The West Jersey Football League Liberty Division has taken a big step up in competition from a year ago. Only two teams, ******* berland and St. Joseph Hammonton, remain from last year. Every two years, the divisions undergo change in the WJFL, and this is the first year of the new cycle.
Lower Cape May won the division last year, but the Tigers are now competing in the WJFL Memorial Division.
This seems to be a division in which virtually any team could make the case for contending.
Timber Creek (2-8, 1-3) moves over from the Classic Division after playing one of the toughest schedules in South Jersey. In one three-game stretch, Timber Creek played three eventual state champions – Camden in Group 2, Cedar Creek (Group 3) and Washington Township (Group 5). In addition, the Chargers also faced South Jersey Group 5 finalist Kingsway. While there will be plenty of competition on this year's schedule, nothing is as brutal as the one the Chargers faced last season. With eight starters back on offense and seven on defense, coach Brian Wright's Chargers should contend in the Liberty Division,
St. Joseph Academy (7-2, 4-1) might be undergoing the biggest change of any team in South Jersey. First off, after two years off as a head coach, Sal Marchese Jr. takes over the program. Marchese was both a standout player and coach at Delsea. He was the head coach for 31 seasons at his alma mater. During that time, Delsea won 249 games, 11 sectional ******* les and a state Group 3 crown in his final game as a coach in 2023. Last year he served as an ******* istant coach at Williamstown.
