Venice has only had two road games this year.
The Indians now have two overtime wins as well.
Venice downed longtime foe Lakeland 32-25 on Friday, Sept. 4, needing two extra periods of overtime to notch the win. The Indians won their other road game at Rabun Gap (Ga.) in overtime on Aug. 21.
The Indians jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and looked primed to run away from the Dreadnaughts. Venice had no issues moving the ball in their first two possessions, scoring on a 4-yard carry from Dorien Jones, then cashing in on a Lakeland interception with an 8-yard touchdown run from Mike Blakely.
A lightning delay came right as the horn marked the end of the first quarter, and it could not have been timed better for Lakeland. With the Indians rolling and up two scores, the Dreadnaughts got a mini halftime to talk things over after the opening frame.

McKeel finished second at the George Whitmire Invitational and Geneva Classical and Lakeland Christian finished fifth and sixth, respectively. They are three of the top boys team in Polk County, but George Jenkins hasn't run its top four runners yet this season.
While the team competition is up for grabs, so is the individual boys competition. Lake Wales' Gabriel Harris heads into the season as the to returning runner, but he could be challenged by McKeel' Aidan Alam and Geneva Classical's Ryder Dempsey. Or perhaps another runner will emerges.

DETROIT — Tigers All-Star outfielder Riley Greene is trending toward a return to the lineup, though manager AJ Hinch isn't ready to put an exact timetable on that. If all goes well, he could return this week during the home stand.
Greene was back in the Comerica Park clubhouse Monday afternoon, Aug. 24, ahead of the opener of a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Greene was doing some outfield drills before the game. He had been rehabbing in Lakeland, Florida.

Left-hander Andrew Sears is reportedly on his way to Detroit. The Tigers 11th ranked prospect on our preseason rankings, Sears has shown out in two Triple-A appearances since being promoted from Double-A Erie back on August 11. The X account Dr. Degenerate, apparently the burner account for someone with good sources, reported on Saturday that Sears is being promoted to Detroit. That account has nailed several recent promotions in the Tigers' system. The report has been circulated by both Emily Waldon as well as the MiLB Central official account on X, and Chris McCosky of the Detroit News confirmed that Sears is with the team in Kansas City and will be used as a bulk reliever in Sunday's bullpen game.
The 23-year-old Sears, he'll turn 24 on August 30, was the Tigers 10th round pick in the 2023 draft out of Connecticut. That makes him the first pitching prospect drafted by Scott Harris to reach Detroit, and another later round success story to go with Brett Callahan. Sears received a $167,500 bonus to sign, just barely over the base bonus of $150,000.
Sears made his full season pro debut in 2024 at the Low-A Lakeland level, where his strikeout rate was good and he was rarely hit hard, but had some control issues. Those were resolved by 2025, and the southpaw continued to rack up good strikeout numbers and prevent home runs while throwing a lot more strikes for High-A West Michigan. Left-handers often thrive in A-ball and then struggle as more advanced hitters get used to seeing more southpaws against them, but Sears didn't miss a beat moving into the upper levels. He closed out the season with a nice run over six starts at Double-A Erie. The hope this year was that Sears would refine his changeup and overall command a bit more, reach Triple-A and become available in the second half of this season to help the major league club.
Ultimately, this all came to pass, but it was a wild ride for Sears this year. He had a bone spur fracture in his throwing elbow to begin the season, and spent a few months recovering and rehabbing, returning to Erie in mid-June. He made nine starts for the SeaWolves, compiling a 2.57 ERA/3.44 FIP combination, with a 24.3 percent strikeout rate and a 7.6 percent walk rate. In two starts for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens, Sears has been a strikeout machine, punching out 41.2 percent of hitters he's faced. His walk rate has ticked up to 11.8 percent, but he also hasn't allowed a home run.
We've pegged Sears for two seasons now as the next lefty swingman for the Tigers. He can start, but he makes plenty of sense as a long reliever and spot starter who also works out of the bullpen. His deception, built on a bit of funky, crossfire delivery and a quick arm from a low slot, makes him tricky to deal with, and his stuff has routinely played up compared to the raw stuff metrics. The big task this season was to refine his changeup and get to using the offspeed more often to take pressure off his good sinker-slider combination, and

Week one of the high school football season in the Schuylkill League and all across Pennsylvania is less than a week away.
But before teams turn to to preparing for their week one opponents, they'll have the opportunity for a tune-up as the league holds it "Scrimmage Saturday."
Numerous scrimmages will be happening locally including Greater Nanticoke facing Mahanoy Area, Tri-Valley along with Executive Education Charter Academy from Allentown will be scrimmaging Pine Grove Area, Nativity and Shenandoah Valley will also be partaking in a scrimmage at Minersville, and Schuylkill Haven will host Lakeland.
By this point in the summer, most head coaches already have a good idea of who their starters are, how their offense and defense are progressing, and where their team is overall prior to week one.
The scrimmages on Saturday will offer the opportunity for coaches to make sure their teams are ready to go for next Friday while also for the first time this fall giving them the opportunity to face someone in a different color jersey.

A wave of additions to the Low-A Lakeland Flying Tigers roster have been announced as the 2026 Detroit Tigers draft class receives their first ***** ignments in pro ball. 2026 first round selection RHP Cameron Flukey heads the list, as he is slated to debut in the organization with a start for the Flying Tigers later this week. The 21-year-old right-hander, selected 22nd overall back in July, missed the early part of his college season with Coastal Carolina due to a stress fracture in his ribs. The Tigers have decided to try to make up some of those innings lost in his final college season, and sources have reported that Flukey has looked very good in his bullpen sessions as he prepares to start his pro career. If things go well, there's a good chance he could begin his first full season in 2027 at the High-A level, putting him on a relative fast track towards the upper levels of the minor leagues.
Joining Flukey in Lakeland will also be 2026 sixth rounder SS Maddux Molony, and seventh rounder 1B Brady Ballinger. The Tigers have already made some additions to the Flying Tigers roster in recent weeks as former top prep picks LHP Paul Wilson and RHP Owen Hall have each made a few appearances. An exciting young shortstop prospect in Angel De Los Santos has been making waves after a strong showing in the Complex League and some good work in his first seven games for the Flying Tigers with a pair of home runs already. Fellow 19-year-old infielder Ronald Ramirez is also off to a strong start.
Shortstop Tyson LeBlanc, the Tigers second round pick this year, is currently on the 7-day IL with an undisclosed injury, but seems likely to return in time to start his pro career in Lakeland before the season ends.
The Bridge League, which is essentially an unofficial continuation of the Complex League on the backfields, has also had some interesting news as both RHP Michael Massey and RHP Zach Swanson, two high bonus picks who have spent most of their time in pro ball on the injured list, have made appearances. Massey was the Tigers' 4th rounder out of Wake Forest in 2024, while Swanson was a prep pick in the same draft. The duo were among our favorite arms selected over the past four drafts under the Scott Harris front office, so it's good to finally see them healthy and getting some work in.
Finally, 3B Carson Rucker, along with RHP Luke Hoskins, and RHP Maddux Long, have been promoted from Lakeland to High-A West Michigan.

A top Tigers hitting prospect is one step closer to Detroit.
Slugger Josue Briceño has been promoted to Triple-A Toledo from Double-A Erie, the Mud Hens announced before their game Tuesday night.
Briceño, 21, the No. 4 prospect in the Tigers' system according to MLB Pipeline, had a 1.054 OPS with Erie this season in 17 games, with eight home runs and 19 RBIs in 76 plate appearances after missing the first few months of the regular season with a wrist injury.
Briceño played for Erie last season, too, after stops in High-A West Michigan and Low-A Lakeland.
He burst onto prospect experts' radars at the 2024 Arizona Fall League, where he won the league's Triple Crown and was named the circuit's Most Valuable Player. A 6-foot-4, 200-pound, left-handed hitter, Briceño plays catcher, first base and designated hitter.

LOWER SUSSEX, Del. — The Lakeland Senior All-Star team fell 10-0, in six innings to Bulacan Little League of the Asia-Pacific Region in the second game of Senior League World Series pool play action.
The game started off quiet for both teams. Lakeland and Bulacan went through the first two innings and the top of the third in a pitching duel between Lakeland's Rylee Beebe and Bulacan's Princess Lyza Sioson and Carlene Jade Santos. The pitchers only allowed a combined seven players on base. The bottom of the third was a different story.
Beebe started off the bottom of the third with an instant out, but from there Bulacan exploded. Two walks and a hit by pitch later saw Bulacan load the bases.
Off the next batter Bulacan scored twice, before adding another off an error on the next pitch. After a walk, Bulacan was in a bases loaded situation once again.
Beebe struck out Bulacan's Janarie Joy Santos, for the second out of the inning, before allowing a walk that made Lakeland's deficit 4-0.

The Detroit Tigers are preparing to welcome Jackson Jobe back into their starting rotation.
According to Chris McCosky, Drew Anderson will start Wednesday and transition into a rotation role, while Jobe is expected to join the Tigers during their upcoming road series against the San Francisco Giants.
For a rotation recently reshaped by the trades of Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize, Jobe's return could not arrive at a more important time.
Jobe has been working his way back from the hybrid Tommy John procedure he underwent in June 2025. The surgery included a full reconstruction of his ulnar collateral ligament and an internal brace designed to support the repaired elbow.
The 23-year-old began his minor-league rehabilitation ****** ignment on July 7. In his first outing with Single-A Lakeland, Jobe reached 100.2 mph twice and averaged 98.8 mph with his four-seam fastball, well above his 2025 major-league average.

The Detroit Tigers have released right-handed pitcher Duque Hebbert from the organization during their weekend series against the Athletics.
The Lakeland Flying Tigers announced the transaction Saturday, ending Hebbert's three-year run in Detroit's minor-league system.
Hebbert first captured national attention while pitching for Nicaragua during the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
Then 21 years old, Hebbert struck out Juan Soto, Julio Rodríguez and Rafael Devers in the same inning against the Dominican Republic. All three were established MLB stars, making the performance one of the tournament's biggest surprise moments.
Detroit signed Hebbert to a minor-league contract weeks later, hoping that his WBC breakthrough could lead to something more.

Detroit — Barring any unforeseen, last-second snag, Javier Báez is back.
"I'm anticipating him being available to us today in the big leagues," manager AJ Hinch said on his weekly segment on MLB Radio.
Báez, 33, hasn't played since severely spraining his ankle ducking and half-sliding trying to avoid a tag at first base in the Tigers' 5-2 loss at Atlanta on April 28.
"I don't know how I didn't break it," Báez said that night after preliminary imaging showed no fracture.
But it was a high-ankle sprain and the recovery process was slow. After having to be shut down from baseball activity for a stretch last month, he's been on a fast track back. He made two rehab starts at Low-A Lakeland before being transferred to Triple-A Toledo over the weekend.

L.J. Cason is headed home.
Cason, the the former Michigan guard from Lakeland, Florida, announced Tuesday he is transferring to Miami (Florida).
Cason spent two seasons at Michigan, after committing to Florida Atlantic, where Dusty May was head coach. He followed May to Michigan, where he cracked the rotation as a freshman and was a key contributor as a sophomore. As the team's backup point guard, he averaged 8.4 points and 2.4 ******* ists in 18.6 minutes and shot 40.2% from 3-point range across 28 games last season.
Cason was playing his best basketball and was having a breakout campaign when he went down with a torn ACL in late February. He held off having surgery until April 9 — three days after Michigan beat UConn in the national ******* le game — so he could still be with the team during the NCAA Tournament.
Cason was the lone holdover Michigan was unable to hang on to following May's departure to the NBA's Dallas Mavericks. The other 13 players on the roster previously announced their plans to stay at Michigan for the 2026-27 season and play for former ******* istant Mike Boynton Jr., who agreed to a two-year deal as the Wolverines' head coach this month.

Mike Boynton Jr. is set to lose his first player since being named head coach, as Michigan point guard L.J. Cason intends on entering the transfer portal upon its opening for every player on the Wolverines’ roster.
Cason came to Michigan as a lowly regarded three-star prospect out of Lakeland, Florida. Former head coach Dusty May landed his commitment at Florida Atlantic prior to him leaving for the Michigan job, so Cason followed him to Ann Arbor. He contributed right away as a true freshman, playing in all 30 games coming off the bench for the Wolverines. Cason averaged 4.3 points, 1.4 rebounds, one ***** ist in 11.8 minutes per game.
He took a major step forward as a sophomore in the national championship-winning 2025-26 season, playing in 28 games (off the bench once again) and averaging 8.4 points, 2.4 ***** ists and 1.9 rebounds in 18.6 minutes per game. Cason was on a midseason heater — including putting up a career-high 18 points at Northwestern on Feb. 11 — prior to his season-ending torn ACL injury that he suffered in the Big Ten regular-season championship-clinching win at Illinois on Feb. 27.
Cason may have only played in seven more minutes per game between his freshman and sophomore years, but his shooting percentage significantly improved. This past season, Cason shot 50.3 percent from the field (81-for-161) and 40.2 percent from beyond the arc (33-for-82), more than doubling his three-point total as a freshman.
Prior to May leaving for the Dallas Mavericks, there was a plan in place for Cason to redshirt during the 2026-27 season. However, the 5-in-5 rule that passed by the NCAA earlier this summer enabled him to possibly be able to return for the upcoming season. This rule gives college athletes five years to compete from the time they turn 19 years old or graduate from high school, whichever happens first. This is set to end redshirting altogether and, in turn, let Cason return from injury sooner than once expected.

Right-hander Alex Petrovic grew up in Cypress, Texas, a suburb of Houston, the son of parents who played basketball at Oberlin College. Alex's physical gifts manifested themselves on the baseball diamond rather than the basketball court, and the youngster quickly began standing out on the sandlots around Texas. He attended Concordia Lutheran High School in Tomball, Texas, where he dominated as both a hitter and a pitch, earning TAPPS First Team All-State honors in 2022 and 2023. Inflammation in his right arm kept him off of the mound for the majority of his senior year, and may have cost him a selection in the 2023 MLB Draft; despite solid results, Petrovic was not considered an elite talent, and he ended up going undrafted, leading him to honor his commitment to Auburn University.
His career with the Tigers began inauspiciously, as the inflammation in his arm returned that fall. It calmed down to the point that, when the spring began, the right-hander was able to take the mound for his new team after missing the first three weeks of the season. Appearing in 7 games for Auburn, Petrovic allowed 7 earned runs in 11.0 innings, good for a 5.73 ERA, giving up 15 hits, walking 3, and striking out 17. There is a chance that the right-hander might have improved as the weather continued warming, but Petrovic sustained a stress fracture in his right elbow in early April, ending his season prematurely.
The right-hander had surgery on his elbow, having screws inserted into it, and returned to the mound at Plainsman Park for the 2025 season. Improbably, the exact same thing almost happened a second year in a row. The right-hander appeared in 7 games, starting 5, and posted a 4.34 ERA in 18.2 innings, allowing 13 hits, walking 4, and striking out 25, but once again, an injury on a different spot on his arm sustained in early April ended his season early. His velocity had backed up from the low-90s into the high-80s and his breaking **** did not look as sharp, and it was only a matter of time before something in his arm went off. A draft-eligible sophomore because of his age, Petrovic did not hear his name called in the 2025 MLB Draft.
When his arm felt better later that summer, the right-hander went to a baseball training facility in Lakeland, Florida- the Florida Base ARMory- and worked on making subtle changing his mechanics to put less stress on his arm and elbow and hopefully prevent a third-consecutive season-ending injury in 2026.
The 22-year-old returned to Auburn for his redshirt sophomore season armed with new mechanics and not only was he able to make it through the entire year without an injury, but Petrovic also had a very solid season. His fastball having gained a few ticks from the mechanical changes that were made and his secondary stuff looking sharper, he appeared in 17 games, starting all of them, and posted a 3.21 ERA in 92.2 innings, allowing 70 hits, walking 24, and striking out 92.

Perhaps better late than never.
Infielder Max Anderson, a Detroit Tigers infield prospect at Triple-A Toledo, is headed to the All-Star Futures Game this weekend in Philadelphia. He replaces Thayron Liranzo, a first baseman/catcher at Double-A Erie as the Tigers representative. Liranzo is on the injured list with a left finger laceration.
Anderson, 24, appears to be a worthy replacement. In 57 games between Toledo and Single-A Lakeland (he played five games there on a rehabilitation ***** ignment), Anderson is hitting .307 with 11 home runs, 36 RBIs and an .871 OPS while playing both second and third base.

A second-round pick out of Nebraska, Anderson is part of the Tigers' 2023 MLB Draft haul that includes outfielder Max Clark (No. 3 overall pick, and No. 14 overall prospect according to Baseball America) and shortstop Kevin McGonigle, who is in an All-Star as a rookie with the Tigers.

The Detroit Tigers announced a lot of promotions throughout the farm system on Tuesday. Typically, the Tigers start moving prospects from around this point in the year until the post-draft, post-trade deadline part of the calendar, so we should see a fair amount of movement over the next 5-6 weeks. The big moves today were the promotion of outfielder Brett Callahan and infielder John Peck, along with hard-throwing sinkerballer RHP Moises Rodriguez from Double-A Erie to Triple-A Toledo.
You can find more on Callahan and Peck on our midseason farm system update on the front page at Bless You Boys. Callahan in particular has been on a tear and the 24-year-old left-handed hitting outfielder is clearly ready for the next challenge. Peck still has a little more work to do in terms of his plate discipline, but the right-handed hitter can play anywhere on the infield including shortstop. The duo are an athletic, well-rounded pair of players on track to give the Tigers some bench and utility options next year, and if they break out further with the bat they could become future regulars.
Rodriguez throws a ***** acious sinker that gets up to 100 mph, though more commonly 98, with a pretty good breaking ball. He generally throws strikes when he needs to, but still needs to command the sinker at least more consistently to push his way into conversation for the Tigers bullpen.
There were plenty of other promotions as right-handed starter Hayden Minton and first baseman Garrett Pennington were promoted from High-A West Michigan to Double-A Erie. Infielder Max Burt will also move up with them to help backfill Peck's role.
From Lakeland, right-handed starter Charlie Christensen and lefty reliever Eliseo Mota were promoted from Single-A Lakeland to West Michigan. Christensen's big extension, low arm angle, and nasty slider-changeup combination have given young hitters fits in the Florida State League. He feels like a future reliever, as his sinker is underpowered and relies more on deception than raw stuff, but the 22-year-old out of Central Arkansas, the Tigers' 13th rounder last summer in the draft, looks like another bargain that is paying off so far. Mota is a 23-year-old reliever who has been punching tickets left and right in Lakeland.

There are some quiet weeks once the equipment is handed in after the final game, but there really is no offseason in football. Weight rooms have been hubs of activity for months and on Wednesday a dozen teams took part in the Mahopac Football Passing Scrimmages. For the last six years it's been a place to make valuable connections.
Arlington, Carmel, Fox Lane, Harrison, John Jay-Cross River, John Jay-East Fishkill, Lakeland, Mahopac, New Rochelle, Panas, Rye and Somers all took part.
Mahopac will also be hosting two sessions of the Block & Tackle High School Camp, June 30-July 2 and July 20-23.

Another busy weekend of official visits resulted in several high school football players on the USA TODAY Florida Network top 100 making college decisions.
Among the top commitments were North Miami Beach safety Andre Hyppolite (No. 32, Miami), Palm Beach Lakes athlete Turmarian Moreland (No. 43, Virginia Tech) and Lakeland edge rusher Drew Sapp (No. 59, Colorado).
The UCF Knights football program landed a pair of in-state commitments, while Wake Forest and Vanderbilt both added impact players to their secondaries.
USA TODAY Florida Network recruiting reporters Jon Santucci and Nick Wilson gave their takeaways from the second weekend in June:
Santucci: Miami. I absolutely love Andre Hyppolite's game. If the North Miami Beach safety was at another school in South Florida, everyone would know his name and his ability. He's long, rangy, physical and has the ability to add muscle to his 6-foot-1, 180-pound frame. This commitment wasn't a surprise as most expected Hyppolite to stay in Miami, but this still is a big win.
