Stocks bounced back after yesterday’s punishing session, with chip stocks rebounding and Microsoft turning in its best day in nearly two decades.
Nasdaq surged 2.8%, while the Dow industrials and S&P 500 added 1.2% and 1.7% respectively. The PHLX Semiconductor Index jumped 8%, driven by momentum in Micron, Applied Materials, Intel and others.
Microsoft stock meanwhile shot up 16%, its biggest percentage gain since 2008. The rally added $450 billion to the company's market cap, a record for any U.S. company. Microsoft's surge followed earnings late Wednesday that beat expectations thanks to robust cloud growth and resilient free cash flow.
