Less than a day after the passing of legendary country music icon and entrepreneur Dolly Parton, another beloved celebrity has shuffled off this mortal coil. Tim Curry has passed away at the age of 80. The actor succumbed to health effects from a 2012 stroke on August 25, 2026.
Tim Curry was the child of a British Navy veteran and spent his youth in various foreign countries until settling in the seaside town of Plymouth when he was 11. He was interested in acting from a young age and turned that interest into serious study at the University of Birmingham. When he graduated in 1968, he was almost immediately cast in the London production of the hit play Hair.
It was there that history would be made when Tim Curry met Richard O'Brien, the writer of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The iconic role of Dr. Frank N. Furter was written specifically for Curry and elevated him to fame when it was adapted to film and became a cult classic. It was his flamboyant, Bowie-esque performance that made him a household name, even as his career in British television was also bringing him success.
He continued to act on stage throughout his career, but the 1980s saw him move to Hollywood as more film roles became available to him. He played the villain, aptly named Darkness, in Legend, and submarine medical officer Dr. Yevgeniy Petrov in The Hunt for Red October. But it was his comedy roles as the butler Wadsworth in Clue and as the harried hotel concierge Mr. Hector in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York that brought him back into the spotlight after his Rocky Horror fame.
Curry did play dramatic roles, such as the conniving Cardinal Richelieu in The Three Musketeers and fortune-hunter Herkermer ******* lka in Congo, but on film, it was his zany antics that earned him recognition. His 1996 appearance as Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island, a movie that built its success from the novelty of having made A Muppet Christmas Carol with Michael Caine, cemented Curry's status as a star. Like the ******* ens adaptation, the Muppet version of the Robert Lewis Stephenson classic became one of the most definitive film versions of the book.

The Beckham family drama has been going on for nearly four years, but one thing that hasn't changed is the bond between Victoria Beckham and her daughter, Harper.
Harper and Victoria are the ultimate mother-daughter duo (@ Samir Hussein/^WireImage)
The mother-daughter duo gave fans another glimpse at their relationship on Monday when the 15-year-old shared a photo from their seaside getaway, including a sweet photo of the two posing together overlooking the water.
They enjoyed time near the water (@ IG: harperseven)
Harper kept it simple, writing, "My whole world" over the photo while tagging her mom and adding two pink hearts and a fairy. They showed off their individual styles with Victoria wearing a sheer, floor-length nude-toned cover-up with vintage details on the skirt over a bikini.

DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) — Knightsbridge withstood a fierce battle on the lead in the early going before pulling away to win the $1 million Pacific Classic by 6 1/4 lengths at Del Mar on Saturday.
Ridden by Junior Alvarado, Knightsbridge ran 1 1/4 miles in 2:01.79. The 5-year-old horse had shipped to the seaside track north of San Diego from the East Coast after a win in the Monmouth Cup five weeks ago in New Jersey.
"He was kind of skipping over the ground," Alvarado said. "I had my hopes that when I asked him he would give me his best right when we turned for home. It was all heart there. He's a horse that has a lot of talent."
Knightsbridge was challenged over the opening mile by the speedy Full Serrano before shaking him off at the head of the stretch. The winner paid $4.20 as the wagering favorite.
Original Sin finished second. Full Serrano was another 1 1/2 lengths back in third in the West Coast's richest race.

Formula 1 says farewell to the Dutch Grand Prix this weekend with the final event at Zandvoort before it drops off the calendar.
Orange smoke has hung in the air of the seaside venue since it returned to the schedule in 2021 after a 36-year absence, with sell-out crowds overwhelmingly supporting Red Bull's Max Verstappen.
Despite its popularity, organisers have not been able to make the event work financially and have decided not to continue hosting F1.

A California teenager pleaded guilty Friday to repeatedly kicking a sea lion in the face and chasing the animal as it tried to escape, according to video of the attack.
Tyler Muehl, 18, who lives in the San Diego seaside neighborhood of La Jolla, entered his plea in a federal courtroom to a misdemeanor violation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act's prohibition on harassing wildlife, the Justice Department said.
"Federal crime. Federal consequences," U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon wrote in a statement.

Bangor striker Ben Arthurs has completed a three-month ban after an anti-doping test revealed the presence of a banned substance following an Irish Premiership game in March.
The 28-year-old was suspended by the County Down club in April, although at the time it was said the Seasiders were "unable to provide further details" while an investigation took place.
Arthurs was subject to the anti-doping test after his side faced Glentoran on 10 March.
A statement from UK Anti-Doping [UKAD] on Thursday said: "Analysis of Mr Arthurs' sample returned an adverse ***** ytical finding (AAF), for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine."
Under UKAD rules, athletes can be issued reduced three-month suspensions "if they can establish that they used the substance out-of-competition and in a context unrelated to sport performance".

Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit have spent years trying to turn a modest island cabin into a showcase of Norwegian design — an ambitious renovation that stalled just as it was about to break ground. Now a storm named Amy has done what years of royal scandal couldn't: it forced their hands. The tempest tore apart one of the docks on Flatholmen, the tiny island the couple has owned since 2008. The damage has produced the first real building permit the property has seen in years — not for the glass-and-timber dream house long promised, but for a humble pier.

According to Norwegian outlet TV2, the municipality of Risør has cleared the crown prince and princess to rebuild the storm-wrecked dock. It's a modest approval, capped at six square meters, but it matters; without a working dock, the island is barely reachable, and any future revival of the couple's long-shelved architectural project would need one regardless.
The permit came with a catch. A companion request — for a seaside platform of the kind common along Norway's coast — was withdrawn after the state administrator recommended against it. The dock itself only cleared because of an unusual technicality: one of Flatholmen's existing moorings is used by police, which let the municipality authorize a second access point without setting a precedent for other landowners. Haakon and Mette-Marit will cover both the construction and the roughly $575 in municipal fees themselves. Notably, the original dock — built sometime between 1982 and 2004 — never had a formal permit at all, so this approval is being processed as new construction from scratch.

Another tournament, another triumph for local baseball players.
The Mafia Baseball Club, a Pacific Northwest team, won their ticket to play in the Babe Ruth World Series. On July 13-17, the Mafia Baseball Club was the top finishing team in the Pacific Northwest Regional Tournament in Calgary, Alberta. Now, they're going to Branson, Missouri. The Babe Ruth World Series is scheduled to begin on July 27 and run through August 5.
The Mafia Baseball Club of Oregon was formed in the summer of 2025 and is coached by Luke Roth and Mateo Vodjansky. Many of the Clatsop County athletes are familiar with Roth since his company, Mid-Major Media, that publishes on social media, covers many of the 4A-1A athletes throughout the state of Oregon. Roth said he started Mid-Major Media with the intention of highlighting the underrepresented athletes in smaller schools and communities across the state. His company is also a sponsor of the Mafia Baseball Club.
Mafia Baseball Club has roots in both Toledo, Washington and Northwest Oregon. The 2026 team features local athletes from Astoria, Warrenton, Seaside and Knappa, among others. Oliver Stevens (Knappa), Zephan Pierce (Warrenton), Sam Schacher (Astoria), Dallas Norris (Astoria) and Hayden Halsen (Seaside) all have spent parts of their summer playing with the team.
The graduated senior Pierce from Warrenton High School and incoming Knappa High School senior Stevens, had strong regional performances as both a pitcher and catcher. At the regional tournament in Calgary, Stevens spun a total of 7.2 innings and struck out 8, while Pierce hit .333 and had a .429 on base percentage.

Cornucopian is the morning line favorite for the Bing Crosby Stakes and is trained by bob Baffert
The Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar carries major significance as a "win and you're in" race for the Breeders' Cup. This means the winner receives an automatic entry into the $2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint at Keeneland later this fall. The 81st running of this grade 1 event features a balanced nine horse field that is led by the Bob Baffert-trained Cornucopian. With every runner as Stakes placed (finished in top three) or a Stakes winner, this six-furlong dirt dash for $400,000 in cash promises to be very competitive. Named for one of the founding fathers of the Seaside Oval, the career crooner is surely smiling when he sees this lineup of talent. Last year, the California-bred Lovesick Blues shook up the world with a huge closing kick at odds of 18 to 1. Could another longshot sing in this edition of the Bing?...Let's take a look at the entrants and provide a thought on each. The horses will be listed by post position with trainer, jockey, and morning line. The Bing Crosby Stakes will be contested on July 25 and is carded as race 10 with an expected post time of 6:30 pm Pacific time.
Son of Maximum Security has three wins and a second-place finish in his last four starts. Dominated in the St. Matthews Stakes at Churchill Downs at this distance in his last start back on April 30. Could be a 100 proof player here and certainly a horse for your superfecta.
Hard-running son of Shancelot that has his pappy's speed and his grandpappy's (Hard Spun) guts. Has been in top 3 in 9 of 12 carer starts but has only found the winner's circle 3 times. Trainer has a knack for pulling off upsets, but this is a tall task. A horse to play across the board at a price and oh by the way, those three wins have all been at old Del Mar.
Highly competitive son of Ghostzapper has run in 11 Stakes races in 13 career starts at distances ranging from six furlongs to a mile and a quarter. Was fourth in this race a year ago and finished a non-threatening fifth in his only start this year in the Bango Stakes at Churchill Downs on June 27. He has the experience against top competition and if the price is right is an across-the-board play. Put him on your exotic tickets.

The interest in that element of the story, although nuanced, is the unique and unfolding tales of players we have yet to fall in love with. Dive in and find another crush.

The golf architecture team of Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner have signed on to restore Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda, a seaside course originally designed by C.B. Macdonald with collaborator Seth Raynor and opened in 1921. The course work will follow a clubhouse renovation and upgrade, with the course slated to close for the restoration in the fall of 2027.
Mid Ocean was the only course Macdonald, a famed Golden Age architect, designed outside the United States. Mid Ocean, which accepts limited non-member play, ranks No. 6 on the 2026 Golfweek’s Best list of top courses in the Caribbean, Mexico, South America and the Atlantic islands. It also ranks among the top 100 courses outside the United States.
"C.B. Macdonald is on my personal Mount Rushmore of golf architects, so it’s an honor to have the opportunity to work on another of his courses," Hanse – who also restored Macdonald’s designs at Sleepy Hollow Country Club, The Creek Club and Yale Golf Course – said in a media release announcing the project. "He only built 10 or 12 golf courses, depending on how many you credit to him. The fact that we now have a significant opportunity at Mid Ocean Club means the world to us.
"Every single golf course C.B. Macdonald worked on was impactful, not only from the standpoint of that particular club, but in the world of golf course architecture."
Macdonald pioneered the use of template holes in his designs, using the concepts of great holes abroad to recreate strategic demands with “ideal holes.” One particular template in play at Mid Ocean – the Cape Hole design at No. 5, a par 4 that launches off an elevated tee then curves around a lake – was described by Hanse as “one of the greatest holes in the world.”

A fifth Test defeat in a row for England and little evidence of the great reset promised ahead of this Nations Championship opener after their humbling Six Nations campaign. South Africa, in what was their first game since last November, ran in seven tries in a statement victory that ramps up the pressure again on Steve Borthwick and leaves so many questions hanging in the air.
England will arrive back in London on Monday morning, with just six days to prepare for the game against Fiji in Liverpool, knowing that another defeat will not be acceptable.
Losing to South Africa at high altitude at Ellis Park, a mile above sea level, is one thing, losing to Fiji on ‘home’ turf in the seaside port would be a different story altogether.
Once again discipline let Borthwick’s side down, just as it did so often during the Six Nations, as they finished the contest with 13 men following yellow cards for Tommy Freeman and Guy Pepper, and South Africa turned the scoreline into the rout they had promised from early in the first half, finishing with tries by Malcolm Marx and Ben-Jason Dixon.
There was a lack of ruthlessness in England’s finishing, too, and at times they were simply out-powered by the relentless physicality of a Springboks side who were playing their first game together since last November. South Africa were easily able to seize on defensive lapses.

The 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills delivered drama, as Wyndham Clark emerged with the trophy — his second major **** le and second U.S. Open — but not without a Sunday that teetered on the brink of collapse.
For three days, Clark looked untouchable, building a commanding six-shot lead that suggested a procession. By late Sunday afternoon, that confidence waned. Shot by shot, his margin evaporated, tension thickened and what once felt inevitable suddenly felt fragile. The galleries sensed it, too, their energy shifting as Clark fought to steady himself against both the course and the moment. In the end, he held on.
And yet, the story of the season is not finished.
With one major remaining, the sport’s attention now turns across the pond to Royal Birkdale, where the 154th Open Championship awaits. The seaside links in Southport, England, will provide a dramatically different test — firm turf, coastal winds, and a style of golf that demands imagination as much as precision.
The road to Royal Birkdale begins to take shape in mid-July, when the 2026 Open Championship returns to one of England’s most storied links. The 154th edition will be contested from Thursday, July 16 through Sunday, July 19, along the windswept coast of Southport in Merseyside.

In what will hopefully be a sign of things to come, Everton will begin the 2026-27 season at home, on a Saturday, at 3pm, against Crystal Palace.
Just six of their 19 home games were on a Saturday last season, with just three at 3pm – two of which were in December. So the chance to have a (hopefully) sunny afternoon to open the campaign is most welcome.
The equivalent fixture last season saw Everton come behind to win 2-1 thanks to an Iliman Ndiaye penalty and a first Toffees goal for Jack Grealish.
It will be a first competitive match in charge of Palace for Pierre Sage, who left Lens to replace Oliver Glasner over the summer. He has some big boots to fill after Glasner led the Eagles to the FA Cup, Community Shield and the Conference League in the ******* e of 12 months.
Travelling Toffees will also be delighted to see the first away game is Bournemouth on August bank holiday weekend. Who doesn't like a summer trip to the seaside?

Decades after their football careers ended, former players still are following the lessons from “Mr. Waianae.”
Larry Ginoza, one of the most successful coaches in Hawaii high school football history, died this past Saturday. He was 89.
As Waianae High School’s head coach for 20 seasons through 1984, Ginoza won 189 games, third most on Oahu behind Cal Lee and Wendell Look. The Seariders won four Oahu Prep Bowls, including the inaugural championship in 1973, and nine OIA ******* les.
“Everyone knew how good he was as a coach,” said Kurt Gouveia, who had a dual role as quarterback and free safety for the Seasiders. “But he also was a great man. The man’s going to be missed a lot. He was stern but fair. He understood we were teenagers and we were going to make mistakes. But he taught us how to work hard and learn from our mistakes. And he was important to our community. He was Mr. Waianae.”
Ginoza relied on a wishbone offense, attacking defense, and a code of conduct and style.
