Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent moved fast to calm the bond market this month. Two of the biggest names on Wall Street just moved just as fast to say it probably will not be enough. A rebuttal that landed within days of his own announcement.

Interest rate strategists at Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo both said the Treasury Department's expanded bond buybacks will do little to reverse the recent jump in long-term yields. Rates on 10- and 30-year Treasuries briefly dropped after the announcement, then rose again, erasing much of the initial relief, Bloomberg reported.
Goldman Sachs strategists George Cole and William Marshall wrote in an August 21 research note that the buyback expansion "does not address what we see as the main sources of recent long-end volatility." They added that the buybacks are "unlikely to meaningfully reset rate levels even if scaled up."
Wells Fargo strategists led by Erik Nelson made a similar case in their own August 21 note, arguing that lowering long-end yields would require macroeconomic shifts rather than Treasury market operations. They pointed to a slowdown in growth and inflation, less uncertainty around Federal Reserve policy, fiscal consolidation, or a decline in investment-grade corporate bond issuance as the kinds of catalysts actually needed to move yields lower.

An incident during which England bowler Brydon Carse was handcuffed outside a nightclub is being investigated by Derbyshire Police, who say they are looking into allegations of **** ault.
Images circulating on social media on Sunday showed Carse in handcuffs and surrounded by police officers while the pace bowler was on a night out in Derby on Saturday.
The 31-year-old was briefly arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said the incident would be investigated by the Cricket Regulator and, as a result, Carse was removed from the England squad for the second Test against Pakistan.
On Monday, Derbyshire Police said a man had been briefly detained outside Molly Malone's bar, before being released.

The Buccaneers signed wide receiver Jha'Quan Jackson on Wednesday, the team announced.
In a corresponding move, the Bucs waived wide receiver Dennis Houston with an injury designation.
Jackson originally entered the NFL as a sixth-round selection by the ****** ans in the 2024 draft. He appeared in 12 games as a rookie, catching one pass for 8 yards while contributing primarily as a return specialist. Ethereum's native token, Ether (ETH), has jumped more than 30% from its August lows near $1,800, briefly climbing above $2,500 as short liquidations and renewed buying accelerated its recovery.
But the rally is now running into major technical resistance, raising the risk of a short-term correction toward $2,000.
Ethereum's three-day chart shows ETH testing its 200-period exponential moving average (200-period EMA, blue) near $2,534.
The level has historically acted as an important long-term trend indicator. ETH is also testing a rising resistance trendline connecting its previous 2026 highs, creating an additional hurdle around the same price area.
Meanwhile, Ethereum's three-day relative strength index (RSI) has climbed to around 74.

Investors poured more than $56 billion into US-listed ETFs during the week ending Aug. 21, lifting year-to-date inflows past $1.3 trillion.
US equity ETFs took in about half the total at $25 billion. US fixed income added $12.5 billion, international equity funds gathered $5.6 billion, and international fixed income took in $2.5 billion.
Commodity ETFs were the notable standout, pulling in almost $5 billion, while currency funds at $2.2 billion and alternatives at $2.8 billion also had strong weeks.
The S&P 500 slipped a little over 1% last week, pulling back from the record highs it had set the week before. Bonds stayed under pressure even after the Treasury Department moved to support the market, announcing it would double the size of its long-dated debt buybacks.
Yields fell briefly on the news but quickly reversed, leaving the 30-year Treasury yield not far from the 19-year high above 5.3% it reached on Aug. 17.
The Treasury's attempts to keep long-term yields down revived the so-called debasement trade. The SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) took in $3.4 billion and the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) added more than $1 billion as both gold and bitcoin spiked. Gold is now back in the green, up around 8% on the year after spending much of the summer underwater. IBIT remains down about 10% in 2026, though that is a marked improvement from the 33% loss it was nursing at its worst point in June.
On the other side of the ledger, the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) led outflows, shedding $1.7 billion. Semiconductor stocks have been treading water lately, chopping up and down after starting the third quarter under pressure.
The broader AI trade remains intact, but it has grown increasingly volatile as investors go back and forth over whether the rally is sustainable and whether the group has already peaked.

Genoa sporting director Diego Lopez has been suspended until 8 September for his conduct following Saturday's defeat to Napoli.
According to Il Fatto Quotidiano, Serie A disciplinary judge Gerardo Mastrandrea found that Lopez improperly entered the pitch at full time despite not being listed on the matchday sheet, repeatedly contested a refereeing decision while adopting an aggressive attitude, continued those protests in the dressing room area and briefly prevented the referee from closing his own dressing room door.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has called for a severe punishment following Brydon Carse's latest involvement in a nightclub incident, saying the ECB must take action strong enough to deter the entire England cricket setup from similar behaviour.
Carse became the latest England player to attract scrutiny after a video emerged showing the fast bowler handcuffed by police outside a nightclub. He was briefly arrested while out with Durham team-mates Ben Stokes and Matthew Potts, leading the England and Wales Cricket Board to investigate the incident.
Carse had been part of England's squad for two of the three Tests against Pakistan but was released to play for Durham after being left out of the XI for the first Test at Leeds. He contributed 26 runs and returned figures of 2-82 as Durham beat Derbyshire inside three days.
The 30-year-old then went out with his Durham team-mates to celebrate the victory, during which the incident occurred.
The ECB subsequently confirmed that Carse "will no longer be available for selection" for the second Test against Pakistan at Lord's on Thursday. Hampshire right-arm seamer Sonny Baker has been called up as his replacement.
Vaughan believes the latest episode requires a response that sends a clear message across English cricket.
"Someone is going to have to get a punishment that sends a shiver down the whole England cricket team and right down through the programme, so that everyone knows that if you misbehave or bring any kind of bad reputation on to this team, you know what's going to come," former England captain Vaughan said on BBC Radio. "It's the only punishment that will really hurt players."
Carse's case comes amid a series of off-field incidents involving England players over the past year. Last October, white-ball captain Harry Brook was punched by a bouncer outside a nightclub in Wellington, New Zealand, while Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue were also present.
During the Ashes tour of Australia, Ben Duckett was filmed apparently drunk during England's holiday in Noosa.
Then, in June, former Test captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson broke a team curfew and were present when a member of England's security staff was punched by Saracens rugby player in a London nightclub.
Vaughan acknowledged that Carse could feel hard done by if he is punished heavily in light of the wider pattern of incidents.
"I hope Carse is getting good support around him. He is a character who can be a little bit loose and if you give him a bit of rope he'll take a huge amount of it. He needs people around him who are giving him better advice.
"I would feel for Carse if he is the one who takes the rap for what has happened over the past nine months, but somewhere, somehow, something has to be done to set a precedent that they won't stand for that behaviour any more," said Vaughan.

"Someone is going to have to get a punishment that sends a shiver down the whole England cricket team and right down through the programme, so that everyone knows that if you misbehave or bring any kind of bad reputation on to this team, you know what's going to come," former England captain Vaughan said on BBC Radio. "It's the only punishment that will really hurt players."
Carse's case comes amid a series of off-field incidents involving England players over the past year. Last October, white-ball captain Harry Brook was punched by a bouncer outside a nightclub in Wellington, New Zealand, while Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue were also present.
During the Ashes tour of Australia, Ben Duckett was filmed apparently drunk during England's holiday in Noosa.
Then, in June, former Test captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson broke a team curfew and were present when a member of England's security staff was punched by Saracens rugby player in a London nightclub.
Vaughan acknowledged that Carse could feel hard done by if he is punished heavily in light of the wider pattern of incidents.
"I hope Carse is getting good support around him. He is a character who can be a little bit loose and if you give him a bit of rope he'll take a huge amount of it. He needs people around him who are giving him better advice.
"I would feel for Carse if he is the one who takes the rap for what has happened over the past nine months, but somewhere, somehow, something has to be done to set a precedent that they won't stand for that behaviour any more," said Vaughan.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — RJ Luis Jr., a former St. John's standout who recently signed with LSU after spending time with two NBA clubs, was cleared by a court Monday evening to start practicing and potentially play for the Tigers this season.
Luis, who briefly was under contract with the Utah Jazz and Boston Celtics but never played in an NBA game, hugged LSU coach Will Wade after the ruling by East Baton Rouge Parish District Court judge Ronald R. Johnson.
After a five-hour hearing, Johnson granted the player's request for a preliminary injunction against the NCAA, which had argued Luis was unlikely to win reinstatement after leaving college to turn pro in 2025.
"This is precedent. It's monumental," said Baton Rouge-based attorney Tony Clayton, who represented Luis along with Elliot Abrams of Raleigh, North Carolina. "This allows him to go practice, go play and we'll let the legal process work itself out."
The timeline for that process was not immediately clear.

The Houston Astros took the field Sunday without manager Joe Espada leading the team. Espada missed Sunday's contest due to a family emergency, with bench coach Omar Lopez taking over.
While the Astros and Lopez did not go into specifics on what caused Espada to miss the game, Lopez implied the manager was having a difficult time, per ESPN.
"I just talked to him very briefly; he's not feeling well," Lopez told reporters. "He's very heartbroken how he's going through this situation with his family."
Lopez added that Espada had "probably one of the worst nights of his life [Saturday night]." Espada has been dealing with the issue for a few weeks, Lopez said.
Additionally, Lopez offered a plea to fans to remember that managers and players are people, and deal with off-the-field things throughout the season. Lopez added that it was his job to support Espada and lead the organization forward.

England fast bowler Brydon Carse is under investigation after an incident at a nightclub in Derby on Saturday, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said on Sunday.
Videos circulating on social media appeared to show Carse being led away from a club in handcuffs by four police officers. Carse, who is part of England's squad for the second Test against Pakistan, was seen outside a nightclub in Derby.
Durham and England teammate Matthew Potts was seen speaking to Carse, while former England captain Ben Stokes also appeared in the background.
Carse was briefly detained at the scene but was not arrested, according to The Telegraph. He returned to the team hotel soon afterwards.
"We are aware of an incident which is reported to have taken place in Derby last night, and are currently investigating," the ECB said in a statement.
"We will provide a further update when possible."
Carse and Potts had played for Durham earlier on Saturday as they beat Derbyshire by 338 runs in a second-division County Championship match in Derby.

The Washington Commanders' offseason has seen quite a few shifts. New faces have been brought in on both sides of the ball, and while general manager Adam Peters spent a lot of time and money on defense, he didn't neglect the offense, eventually signing wide receiver Stefon Diggs to give Jayden Daniels more offensive weapons.
One of the questions around the Commanders' offense is regarding the offensive line. Starting left tackle Laremy Tunsil suffered a torn triceps muscle during camp and is out for the remainder of the season shortly after signing a massive extension. Center Nick Allegretti finally returned to the practice field after missing time with a calf strain.
Sports Illustrated Senior NFL writer Albert Breer recently discussed what he's seen from the Commanders' offensive line during training camp. After talking about Tunsil's injury, Breer writes:
The staff briefly considered moving Josh Conerly Jr. back to his college position, but decided against it because they really liked his progress at right tackle, having gotten bigger and stronger. Plus, they didn't want him to have to rewire everything for this year and then go back to the right side next year. So, Brandon Coleman will be at left tackle, as he was as a rookie in 2024, which means Chris Paul will be the left guard. The other question is at center, where veteran Nick Allegretti, who's got high-end football IQ and is steady, is trying to hold off Julian Good-Jones and rookie Matt Gulbin. Also worth noting: Right guard Sam Cosmi might be the team's best lineman through camp, coming back from an injury-marred season last year.
The competition between Allegretti and Julian Good-Jones is probably not as close as Breer alludes to, but if it is, Peters may find himself in hot water for letting Tyler Biadasz go. "We are all members of the same tribe; Female Former Child Performers, and when one of us dies, it runs through all of us like an electrical current," Gilbert added "When three of us die so close together, something is very, very wrong."
Gilbert wrote that she felt like the trend of the entertainment industry exploiting children before discarding them is "getting worse" and that she herself was "nearly worked to death a few times."

MASON − For the second time in three years, Jessica Pegula will compete for the Rookwood Cup.
Pegula, the WTA's No. 3 ranked player, defeated defending champion Iga Swiatek 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in the semifinals of the 2026 Cincinnati Open on Saturday, Aug. 21. The American also snapped Swiatek's 10-match win streak that extended back to the National Bank Open.
In a match between two of the best returners in the WTA, there were 13 breaks across two hours and 47 minutes of play. Sets came down to who performed best down the stretch, which was Pegula in the first and third sets. It also helped that many shots down the line went in Pegula's favor, and vice versa for Swiatek.
Pegula broke Swiatek first. Swiatek pounced on Pegula's serve to break right back but dropped the next game to Pegula, which was briefly interrupted by a drizzle of rain. Two breaks later, Pegula won the first hold of the match at 4-2, before Swiatek held for the first time next.
Swiatek beat Pegula's serve again at 4-4, but couldn't break for the set when she had the chance. Instead, Pegula won the next three games, taking advantage of Swiatek rushing her shots to gain a 7-5 lead. On set point, Swiatek dumped a wide-open volley into the net.

Arthur Fils charged into the men's final of the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Masters on Saturday as he dispatched Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-4 in a match delayed for 45 minutes by rain and lightning.
In his first ever Masters 1000 final, 22-year-old Fils will play the winner of the all-American semi-final clash between Brandon Nakashima and Frances Tiafoe.
Fils beat Cobolli -- the Roland Garros finalist from Italy -- for the third time in their career series to become the youngest French Masters finalist since a 20-year-old Richard Gasquet in Toronto two decades ago.

Melissa Gilbert sent an emotional call to action regarding child actresses after Hayden Panettiere's death.
On Saturday, August 22, the former Little House on the Prairie child actress posted a lengthy Substack update addressing the deaths of Panettiere at 36 in August 2026, Michelle Trachtenberg at 39 in February 2025, and Daveigh Chase at 35 in June 2026.
"How is it possible that no one in the mainstream media has picked up on this?" Gilbert, 62, began her post. "… Three former female child actors of the same generation are gone. Tragically, heartbreakingly, agonizingly too soon."
She continued, "They are gone, and the question I have been turning over and over in my head is, 'WHY?' Why are these three sweet, wildly talented, vibrant, vital young women gone? And why does this all feel so personal to me? I did not know Hayden personally and only worked briefly with Mishy and Daveigh. It feels personal because I was them. As were Tatum, Kristy, Brooke, Patty, Anyssa, Dakota, Elle, Shirley, Britney, Jodie, Drew, and my sister, Sara, to name a few."
