The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) gained 0.62% to 7,758 to reach a record high. The Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) rose 1.30% to 26,691 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI) climbed 0.28% to 54,037 as a surprising contraction in July payrolls fueled interest rate optimism.
Gold prices climbed 2.31% to $4,339.11 as of U.S. market close, and the 10-Year Treasury yield fell 0.03% to 4.65%. Communication services and energy were the only sectors to drop, while industrials and basic materials led the gainers.
Atlassian soared 35%, and Twilio gained 25% on robust quarterly results. Airbnb surged after an earnings beat while Trade Desk tumbled on disappointing earnings. Meanwhile, Papa John's International extended its losses after **** ysts downgraded the stock following yesterday's guidance cut.
Today's jobs data gave markets a boost, as surprise figures showed employers cut jobs in July. Nonfarm payrolls fell by 23,000, and unemployment fell to 4.1%. A weaker-than-expected jobs market means the Federal Reserve is more likely to hold interest rates steady in September, making traders less risk-averse.
After yesterday's sell-off in software stocks, today's earnings tell a more nuanced story: Both Atlassian and Twilio posted dramatic gains on the back of impressive earnings. Investors seem to be looking at how artificial intelligence (AI) is impacting demand for each firms' services and rewarding those who are turning the new technology to their advantage.

Palantir shares surged north by more than 27% on Tuesday after the company reported quarterly earnings that CEO Alex Karp called "otherworldly" in a call with ******* ysts Monday evening.
While some ******* ysts were quick to frame the nearly 30% pop as recovery from a sell-off through June and July that saw Palantir wrapped into the doubts around the staying power of the software sector, the run-up extends a rally going back to 2024 that has seen the stock price boom from roughly $25 to more than $150 per share in only two years.
That shift in share price can really be traced back to the 2023 launch of Palantir's AIP platform, said Louie DiPalma, an industrials sector ******* yst at William Blair.
The company's existing platforms — Gotham for government operations and Foundry for the commercial sector — allowed customers to fuse massive amounts of disparate data and perform complex ******* ysis of that data. AIP, released in April 2023 shortly after OpenAI debuted ChatGPT the previous November, allowed customers on both platforms to connect large language models to their existing datasets, layering AI-powered ******* ysis and computation on top of Gotham and Foundry.

NEW YORK, Aug 3 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks kicked off August on a strong note to send the Dow Industrials to a closing record high, as signs of de-escalating U.S.-Iran tensions pulled down oil prices and Treasury yields in a busy week for earnings and economic data.
Crude prices settled down about 5% after U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that talks with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz would take place on Monday, though Iran disputed that talks were planned.
The drop in oil prices helped push U.S. Treasury yields lower, even as market participants continued to gauge the odds of a rate hike from the Federal Reserve should the Iran war continue for a prolonged period.
Communication services was the best performing of the 11 major S&P sectors, climbing 4.3% on the back of gains from Meta Platforms and Alphabet. Energy dropped 1.2% as the worst performer on the session.

A copy of the letter is available to download here. Mid-cap stocks delivered strong results, with the Russell Midcap® Growth Index rising 14.55% and slightly outperforming the Russell Midcap® Value Index's 13.40% gain. The quarter was supported by resilient corporate earnings, economic growth and AI infrastructure spending, although geopolitical tensions, higher energy prices and election-related uncertainty could create volatility. The firm remains optimistic that data-center investment will support technology, energy, defense and automation companies, while attractive healthcare valuations and stronger merger activity could create opportunities. However, financials and consumer stocks face mixed conditions because of housing weakness, inflation and uneven spending. Wabtec provides locomotives, equipment, systems, and services for the freight rail and passenger transit industries, including locomotives powered by different fuels, engines, electric motors, propulsion systems, marine products, and mining products to customers around the world. WAB's second-quarter fiscal 2026 report showed $3.2 billion in revenue (a 17.5% year-over-year gain), adjusted per-share earnings of $2.76 (up 21.6%), and increased 2026 revenue and EPS guidance to $12.5 billion and $10.90, respectively.
It's no wonder WAB shares are up 43% this year – and they could rise more. MoneyFlows data shows how Big Money investors are betting heavily on the forward picture of the stock.
Institutional volumes reveal plenty. In the last year, WAB has enjoyed strong investor demand, which we believe to be institutional support.
Each green bar signals unusually large volumes in WAB shares. They reflect our proprietary inflow signal, pushing the stock higher:
Plenty of industrials names are under accumulation right now. But there's a powerful fundamental story happening with Wabtec.

The bulls could cling to something worthy while they watch semiconductor stocks such as Sandisk (SNDK) and Micron (MU) get blown to pieces.
About 72% of S&P 500 stocks are now trading above their 200-day moving average, the strongest market breadth since December 2024, according to data from Barchart (see below). The benchmark index is also holding near record highs.
"You've got essentially two-thirds of S&P 500 companies that are trading above their 200-day moving average. That's relatively healthy and still consistent with the market that is more rotational in nature and not necessarily one that is correctional," Charles Schwab strategist Kevin Gordon said on Yahoo Finance's Opening Bid.
Investors have cashed in their AI bets and have rotated into software, financials, industrials, healthcare, and consumer discretionary stocks for their perceived values. A strong earnings season from many companies, like Coca-Cola (KO) on Tuesday, has helped offset the negative tones stemming from reports out of Alphabet (GOOGL) and Tesla (TSLA).
The market has also been supported by resilient economic data, continued expectations for Federal Reserve rate cuts over the next year, and robust corporate profit growth, all of which have kept money flowing into stocks.

"Marsh & McLennan Companies, Inc. (NYSE:MRSH) is the world's largest insurance broker and risk management firm. In our view, it is well-positioned as a leader in what we think is an oligopolistic market, benefiting from strong organic revenue growth and a long track record of consistent margin expansion. We think this strong performance is poised to be supplemented by management's unifying re branding efforts, which center on rolling out an expense program, leveraging AI to improve productivity, and centralizing its technology and operations to drive efficiencies and pro duce significant savings over time. Despite solid historical performance, dominant positioning, and continued operational improvements, the stock has fallen out of favor due to softening insurance rates and macroeconomic uncertainty, creating an opportunity to invest in an in dustry-leading company at an attractive price."

Given the business's long-cycle nature, this should support accelerating revenue growth in coming years if sustained. Margins met guidance, and management is confident in further gains from steps al ready underway.
