Sixers leading the race for his signature ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket in June 2026, bringing the curtain down on a glittering England career. However, the 35-year-old has made it clear that he has no plans to step away from the game entirely and intends to continue playing domestic and franchise cricket around the world.

Madison Fitzpatrick will serve as the ACC Network's primetime college football sideline reporter this season, rounding out the booth alongside play-by-play voice Wes Durham and ***** yst Max Browne, Awful Announcing has learned.
Front Office Sports first reported the ACC Network lead broadcast pairing back in June, confirming Durham and Browne atop the primetime booth, Durham's fourth different primetime ***** yst in as many seasons after cycling through Roddy Jones and Eric Wood at the network's 2019 launch, then Tim Hasselbeck and Taylor Tannebaum, then Tom Luginbill and Dana Boyle in 2024, then former Boston College coach Steve Addazio last season. Browne, meanwhile, moves up from ESPN's secondary ACC Network booth, where he called games alongside Chris Cotter and Kendra Douglas in 2025.
Fitzpatrick wasn't part of that announcement at the time because her contract hadn't been finalized yet.

It's been well documented that Duke head coach Jon Scheyer has produced more NBA talent from college since taking over for previous head coach Mike Krzyzewski than any other school. Those NBA alumni include three recent draft picks, Cameron Boozer, Isaiah Evans and Maliq Brown, who are set to begin their first NBA season this fall.
However, according to NBA Draft odds website Tankathon, there could be even more Blue Devils selected in the 2027 NBA Draft. Currently, Tankathon has four Duke players on their big board, none higher than incoming freshman Cameron Williams, who is projected to land No. 7 overall to the Atlanta Hawks.
Patrick Ngongba II is projected to land just inside the lottery at No. 15 (new draft rules beginning in 2027 expand lottery from 14 to 16 picks) with the Golden State Warriors. Seeing the Rays' third baseman step into the batter's box during a game can also grab one's attention. If anyone needed a reminder as to why, all they had to do was see the rocket he launched off Erick Fedde of the White Sox on Friday night.
The estimated distance of "Cami's" fourth-inning solo shot to the left of center was pegged at 453 feet, the second longest in an 82-homer career through Saturday. There is no telling how far the ball might have sailed as it clanged off the D-ring hanging from the roof of Tropicana Field and 59 feet above the playing surface.
The blast was Caminero's 75th since the start of last season, which was his first full season in the big leagues. It was also his 30th home run of 2026, good for second in the American League. It also snapped a 12-game homer drought, which is his longest of the past two years and second longest of his career behind a 15-gamer in September 2024 that began a couple of weeks after he called up from Triple-A Durham.
Reaching the 30-homer mark may not in and of itself raise eyebrows a year after Caminero hit 45. Consider, though, that there are two months and 50-plus games remaining on the schedule. Hence, it is easy to see how another 40-plus homer season could be in order.

Scott McCarron got to ring the bell on Friday.
McCarron, 61, an 11-time PGA Tour Champions winner, rang the bell at Duke Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, to signify that he is cancer free. Diagnosed March 23 with Diffused Large B cell Lymphoma, he had been undergoing daily radiation for the previous 10 days, making 5-hour roundtrips to his home.
"Thank you to all the doctors and nurses that took great care of me," he wrote in a social media post. "Thank you to all my friends, family and everyone that sent prayers my way. I'm forever grateful. Now back to golf!"
McCarron was diagnosed with Stage Two B-Cell lymphoma after coming down with a sore throat. Fortunately, he took it seriously because a doctor's visit led to a trip to an ear, nose and throat doctor, who suggested a biopsy.
"Most of us are pretty stubborn and don't do anything for a while," he told Golfweek. "As soon as the thing showed up, I said, 'I don't like the looks of it.'"

The Rays entered Friday's game with a three-game lead in the AL East, after the Yankees beat the Cubs in an afternoon affair at Wrigley Field, By the end of Friday's game, which saw the division lead cut to 2.5, the last completed trade was AJ Minter to the Twins. Nick Martinez took the mound for the Rays, and it wasn't a night to remember for the All-Star pitcher. He gave up six runs over six innings, all of them coming on four White Sox home runs. England men's team managing director Rob Key has not ruled out the possibility of Ben Stokes returning to international cricket before next year's Ashes, saying "anything is possible with Ben."
Stokes stepped down as England's Test captain and retired from international cricket after England lost the Test series to New Zealand 2-1 in June. That defeat came after a 4-1 Ashes series loss to Australia during the previous winter.
The 35-year-old had also been ruled out of the second Test against New Zealand after breaching a midnight curfew while celebrating England's victory in the opening Test.
There was speculation after the incident that Stokes was unhappy with the way he had been treated by England's management. On Thursday, England brought back Joe Root as Test captain and appointed Stephen Fleming as Brendon McCullum's replacement as Test head coach.

Shares of Iqvia (IQV) surged past a buy point Tuesday after the provider of clinical research services beat second-quarter estimates and raised guidance.
Revenue climbed 8.7% to $4.368 billion year over year, while adjusted earnings increased 12% to $3.15 a share. ****** ysts, on average, expected revenue of $4.310 billion. The consensus earnings estimate was $3.03 per share, with the highest estimate at $3.08, according to FactSet.
Second-quarter new bookings rose 19% to $3.15 billion. The backlog for its Research & Development Solutions business (which handles clinical trials) was $34.2 billion. Iqvia expects that about $9.2 billion of it will convert to revenue over the next 12 months.
Citing improved organic revenue growth, the company raised full-year revenue guidance to $17.275 billion-$17.475 billion, an increase of 6.5% at the midpoint. It had earlier forecast a 5.8% increase. Arizona Cardinals offensive lineman Isaiah Adams is "completely innocent" of the gun charges he is facing in Canada, his attorney told The Arizona Republic, and Adams will report to Cardinals training camp on time on Wednesday, July 22, in Tempe.
Adams, who turned 26 on Tuesday, July 21, turned himself into the Durham Regional Police on Sunday, July 19, near Toronto, and is facing charges for possessing a weapon by crime, possessing a restricted or prohibited firearm without a license, possessing a loaded firearm and possessing a prohibited device.

Darian Mensah could have been complimentary of his time playing at Duke, where he led the Blue Devils to an improbable ACC **** le last season.
He could have credited Manny Diaz, the Duke coaching staff and his former teammates in helping him raise his game to another level, one that made him so valuable that Miami came in and swooped him away at the last minute this past offseason.
Heck, he could have passed on any question regarding his old team, and that would have been better than what came out of the quarterback's mouth at ACC media days last week. Instead, the California native decided it was best to use his platform to blast Duke and the environment he found himself in last year in Durham.
"At Duke there was kind of some friction when I first got there because my dollar amount was released," Mensah said. "Everybody sees that, and it was just hard for me to be the new guy, and everybody said, 'Oh, you're getting paid more than me, and I've been here for X amount of years.' At Miami, the culture is different, and it just feels like family and actually feels like I'm at home."

Seagrass plants making it through winter is "promising" for a restoration trial, a research officer said.
Durham Wildlife Trust carried out the plantings at the River Aln at Alnmouth at the end of November.
The trust's seagrass and seaweed research officer Dr Martina Bristow said at one point the plants appeared to have vanished, but further checks this month found them healthy and growing.
Bristow said it was "really quite promising" after facing "so many setbacks and challenges".
"That's quite important in that it tells us that they can stay anchored in the sediment and they can continue photosynthesizing," she said.

In Wilstone, it’s The Half Moon, a traditional inn with old wooden beams, excellent Tring Brewery ales and a classic cast of characters. It’s very much like Cheers. After a while, everyone knows your name… and your football club.
It struck me one afternoon that everyone supported different clubs, yet somehow they were all telling the same football story.
The landlord is Guy. Passionately patriotic and loyal to the blue and white hoops of QPR. Mention Stan Bowles, Rodney Marsh or Gerry Francis and Guy disappears into Shepherd’s Bush nostalgia. The Eagles announced the news via a post on their official club website earlier today.
The 24-year-old American forward joined Crystal Palace from SSE Airtricity League Women’s Premier Division club Athlone Town in the January transfer window. She initially signed an 18-month deal at Selhurst Park. Brady helped Crystal Palace to win automatic promotion back to the Barclays Women’s Super League, however, she is now moving on to a new challenge.
Brady made two appearances for Crystal Palace in the second half of last season. Brady made two appearances for Crystal Palace in the second half of last season. She came off the bench to make her debut in a 4-0 victory over Durham in January before playing the final minutes of The Eagles’ season-defining fixture against Portsmouth on the final day. Crystal Palace won that match 6-1 as they made a last-minute dash into the second automatic promotion position.
Brady’s next career move is not yet known. The player regularly found the back of the net during her college career in the United States while she was in prolific goalscoring form as she started her senior career in the Republic of Ireland with Athlone Town. The forward is a talent and she has an exciting career ahead of her.

Rivera birdied Nos. 2, 4 and 9 on the front. She swapped birdies at Nos. 10 and 12 with bogeys at Nos. 13 and 15, but closed with a birdie at the par-4 18th hole.

A solar panel company which is planning to create hundreds of jobs is calling for certainty from politicians to aid its expansion.
Power Roll currently employs around 35 people at its test plant in Murton, County Durham, where it is developing pioneering new technology using cells smaller than human hairs.
But the firm said it needed clarity on government green policies as it was making plans for up to 20 years ahead.
Labour MP Luke Myer told Politics North "clean power" was "an opportunity for our region... it's also an opportunity to make sure we have energy security as well".

The pair will meet in the first semi-final at The Kia Oval, with table-toppers Hampshire then facing Durham.
