Maryland head coach Mike Locksley knows that he'll need all the help he can get if he wants to turn around a defense that finished near the bottom of the Big Ten in points allowed last season.
The Terrapins are well into their preparation for the 2026 season, but they received a commitment from experienced defensive back Jordan Scruggs, who will have to learn the system on the fly.
Scruggs is permitted to play another season in college football after a judge's injunction granted him one more year of eligibility.
He's played at several different schools, including Washburn, Central Missouri, Hutchinson CC, South Alabama, and most recently, West Virginia. He redshirted at Washburn.
Scruggs seemed to be inclined to return to the Mountaineers, but changed course late in the process.

With just 20 days remaining until Maryland football kicks off a pivotal 2026 season against Hampton, Testudo Times is taking an in-depth look at the situations in every position group for the Terps. Keep a lookout for more position previews that'll come out every other day; for now, it's time to talk about perhaps the least debatable starting spot on the roster.
While Maryland football's starting quarterback decision wasn't made until hours before the 2025 season opener, there is no debate this season.
After a standout freshman campaign, Malik Washington announced his plans to remain with the Terps during the offseason. His return was part of Maryland's 71% returning production — the second-highest mark nationally.
However, a wave of quarterbacks departed the program: Justyn Martin transferred to Ohio State, Khristian Martin left for Fresno State and Roman Jensen committed to Shippensburg. Even Jackson Hamilton, son of offensive ******* istant Pep Hamilton, is currently listed as a wide receiver after redshirting last year as a quarterback recruit.
Michael Locksley addressed the position group with three transfers and a three-star commit, but questions remain about the team's depth.

After a long, long offseason, Maryland football is set to start its 2026 season on September 5.
For many fans, the beginning of each new season brings renewed hope and promise (and maybe some slightly more complex feelings for yours truly, who will be spending his 21st birthday evening in the booth as the Terps play Hampton).
With one month remaining before the opening kick, the Terps hosted a media day in SECU Stadium's Tyser Tower, beginning to pull the curtains back on the work they have done in an aim to not finish 4-8 for a third straight season.
Here are some takeaways from the Terps' media day. The full video is available to watch here.
The first topic head coach Mike Locksley chose to address in his opening statement was the team's attitude with respect to the upcoming season: work over words.

It was the final Day 3 of Big Ten football media days 2026 in Chicago, and with it, we heard from the last third of the league's coaches and teams, after hearing from Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and players on Wednesday. On Thursday, we heard from Matt Rhule (Nebraska), Mike Locksley (Maryland), Kyle Whittingham (Michigan), David Braun (Northwestern), Jedd Fisch (Washington), and Curt Cignetti (Indiana).
If you are like us, we are interested in what all the head coaches in the conference have to say, and if so, then we have all of the press conferences from each head coach on Thursday for you. In this case, we've got one very interesting to Ohio State fans: new Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham and what he had to say about where the Wolverine program is and what might be in store for this year.
Have a listen. Can Whittingham turn the page from all the drama the Michigan program has seen over the last few years and get quarterback Bryce Underwood to take the all-important next step in development this season?
We'll continue to bring you sound bites, news, and commentary from the next couple of days at Big Ten media days, so be sure to check back.

Maryland struck early in Kenaz Sullivan‘s recruitment and never let up. That persistence paid off as the four-star safety from Stafford (Va.) St. James Academy announced his commitment to the Terrapins during his official visit, choosing Mike Locksley‘s program over Florida, Ohio State and Tennessee.
Ranked No. 236 in the Rivals Industry Ranking, Sullivan held over 40 offers, but Maryland’s longstanding relationships and hometown feel ultimately won out.
“Maryland was the first school to offer me,” Sullivan told Rivals. “They’ve been recruiting me hard for the past two years. That made a big difference.”
The official visit proved to be the deciding factor. He arrived on Friday, and before Saturday ended, his mind was set on staying home.
“This official visits definitely pushed them to the top, and I can’t wait to get there and make plays.

Maryland made the first move in Jayden Agberodiola‘s recruitment, and in the end, it made the biggest one.
The 6-foot-3, 340-pound defensive lineman from Rockvale (Tenn.) picked up his first offer on Jan. 26, and it was from Maryland. Less that five months later, after an official visit to College Park, Agberodiola has committed to Mike Locksley and the Terps.
The three-star chose Maryland over Arkansas, Boston College and USF, giving the Terps another massive addition in the trenches.
“They just recruited me very consistently and hard, especially once they realized how much potential I had and how I fit in their defensive scheme,” Agberodiola told Rivals.

Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy three-star safety Chuck Roberts has flipped his commitment from North Carolina to Maryland, according to Rivals’ Pete Nakos.
Pledged to the Tar Heels since Dec. 29, the 6-foot, 180-pounder now has his sights set on College Park in a big flip for head coach Mike Locksley and the Terrapins.
Roberts is the No. 580 overall prospect and No. 52 safety in the 2027 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 49 recruit in California.

After locking in with UNC at the end of last year, Roberts’ recruitment ramped up and he landed myriad new offers. Maryland, however, had been in the mix since October. The Terps have kept their foot on the gas pursuing a flip and Roberts has obliged while on his official visit this weekend.
