For the first time in 61 years, UNC basketball will play West Virginia.
The Tar Heels and Mountaineers will play during the 2026-27 season on Nov. 27 as part of the second annual ******* Vitale Invitational, presented by Belk. The Charlotte Sports Foundation and ESPN will host the game at Spectrum Center, home of the NBA's Charlotte Hornets.
A tip time and ESPN network channel will be announced at a later date, UNC said in a school-issued release.
UNC is 0-5 in the all-time series against West Virginia, so the Tar Heels will be trying to do something for the first time in program history in their first season under coach Michael Malone. Malone is bringing in at least 10 newcomers around senior Jarin Stevenson, including key transfer additions Neoklis Avdalas (Virginia Tech), Matt Able (N.C. State) and Terrence Brown (Utah).
Ross Hodge is entering his second season with the Mountaineers, headlined by key transfers Joson Sanon (St. John's) and Finley Bizjack (Butler).

Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables has long been viewed as one of the brightest defensive minds in college football. Since taking over in Norman, Venables has had to find the right balance between overseeing the entire program and continuing to lead the defense he built his reputation on.
When Venables first took over as head coach, Ted Roof called the plays defensively. It has been rumored that Venables took over play calling in Year 2, but nothing has been confirmed on that front. Then in Year 3, he hired Zac Alley to call the defense. Alley left after one season to become the defensive coordinator for the West Virginia Mountaineers. So, Venables returned to calling the defense. It might not be a coincidence that the two seasons Venables allegedly called the defense, Oklahoma went 10-3 both years, whereas the two years he didn't, the team went 6-7 both years.
Venables' ability to balance his responsibilities as a head coach while still leading the defense has earned respect throughout the SEC, including from Ole Miss Rebels head coach Pete Golding. He faced a similar transition after serving as Ole Miss' defensive coordinator before being promoted to head coach following the regular season. During SEC media days, Golding revealed that Venables was the first person he reached out to for advice on managing both roles.
"He was my first phone call," Golding said via OU Nightly. "There's so much respect for him and the job that he's done… I knew that he had been through it. Didn't do it in Year 1 and did it in Year 2. Brought in the protege and didn't do it in Year 3... He's like, 'look, man, ******* ody's going to call it like you. It's your system. You've done a great job.'"
Venables has spent his career building elite defenses, and Oklahoma's recent success has shown the value of his direct involvement. While balancing play calling with being a head coach is a difficult challenge, Venables has found a way to make it work.

The Kentucky Wildcats didn't have much going for them just a few short months ago.
They were able to get commitments from a few potential backcourt studs in Alex Wilkins and Zoom Diallo, but it is still up in the air how their play will transition to the SEC. However, Mark Pope came through, as later in the spring the team was able to get Malachi Moreno back, and he looks primed to be one of the best big men in the conference. Moreno was soaring up draft charts and could've been taken in the first round. However, he opted to join the Cats for a second season.
Then, Pope really started to find his groove when the Cats were able to add Iowa State sniper Milan Momcilovic. Momcilovic averaged 16.9 points per game last season and was arguably the best shooter in the country. Those four players should be huge for the Cats, as will several other talented transfers that Pope was able to add.
That said, this team is really starting to find its identity, and Pope's hope and a three-point-centric roster may be coming to fruition. West Virginia might soon find that out as the two sides are reportedly in negotiations for a fall ball right before Thanksgiving. Per Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio, the Cats and the Mountaineers could take to the hardwood in Nashville prior to the holiday on Black Friday.
It still appears there are some negotiations to be had to finalize things, but it seems more likely than not that the two parties will be able to figure it out. West Virginia didn't have a great season a year ago, but it has been a talented Big 12 side at times throughout the past decade.

The Florida women's basketball team will travel to the Bahamas in November to participate in the fifth annual Battle 4 Atlantis along with the Davidson Wildcats, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the West Virginia Mountaineers, the program announced on Wednesday.
Battle 4 Atlantis will take place at Imperial Arena at Atlantis Paradise Island from Nov. 24-26. Matchups, game times and television designations will be announced at a later date.
If the Gators are matched up with the Fighting Irish, it would be the first-ever meeting between the two schools on the hardwood, while Florida and Davidson have met just once before, back on Dec. 29, 2019, when the Orange and Blue prevailed at the O'Connell Center, 55-50.
Florida has faced West Virginia five times prior dating back to 1991, with four wins and a loss over that stretch. The Gators dropped the first meeting on neutral court that year, but have prevailed since, with the other four games split between the respective schools' home courts. The last time they played was in 2000, when UF beat WVU in Morgantown, 96-70.

West Viriginia is the best potential opponent for the Irish. The Mountaineers were a 5 seed in last year's NCAA Tournament and have made the tournament in four consecutive seasons. They won the Big 12 Tournament last season as well.

Some things never get old. Sunny weather, winning cash prizes, and the end of a work week are some examples. However, trolling Michigan football beats them all if you are an Ohio State fan, and that's why Buckeye fans love them some Appalachian State.
Of course, you know the story by now if you have Scarlet and Gray in your wardrobe. Heck, if you follow college football at all, the story is like a Disney classic, a tale as old as time (sorry, 'Little Mermaid'). On the very savory date of September 1, 2007, Michigan had a scheduled game against FCS opponent Appalachian State, a game that was just supposed to be a tune-up for the season. Someone forgot to send the memo (likely a fax at that time) to the Mountaineers.
Instead of a glorified scrimmage for the "Leaders and Best," a real-live American collegiate football game broke out, with Appalachian State pulling arguably the greatest upset in college football history. In other words, "yes, there's an App for that."
And hence, what was born was the ability for Ohio State fans to troll the Michigan Wolverines for all of eternity -- until and if, that is -- OSU somehow loses to an FCS school like the Wolverines did that day. It's a trump card of all trump cards for the Ohio State/Michigan rivalry.
But, you know who else has the forever troll ready to lurk out from underneath the bridge when called upon? Yep, Appalachian State. The social media teams in the Western parts of North Carolina have had fun with it through the years as well, like the time it jumped on a social media post by Delta. And now, those thorns in the Maize and Blue side creative folks behind Appalachian State Athletics have struck again.

What's college baseball without a little drama, right? Especially in the College World Series, which UNC is currently hunting for its first National Championship within.
Despite the Mountaineers scoring six runs between the seventh and eighth innings, the Diamond Heels built themselves a large enough lead early, winning 12-7 and advancing to their third CWS Finals in program history.
North Carolina makes its first trip to the Finals since 2007, when it lost to national powerhouse Oregon State for a second-straight season. UNC now awaits the winner of Oklahoma-Georgia. If the Sooners win Wednesday night, the Diamond Heels play them. If the Sooners lose Wednesday and win Thursday, or if the Bulldogs win twice, North Carolina faces the boys in red.
UNC set the tone early on Wednesday, scoring eight runs in the first four innings. Add four more between the sixth and seventh, the Diamond Heels expanded their lead to 12-1.
Facing elimination and needing to play a desperate brand of baseball, West Virginia added six quick runs. The Mountaineer pitching, which struggled throughout, shut North Carolina down in the ninth and gave its batters one final chance.

Troy baseball has a message for the college baseball world writ large: It isn't a cutesy little June story. Those don't put up 26 runs within 36 hours to win their region as a No. 3 seed. They don't beat a clearly overmatched super regional opponent by a combined score of a 19-4. And they certainly don't have a hitter whose nickname plays on one of the most famous players in baseball history.
Enter Jabe Boroff, the face of a Troy Trojans team that, in a word, mashes. Troy has put up double-digit runs in five of its nine Men's NCAA Tournament games, including 16-11 and 10-2 wins over Florida to escape the Gainesville Regional. Indeed, it's a team that has played its best baseball with its back against the wall, defeating Ole Miss 12-8 in a game that wasn't even as close as that score in the elimination bracket following an opening-game loss to West Virginia in its first ever College World Series.
REQUIRED READING: Who's eliminated from College World Series? Updated CWS bracket, schedule
Boroff, who has adopted the nickname "Jabe Ruth," has earned the moniker. He has 21 RBI in the Men's NCAA Tournament to date, already the highest number since 2008. He hit the go-ahead double for the Trojans in their elimination game against Ole Miss in a 6-6 game in the seventh inning. And in a story we've seen so many times before, he's doing this as a diamond in the rough, a JUCO monster who is now getting a shot on college baseball's biggest stage.
It hasn't all been smooth sailing for Boroff. He struggled mightily through the regular season before finding his rhythm at the perfect time. He, like Troy, is an oddity. He was hitting sub-.200 in early May with just one home run to his name. His team made the tournament as a 29-loss Sun Belt team, and became the first 30-loss team (it lost its first game of regionals) to make the College World Series. But these underdogs aren't underdogs anymore. Here's what to know about Boroff heading into his next elimination game against the Mountaineers, who sent them down to the loser's bracket to begin with.

Day 3 of the Men’s College World Series started with a thrilling elimination game between Troy and Ole Miss, as the Trojans fell behind 6-2 before exploding for a 12-8 win.
Now it’s time for the nightcap, with Carolina and West Virginia facing off in a 1-0 game. Whoever comes out on top will be one win away from the championship series, while the loser will have to win three games in as many days to stay alive. In case you missed it, Thomas Blackington had a preview of the Mountaineers on Thursday (they beat Troy 7-5 in their opener on Friday), and Al Hood had the broadcast details this morning.
Share your thoughts in the comment section below as the game goes on. Here’s hoping the Tar Heels can keep it rolling!
