Puck, the subscription newsletter and events business, is in late-stage talks with private investment firm RedBird Capital Partners about a deal that would see RedBird becoming its largest shareholder, sources confirmed to Axios.
Why it matters: The deal, which values Puck at roughly $250 million, would set a strong industry benchmark for other media startups looking to liquidate.
By the numbers: Puck raised more than $17 million since it launched in 2021.
It acquired Air Mail, another subscription email startup with overlapping investors, in a cash-and-stock deal worth $16 million last year. Air Mail had raised more than $30 million across two funding rounds.
Neither Puck nor Air Mail were profitable at the time of the transaction, Axios reported.

The Penguins' already stacked forward group could be getting even deeper with potential options. Filip Hallander lost most of the 2025-26 season due to a puck strike causing a blood clot in his leg. A translated Swedish interview (shoutout Reddit) gives an update for how he's doing, ****** led "Hållander on the tough year: "I thought I'd be doing something else". We ran it through a google translator so we won't take every word for gospel, but one can kind of get the general point.
First, he suffered a blood clot in his leg. Then, something was discovered in one of his lungs. Now, Filip Hållander is back on the ice and opening up about the tough year he endured.

Aug. 17— The Austin Bruins have announced that the club will play four preseason games prior to the 2026 regular-season opener.
The Bruins will face off in a home-and-home series with the Midwest Division's Minnesota Wilderness in a rematch of the 2026 Robertson Cup Semifinal. The Bruins will visit the Wilderness on Friday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. from Wessman Arena on the campus of UW-Superior in Superior, Wis. and host Minnesota on Saturday, September 5 at 6:05 p.m. at Riverside Arena.
Bruins fans will get their first taste of Central Division play the following week with a home-and-home series against in-state rival St. Cloud Norsemen. The Bruins head up to the St. Cloud Municipal Athletic Complex for a noon puck drop on Wednesday, September 9 before hosting the Norsemen on Saturday, September 12 at 6:05 p.m. at Riverside Arena.

New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reportedly split from ex-fiancé Riley Roberts before deciding to freeze her eggs.
Leigh Ann Caldwell, Puck's Chief Washington Correspondent, reported on Tuesday, August 11, that Ocasio-Cortez, 36, and Roberts called it quits, though the timeline remains unclear.
"I was told by a reputable Democratic source about 18 months ago that her engagement was called off," Caldwell shared via X. "AOC stopped wearing her engagement ring several months before that."
TMZ also reported the former couple had gone their separate ways, pointing to Ocasio-Cortez and Roberts last being photographed at the Met Gala in 2021.
However, one user on X pointed out that Manhattan's Black Iron Burger shared a photo of Ocasio-Cortez with an unidentified man in May. TOURNON-SUR-RHONE, France (AP) — Mauritian rider Kim Le Court-Pienaar won the sixth stage of the Women's Tour de France in a sprint to the line on Thursday, while Marlen Reusser kept the race leader's yellow jersey.
Le Court-Pienaar attacked from 300 meters out and held off Frenchwoman Cedrine Kerbaol and Dutchwoman Puck Pieterse, who was third. Le Court-Pienaar lay on her back in a mixture of exhaustion and elation as she savored her victory after winning in about four hours.
The Swiss rider Reusser maintained her overall lead of 12 seconds from Dutchwoman Demi Vollering, with Poland's Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney, 1 minute and 17 seconds behind in third.
Two-time Giro d'Italia winner Elisa Longo Borghini jumped up a couple of places to fourth overall to move into outside contention for the ******* le at 2:28 back. Le Court-Pienaar was ninth at 3:26 behind while defending champion Pauline Ferrand-Prévot of France was 15th.
Stage six took riders on a 153-kilometer (95-mile) route featuring five modest climbs and one tricky category 2-level climb — the third-hardest category in the race — before a downhill dash to Tournon-sur-Rhône in the Ardèche region of south-central France.

Lenni Hameenaho had quite the season for his first campaign in North America in 2025-26. Starting the season in the AHL with the Utica Comets, Hameenaho initially got off to a slow start with no points in his first nine games. He would come on strong after an that initial adjustment period to post 22 points in his next 25 games, earning himself a spot in the NHL for much of the remainder of the Devils' season. His 33 NHL appearances would see him post just eight points (two goals and six ***** ists) while mostly being used in the Bottom Six. The Devils would send Lenni back down for the final push for the Comets to make the postseason; while they came up just short, Hameenaho contibuted four points in those three games.
2025-26 was a good start for a 21 year old rookie; while you might be disappointed in his NHL point totals, keep in mind his deployment, He was typically playing on the fourth line with little to no time on special teams. He wasn't consistently put with teammates who could help him generate offense. He did make a number of mistakes as young players often do, but by the end of the season I would argue Hameenaho was a more complete player in game 33 in New Jersey than he was in game one. This upcoming season will be a good opportunity for him to take another step forward. The only question has to be where in the organization will that be?
For 2026-27, the Devils have added to their forward depth, so much so that if Hameenaho were to be on the NHL roster alongside everyone else listed on PuckPedia, he would be one of 14 forwards. While the Devils carried 14 forwards for a portion of last season, I don't think the argument could be made that all of them belonged at the NHL level. This season, while you could argue their role and deployment, each of the other 13 forwards is at least an NHL player. The Devils are trying to ensure future success, but also want to win now; if there's players better than Lenni, that means 12 other Devils will be on the ice nightly, and at the same time you don't want one of your better prospects sitting in the press box on a nightly or almost nightly basis. So is Hameenaho destined for a full season with Utica?
I think a lot of it is going to depend on how much he's learned from last season and what he has done this summer. If Lenni spent the offseason looking over game footage, furthering his understanding of Sheldon Keefe's system, adding muscle to his frame and continuing to improve his skills, then there's a chance he could leap over a number of the lower tier Devils forwards and work his way onto the opening night roster. If that were the case, then the Devils would probably have to send a goaltender or fringe forward down, but hey, would the Devils really be that much worse without one of Nico Daws/David Rittich or Jesper Boqvist/Nick Bjugstad?
Conversely, Hameenaho is still a very young player, as he will just be turning 22 shortly into the upcoming season. It wouldn't be a bad thing if the Devi

Penn State hockey picked up its fourth defenseman of the 2027 class with a commitment from Kohyn Eshkawkogan earlier on Saturday:
Eshkawkogan hails from Ontario and finished his first two seasons in the OHL with 73 points (12 goals, 61 ***** ists) in 120 games with the Ottawa 67's. His 53 points in 68 games during the 2025-26 regular season ranked 8th among all OHL defensemen. He is an excellent puck mover and playmaker in the offensive zone. While he is not the most explosive goal-scoring defenseman, he is strong on the power play. His 23 power play ***** ists ranked 3rd among all OHL defensemen in 2025-26.
As he turns 18 this November, Eshkawkogan will be eligible for the 2027 NHL Entry Draft. Most current projections for the 2027 draft have him ranging from a late first to an early second round selection. With Jackson Smith likely departing for the pros after the 2026-27 season, Penn State will need a high-end offensive defenseman to take his place for the future. We will see if hits the ground running as quickly as Smith did, but the talent is certainly there for him to be a top pairing defenseman at Penn State and a power play quarterback.

Michigan State hockey continues to roll on the recruiting trail.
The Spartans picked up a five-star commitment on Saturday, with forward Jack Trupiano announcing his commitment from St. Clair Shores, Mich. Trupiano's commitment to Michigan State was reported by Puck Preps on social media.
Trupiano is a member of the 2010 class and will play for the United States National Team Development Program (US NTDP) this upcoming season. He is ranked as the No. 11 American forward in the class.
Trupiano is listed at 6-foot-0 and 183 pounds, and is 16 years old. It is ***** umed he has two years with the US NTDP before he'll join the Spartans.

The Seattle Seahawks have some big contract decisions coming up on their big defensive tackles. While time is on their side regarding Byron Murphy II, who isn't even extension eligible until next offseason, this year is the last of Leonard Williams' three-year contract. Williams confirmed that extension talks have been opened, but he didn't go into any real details beyond that.
If you're already antsy regarding the future of one of Seattle's most important players, perhaps this will put you at ease. In a guest appearance on Daily Puck Drop with Jason Puckett, longtime NFL insider Mike Garofalo indicated that a deal is imminent. How imminent? We shouldn't be worrying about it by the time the Seahawks hang their latest Super Bowl banner.
"It is going to be a big number," Garofalo said. "It'll be before Week 1, I'll put it to you like that, and it's going to be a big number from my understanding.
"A lot of teams now are playing defenses that are really relying upon defensive tackles. The Eagles paid both of their guys [Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis] a combined $64 million per year at defensive tackle. It used to be the defensive ends were getting all the money—I mean DTs got paid along the way, but now it's like really big money for these guys because a lot of these defenses, particularly the Eagles, rely upon these defensive tackles to create havoc up front. Same for the Seahawks and what they're doing."
Garofalo is referencing Jalen Carter's $38 million/year extension, which makes him (for now) the highest paid defensive tackle in the league. Jordan Davis' contract extension was three years for $78 million, or $26 million/year.

The amount of young talent in the Pittsburgh Penguins organization is filling up quickly. CapWages has 21 players on Pittsburgh’s reserve list for unsigned drafted players and the team has 22 others under contract that will be playing in the pro ranks next season. Once upon a time, finding 25 players to even rank was a tall task, now there are some decent enough names that won’t draw a mention at all for this year’s list considering that there are over 40 options between signed players and the reserve list. Today hopes to appease that with an honorable mention of five players on the cusp of making the list, all of whom show the potential to be ranked next year with favorable upcoming seasons.
Earlier in the week we kicked off Top 25 Under 25 season by looking at the players that won’t be a part of this year’s list due to aging out, being traded or otherwise leaving the organization. As a loose rule, we’re saying for now that 2019 draftees like Elmer Soderblom (who turned 25 earlier this summer) and Nick Robertson (who has his 25th birthday in September) are ineligible this year. 2020 draftees that are under the age of 25 currently, like Hendrix Lapierre and Joel Blomqvist meet the cut-off as fair game this year.
The top 25 under 25 series was a staple within the SBN Hockey blogs a decade ago, around here it’s morphed into what I like to think about as a snapshot in time for value and importance within the organization. It’s not meant to be purely predictive of which player may be the best pro in three, five or seven years but show how the young players currently stack up against one another.
In many ways it’s an impossible task, and a very subjective one. How does one weigh a 24-year old that figures to have a short leash at making an NHL impact (like a Phil Tomasino or Sam Poulin last year) against a fresh-faced 18 year old that was just drafted and doesn’t figure to turn pro for several years? Not to mention everything in between. It’s certainly a balancing act where guaranteed contributions to the NHL level count for something, even with the real possibility of a short shelf life and some projections also have to be taken into account for expected/hoped for futures.
Since this is a value-based snapshot in time, another handy tool may be to consider a hypothetical trade. If you **** ume a trade is going to happen and the other side wants either prospect X or young player Y to finalize the deal, which **** et would the organization be better off holding onto? The answer to that judgement can go a long way towards determining where the young players will slot in against each other for this list, though it isn’t a strict rule of thumb since some player profiles (puck moving defenseman) might have more trade value than organizational value than other spots (goalie, small winger). That consideration is at least some factor in aligning the rankings.

More than half a century has elapsed since the last big exhibition of work by Richard Dadd, the Victorian one-off who murdered his father while in his 20s and spent the rest of his life painting in psychiatric institutions. The most famous of his seemingly psychedelic compositions is The Fairy-Feller's Master-Stroke (1855-64), an airless, intricate and profoundly eccentric picture swarming with supernatural creatures, each apparently no bigger than a blade of grass. Surely it's the product of a fevered brain?
Richard Dadd: Beyond Bedlam, at the Royal Academy of Arts, invites us to consider its subject afresh, not as a lunatic who happened to paint but as a first-rate artist who lived with mental illness (probably schizophrenia), a little like Vincent van Gogh. Although, on this evidence, his folkloric paintings can appear obscure, as well as multitudinous and hallucinatory, the originality of his vision reinforces the show's premise. This exhibition may be weird, but it's certainly compelling.
Despite Dadd's medical history, it would be wrong to categorise him as an "outsider" artist. He was born in Kent in 1817, his mother died when he was a child, then, at the age of 19, he entered the Royal Academy Schools, a move emphasised (unsurprisingly, given its setting) by this exhibition's dull opening room. If Dadd's mature art appears technically accomplished and steeped in art history – I have a hunch that an odd watercolour of 1852 depicting Robin Hood craftily alludes to The Archers (1769-70) by Sir Joshua Reynolds now in Tate Britain – that's because he was trained, as well as talented.
After winning acclaim for some early Shakespearean fairy pictures, including one of a corpulent, malevolent-looking Puck sitting cross-legged on a fungus beneath a foxglove like a dripping shower head, Dadd was invited, in 1842, to accompany Thomas Phillips, a Welsh lawyer and politician, on a trip around the eastern Mediterranean. Over-stimulated by this grand tour, Dadd began suffering delusions. On his return to London, he became convinced that his father was a devil and killed him with a knife. A year later, he was admitted to Bethlem and remained there for two decades before being transferred to Broadmoor Hospital, where he would eventually die from tuberculosis, in 1886.
During his time as a patient, medical attitudes to mental illness started to shift. In 1854, Dadd produced Agony – Raving Madness, a watercolour of a manacled, half-naked, evidently tormented patient clutching at his head. Yet, Dadd's doctors wanted physical coercion to become a thing of the past. They allowed him to draw and paint as he wished, and even commissioned him to do so; exceptionally, at Broadmoor, they also provided him with carpentry tools, so that he could build his own idiosyncratic wooden picture frames (two of which appear at the Royal Academy).

On July 9, Citi ****** yst Jason Bazinet lowered the firm's price target on Netflix to $100 from $115 and kept a Buy rating on the shares. Bazinet said tepid viewership, an M&A overhang, the perception that Netflix lacks catalysts, and investor enthusiasm for semis have pressured Netflix's share price and sentiment, though Citi remains "more upbeat." Bazinet also said potential new tiers could help Netflix segment more effectively, support top-line growth, and reignite investor interest, while M&A could help fortify its intellectual property position.

TROY, N.Y. — As he typically does, Howie Rose struck the perfect chord in a pre-recorded video message shared here at the New York State Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony Sunday night.
"It's impossible to have a New York State Hockey Hall of Fame and not include Nicky Fotiu," the former New York Rangers broadcaster, and current Voice of the Mets, said.
That issue, as it were, was laid to rest this weekend, when the popular Staten Island-born former Rangers forward was inducted with the rest of the Class of 2026. Fittingly, he was enshrined alongside his Blueshirts teammate from the 1970s and '80's Don Maloney, and 1994 Stanley Cup-winning Rangers general manager Neil Smith.
"Now, it's all done. Signed, sealed, delivered," Fotiu told Forever Blueshirts, wearing a big smile. "New York State Hall of Fame. Staten Island Hall of Fame. Rangers Hall of Fame. I'm running out of Hall of Fames!"
Now 74 years old, Fotiu still has a lot of that kid left in him — the one who plays practical jokes, tells great stories, is everyone's friend, and loves the Rangers. He grew up sitting in the blue seats — remember them? — way up high at Madison Square Garden,. and never forgot his roots. Before every home game at MSG during his two tenures with the Rangers, he'd throw pucks up to the fans seated in the blues.

The Colorado Eagles are going to look very different this upcoming season. With 11 free agents choosing to move on from the club, it was important that the Colorado Avalanche start investing in its youth. The Avs extending Taylor Makar's contract for two additional years is one way that they can show it. His extension was not because he shares the same last name as his older brother Cale; it is because he earned it. Taylor still has more to achieve and he might have a breakout season this upcoming year.
Last season, in Makar's first full season in the pros, he did a lot better than expected. He was used in every role from the penalty kill to the power play. His 14 goals and 10 **** ists led all rookies on the Eagles. His ability to adapt during games became his greatest **** et. Makar would find the weakness on the edge of the defense and go on the rush for an opportunity. It usually led to the Eagles getting a scoring chance or starting pressure in the zone. The biggest problem that the Maine Black Bear had was taking penalties. Makar had 56 penalty minutes in 52 games in the AHL. Most of them were at the worst time of the game for the Eagles. Now former head coach Mark Letestu mentioned it was Makar's one weakness. That he needed to learn to control his stick and his massive size.
Makar impressed the Avalanche with a call-up last season and played in 12 NHL games. So much so that he is one player named by Jared Bednar who will get ample chances this upcoming season. Makar showed drastic improvement during his opportunity with the Avalanche, coming very close to a goal frequently. If we put these factors together, Makar could see his first point in an Avalanche sweater and his first 20-goal season in his career.
Taylor has done a lot to distance himself in the way he plays his game from the way Cale does. Fans should not hold him to the same expectations as they do his older brother. I think Taylor could morph into a long-lasting bottom-six forward that can kill penalties and hit the offense off the puck. He may not take the same path as Cale did, but they will end up on the same bench once again this season.

The Anaheim Ducks have matched the Philadelphia Flyers' five-year, $90 million offer sheet to Leo Carlsson, keeping the rising star and creating a little bit of a cap squeeze for the team.
The $18 million average annual value on the offer sheet makes Carlsson, 21, the highest-paid player in the NHL, passing the $17 million for Minnesota Wild star Kirill Kaprizov. The Flyers would have owed the Ducks four first-round picks if they had not matched.
With the match and the recent re-signing of defensemen Pavel Mintyukov and Tyson Hinds, the Ducks have about $9 million in remaining cap ***** e according to puckpedia.com

The Utah Mammoth said they have matched New Jersey’s offer sheet to Barrett Hayton, signing the 26-year-old center to a $4.775 million contract for next season.
“Barrett is a key piece of our team and important to what we are building here in Utah,” general manager Bill Armstrong said. “He’s strong in the faceoff circle, plays both sides of the puck and can play with anyone in our forward group. We are grateful to be able to count on Barrett in our lineup next season.”
Utah would have received the Devils’ 2027 second-round pick as compensation if it did not match. It cost New Jersey nothing to take the risk on the restricted free agent, as Philadelphia did with its $90 million offer sheet to Anaheim’s Leo Carlsson.

As the dust begins to settle, it's time to take a first glance at how the Rangers roster could look next season under head coach Mike Sullivan.
Rangers president and general manager Chris Drury spent much of the past seven months expressing his desire to build a younger, faster, and more dynamic Rangers offense. Drury stuck to his word, and the blockbuster addition of Pavel Dorofeyev from the Vegas Golden Knights via trade means that the Rangers top forward line should look and play very differently next season.
Dorofeyev is physical, aggressive, and intelligent as a forechecker, gets into dangerous areas off the puck, and puts away goals by the bucketload. The 25-year-old Russian winger is a two-way star who draws plenty of attention from opposing defenses, meaning he should make life a lot easier for his projected linemates, center Mika Zibanejad and winger Alexis Lafrenière.
Elsewhere in the lineup, Will Cuylle, Noa Laba, and Gabriel Perrault are talented young players each entering the final year of their current contracts, meaning they will all be restricted free agents (RFAs) in the summer of 2027. Cuylle is out to prove that he can be more than a decent middle-six forward following two straight 20-goal seasons. Meanwhile, Laba and Perrault should see increased playing time, and with it, the opportunity to break out into reliable pieces of the forward core.

College Puck NXT has released an updated batch of bracketology for the 2027 NCAA Tournament and to no surprise Michigan State is included in the mix. The popular college hockey social media channel has the Spartans landing as the No. 1 seed in the Springfield Region.
Michigan State is projected to play No. 4 seed Boston College in the opening round. If they were to get past the Eagles, then they'd play the winner of host No. 2 seed UMass and No. 3 seed Minnesota.
Michigan State has been a No. 1 seed in each of the last three NCAA Tournaments, but have failed to make it out of the opening weekend to reach the Frozen Four. The Spartans blew a late two-goal lead against Wisconsin this past year to end their season short of the Frozen Four.

Jul. 1—The Western Hockey League on Tuesday announced several changes which will impact the 2026-27 season. Some of those changes are aimed at making travel conditions better for the players and team staff, while one has the potential to significantly alter overtime play.
Point of 'no return': During the WHL preseason, the league will test a pilot program of "no return" three-on-three during the overtime period.
Under the "no return" format, once a team has gained the blueline a player cannot deliberately carry, pass, or shoot the puck outside the blueline. Should this occur, play will immediately be whistled down (unless the opposing team collects the puck first) and the resulting face-off will occur in the defensive zone of the offending team with no line change permitted. The team benefiting from the offensive zone face-off will have the opportunity to select which circle the face-off occurs in.
The "no return" format directly combats highly conservative overtime coaching strategies where the objective is to survive overtime and get to a shootout rather than trying to win in the extra session.
All 2026 WHL preseason games, regardless of final score, will feature "no return" three-on-three overtime to allow all clubs the opportunity to pilot the rule.

We're about midway through the current World Cup, but much of the media discussion has already shifted focus to 2030, when the next World Cup is scheduled to take place.
That's because FIFA have yet to open the bidding process for U.S. broadcast rights to the 2030 World Cup. That process, according to a recent Puck interview with Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks, is likely to begin in the next six to eight months as FIFA try to capitalize on the afterglow of a wildly successful home tournament.
The 2030 tournament, set to be held primarily in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, is expected to yield a much higher rights fee than the reported $485 million Fox is paying to air this edition, a favorable price awarded on the basis of a no-bid contract due to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar being moved to November and December.
Given the ratings success of this year's tournament (and perhaps the commercial value of FIFA's new hydration breaks), the market for 2030 World Cup rights is expected to be robust. And now, we know at least one broadcaster has already had conversations with FIFA about obtaining English-language rights in the United States.
According to a report by Austin Karp in Sports Business Journal, NBC has "had conversations already" with FIFA about securing both English and Spanish-language broadcast rights to the 2030 World Cup. NBC-owned Telemundo is the current Spanish-language broadcaster for the event, and similarly has its contract expire following the conclusion of the 2026 tournament.
