The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has issued an official clarification on Law 20.4.2.5 concerning batters who are not ready to face a delivery, following two contrasting incidents during The Hundred at Lord's.

The clarification comes after umpires made different decisions in seemingly similar situations involving Nicholas Pooran and Marizanne Kapp. The MCC, the custodian of the Laws of Cricket, has now explained what constitutes an "attempt to play the ball" when deciding whether a delivery should be called dead.
The first incident occurred during the August 6 men's fixture between MI London and London Spirit. Liam Livingstone twice stopped during his run-up before eventually delivering the ball, with Pooran indicating that he was not ready. When Livingstone bowled, Pooran withdrew his bat from the line of the delivery and made no attempt to play it. The ball hit the stumps, but umpire Mike Burns called it dead.

The MCC confirmed the decision was correct, noting that Pooran had not attempted to play the ball and had adequate reason for not being ready.
Three days later, a similar situation unfolded during the women's match between London Spirit and Birmingham Phoenix. Kapp appeared unprepared when Linsey Smith delivered the ball but instinctively moved her bat towards it and made contact. Umpire Mark Newell called it a fair delivery, and the MCC confirmed that decision was also correct.

The MCC explained that the crucial factor is whether the batter attempted to play the ball, not whether meaningful contact was made.
Under Law 20.4.2.5, a delivery can be called dead when the striker is not ready and does not attempt to play the ball, provided the umpire is satisfied that the batter had an adequate reason for being unprepared.

The MCC stated: "Pooran, perhaps knowing the Law, actively withdrew his bat from the line of the ball".

In Kapp's case, the governing body said she "instinctively prodded at the ball and made contact with it. As soon as she attempted to hit the ball – and note the Law talks about "attempting" to play the ball rather than actually making contact with it – the ball would not be Dead, and the ball will count in the over, as correctly identified by umpire Newell."

The MCC also pointed to Law 41.10.1, which states: "It is unfair for a batter to waste time."

"In the Pooran/Livingstone example, there was frustration on both sides and the natural rhythm of the over had been disrupted. Umpire Burns was correct in stating that the ball was Dead and should not count, and he would have been sensible to remind both players that the batter must not delay things and the bowler cannot overly rush things more than normal," the MCC further wrote.

"I ***** love Foucault. I ***** with Foucault hard," enthused Supriya Ganesh, star of The Pitt, in a recent interview with New York magazine. Ganesh, who uses she/they ***** ouns, never felt comfortable with rigid gender and ***** uality labels, and Foucault's The History of ***** uality, Volume I showed her how these categories have in fact varied across cultures and through history: "I think this idea of defining ***** uality is very new—or at least that's the argument he's making … it really illuminated a lot of that for me."
Ganesh was unwittingly providing fresh evidence for the central argument of The Frenchmen: Or, My Life in Theory, which proposes that a small group of dead twentieth-century intellectuals are "crucial for understanding the world we inhabit today." Written by Emily Eakin, a senior editor at The New York Times Book Review, The Frenchmen focuses on eight French or French-speaking theorists (Louis Althusser, Roland Barthes, Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Félix Guattari, Jacques Lacan, and Paul de Man) who, she argues, "permanently alter[ed] how we think not only about bedrock philosophical ideas but about the role of language in shaping those beliefs and everything else."
Eakin's Frenchmen are an eclectic group, differing in interests, politics, and methods. Two were practicing psychoanalysts. Most were academics, working in fields including philosophy, linguistics, semiotics, anthropology, history, and comparative literature. They wrote on topics as varied as schizophrenia, prison architecture, photography, Edgar Allan Poe, and (in Barthes's case) their mom. What unites them, according to Eakin, is their emphasis on systems, as opposed to individuals, and their attention to the complex and contradictory ways that language operates. Instead of taking for granted (as the existentialists did) that people are autonomous free agents defined by their choices, they wrote about the ways people and texts are created and constrained by powerful yet unstable structures of knowledge and language—an idea that resonates in our era of inescapable algorithms and artificial intelligence. ("Chatbots frighten us," Eakin writes, "to the degree that they make literal theory's suggestion that thought does not require a human thinker.")
"Deconstruction," an ***** ytical method developed by Derrida, came to define French theory and is at the heart of Eakin's book. She defines it as "a style of reading" that "took apart" a text and left it in pieces, showing how it was undone by its own internal contradictions. A common deconstructive move is to show how the binary terms that a text's argument depends on—for example, speech versus writing—are not actually opposed after all. In one case, he dealt the star; in the other, he acquired one. If I find it hard to quibble, it could be because at the FanDuel Sportsbook the Sox have the 5th best odds, -$1500, to win the whole dang thing! To be fair to the Rays — which doesn't feel natural, but whatever — they're also at -$1500. Both teams are ahead of the Phillies at +1900, the Cubs at +2200 and the Angels and Mets at a cool +100000 each. (Perhaps you can predict baseball?) Anyhow, the Yankees are the only team with shorter odds in the AL than the Sox and the Rays at +600. But they stink, so all is fine.
However this season ends, it's reignited a spark around here that hasn't been lit since 2021 and hasn't roared in nearly 10 years. The Blue Jays were two outs away from winning it all last year and changing the whole labor narrative, some say, tho ultimately I don't think by much. Meaning the Sox have a shot. While I love that the Dodgers (a preposterous +160) do their thing, they're up against a emboldened, whiny club of failsons who've had it out for them from the word go and this is something of a last stand. The only other thing that can bring the Dodgers down, seemingly, is the Sox, who just swept them in LA. They're now Sox likely to make the playoffs (-950) and are closing in on the division (Rays -110, Yankees +155) at +430. The sportsbooks plainly recognize, respect and reflect Bres's ambition. The reward is ours.

LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England — Their journeys to professional golf couldn't have been more contrasting. Lydia Ko was a child prodigy; Ryan Fox was a late bloomer who didn't turn pro until age 25. Ko rose to fame when, at 14, she became the youngest winner of a tour event and, at 18, became the youngest major winner. Fox was 39 when he won his first major at the British Open two weeks ago.
But they are united by their homeland of New Zealand and by shared experiences in team rooms. Those moments began with pranks at the 2010 World Amateur Teams Championships. These days, the New Zealand bonding sessions play out on a far bigger stage—at the past three Olympic games.
"We went to World Team Ams when I was 14," Ko recalled on Wednesday at the AIG Women's British Open at Royal Lytham. "I don't know if I'm allowed to say it, but he may or may not have tricked me to think my ***** e glass was—I thought it was my ***** e glass—but it was red wine. He's always been the same."
Which is why, two weeks ago, Ko was in tears watching from the U.S. as Fox took the British Open by the scruff of the neck with weekend rounds of 62-68 at Royal Birkdale. Fox stole the claret jug from clubhouse leader Cameron Young with three-under performance in his final six holes, including a walk-off birdie on the 72nd to win by one.
"I was on the West Coast in the U.S. so there was quite a bit of time difference," Ko said Wednesday. "I went to go work out and everywhere I went I was like, 'Please turn on the Open.' It ended up not working on the TV, so I had my trainer turn it on my cell phone and I [also] had it on my cell phone. I can't remember my work out at all."

Germany sporting director Rudi Völler has reflected on Julian Nagelsmann's tenure as head coach of the national team, admitting that the former Bayern Munich boss faced a level of scrutiny that made his job increasingly difficult.
According to Völler, Nagelsmann's public standing deteriorated to the point where virtually every decision he made was met with criticism, regardless of the reasoning behind it.
"One thing that became very difficult during Julian Nagelsmann's time as national coach - and that's something I underestimated myself - was his standing with the media and the fans. At some point, it didn't matter what decision he made; people reacted negatively, which made every decision appear to be the wrong one."
Völler pointed to the contrasting reactions Nagelsmann received when dealing with his players, arguing that the coach found himself in a no-win situation.
"The best examples were the occasions when Julian criticised players - he was criticised for doing so. When he tried to take the pressure and blame off the players, he was criticised for that as well. That's simply part of a coach's job. In the end, the results are what count, and unfortunately, those were disappointing towards the end."

Stirling earned his Ultimate Fighting Championship contract with a knockout win onContender Series in 2024. He was sharing the locker room withQuemuelOttoni, who was set to face KodySteele. Ottoni eventually didn't make the walk to the Octagonand Stirling has now detailed what happened behind the scenes.
Stirling (10-0) recently revealed that Ottoni (12-4) was aggressivetowards Steele, and even other fighters, throughout fight weekuntil the weigh-ins. However, the Brazilian's nerves got the betterof him right before stepping out for his bout and he allegedlystarted crying backstage, even ripping off his hand wraps multipletimes.

Cutman Brad Tate, who was in charge of wrapping Ottoni, refused torepeat it after a point. The bout was eventually called off andSteele won his contract in a later Contender Series outing.

"The guy that was on Contenders [Series] was probably the worstone," Stirling told Full Send MMA. "He was fighting Kody Steele. Hechoked out AlexPereira back in the day. I was in the locker room with him… Atthe weigh-ins, he is puffing his chest, he is even looking at me,like, 'You wanna go?' I'm like, 'Bro, save it for tomorrow.' He'sstaunching Kody Steele out at the weigh-ins. And I was thinking,'This is going to be a banger.' We get to the fight night and hejust started crying. He took his gloves off three or four times.They had to re-wrap his hands. I think he had cutman Tate. Thecutman said, 'F*ck this guy, I'm not wrapping his handsanymore.'"

Both Tate and Steele have confirmed Stirling's story about Ottoni,who had choked out UFC superstar Pereira in the latter'sprofessional MMA debut in 2015. Ottoni and Pereira's careers havetaken contrasting trajectories since. While Pereira went on tobecome a two-division champion, Ottoni is yet to make it out of theregional scene. He has fought only once since the Contender Seriesfiasco, suffering a first-round technical knockout loss.

Meanwhile, the undefeated Stirling already has five UFC wins to hisname. The Kiwi is now scheduled to face JanBlachowicz (29-11) on less than three weeks' notice at UFC Belgrade in Serbia on Aug. 1.
