A Rhode Island-based medical equipment company has terminated an employee after the individual was linked to a racist message sent to Los Angeles Sparks forward Dearica Hamby, adding another chapter to growing concerns about harassment directed at WNBA players. The development follows an internal investigation prompted by Hamby's public disclosure of the message on social media, Yahoo! Sports reported.
The controversy began in late August when Hamby shared a screenshot of a text message she said had been sent to her personal phone number. According to reports, the message included racist language and offensive imagery. Hamby posted the sender's phone number on X and asked followers whether anyone recognized it, prompting widespread attention online.
Social media users subsequently identified the individual believed to have sent the message and connected the person to Acclaro Medical. After learning of the allegations, the company announced that the employee had been suspended while an investigation was conducted. Days later, Acclaro confirmed the individual was no longer employed by the company.
In statements provided to media outlets, Acclaro Medical said it condemns racism, harassment, hate speech and discrimination. The company also emphasized that the conduct allegedly involved does not reflect its values or standards.

One of San Francisco's highest-ranked schools will forfeit three of its varsity baseball games amid reports of racist taunting that allegedly occurred at a game last spring.
An investigation published Friday by the Academic Athletic **** ociation and CIF San Francisco City Section, the governing organizations of the school's teams, determined that on May 15, Lowell's varsity baseball team behaved in an "unsportsmanlike" manner while watching the championship junior varsity game versus Lincoln High School. Athletics officials said the team violated several of the **** ociation's bylaws, including its conduct and hazing policies.
The team is ordered to forfeit its games against three rivals in the 2026-2027 season: Lincoln High School, Galileo Academy and Washington High School. Officials have not set a date for the games yet, but they were chosen "based on the standings last season and the impact it will have on standings in the 2026-2027 season," the letter read.
Officials did not directly name the alleged racist incident or other allegations, but in a statement to SFGATE, school district officials said anyone who has witnessed or experienced "racialized harm" is urged to report it.
"We want to emphasize that there is no place for racism, discrimination, or racialized harm in the Lowell community or anywhere in SFUSD," the district said.

Brittany Boltinhouse, the former Miss North Carolina USA 2026 winner who had her ****** le stripped due to conduct that violated the organization's standards, has announced her return to the pageant world.
Boltinhouse, 27, revealed that she has been crowned Miss Global Honduras 2026 and will compete in the Miss Global pageant in Thailand in October.

Never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in, except to convictions of honour and good sense," she shared via Instagram on Monday, August 31. The news comes just four weeks after the Chairman and President of Miss USA, Thom Brodeur, announced the end of Boltinhouse's reign.

"The Miss USA organization does not tolerate racism, ****** phobia, transphobia nor language that strips any person of their dignity — whoever they are. Lowell High School's championship varsity baseball team will be forced to forfeit three future games against city rivals while its entire coaching staff has been removed, district officials announced Monday while releasing the results of investigations into a racially charged incident last spring.
"The school will find an interim coach for this season and conduct a search for a permanent coach for next season," officials said.
School administrators advised Lowell baseball parents and players of the decisions in a virtual meeting scheduled for early evening.
"We want to emphasize that there is no place for racism, discrimination, or racialized harm in the Lowell community or anywhere in SFUSD," district officials said in a statement obtained by the Chronicle prior to the meeting. "We encourage anyone who has experienced or witnessed racialized harm that has gone unaddressed to report it to school officials so that concerns can be appropriately addressed."
While the officials did not release specific information about the investigation, sources inside the Lowell community told the Chronicle in May that it appeared to be connected to alleged race-based taunting by Lowell's varsity players during a junior varsity game against Lincoln High at which the varsity coaches were present.

Florida gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds rejected comedian Bill Maher's claims that Donalds lost key counties in the recent primary in part due to the racism within the state.
Appearing on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" Friday night, Donalds, the Republican gubernatorial nominee, pushed back on Maher's **** ertion that he lost parts of Florida's Panhandle because of the area's predominantly White electorate.

The NFL will continue displaying anti-racism and social justice messages on fields and player helmets during the 2026 season, a decade after Colin Kaepernick first protested during the national anthem.
An NFL spokesperson confirmed to Front Office Sports that the league will continue using end-zone stencils and helmet decals this season, marking the seventh consecutive year of the initiative.
"Can confirm that we are continuing with both the end zone stencils and helmet decals this season," the spokesperson told Front Office Sports.
NFL teams have displayed social justice messages in their end zones since 2020, when protests spread across the country following the killing of George Floyd. During the 2025 season, teams could choose from messages including "End Racism," "Choose Love," "Stop Hate" and "Inspire Change."
The NFL's broader social justice efforts have included its Inspire Change program and performances of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" at major league events.

Former Miss North Carolina USA Brittany Boltinhouse filed a defamation lawsuit against pageant organizers after the Miss USA organization stripped her of her **** le earlier this month, alleging they tried to portray her as a racist and targeted her because she is a "conservative Christian."
While the Aug. 5 announcement of the decision from Miss USA Chairman and CEO Thom Brodeur did not specify the conduct Boltinhouse was alleged to have committed, the statement said in part that the organization "does not tolerate racism, **** phobia, transphobia, nor language that strips any person of their dignity."
The suit, filed Sunday in Duplin County, North Carolina, Superior Court, alleges that the pageant organizers were "maliciously coordinating to publish a false public narrative portraying Brittany Boltinhouse as a racist, **** phobe, transphobe and intolerable bigot to be shunned from public life," largely based on social media posts.

I recently reconnected with an administrator I met while I was in college. And what transpired was a conversation with a man who is living a wonderful philanthropic life.
Herb Yamanaka was an events manager at the University of Oregon back in the mid-1970s. He used to call me "Pineapple," an inside joke between two people from Hawaii. We'd ******* p into each other at the UO athletic department while I was a student volunteer and gofer and he was on the athletic staff.
It's not often one can chat with someone who was born before World War II, had relatives in internment camps, experienced racism for the first time in college, and was in college before Hawaii became a state.
Guess what, that man is still at UO — all 92 years young on Aug. 13 — as an ******* ociate athletic director focusing on major donor giving.
Yamanaka is gregarious, humble, benevolent and generous. The Army vet once rejected Nike founder Phil Knight's open checkbook offer for a memento and was the wingman for legendary former Oregon football coach and athletic director Len Casanova. He enjoys deep-sea fishing, going three times a year. In early August, he landed a bluefin tuna while angling in San Diego.

Douglas Luiz is back at Juventus, and this time, it looks like he'll stick around.
During his half-season loan spell back at Aston Villa earlier in the year, the Brazilian showcased why the Old Lady shell out north of €50 million for him two summers ago. However, they were only looking temporary reinforcement in place of their injured players and did not sign him back permanently.
Upon his return to Turin, Luiz has found circumstances markedly different to the ones that made him a pariah at the club. His ostracism came about during Thiago Motta's ill-fated term at the club, while Igor Tudor never really took an interest in him. And while Luciano Spalletti did like his profile and what he brought to the table, he never really got the chance.
Until now. Luiz has featured consistently throughout pre-season, having been appreciated by Spalletti and Juve faithful alike. Spalletti likes his ability to dictate the tempo of the game at will, and in his preferred 4-2-3-1 setup Luiz is seemingly fitting in nicely.
Given Khéphren Thuram's persistent knee struggles, he could end up being relied upon even more, and is currently, arguably, one of the first names on the team sheet as Juve prepare to kick off their Serie A campaign against Frosinone this Sunday.

Miss USA Organization chairman and CEO Thom Brodeur announced Wednesday that Boltinhouse, 27, was stripped of her ******* le after what he described as conduct that violated the organization's standards discovered in a "thorough review of recently surfaced information."
Although Brodeur did not specify the conduct, he said the pageant "does not tolerate racism, ******* phobia, transphobia nor language that strips any person of their dignity — whoever they are."

Turning pro isn't in the cards for most young footballers, but that doesn't mean that they can't have a career in the sport altogether.
Troy Townsend is a gleaming example of one such case. He's worn many hats across his six decades in the sport, from coach, to pundit, to advocate, and in 2024, he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his work with Kick It Out to help end racism in football.
Townsend was obsessed with football from an early age, yet despite playing for the Crystal Palace and Millwall academies, breaking through to a senior team wasn't in his tea leaves.
He'd make the jump to coaching, earning his badge at 19 and working with the university teams at Middlesex University and youth side Redwood FC, as well as launching Ultimate Sports alongside Steve Browne, which focused on providing physical education teachers and after-school programs to East London schools.

"The Odyssey" actor Jon Bernthal is drawing a line in the sand in the debate over pit bulls.
During an appearance on "The Howard Stern Show" on Saturday, Aug. 1, the 49-year-old star opened up about how he'd turned his life around after being arrested in 2009 for knocking a man out with a punch. Bernthal said the incident made him feel "so disgusted" with himself and earned him three years of probation.
The situation, which he detailed in a 2018 Esquire feature, was instigated by a supposedly inebriated man who grabbed Bernthal's pit bull, Boss, while they were on a walk, then followed them after the actor took the dog back. When host Howard Stern questioned why Bernthal's dogs didn't "attack" the man, "The Punisher" star explained, "My dogs are the greatest; they're unbelievably well trained."
Stern then asked if pit bulls' reputations were a "myth," to which Bernthal replied, "People have got to stop that."
"It's just racism. It's just dog racism. To be afraid of a breed of dog is completely ridiculous. It's like being afraid of somebody for their race or their ****** ual orientation. It's completely ridiculous," Bernthal said. He then alleged, "Look, if a pit bull bites you, it's going to suck. But they're no more likely to bite you than a Chihuahua or another breed."

CHICAGO (AP) — A former Illinois sheriff's deputy won't get an early medical release from his two-decade prison sentence for killing Sonya Massey inside her home after the Black woman called 911 about a possible prowler, state officials decided Friday.
Sean Grayson had been diagnosed with colon cancer prior to the 2024 shooting, and his attorney noted in January that the cancer had advanced to his liver and lungs.
The three-member Illinois Prisoner Review Board voted unanimously Friday to deny Grayson's application for early medical release, Liz Mitchell, a board spokesperson, said in an email.
Grayson, who is white, was convicted in October of second-degree murder for Massey's killing, a case that sparked protests over systemic racism and a U.S. Department of Justice review.
Body camera footage showed Grayson and another deputy enter Massey's home in Springfield, Illinois. Minutes later, Grayson shot the 36-year-old single mother in the face as she moved a pot of hot water from the stove and told him, "I rebuke you in the name of Jesus."

The WNBA appears to be at an inflection point that will decide whether it can successfully navigate the inordinate attention around Indiana star Caitlin Clark, or if it will be captured by uninformed media perspectives and false narratives.
Clark is a full-fledged icon in America's culture wars, a straight white point guard in a largely Black and LGBTQ league. And she is also a money-maker like the WNBA has never seen. She also is a 24-year-old who can't seem to ever satisfy critics.
In an appearance on The Awful Announcing Podcast this week, sports commentator Jemele Hill shared her thoughts, after covering WNBA All-Star weekend, on the vast divide between media perspectives on television and across the internet and how the people close to Clark feel about her.
"I feel a lot of empathy for her, just because there's so much of this she did not ask for," Hill said. "She didn't ask to be some kind of bat signal for a culture war. She certainly didn't ask for the group of fans — which I believe are not the majority — the group of fans that have decided that she's going to be their vessel to get off as much racism as they possibly can."
Hill likened the intense scrutiny toward Clark to another sports story, transgender athlete laws, that has been co-opted by conservative media as well.

Discrimination remains "deeply embedded" within English football, according to the chief executive of Kick It Out, as reports of abuse surged by 25 per cent last season.
The anti-discrimination charity recorded 1,744 reports in the 2025-26 campaign, a significant rise from 1,398 in the previous year. For the first time, the number of distinct incidents surpassed 1,000, reaching 1,255.
Kick It Out clarified that while one incident can generate multiple reports, the reports-per-incident ratio for the past season stood at 1.39. The increase was widespread across various platforms and levels of the game.
Reports of online discrimination rose by five per cent to 650, while incidents in the professional game and at grassroots level both saw a 41 per cent increase, reaching 636 and 458 reports respectively.
The charity's data revealed alarming increases across all types of abuse. Islamophobia reports soared by 88 per cent, ***** phobia by 46 per cent, and anti-Semitism by 43 per cent. Racism reports were up 19 per cent, ***** ism by 12 per cent, and ableism by 20 per cent.

Ty Lawson shared his reaction on Thursday after reports about his alleged shoplifting arrest made the rounds on social media, and the former NBA guard didn't hold back in his rant.
In his social media posts, the former Denver Nuggets star claims he experienced racism during his encounter with the police officers in Castle Rock, Colorado, over the alleged incident.
"I'm not going to lie. Being black in America is tough… Being lied by a pasty face white woman wild… stay outta castle rock Colorado!!!!" Lawson wrote on X. "This is the wildest and more racist s–t I been thru."

Lawson was taken into custody by the Castle Rock Police Department on July 16 after a liquor store worker accused the former Nuggets guard of stealing a $34 bottle of ***** o's vodka while drunk. He is facing one charge of theft of less than $300 and is due in court for a pretrial conference next month.

A former Spanish prime minister faces racism accusations from French and Spanish officials after claiming France's World Cup squad "does not have any French players."
Mariano Rajoy, of Spain’s conservative Popular Party, made incendiary remarks in a column for El Debate on 10 July, ahead of Tuesday’s World Cup semi-final.
He wrote: "They’ve won every match they’ve played at this World Cup and are currently top of the Fifa rankings. They also have an exceptionally strong squad. That said, one thing they don’t have is any French players."
Condemnation from Paris was swift. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot told BFM TV on Monday that "France has no skin colour. Any contrary claim stems from stupidity, racism or a combination of the two."
French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo stated on X: "Mariano Rajoy’s remarks about the French team carry intolerable whiffs of racism," adding that "they also raise questions about the deplorable climate that gives rise to such sentiments. Our players do not need a certificate of nationality from a former Spanish prime minister."

When 18-year-old Nolan Wells of Mississippi turned up missing, then dead, several black activists jumped into action, including Colin Kaepernick.
Wells was reported missing when he went on a boat last Saturday with his friends, never returned, and was later found dead. Wells' parents didn't trust Mississippi authorities to do the teenager's autopsy, so Kaepernick stepped in with his organization to do an independent autopsy.
That's just one of the things that Kaepernick has done since his NFL career ended. When Kaepernick took a knee in protest against racism, it ended his career. He tried for many years to reenter the league, but several teams were afraid to take a chance on him because they didn't want the controversy that followed him.
Turns out, that may have been the best thing to happen to the former NFL star. He has been more powerful off the field than on it. His activism has prompted others to take a stand on issues after he was effectively banned from the league.
His activism hasn't come with much bravado; it's been done quietly, as in this situation with Wells. He has a foundation called Know Your Rights Camp. Part of his foundation has an initiative called the Autopsy Initiative, whose goal is to provide grieving families with accurate, transparent, and forensically correct information regarding the cause of death of a loved one.

A pre-season friendly between German second-division newcomers Energie Cottbus and fourth-tier Halle was abandoned on Saturday due to racist remarks from the crowd.
Cottbus player King Manu was the subject of monkey noises and was verbally abused by fans at the ground in Finsterwalde in eastern Germany. He protested loudly against the insults.
Police arrived quickly and identified two Halle supporters before escorting them out of the stadium. Organizers then decided to abandon the match for safety reasons and over 3,000 fans dispersed.
A joint statement from the clubs read: "Today's friendly match between Energie Cottbus and Halle was abandoned following a racist incident involving a player from Energie Cottbus. There is no place for racism or discrimination in either club, neither on the pitch nor in the stands!"
