It looks like the Denver Broncos were this close to seeing their 2025 season take an eye-popping turn. On Monday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees had considered coming out of retirement to join the Broncos in the postseason last year.
Per Schefter, Brees had conversations with the team's then-offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and offensive ****** istant Pete Carmichael about the quarterback potentially playing in the AFC championship. The Broncos had lost starting QB Bo Nix to a broken ankle in the final plays of the divisional win over the Buffalo Bills, leaving an opening at QB1 that was being filled by backup Jarrett Stidham.
The 47-year-old Brees said that he wanted to work out first to see how his body was doing, but "discomfort" in Brees' wrist led him to turn down the offer, per Schefter.
Lombardi and Carmichael, along with Broncos head coach Sean Payton, all worked with Brees during his time with the New Orleans Saints. However, Payton only heard about the plot to entice Brees back to the NFL this offseason, with the plan leaving him "both fascinated and flabbergasted," per Schefter

A goal midway through the second half wound up the night's only offense as the Utah Royals beat the Houston Dash 1-0 on Saturday night at Shell Energy Stadium.
Utah's Mina Tanaka notched the game's only tally at the 69-minute mark, sending the Dash (7-5-12, 26 points) to their fourth consecutive loss. Three of those defeats have been by 1-0 margins.
The Dash failed to register a shot on goal against the Royals, who had six and controlled possession for 55 percent of the match.
Houston next plays Sunday, Sept. 20 against Boston Legacy FC at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. Kickoff is 1 p.m. CT. The Dash's next home game is Oct. 4 against Washington.

PORT ST. LUCIE – It was the proverbial what a difference a week makes, not only for Makai White but the entire Vero Beach High football team.
White nearly was perfect in his first full week as the Vero Beach starting quarterback, and all three phases contributed in the scoring in a 56-0 whitewash of St. Lucie West Centennial High in a Class 6A-District 8 game Friday, Sept. 11 at South County Regional Park.
Coming off a 38-6 setback to nationally ranked St. Frances Academy of Baltimore, Vero Beach turned the tides on the Eagles in the district opener for both teams.
Vero Beach exploded for 35 points in the first quarter and 49 in the first half.

With training camp fast approaching, several Central Division teams still have a few questions to answer. Jalen Duren's contract situation is still unresolved in Detroit; Victor Oladipo has been seen as an option for the Chicago Bulls, and the Pistons are even connected to Michael Porter Jr. as a potential future trade target.
The biggest storyline ongoing is Duren's restricted free agency, but there appears to be a little more optimism about that agreement. The Athletic's Sam Amick reported that the financial difference between Duren and the Pistons isn't as big as it was previously believed.
"I mean, as far as the state of affairs, I don't know which way it's going to go. There is a gap. It's not as big as I thought it was before having a few recent conversations. It seems like there's, you know, there's a window here to get something done and put him back in a Pistons jersey."
"I think what's interesting is, like, the QO (qualifying offer) has become such a nuclear option for players and also for teams that it's fair to wonder, like, 'Man, if they can't completely bridge that gap, how do both sides feel about the QO?'" Amick continued. "Because, even from a human standpoint, we, as you guys know, haven't seen a lot of people successfully take that route."
Duren has been seeking more than $40 million a year, and the Pistons have been around $35 million per season. ESPN's Tim MacMahon recently put the Pistons' offer in the ballpark of $180 million over five years. The alternative is Duren accepting the $9.6 million qualifying offer and becoming an unrestricted free agent next season. This has been described as a nuclear option because of the risk it carries for both sides. The Kings do remain an interested party in a sign-and-trade possibility, or even a potential 2027 destination, because they can create the most max cap ******* e then, but the Pistons have reportedly had no interest in a sign-and-trade as of now.

We're conditioned to crave the lone, heroic signal-caller who bounces back from big hits, makes bigger throws and keys game-winning drives in the final minutes. It's what we expect, and what we know.
It's awkward to imagine those big moments being spread out among two or three guys. And it's just as easy to dismiss the whole system as a gimmick offense — and who wins league ****** les with those?

A clip from the latest Forged in Foxborough episode has gone viral.
It's a video from the New England Patriots' joint training camp practice against the Philadelphia Eagles. A.J. Brown being traded to New England back in June instantly made it one of the most anticipated joint training camp practices of the year.
The Patriots came out firing on Day 1 with the offense consistently getting the better of the Eagles' defense. Most notably, Patriots quarterback Drake Maye's connection with Brown seemed unstoppable at times. There was one sequence where Brown separated from a defender on a route and caught an easy touchdown pass from Maye.
Williams could be seen standing on the sidelines trolling his former Eagles teammates, who had to watch Brown score for the Patriots.
"Guess who? Guess who?" Williams said.

Pittsburg football coach Charlie Ramirez couldn't have been more complimentary about the St. John Bosco-Bellflower juggernaut program his Pirates will host Friday in a showdown of state-ranked teams - Sports Illustrated has the Braves No. 2 and Pittsburg No. 9.
His judgment was largely based on a Week 4 2024 road trip the Pirates made to the four-time state and two-time national champion. He used terms like "first-rate" and "classy" when describing the treatment Bosco coach Jason Negro and director of football operations Jessie Christensen afforded the Pirates.
"We're going to make sure that we give them proper welcoming and acknowledgement for them making this journey up here," he said. "We're going to throw out our orange (team color) carpet and try to extend them all the same courtesy."
Right down to the scoreboard.
It's doubtful Pittsburg will be able to hand Bosco an identical - even similar - defeat as the Braves beat the Pirates 35-14 that season, but they'll surely give it the old college try.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The Illini have sold out reserved lower bowl season tickets in consecutive years for the first time in program history. This comes in a period of resurgence under head coach Shauna Green, who will be heading into her fifth season with the orange and blue.
Under Green, the Illini have finally found their footing. After a 20-year NCAA Tournament drought, Green has led the Illini to three appearances in four years on top of notching three 20-win seasons. Illinois, who had one of the youngest teams in the nation last year, is poised for a breakthrough year, hoping to make it to the second weekend in March.
With incredible team and coaching performances, the Illini have seen a surge in attendance. Three of the top five home crowd attendance records have come under Green, including the third sellout matchup in program history against USC this past February. The total home attendance for the 2025-26 season neared 100,000, making the campaign the second-most successful in Illini women's basketball history.
The orange and blue have had fantastic performances at State Farm Center in Coach Green's tenure. In the past four seasons, the Illini are 51-15 in Champaign.
The Illini have also racked nine ranked wins with Green, five of which were at home, including a massive upset against No. 7 ranked Maryland in a New Year's Day 2026 showdown.

Borussia Mönchengladbach are heading into the 2026/27 Bundesliga season with renewed optimism. After finishing 12th last season, the club decided to stick with headcoach Eugen Polanski, despite some supporters calling for a change in the dugout.
The decision could prove to be a smart one. Gladbach have enjoyed an outstanding pre-season, strengthened their squad with an interesting group of young players and are set to welcome back one of their most important players in Tim Kleindienst.
There are still major questions to answer, particularly following the departure of former captain Rocco Reitz. But the Foals appear to have taken a step in the right direction.
If results are anything to go by, Gladbach have had one of the most impressive pre-seasons of any Bundesliga club.
The Foals won all eight of their pre-season matches, scoring an incredible 45 goals while conceding just seven.

German football icon Lothar Matthäus has criticized new Germany coach Jürgen Klopp for announcing his first squad on a Thursday while players are readying for Europa League and Conference League club action.
Klopp will name the squad for four Nations Leagues matches starting in the Netherlands on September 24 on Thursday, September 17. Matthäus thinks it should be pushed back until the Friday.
"Even if they have already been informed in advance by the national coach, the players could be disturbed in their concentration by constant questions. It does something to a player's psyche if you are asked about it before an important match," Matthäus said in a column for broadcaster Sky.
"I would really ask Jürgen Klopp to make the nominations in future on a Friday morning or at midday."
He added that if a player is injured in a European match on the Thursday, no late call-up would be needed and a new player could be drafted in before the squad was made public.

The last few days have been busy for some of the six players that Real Madrid have signed during the summer transfer window. Carlos Espi was presented on Sunday, and the same can now be said for Marc Cucurella and Yan Diomande.
Cucurella was unveiled by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez on Monday, and after his presentation, he spoke to the club's official media channels. As per MD, he expressed his delight at joining "the best club in the world".
"It's a source of pride (to be presented as a Real Madrid player). It is a very special day for me and my family. The summer has been long, but I've been enjoying it for a while, a few weeks now. It is an honour to be able to wear the shirt of the best club in the world; everything he has won and everything he has left to win. To be a part of this is a very special thing."
Cucurella also recalled the process of him becoming a Real Madrid player, including the first time he became aware that they wanted to sign him.
"I didn't believe it at first. I remember that my agents had written to me. We have a group with my agents, my wife and I and they told me to call them. Joey Porter Jr. has earned a raise. The Pittsburgh Steelers, however, are reticent to make him the league's highest-paid cornerback.
While the two sides may simply be playing hardball in negotiations, NFL insider Ian Rapoport suggests a trade could be imminent. While Porter was the 32nd pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, that was also the year the Miami Dolphins were docked a first round pick for tampering -- making the son of the Steelers star the first selection of Day 2. That's important, because it also means there's no fifth-year team option on his rookie contract, making 2026 the final season he's bound to Pittsburgh.
The Steelers could opt to let him play out 2026 and recoup a third-round compensatory pick in 2028 should he leave in free agency. They could choose to franchise tag him next spring in hopes of working out an extension. They could take a look at their devolving quarterback situation and opt to invest in the defense, paying Porter something short of Devon Witherspoon's $33 million per year and work out a long-term deal with a player who's been a Pro Bowl snub in at least two of his three seasons.
Or they could opt to deal him should a team be willing to part with a first round pick to bring him aboard. Who'd fit the bill?
Washington overhauled its defense this spring and could have a majority of new starters on that side of the ball. Adding Porter Jr. would punch up a pass defense that finished 31st in dropback expected points added (EPA) allowed. He'd also move Mike Sainristil into the slot, where he's been more effective as a pro, and give the team some insurance should Trey Amos struggle in his second season as a pro.

At 21 years old, San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle is one of the league's most exciting young talents. Throughout his first two NBA seasons, the former UConn guard has a Rookie of the Year Award and an NBA Finals appearance to his name. Last season, Castle averaged 16.7 points, 7.4 **** ists, 5.3 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 0.3 blocks.
However, there are two things between Castle and an ascension into superstardom. Turnovers are one of those, as Castle averaged 3.2 giveaways per game last year. Another has been 3-point shooting. Although Castle's 33.2% mark from 3-point range was an improvement from his rookie campaign (28.5%), the third-year guard still has some room for improvement.
Luckily for Spurs fans, Castle has been working tirelessly on his jump shot this summer. Castle's trainer, Olin Simplis, recently spoke about Castle's process this summer, saying, "With Steph, it's also about making sure that we create the proper energy and synergy on every rep. He's such a high-volume guy defensively that sometimes his sequence in his shooting patterns is off. So I think fatigue sets in. If you don't have the proper energy from the ground through your shot line, sometimes the ball reaches the pocket later than it's supposed to during your sequence."
If Castle can shoot near league average from 3-point range (35-36%), he'll be able to cement himself not only as a premiere two-way talent but also as a three-level scoring threat.

DETROIT — Based on what the Washington Commanders were presenting, Detroit Lions quarterback Luke Altmyer and tight end Jackson Meeks both anticipated man coverage.
But the Commanders dropped into zone at the snap, muddying what Altmyer thought was going to be a simple read. The Lions were running a play with a mesh-rail concept, a man-beating strategy designed to potentially get running back Trayveon Williams open out of the backfield. Ideally, a linebacker would be manned up against Williams, and that defender would have to sift through traffic to reach the running back.
"It was going to be really, really good for man coverage," Altmyer explained. "They ended up dropping into a three-deep zone it looked like. You don't really draw it up for three-deep zone. ... Luckily my O-line gave me a good amount of time, (the Commanders) rushed four.
"I was able to escape a little bit, and Meeks kind of just found a big, open ****** e."

Because there are so many potential avenues to victory, there are an equal number of ways to suddenly lose everything. Each weekend, at least one fighter with all the advantages on paper will instead taste defeat in violent fashion. Denying that disorder is what makes an extensive win streak or dominant ***** le reign so impressive. Controlling chaos is the name of the game, and it's why we expect our greatest of all time (GOAT) candidates to be untouchable.
Think about prime Anderson Silva, Jon Jones, or Georges St. Pierre: they didn't have close fights very often. Each of them spent about a decade thoroughly dominating their field, rarely looking hurt or tired as they outclassed the opposition. There are notable exceptions for each man, but that's why they were notable! Their true battles against the respective likes of Chael Sonnen, Alexander Gustafsson, and Johnny Hendricks were all shocking at the time, rare moments where this pantheon of greats looked like mortal humans.
Islam Makhachev, meanwhile, is one of the most accomplished UFC fighters of all time. Even more impressively, he did so against a larger opponent with top-notch skills and great tactics.
