While Youngstown State quarterback Beau Brungard received the Stats Perform FCS National Offensive Player of the Week honor on Monday, Indiana State quarterback Elijah Owens was listed among others for honorable mention.
Brungard, a fifth-year senior, accounted for a touchdown in all eight of the Penguins' series possessions, with him at QB, in YSU's 70-13 rout of Duquesne on Saturday. He completed 20 of 23 passes for 290 yards and six TDs, while also running for two touchdowns.
Five other players received honorable mention for the weekly award, including Owens, former Sycamore running back Plez Lawrence (now at North Carolina Central), Montana running back Eli Gillman, Stonehill quarterback Jack O'Connell, and Alcorn State quarterback Jaylon Tolbert.
Owens delivered his best performance as a Sycamore in Indiana State's 42-35 win at Eastern Illinois on Saturday night. The redshirt junior quarterback threw for 284 yards, ran for 98 yards, and scored five total touchdowns (three passing, two rushing). Overall, Owens was 21-of-33 through the air for 284 yards and three passing touchdowns, while adding 18 carries for 98 yards and two additional scores.
Meanwhile, Lawrence — who played at ISU from 2023-25 and rushed for 1,164 total yards in 270 carries — ran for 210 yards and three touchdowns in North Carolina Central's 30-22 win against North Carolina A&T on Saturday in Durham. Lawrence also had a 200-plus-yard game as a Sycamore, gaining 203 yards in 29 carries at Murray State on Sept. 30, 2023.

The Baltimore Ravens have completed their 17-player practice squad by adding two experienced offensive players.
Baltimore announced the signings of veteran tight end Nick Vannett and offensive tackle AJ Arcuri. The two additions fill the remaining openings after the Ravens initially signed 15 players. Vannett gives Baltimore another traditional in-line tight end behind an active-roster group featuring Mark Andrews, Durham Smythe, Josh Cuevas and Matthew Hibner. The former Ohio State standout has appeared in 121 regular-season games during a career that began as a third-round pick by Seattle in 2016.
We have signed TE Nick Vannett and T A.J. Arcuri to the Practice Squad.
Arcuri provides another developmental option at offensive tackle. The Los Angeles Rams selected the former Michigan State lineman in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL draft. His addition gives Baltimore two tackles on the practice squad, joining Gerad Lichtenhan.
The completed group includes prospects the Ravens developed throughout training camp and veterans who can be elevated with limited preparation.

Carse was stood down ahead of the second Test having been arrested and then de-arrested on the Saturday before it began after featuring for Durham in a County Championship win.
Derbyshire Police later confirmed that it was looking into an allegation of **** ault on the night in question. It is not know what, if any, involvement Carse had in any alleged incident.
The seam bowler featured for his county last week but is not playing against Northamptonshire this due to "pre-arranged workload management with the ECB".
Sonny Baker was called up to the England squad as a replacement and retains his place as seam bowling cover alongside Sam Cook, though Matthew Fisher has been released from the group.

Tampa Bay must trim its roster to 53 players by Sunday evening, and while many of the decisions will involve players who entered training camp fighting uphill battles, the Buccaneers' improved depth could also lead to a few surprising names being left off the initial roster. Here are three players who could find themselves on the wrong side of the numbers.
Of all the potential cuts, Sean Tucker would probably be the most surprising. Tucker has shown he can produce when given opportunities, and he led Tampa Bay with eight touchdowns last season. He also brings value on special teams and has averaged 5.1 yards per carry over his first three NFL seasons. The issue is Josh Williams's emergence and the $3.5 million price tag Tucker carries. That's quite the price for an RB3, especially with Bucky Irving and Kenny Gainwell firmly established as Tampa Bay's top two backs. Tucker and Williams are competing for one spot unless the Buccaneers keep four running backs. Todd Bowles admitted Saturday that the competition went "back and forth" throughout the preseason and called it a tough decision. Williams getting offensive snaps ahead of Tucker during the preseason finale was also noteworthy. Tucker's track record makes him difficult to move on from, but roster construction and cost could ultimately work against him.
Payne Durham has been a regular part of Tampa Bay's offense over the past three seasons, but the changing makeup of the tight end room could put him in a more vulnerable position than expected. Cade Otton remains entrenched as the starter, while rookie Bauer Sharp has continued to make a case for a role. Even though he has shown more than his more direct competition, Devin Culp, Ko Kieft being healthy adds another body to the room who contributes on both offense and special teams. Durham's biggest argument is his blocking. At 6'6 and 253 pounds, he has provided the Buccaneers with a physical presence at the position and has experience playing meaningful offensive snaps. But if Tampa Bay believes Sharp can eventually handle some of those responsibilities while offering more upside, Durham could become an unexpected casualty of the numbers game.
Josh Hayes has survived Tampa Bay's final cuts in each of the past three seasons largely because of his special teams ability, but this could finally be the year his roster spot becomes vulnerable. Hayes has been one of Tampa Bay's most consistent special teams contributors and has also provided emergency depth in the secondary. But Tampa Bay has added more young talent to its secondary, creating a situation where the Buccaneers could prioritize upside at cornerback rather than keep a player primarily for his special teams role. Some of you will remember Stan Brunson, who was a solid walk-on for Duke in the early 1990s who eventually earned a scholarship. He also played soccer while at Duke.
Like most walk-ons, he was greatly appreciated by the fans, and after his playing days were over, he returned to Durham and got his MBA from Fuqua.
Now, his son, Will, is a highly regarded recruit, and Duke is at least somewhat on the radar.
Brunson, in the Class of 2028, is around 6-6, plays for IMG Academy and is a top 20 player in his class.
But will his Duke ties matter? Former England captain Michael Vaughan has called for a severe punishment following Brydon Carse's latest involvement in a nightclub incident, saying the ECB must take action strong enough to deter the entire England cricket setup from similar behaviour.

Carse became the latest England player to attract scrutiny after a video emerged showing the fast bowler handcuffed by police outside a nightclub. He was briefly arrested while out with Durham team-mates Ben Stokes and Matthew Potts, leading the England and Wales Cricket Board to investigate the incident.

Carse had been part of England's squad for two of the three Tests against Pakistan but was released to play for Durham after being left out of the XI for the first Test at Leeds. He contributed 26 runs and returned figures of 2-82 as Durham beat Derbyshire inside three days.

The 30-year-old then went out with his Durham team-mates to celebrate the victory, during which the incident occurred.

The ECB subsequently confirmed that Carse "will no longer be available for selection" for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord's on Thursday. Hampshire right-arm seamer Sonny Baker has been called up as his replacement.

Vaughan believes the latest episode requires a response that sends a clear message across English cricket.

"Someone is going to have to get a punishment that sends a shiver down the whole England cricket team and right down through the programme, so that everyone knows that if you misbehave or bring any kind of bad reputation on to this team, you know what's going to come," former England captain Vaughan said on BBC Radio. "It's the only punishment that will really hurt players."

Carse's case comes amid a series of off-field incidents involving England players over the past year. Last October, white-ball captain Harry Brook was punched by a bouncer outside a nightclub in Wellington, New Zealand, while Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue were also present.

During the Ashes tour of Australia, Ben Duckett was filmed apparently drunk during England's holiday in Noosa.

Then, in June, former Test captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson broke a team curfew and were present when a member of England's security staff was punched by Saracens rugby player in a London nightclub.

Vaughan acknowledged that Carse could feel hard done by if he is punished heavily in light of the wider pattern of incidents.

"I hope Carse is getting good support around him. He is a character who can be a little bit loose and if you give him a bit of rope he'll take a huge amount of it. He needs people around him who are giving him better advice.

"I would feel for Carse if he is the one who takes the rap for what has happened over the past nine months, but somewhere, somehow, something has to be done to set a precedent that they won't stand for that behaviour any more," said Vaughan.

Videos circulating on social media appeared to show Carse being led away from a club in handcuffs by four police officers. Carse, who is part of England's squad for the second Test against Pakistan, was seen outside a nightclub in Derby.

Durham and England teammate Matthew Potts was seen speaking to Carse, while former England captain Ben Stokes also appeared in the background.

Carse was briefly detained at the scene but was not arrested, according to The Telegraph. He returned to the team hotel soon afterwards.

"We are aware of an incident which is reported to have taken place in Derby last night, and are currently investigating," the ECB said in a statement.

"We will provide a further update when possible."

Carse and Potts had played for Durham earlier on Saturday as they beat Derbyshire by 338 runs in a second-division County Championship match in Derby.

Carse, 31, has played 14 Tests and was included in England's squad for the first two Tests of the three-match series against Pakistan. He did not feature in the opening Test at Headingley, where England lost by an innings and 103 runs inside three days.
The second Test at Lord's starts on Thursday.

The incident comes amid a series of off-field episodes involving England players over the past year.

The most serious involved Test vice-captain Harry Brook, who was punched by a nightclub bouncer in Wellington in the early hours of November 1 last year, shortly before he was due to lead England in an ODI against New Zealand.

During the Ashes, a mid-series break in Noosa also drew attention to the players' drinking.

More recently, Stokes and Gus Atkinson stayed out beyond England's new midnight curfew after the first Test against New Zealand this summer. Both were stood down for the following Test at The Oval as part of a disciplinary process.

Stokes retired from Test cricket at the end of that series and was replaced as captain by Joe Root, who had previously led England from 2017 to 2022.

One of Root's first decisions after returning to the role was to remove the curfew and tell his players to "be adults".

Some may call this a best-case scenario; some may call it a pipe dream. But call it highly possible! Given the history of the CFP, 10 wins is the line of demarcation. In the past couple of years of the 12-team CFP, only one team had fewer than 10 wins. That was Duke last year, the ACC champ with only 9 wins. So I feel fairly safe in saying they are an outlier. In last year's CFP, there were only three teams with 10 wins. The Illini are projected as a middle of the pack lower top half of the league team. Do the Illini have 10 wins on the schedule?
With the non-conference schedule, Illinois should be 3-0 when they travel to Columbus to face the Ohio State Buckeyes. I am not discounting UAB, Duke and Southern Illinois, but all three games are in Champaign; Duke will be the stiffest opponent, 9-5 in the ACC last season and losers to Illinois 45-19 in Durham.
The Big Ten schedule is actually favorable to Illinois. They don't play Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Penn State, or USC. They do catch top-tier Ohio State on the road and host Oregon. They also host AP preseason top 25 pick Iowa. On the road, they face Michigan St, Maryland, UCLA and Northwestern, along with home games vs. Purdue and Nebraska.
You might ask how that is favorable? Ohio State and Oregon are Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in the AP preseason poll; Iowa is 20. The rest of the schedule is either highly winnable games or Illinois should be favored to win.

Practically, many teams skate by with just three plus starting pitchers, so personally I'm not too worried about how the rotation shakes out down the stretch. Despite losing Griffin Jax to injury — he recently got an injection in his elbow, and has resumed throwing at 120 feet — Rasmussen and Martinez are solid, Sugar Shane just pitched three clean innings in Durham on a rehab start, the Rays are settling Peralta into the Rays way, and Seymour is over-achieving expectations for a pitcher with 14 career starts at the MLB level.
I'm confident, but more importantly, how did y'all feel?

Jax and McClanahan are indeed injured, Seymour was recently in the bullpen, and Peralta is new. It's reasonable to be concerned at least a little bit.

LSU football retained both of its top ball carriers from 2025. Caden Durham and Harlem Berry decided to don the purple and gold during the first year of the Lane Kiffin era. The Tigers also added Wisconsin transfer Dilin Jones, who made the running back room more competitive.
"Dilin's done great," Kiffin said. "[He] really has had a great week too, and it's kind of taken off from where he did in the spring, so we're really pleased with that."
Jones came to LSU after two years at Wisconsin. He started the Badgers' first seven games in 2025 as a sophomore before an injury ended his season. He finished with 76 carries for 300 yards and two touchdowns while also contributing in the pass game.
LSU struggled to establish its ground game last year, but it will look to improve behind an experienced group of three and a retooled offensive line. Durham and Berry combined for 969 rushing yards and five touchdowns in 2025. Kiffin likes that both have multiple years of eligibility left and have shown a strong work ethic so far.
"They still have a lot of work to go and can improve," Kiffin said. "We're pleased with where they're at now, but we want to push them more."

The two guards never played with one another at Duke, as James was with Tulane during McCain's lone season in Durham.

A pair of doubles in the second drove in the first run for the Bulls, but the Good Guys answered back in the bottom of the inning, tying the game at one on a solo shot from Korey Lee, his first of two batted in on the day. Adding three more the next inning, Rikuu Nishida and Mario Camilletti started the inning with back-to-back walks before being brought in by Ryan Galanie. Junior Perez also mashed a solo shot in the seventh to add an insurance run, making up for his rough day yesterday.
Daniel Wright and Tyler Schweitzer were next out of the bullpen, each allowing on run on two hits while striking out two, earning a hold and keeping the Knights in the game with the lead. All of the remaining pitchers earned a hold while Jaden Woods earned his second save of the season, striking out one with a hit, sealing the win for Wright.

England have received a boost ahead of their three-match Test series against Pakistan, with opener Emilio Gay reportedly expected to recover in time for the first Test at Headingley, beginning August 19. Gay suffered a shoulder injury while playing for Durham against Middlesex on Friday, but scans have reportedly shown no serious damage.

Gay made his Test debut against New Zealand earlier this year and scored two half-centuries in the three-match series. Despite some inconsistency, his partnership with Ben Duckett impressed England's management, who want to give him more opportunities after dropping Zak Crawley.

According to the Daily Mail Sport, Gay's scan on Saturday revealed no major injury, meaning he should be available to resume his opening partnership with Duckett against Pakistan.

The series will also be Joe Root's first official ******* ignment as England's Test captain since returning to the role. Newly appointed head coach Stephen Fleming has been involved in selecting the squad, while Marcus Trescothick will oversee the team as interim head coach for this series before Fleming takes full charge.

The Wildcats announced news of the transfer via a post on their official club website last night.
The 26-year-old Australian defender joins Durham after a year playing her football in the American Gainbridge Super League with Fort Lauderdale United. McComasky was a strong performer for FTL UTD in 2025 despite the club's challenging campaign which saw them finish in ninth place in the table.
Prior to her time Stateside, McComasky played her football back home in her native Australia with Macarthur Rams, Canberra United and Western Sydney Wanderers. She gained experience of playing Ninja A-League football with the latter two clubs. She clocked up a number of appearances at the top level in Australia.
After joining Durham, McComasky said "I'm really excited to be here at Durham, everyone so far has been so nice and welcoming.
"I know this is a fantastic opportunity to be playing in this league and I can't wait to get started."

When Anthony Volpe reports to the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, manager Shelley Duncan anticipates the shortstop to see some action at second base and possibly third base.
"There's a good chance of that," Duncan said. "We'll see when he gets here. Us as an organization, we'll have a plan in place for him. Anthony will be a part of that plan. We'll move forward accordingly for what's best for him and what's best for the organization."
Volpe, Jasson Domínguez, and Max Schuemann were all sent down by the Yankees on Monday following the fallout of the Trade Deadline and the promotion of top prospect George Lombard Jr. Schuemann arrived and played for the RailRiders on Wednesday night. Duncan expected Volpe and Dominguez to join the team by Friday; they had 72 hours to report.
The trio will be joining an already-good RailRiders squad. Despite having their eight-game winning streak snapped Wednesday with an 8-1 loss to the Rochester Red Wings at PNC Field, the RailRiders are in first place in the International League second-half standings with a 23-10 record, one-half game ahead of the Durham Bulls. Overall, the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate is 60-47. They are one of four teams in the 20-team league with 60 or more wins. Rochester has 64, the St. Paul Saints 63, and first-half champion Memphis Redbirds 62. During the RailRiders' six-game series sweep at Iowa last week, they batted .343 with 79 hits, including 11 home runs, and outscored the Cubs, 50-18.

As expected, we won't be seeing the headliners for the Carolina Panthers hitting the field in the Hall of Fame Game. Head coach Dave Canales told reporters earlier this week that he will not send out his starters on Thursday night.

Given Carolina's questionable depth along their defensive trench, Hall could provide some much-needed backup for Derrick Brown and Bobby Brown III. The 6-foot-4, 297-pounder, who recorded 56 pressures at Duke University in 2024 and 2025, should have a chance to show off his pass-rushing chops on Thursday night.

The Knights (59-50) got out to a strong start in the doubleheader against Durham (50-58).
In the bottom of the second, Korey Lee doubled with one out, and he advanced to third on a ground out by Tim Elko. That set the stage for Mario Camilletti, who drove in the game's first run with a single. A throwing error on a pickoff attempt allowed Camilletti to advance to second, and Dru Baker drove him in with a clutch double.
In the third, Junior Pérez singled, and with two outs, Ryan Galanie crushed his 19th homer of the season (18th with the Knights) to double Charlotte's lead. With this blast, Galanie built on his momentum after being our White Sox Minor League Player of the Week.
Meanwhile, Knights starter Jonathan Cannon picked up his third consecutive start of exactly six innings and exactly one run allowed. Cannon, 26, has been much more effective lately, and his performance made it so that this game was not stressful down the stretch. Hagen Smith pitched a scoreless seventh inning to pick up the save.

The Barons' (41-62) offense struggled out of the gate, managing only three hits, striking out 14 times and going 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position. Birmingham starter Connor McCullough also had a tough time getting hit up for two runs in the first, then Rocket City hit him again for four more in the fourth, sending him to the showers after just 3 2/3 innings. The Barons' bats were completely MIA for three innings until Anthony DePino finally snapped the no-hit and shutout with a solo shot in the fourth — his 14th bomb of the year — to at least put a dent in the deficit at 2-1.
The momentum was short-lived, however, as the Trash Pandas answered immediately with four more runs in the bottom of the fourth, blowing the contest wide open, 6-1. Birmingham scraped together a run in the fifth when Ryan Burrowes singled, and Samuel Zavala followed with an RBI double, but Rocket City answered right back after a Caleb Bonemer error helped plate another run in the bottom half. The Barons mustered an unearned run in the eighth, but the Trash Pandas matched it in the bottom of the frame to finish off the victory.
