WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Temperatures aren't backing down during the first week of high school football practice, so teams are trying to prioritize safety while also preparing for the season.
If the heat rises ahead of practice time, the Kansas State High School Activities ****** ociation recommends adding water breaks or shortening practices. In extreme temperatures, teams may also be forced to cancel practice.
With a heat advisory in place for parts of south Kansas on Tuesday, schools in Wichita are looking for ways to work around the temperatures.
"Our coaches are trained that whenever there's a water break that's scheduled on their practice schedule that it's a non-negotiable," said Chris Asmussen, USD 259 Director of Athletics. "So, kids need to go get that get out of the heat when they notice things, and we try to keep as many eyeballs on kids as possible."

Dean Wade was just like everybody else when the Philadelphia 76ers signed LeBron James. He was enjoying the offseason with his family as he was outside with his daughter and nephews. He didn't even have his phone near him when the news broke. He found out when he went back inside.
"I think I was at my sister's house, actually," Wade marveled as he told Sixers Wire. "I took my daughter and my nephews were playing outside, and I didn't really have my phone, but I checked my phone, and everyone was just like, 'Dude, what do you think? What do you think?' I'm like, 'What are you talking about?' And then, yeah, I looked at my phone. I was like, 'Wow.' It was crazy. It really was. It, like, doesn't even feel real, really."
James will enter his 24th season still playing at such a high level. Wade, 29, was six years old when James made his NBA debut back in October of 2003. Playing next to a guy like James is an interesting moment for somebody like him at this stage of his career.
"Yeah, absolutely," Wade smiled. "Playing with somebody that's considered the greatest of all time is definitely a surreal thing. I mean, it's awesome. The opportunity is going to be amazing, and I'm excited for it, but yeah, it does feel kind of surreal and kind of different."
Wade is among the new additions to a Sixers roster that has gone through a complete overhaul in the 2026 offseason. After seven seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers after going undrafted out of Kansas State, the Wichita, KS native is joining the Sixers and looking to make an impact alongside James and Co. He sat down with Sixers Wire and reflected on his journey to Philadelphia:

LAWRENCE — As Bill Self reflected Wednesday on the run the Kansas basketball alumni team was making in The Basketball Tournament, he did so before JHX Hoops suffered a 78-65 defeat against La Familia.
JHX Hoops, KU's team, lost in the finals of the alumni portion of the bracket against La Familia, Kentucky's team. The defeat ended a run that saw JHX Hoops eliminate both Kansas State's alumni team and Wichita State's before reaching that point. JHX Hoops just fell short of being able to play for the TBT's $2 million prize, set to go to the winner of the matchup between the winner of the alumni side of the bracket and the winner of the non-alumni side of the bracket.
But Self, who coaches Kansas basketball, did provide some insight into JHX Hoops' TBT run that remains worthwhile to dive into. Self, who coached Sherron Collins and Tyshawn Taylor when they played at KU, followed what the alumni team was able to accomplish this year. Collins was listed as the team's head coach on the TBT website, while Taylor was listed as a player/GM/owner.
RELATED: Here's what's impressed Bill Self about Tyran Stokes, and what's next
Here are a few takeaways from what Self had to say:

NEW YORK — The Minnesota Twins acquired left-handed reliever A.J. Minter from the New York Mets for minor league infielders Bruin Agbayani and Billy Amick, reinforcing a thin bullpen ahead of the trade deadline.
The 19-year-old Agbayani, who is the son of former Mets fan favorite Benny Agbayani, is a middle infielder who hit .268 in 10 games for Fort Myers in low Class A this season. The sixth-round 2025 draft pick, a native of Hawaii, has been limited by injuries.
The 23-year-old Amick batted .217 with 23 homers in 86 games for Double-A Wichita this season, playing first and third base. He was a second-round draft pick in 2024.
Minter had a 2.35 ERA in 23 innings with 20 strikeouts and only two walks. He didn't make his season debut until May 26, going more than a year between major league appearances. His 2025 season ended after 13 appearances when he injured his left lat muscle in his back and needed surgery.
Minter signed a two-year, $22 million contract with the Mets in 2025. His 2024 season with the Atlanta Braves also was cut short by a torn labrum in his left hip, but when he's been healthy he's been one of baseball's most effective late-game lefties. The 33-year-old, who was a second-round 2015 draft pick by the Braves, has a 3.18 ERA with 456 strikeouts in 382 2/3 innings over 420 career appearances.

La Familia advanced to the Alumni Bracket championship after knocking off Boeheim's Army on Sunday afternoon, but would have to wait until Monday night to figure out who their next opponent would be. Now, we officially know who La Familia will face off against, and it's an old friend that UK has a ton of history with: The Kansas Jayhawks (JHX Hoops).
JHX Hoops took down the defending champs from Wichita State, also known as the AfterShocks, on Monday night, 64-59, with a big-time 3-pointer as the dagger by former Wooden Award winner Frank Mason III.
Zeke Mayo (Kansas 2024-25), who transferred in from South Dakota State, where he had quite the collegiate career before making his way to Lawrence. In the game versus the AfterShocks on Monday, he led JHX Hoops in scoring with 25 of his own.
Kentucky and Kansas have a ton of history in college basketball, facing off a grand total of 36 times, with the Cats coming out victorious in 24 of those games. So now it's only right that the two face off in another level of basketball in The Basketball Tournament.
Wednesday's matchup will decide which TBT team will be the champion of the Alumni bracket and ultimately face off against the Non-Alumni bracket champion for $2 million.

After Monday, this was shocking.
Former Lobo Vance Jackson hit seven 3-pointers and scored a game-high 29 points to lead The Enchantment, a UNM and NMSU alumni basketball team, to a stunning 74-68 win over the Aftershocks, a team of Wichita State alumni, on Thursday night in Game 2 of the best of three TBT opening round series in Wichita's Koch Arena.
The decisive Game 3 in the first round of the $2 million, winner-take-all tournament is Friday at 7 p.m. MT (8 p.m. CT in Wichita). The game will be broadcast on either FS1 or FS2.
In Monday's Game 1, the defending champion Aftershocks blew out Enchantment, 98-77, in a game that wasn't even as close as that 21-point deficit suggested.
Thursday night, Jackson scored 17 of his 25 by halftime and Enchantment led 34-33 at the break — three days after a game in which they trailed by 48-22 at the half and by as many as 26 points in the third quarter.

The NCAA tournament is officially expanding to 76 teams, and Dayton could use some help when it comes to hosting opening round games. That's where Wichita comes in.
The NCAA announced that Wichita and Dayton will host opening-round tripleheaders on the Tuesday and Wednesday following Selection Sunday.
"We were pleased but not surprised by the number of cities from around the country that very much wanted March Madness to begin in their market," said Keith Gill, the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference and the chair of the Division I Men's Basketball Committee. "Like Dayton, Wichita is a basketball-crazed community that we expect will embrace the reimagined start of the tournament. Having a city in Middle America will be advantageous for getting teams from various points around the country, many of which won't be known until Selection Sunday, to the Opening Round and subsequently first-round sites."
The games in Wichita and Dayton will feature the 12 lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers and the 12 lowest-seeded at-large schools.
Dayton has been the opening round host since 2001, with UD Arena hosting the most games in NCAA tournament history.

Welsh teenager Oliver Page wants to follow the lead of Arthur Fery after his Wimbledon journey came to an end in the Boy's quarter-finals.
The 18-year-old lost 6-3 6-1 to 11th seed Thijs Boogaard of the Netherlands.
But Page has been inspired by the performances of new British sensation Fery, who has become only the second wildcard entrant to reach the Wimbledon men's semi-finals.
Page is now going to study in the USA at Wichita State University next month, following in the footsteps of Fery who is a Stanford graduate.
"It's been proven that you can go from being in college to being a pro," Page said after his defeat in SW19 on Thursday.

New Kansas State basketball coach Casey Alexander has landed his first 2027 high school recruit, which comes via a family tie on his staff.

The younger Cooper is listed at 6-foot-4, 175 pounds out of Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas). The 247Sports Composite lists him as the No. 108 overall player and No. 29 at his position.
Cooper picked the Wildcats over schools like TCU, Xavier, UNLV (where his dad previously served as an **** istant) and Wichita State.

Last week, Texas A&M coach Michael Earley made the first significant staff change of his career at the helm, firing second-year pitching coach Jason Kelley, leading to the pursuit and hiring of MLB pitching coach/coordinator Barry Enright, who has spent the last six seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Angels, and, most recently, the Athletics.
While Enright's lack of college coaching experience, especially recruiting, looked like a major red flag, the Aggies quickly added two of the top arms in the transfer portal, as former UNLV right‑hander Jase Evangelista and Wichita State transfer RHP Johnny Nuanez are headed to College Station, while the Aggies are predicted to land Texas State transfer Wade Cooper this week.
Enright's background as a developer was the primary reason Earley hired him over several current college coaches, feeling that his pro-level perspective and ability to connect with up-and-coming pitchers who need to tweak small parts of their game to reach their potential. If A&M lands Cooper, it's clear that Enright won't have issues landing transfer players.
This week, former MLB manager Bo Porter, who served as the Angels' first base coach during Bo Enright's time with the organization, praised Earley's decision to bring his former coaching partner on board, feeling that the Aggies may have just hired one of the "best pitching coaches in the country" during his interview with TexAgs.
"I commend Texas A&M for the hire," Porter stated to TexAgs. "When you look at Barry Enright's career, from the player to coach transitioning from the professional ranks to Texas A&M. I believe Texas A&M just hired one of the best pitching coaches in the country."

Texas A&M's back-to-back losses to USC in the College Station Regional weren't shocking, given the pitching struggles that haunted the Aggies throughout the regular season, and even though the offense scored 17 runs against Texas State, second-year coach Michael Earley's top three batters struggled at the plate when it mattered most.
However, after firing second-year pitching coach Jason Kelley, Earley hired former MLB pitching coach/coordinator Barry Enright to the position, resulting in two key transfer commitments from Wichita State transfer pitcher Johnny Nuanez, who finished the 2026 season with 6-2 with a 2.56 ERA over 56 1/3 innings and, on Sunday night, UNLV transfer HP Jase Evangelista, who was 4-1 with 64 strikeouts as a junior.
Already expected to land Texas State transfer RHP Wade Cooper, who will reportedly arrive on campus this Wednesday, On3 insider Pete Nakos also confirmed that fact, and after landing Clemson transfer C/OF Nate Savoie on Monday night, Michael Earley deserves credit for making significant progress this month.
Sources tell On3 that Cooper is set to arrive on a visit to Texas A&M on Wednesday. It was previously set for Monday. The Aggies are expected to land a commitment from the right-hander, who finished the season with a 4.72 ERA in 66.2 innings pitched with 73 strikeouts and five saves.
Likely set to lose star hitters Caden Sorrell, Gavin Grahovac, and Chris Hacopian, Earley will need to add a handful of veteran infielders/outfielders to pair with incoming sophomores Nico Partida, Boston Kellner, and Jorian Wilson after Savoie, Jack Bell, and Western Kentucky transfer infielder Lane Arroyos.

Auburn Sophomore Chase Fralick was named as a finalist for the Buster Posey Catcher of the Year Award, via Wichita Sports Commission on Monday, June 1.
The sophomore catcher becomes the first Auburn Tiger to be named a finalist for the award. The award is presented every year to the top catchers throughout the nation in college baseball. This year's finalists are John Embury (Florida Gulf Coast), Daniel Jackson (Georgia), Vahn Lackey (Georgia Tech), and Carson Tinney (Texas).
Fralick dominates the stat sheet for many batting categories for the Tigers. He leads Auburn in homers with 20, RBIs with 60, and a slugging percentage of .662. The sophomore's 20 homers are the most by an Auburn catcher in program history. His fielding percentage this season has been .996, catching eight runners stealing and one pickoff.
Thanks to Fralick's performances in the regional home run, the Tigers are now advancing to the NCAA Super Regionals. Auburn is set to host fellow SEC school, the Ole Miss Rebels, on Friday, June 5, for game one.
The Buster Posey Catcher of the Year Award will be announced live at the Men's College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. It is set to begin on Saturday, June 13, at 12:30 p.m. CT with the rest of the College Baseball Foundation awards.

For the second time, this Kansas chain has abruptly closed a Wichita restaurant

For the second time, a Wichita Jose Pepper’s restaurant has abruptly closed.
It first happened in late 2022 when the Jose Pepper’s on the west side closed after a decade in business.
Now, the one at the Plazzio development at 13th and Greenwich has closed.
A Google listing for the restaurant said it’s temporarily closed, but a voicemail at the restaurant said, “This location has permanently closed.”
Former employees of the restaurant, which opened in 2009, posted about it on social media Monday. They are not
