Arsenal suffered a 3-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon, despite an improved second-half performance from Mikel Arteta's side.
The Emirates Cup clash marked the Gunners' return home during pre-season, with Christos Tzolis making his Emirates debut and Viktor Gyökeres leading the attack.

Arsenal continued their pre-season schedule in style with an impressive 4-1 victory over Girona in Catalonia, as teenage sensation Max Dowman once again underlined why excitement around the youngster continues to grow.
As reported by Sky Sports, the 16-year-old produced a goal and an ******* ist in a superb individual display, while new summer signing Christos Tzolis also marked the occasion with a goal as Mikel Arteta's side eased to victory.
It took ******* nal just 16 minutes to break the deadlock, and it was Dowman who created the opener with a moment of real quality.
The teenager turned brilliantly to escape his marker before threading an inch-perfect through ball into the path of Kai Havertz, who calmly finished beyond Paulo Gazzaniga to give the Gunners the lead.
Dowman continued to influence proceedings throughout the opening half and almost found the net himself before Tzolis doubled ******* nal's advantage on 32 minutes. Girona FC concluded a new preseason match this Saturday with the 49th Costa Brava Trophy - 150th Anniversary Estrella Damm at the Montilivi Stadium, where they fell to ****** nal FC 1-4 in a highly demanding game against one of the great clubs in European football.
The match allowed Quique Álvarez's team to continue accumulating competitive minutes and advance in their preparation for the 2026-27 season, against an opponent that showed a great pace of play from the very beginning. The Londoners took the lead in the 16th minute with a goal from Kai Havertz and extended their advantage in the 30th minute thanks to Christos Tzolis, reaching halftime with a favorable 0-2 scoreline.
After the break, Girona responded in the best possible way. The team started the second half with determination, and after two consecutive corners, Arnau Martínez reduced the deficit with a great header in the 50th minute, igniting Montilivi and reopening the game.
Arsenal's response, however, was immediate. Max Dowman restored the two-goal advantage just three minutes later, and Gabriel Jesus sealed the final 1-4 scoreline in the 55th minute. Despite the score, Girona continued to press for the opposing goal until the end, with chances from Minsu and Vladyslv Vanat that were met with strong saves from Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The final stretch of the match allowed both coaches to distribute playing time among much of their squads and continue giving prominence to younger players, one of the main objectives of this preparation period.

Well folks, it's that time again. August is here and so begins ******* nal's slate of preseason matches. Today, the Gunners face Girona to cap off a week of training in Spain. Max Holloway was awarded an anticlimactic technical knockout over the SBG Ireland cornerstone in the first round of their UFC 329 headliner on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. A disappointed and dejected McGregor (22-7, 10-5 UFC)—who had beaten the Hawaiian by unanimous decision in their first meeting in 2013—bowed out 1:09 into Round 1.

It was essentially over before it began. McGregor appeared to suffer the injury while throwing a jumping round kick inside the first 10 seconds. He collapsed on multiple occasions afterward, unable to put any weight on his right leg while he attempted to engage Holloway (28-9, 24-9 UFC). It soon became clear to all involved that McGregor was compromised to such an extent that he could not move forward with the match.

Meanwhile, former Cage Warriors champion Paddy Pimblett put Benoit St. Denis to sleep with a Peruvian necktie in the first round of their lightweight co-main event. St. Denis (17-4, 9-4 UFC) lost consciousness 52 seconds into Round 1.
Pimblett (24-4, 8-1 UFC) survived the initial burst of offense from the Frenchman and made him pay for an ill-conceived takedown attempt. The Next Generation MMA star zeroed in on St. Denis’ exposed neck, bullied him to the canvas and proceeded to tighten the strings on the necktie. Pimblett then moved to a seated position—with one leg over the back, the other over the head—and maximized torque until the onetime French Special Forces operator lost his grip on reality.

It was the second sub-minute finish for Pimblett in 28 professional appearances.

Further down the main draw, Mario Bautista avenged a January 2019 submission defeat to Cory Sandhagen and laid claim to a unanimous decision over the Elevation Fight Team rep in their three-round bantamweight rematch. All three cageside judges scored it the same: 29-28 for Bautista (18-3, 12-3 UFC).

Sandhagen (18-7, 11-6 UFC) was undone by two key moments. Bautista appeared to damage his left leg with an attempted Suloev stretch kneebar late in the first round and dropped him with a sweeping left hook in the third. The rest of their 15-minute battle was marked by give-and-take action—Sandhagen opened a cut near the MMA Lab export’s right eye in the second round—in which neither man gained a discernible advantage.

The French football federation president, Philippe Diallo, has condemned José Luis Chilavert after the former Paraguay goalkeeper said Les Bleus are "a squad from Africa".
"I condemn in the strongest possible terms the racist remarks made by José Luis Chilavert against the French national team, which undermine the values of respect, fraternity, and diversity in our football," Diallo wrote in a social media post on Saturday. "If he was once a great goalkeeper, this man has now fallen into disgrace."

Chilavert, one of Paraguay's most famous footballers, made the remarks in the run-up to his country's last-16 clash with France on Saturday. The 60-year-old posted a screenshot ⁠on social media of comments he attributed to former France forward Christophe Dugarry saying Paraguay did not stand a chance in the match.
"Christophe, you're right. In 1998 we faced the French and now ‌PY ⁠will face a squad from Africa," Chilavert wrote.

Germany’s 1-1 (3-4) loss on penalties to Paraguay shook Germany to its core. After a sluggish performance over 120 minutes against the massive underdogs, Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade missed their penalties to put Paraguay on the brink of progression. Manuel Neuer kept the last penalty and managed to just about keep Germany in the contest past the first five penalties, but it was clear the Germans had no idea who should take the next one. There was a round of discussion with multiple people refusing to take the pressure kick before center back Jonathan Tah shouldered responsibility and walked up to the penalty spot.
Unfortunately, the 30-year-old blazed the ball over the bar.
This tilted the shootout back in Paraguay’s favor and the next Paraguayan penalty taker, José Canales, did not let the opportunity go by, burying the ball in the top of the net to see Group D’s third placed team complete the miraculous upset.
After the match, Tah took full responsibility for the miss but also refused to stay down about it.
“To be honest, I felt good,” the Bayern Munich player told Sport1 (as captured by iMiaSanMia). “I wasn’t extremely nervous, which is what I actually thought I would be, but I didn’t hit it well. I would take one again next time. I think it’s important to take responsibility in difficult moments. That was something I specifically resolved to do for this tournament: to take responsibility – and that’s why I did it in that moment.”

While Alisson Becker and Brazil were able to celebrate early on Monday after a strong second half helped them to get past a determined ****** an 2-1 and progress to the Round of 16, that would prove to be the high point of the day for Liverpool's players at the 2026 World Cup.
The day's first Round of 32 tie was followed by Germany taking on Paraguay, with the UEFA giants one of the pre-tournament favourites and Paraguay the worst of South America's offerings at this World Cup and a side lucky to be in the knockouts at all. In group play they had been hammered by the United States, struggled to create anything in a nil-nil with Australia, and managed to eke past a Turkiye in turmoil with a 1-0 win.
That got them third in the group and a slot against Germany in Boston, and as expected Paraguay played a tight and defensive game and didn't create much of anything. Neither, though, did Germany, struggling more with Paraguay's low block than even Liverpool last season.
It was Paraguay who went up first when Julio Enciso scored late in the first half, going up for a free header six yards from goal when Germany fell asleep in open play shortly following a corner. Kai Havertz levelled early in the second half but even after that it rarely felt like Germany deserved to get the winner as the game dragged towards extra time and then penalties where they lost.
It was penalties in the day's final game, too, but the route to getting there was far more competitive and provided some of the best football of the tournament. Where Germany vs. Paraguay had been an underdog in a low block and a favourite failing to break them down and almost seeming to give up, Netherlands vs. Morocco was a clash of heavyweights.

Japan took a lead into the break but ran out of steam / played a bit too conservatively / struggled to deal with Brazil's push in the second half. Gabriel Magalhaes found Casemiro's head at the back post with an excellent cross in the 56th minute to level the score. Gabriel Martinelli scored a lovely control-and-shoot goal in the 96th minute to win the match, off a pass from potential future ******* nal teammate Bruno Guimaraes.

Julio Enciso put Paraguay ahead just before halftime very much against the run of play. Kai Havertz leveled the score in the 54th with a brilliant, glancing header. The Germans dominated possession and chances but couldn't find the back of the net. Havertz missed his leadoff penalty but the sides got back on level terms, i.e. it wasn't his miss that cost them, per se. Jonathan Tah's blast over the bar was the decisive miss. I'm coming around to the view that you need to have a really good reason for a centerback to take a penalty.
Morocco 1 (3) – Netherlands 1 (2)
Cody Gakpo scored in the 72nd minute to give the Netherlands a late lead. What a moment – his partner recently announced that they'd recently lost their second child during her pregnancy – and he collapsed to the turf in tears after scoring and was mobbed by his entire team, substitutes included. Issa Diop scored a 91st minute equalizer for Morocco. The Netherlands played an oddly conservative game, not their usual style. In the periods where they had control, they didn't really fashion much in the way of chances. Morocco were the protagonists for most of the match. The penalties were pretty poor, all around. Bart Verbruggen thought he'd saved an early one, but the ball bounced undernearth him and he ended up "kicking" it into the net with his heel as he landed from his dive. You don't see that often!

Paraguay fans packed into a bar to watch their country's biggest World Cup match in years were left screaming after the venue's TV suddenly slipped into sleep mode just as defender Jose Canale stepped up to take the kick that would eliminate Germany from the tournament in a gripping penalty shootout.
The interruption came after an absorbing contest between Paraguay and four-time World Cup champion Germany finished 1-1 after extra time.
Paraguay took the lead late in the first half through a Julio Enciso header before Germany's Kai Havertz equalized in the 52nd minute, forcing the match beyond regulation.
After both teams converted three of their first five penalty attempts, the shootout remained tied and moved into sudden death, where each side takes one penalty at a time until one team scores and the other misses in the same round.

The German media reacted with shock and condemnation after the four-time World champions were knocked out of the 2026 edition by Paraguay.
Germany have failed to reach the last-16 in any of the past three tournaments, haven't won a World Cup knockout game since the final in Rio de Janeiro in 2014.
Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, who at the age of 38 became the youngest coach in a World Cup knockout ⁠stage in 40 years, opted for an offensive line-up, giving his ⁠team's top scorer in the tournament, Deniz Undav, his first start.

Shortly before 1:30 in Germany in the early hours of Tuesday, the four-time world champions knew: the tournament in Canada, Mexico and USA was already over for them after the first knockout match. The DFB-Elf lost 4-3 on penalties to Paraguay following a 1-1 draw in the round of 32.
Against one of the best third-placed teams, Germany fell behind to a goal from Encisco following a corner in the 41st minute. As was the case in the 2-1 defeat in the last group match against Ecuador, Julian Nagelsmann's side failed to exert the necessary dominance and determination against the underdogs from South America, and despite having more possession, clear-cut chances remained hard to come by for much of the game.
However, with 54 minutes gone, Kai Havertz equalised with a header. Neither team managed to create much in attack after that, meaning it went to penalties. Germany thought they'd won it when Bayern defender Jonathan Tah powered a header into the net from a corner, but the goal was disallowed following review because, according to referee Jalal Jayed, substitute Waldemar Anton had impeded Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill. Germany tried to force the issue now and created more opportunities, but were repeatedly denied by Gill. And the Paraguay shot-stopper was the hero in the penalty shootout too as his side came out on top by a narrow margin despite a save from Manuel Neuer.
Paraguay therefore advance to the round of 16, where they'll face the winners of the meeting between France and Sweden this Saturday (23:00 CEST) in Philadelphia.

Finally, Uli Stielike has company. For 44 years, an outstanding player for Borussia Monchengladbach, Real Madrid and his country stood alone as the only German man to miss a penalty in a World Cup shootout. Then three came in a flurry: Kai Havertz with a tame attempt, Nick Woltemade with a still tamer one and Jonathan Tah with his wild, skied effort the most crucial of the three before Jose Canale confirmed their fate.
The old stereotypes of Germany football, the Turniermannschaft with their menacing inexorableness, are being destroyed. An exit to Paraguay did not feel very German; but now a staple of the business end of tournaments have failed to make the last 16 of a third successive World Cup. Germany's last victory in a knockout tie remains the 2014 final.
Since then, they have lost, either over 90 minutes or on penalties, to Mexico, South Korea, ******* an, Ecuador and Paraguay, each a result that would have seemed unGerman. There had been pessimism about this week from some in the German footballing world: but in anticipation of a last-16 defeat to France in Philadelphia. Instead, it is Paraguay who head to Pennsylvania. German are off home.
For Julian Nagelsmann, while he said he would "love" to continue in the job, it is presumably to face unemployment. He has been stalked by Jurgen Klopp at this tournament, the spectre of a possible successor coming from the charismatic former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool manager, following his country on punditry duties.
The eventual verdict may be that Nagelsmann has flattered to deceive as the Bundestrainer. Germany have made spectacular starts to two tournaments under him, walloping Scotland 5-1 and Curacao 7-1 but then tailed off. A quarter-final appearance in Euro 2024 could have been a platform for progress. Now Nagelsmann, like Joachim Low and Hansi Flick before him, has become a manager with serious feats on his CV to struggle in a World Cup.
