The Nasdaq composite spiked up Thursday, with chip stocks a driver in the stock market's rebound from a sell-off in the previous session following the Federal Reserve's policy meeting. Chip equipment maker Lam Research (LRCX) shot higher on the stock market today on its raised outlook, while Meta Platforms (META) sank after its earnings report.
Near the end of the lunch hour in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose more than 500 points, or 1%. But a minority of the 30 stocks in the share-price-weighted index actually rose. Travelers (TRV) was the worst performer, falling 17 points, or 4%, to 371.75. The blue-chip index tumbled 2.1% on Wednesday. In Thursday's session, the S&P 500 reaccelerated its advance, rising 1.3% and not straying far from its intraday high of 7,417.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite, for now, was doing a better job of holding opening-hour gains than other indexes. It leaped 2.3%, adding to a jump of 1.7% minutes after the open. The composite index hit a session high of 25,112, up 8% for the year.
The Nasdaq-100 index picked up more than 3% following brutal sessions recently for memory and storage stocks. Lam shares on Thursday shot up 18%. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) climbed nearly 7%.
Amazon (AMZN) and Apple (AAPL) are the next Big Tech companies set to release earnings reports, with their latest figures due late Thursday.

Wall Street woke up in a good mood on Monday. Oil prices were tumbling on news of a U.S.-Iran ceasefire, and all three major indexes opened solidly higher. By midday, that optimism had largely evaporated.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI) was clinging to a 0.2% gain at 12:06 p.m. ET, down from an early peak of 1.3%. The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) had slipped 0.2% into the red after starting the day up 0.9%. The Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) was off 0.5%, having completely erased its 1.1% opening pop.

Brent crude dropped approximately 6% to around $86.40 per barrel after the U.S. and Iran agreed to pause military strikes while diplomatic talks resume. Lower oil means less inflation pressure, which means the Fed might ease up on rate hikes. Treasury yields dipped accordingly.

As of 11:38 AM ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI) is up 0.13% to 52,017.19, while the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) is down 0.33% to 7,387.76, and the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) has slipped 0.44% to 24,840.43 as tech pressure offsets optimism from cooling geopolitical tensions.
Gold is up 0.45% to $4,074.30, and the 10-Year Treasury yield is down 0.03% to 4.65%. Communications and consumer defensive stocks are this morning's top-performing sectors while technology and energy sectors are in the red.
RTX Corp climbed 2.61% to $218.28 on strong Q2 earnings. SAP surged 7.4% to $171.79, extending last week's gains after the software company beat earnings expectations. Conversely, Nvidia is trading lower amid concerns about Chinese competition. Reddit is up 6.7% to 171.79 on optimism about its upcoming earnings.
Oil prices fell this morning on news of a pause in strikes between the U.S. and Iran. WTI crude oil fell almost 7% to $83.15 a barrel, boosting market sentiment and lifting the Dow slightly. However, investors are braced for further volatility and will be watching the Federal Reserve meeting this week. The Fed is widely expected to leave rates unchanged in July, but inflationary pressures caused by ongoing tensions in the Middle East and high spending by tech companies could prompt it to raise rates before the end of the year.
On the other side, renewed artificial intelligence (AI) valuation concerns weighed on markets. This week will bring earnings from Microsoft, Meta Platforms, Apple, and Amazon, and investors will be paying close attention to capital expenditure plans. The high concentration in the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 means any drop in their share prices will have an outsized impact on these major indexes.

However, year-to-date, the fund (Class I Shares) increased by 23.17%, surpassing the 22.57% and 22.99% returns of the indexes, respectively. The second quarter's performance was mainly driven by holdings in the industrial sector, particularly aerospace and defense, as well as energy. Its underperformance was due to holdings and an underweight position in the information technology sector. The Firm remains optimistic about value stocks, citing their attractive valuations and strong free cash flow generation. In addition, please check the Strategy's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, Brandes Small Cap Value Fund highlighted its new purchase, The Campbell's Company (NASDAQ:CPB). After years of record-breaking growth, major market indexes are stagnating. The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) is down 0.42% over the past month, as of this writing, while the tech-focused Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) has sunk by nearly 2% in that time.
Some market indicators are also raising red flags over valuations. The S&P 500 Shiller CAPE Ratio, for instance, is the highest it's been since the dot-com bubble, suggesting the index is trading at a premium. The Buffett indicator is also at a record high of 236%. July 22 (Reuters) - U.S. stock indexes were mixed on Wednesday, as weakness in chip shares soured sentiment ahead of the first batch of Big Tech earnings that could decide the durability of Wall Street's AI-driven rally.
After ‌months of gains that pulled the major indexes up from their March lows, momentum has faltered as volatility in heavyweight ‌semiconductor shares has dented risk appetite.
Investors are now looking to second-quarter results from Alphabet and Tesla, the first of the so-called "Magnificent Seven" megacap companies to report after the bell for fresh evidence that these companies' multibillion-dollar investments in AI are paying off.
Alphabet will be under particular scrutiny after a delay in the launch of a model central to its AI ambitions intensified concerns. Its shares were flat.

The Fund aims to generate income and capital appreciation from a high-quality, high-dividend portfolio. YTD, the Fund returned +7.7%, compared with +10.2%, +16.3%, and +9.9% for the indexes, respectively. The Technology sector performed strongly, while Energy lagged. The Fund aims to mitigate these risks by maintaining a diversified mix of high-quality, high-yield stocks in undervalued sectors. In addition, please check the Fund's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.

"One of the fund's top holdings is ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation (NYSE:XOM). XOM is the world's premier integrated oil and gas company. It has attractive upstream exploration and production ****** ets in the low-cost Permian Basin and a unique, ultra-low-cost growth opportunity in Guyana, along with developing liquid natural gas (LNG) ****** ets for data centers. The company has a downstream Product Solutions segment that refines energy, chemical and specialty products. Its low-cost position, diversified ****** et base, scale, integrated ****** ets and strong balance sheet provide a sustainable competitive advantage, in our view.
XOM's five-year "Plan to 2030" provides a framework for higher growth and substantial capital returns. It targets 65% of upstream production from its "advantaged" ****** ets by 2030, up from 59% today, which will drive a favorable mix shift and expand margins. The company thinks it can add $25 billion in earnings and $35 billion in cash flow while keeping capital expenditures flat in the $22-27 billion range.

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is up +0.46%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) is down -0.14%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is up +0.86%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU26) are up +0.43%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU26) are up +0.78%.
Stock indexes are mostly higher today amid a rebound in chipmakers. Short covering emerged in chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks ahead of earnings results of megacap technology stocks this week, beginning with Alphabet on Wednesday. Stocks also found support after crude oil prices fell from their highs on signs that diplomatic efforts to end the US-Iran war were ongoing. Weakness in software stocks today is limiting the overall market's upside.

Big things come in small packages.
While tech giants like Nvidia and Apple usually hog the limelight, small- and mid-cap stocks have quietly taken the lead this year. While large-cap indexes are up a respectable 10% on average, smaller companies are sprinting ahead. The S&P MidCap 400 is up 14%, the Russell 2000 has surged about 20%, and the S&P 600 has climbed 21%. It might be time for financial advisors to give the rest of the market a second look.
"You can't deny the incredible returns large-cap funds have generated in recent years, and it's hard to get clients to move away from those numbers, especially given the underperformance of small-caps over the past 10 years," said Andrew Van Alstyne, founder of High Rock Wealth Management. Nonetheless, he sees plenty of upside in small- and mid-caps, typically allocating 20% to 25% of his clients' portfolios to the ****** e. "I've had strong confidence in this sector for a couple of years now. Even in years that small caps have underperformed, I would say that there is still a tremendous opportunity."

Stocks ended the week a long way from a bear market. But the "bear" word has started to crop up more in discussions among market ***** ysts. The Nasdaq ended below recent lows and leaning toward its next-nearest tests, the lows from June 26 and June 9. The S&P 500 finished ever-so-slightly below its 50-day moving average, equal to its last slip below the line from June 26.
On the downside, Sandisk (SNDK), Astera Labs (ALAB) and Marvell Technology (MRVL) booked the week's biggest losses on the Nasdaq 100, with an average drop of 25.3%. Paypal Holdings (PYPL), Cintas (CTAS) and Palo Alto Networks (PANW) held the upside, showing a 15.3% average gain. Results were similar on the S&P 500, but adding IBM (IBM) on the downside and Valero (VLO) among the week's winners.
The market is not providing a whole lot in the way of clues as to what comes next. Both the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 continue to trade below their early June highs. And rather than test those highs, wanting to break resistance and move higher, the indexes are instead testing lows and breaking technical support. Sellers are quietly overpowering buyers.
"Look, we are a trend-following methodology," says IBD Market Research Director Justin Nielsen. "And it's pretty easy when you're in a downtrend: we just kinda stay out. It's pretty easy when you're in an uptrend — that's where we like to push it, where we like to make money. This sideways action, this is where it's really tough."
That, for the time being, prescribes a course of caution: build watchlists, don't buy; rotate to cash where feasible and manage your capital with the understanding that it is unclear, for now, just where the stock market may be headed next.

Interested in Netflix, Inc.? Here are five stocks we like better.
A broad technology sector sell-off pressured the S&P 500 and NASDAQ this week, while energy and financial stocks gained on Strait of Hormuz tensions and strong bank earnings.
Netflix disappointed investors with a mixed earnings report, and next week's earnings from Alphabet will offer a key signal on the AI infrastructure trade's health.
MarketBeat **** ysts covered a range of stocks and sectors this week, including Micron, Fastenal, Johnson & Johnson, SanDisk, Broadcom, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, PayPal, and quantum computing names.
Another manic market week was punctuated by a tech wreck that pressured the S&P 500 and NASDAQ indexes. Nothing was working in the technology sector: chipmakers, neocloud providers, and hyperscalers were all down, as investors grew impatient or just tired of the artificial intelligence (AI) trade.
